Olive oil candles and lamps: Cotton wicks
Another great video. WRT making the hole in the cone, perhaps cutting a short length of the pipe, sharpen the edges of one end with a file or rotary tool then use it as a punch?
My fiberglass wick melted. Can't find carbon felt
Go with cotton if you have a pipe that's an inch and a half tall a 2-in piece of cotton should do it don't make it too tight and don't make it too loose just right....👍
My experiments with Lard candles (before I knew about forever wicks) I managed to get them to light using a normal candle as a core. They were smokeless and odourless. Watching your videos has given me the solution to make a reliable candle.
Yes indeed the trick is half inch tubing cut it at 1 and 1/2 in tall and then stand it up somehow with wire or a cone made from a small lid canning lid and you're in business put a wake up through it and you'll be fine....
Wick
@@tinbender998 Thank you.
Very cool
Another great video! I've just subscribed to the channel. WRT the lard lamp, how far do you fill the lard level up to top of the copper tube? I presume the heat generated from the flame will radiate into the copper to make the surrounding lard melt enough to keep wicking? Just one other thing, how long would you expect the burn time to be? Thanks in advance for a reply.
Thank you for subscribing first of all and I usually put about four to five teaspoons of lard in my lamp at a time when it gets low I just get about four to five teaspoons more I kind of go around my wick.. yes the heat does melt it down to liquefy and keeps it burning all the way to the bottom.. I have found that lard burns faster than Olive oil but I enjoy watching solid fuel go to liquid it's pretty neat I like my Lard lamp it's pretty cool. As far as how long will it burn I just don't know haven't got an answer to that one it's kind of hard to answer that question I just burned mine for I don't know an hour 2 hours or so and pretty soon after a few nights of doing that it's time to put about four or five more teaspoons in it burns up pretty quickly but I really enjoy it...
@@tinbender998 Thanks for that. Here in the UK olive/vegetable oil is really expensive and lard is about £1 a block. I've experimented burning it but with a normal wick (no copper sleeve) and the flame drowned itself. When I saw your way of doing it I've been inspired to try again. I think I'll keep to the carbon felt though because of its wicking properties with heavier oils. Thanks again.
@@paulbingham5914 pretty awesome I just did another video and I included my lard lamp and how I put lard into it on a continuous basis when I see it gets low.....,👍
I light mine with a crème brûlée torch and it lights fast
Creme brulee I like that pretty neat a torch works really good this is true a creme brulee torch awesome....
👍Do they work if you make the copper tube longer enabling you to get the flame to stick out of tall jars? Looking at this from adding light and heat to a campervan point of view.
It does not work you have to keep it one and a half inches tall otherwise it just won't work not for olive oil anyway.. or any cooking oil for that fact..
You could invest in manufacturing and selling these.
I do make them and sell them just go to my website and order some..,www.dnffarms.com.
Hi Steve, can you please tell us the exact measurement of the copper tube height!!!
1 and a half inches tall..
Hi. I bought one from you last year and I love it. I keep it on the countertop in my kitchen in case of a power outage. I filled it with olive oil and it burns great. Thanks so much!
This is what I'm talking about right on thank you...
Simple and Beautiful Light Steve I like Your videos From Quebec Canada Have a Great day
Thanks, you too!
Love it. I’m gonna try. I think that I’ll make some and see how they sell at the flea market
Hi, why do you use cotton over carbon on the lard lamp?
I don't know it's just me probably I like both but it's all right it's all good I'm just an old man LOL
Great video! Can I ask how long these lamps would burn for with the amount of oil you put in? My guess is they're very economical to run.
1 oz equals 4 hours of burn time that is what I have discovered
Put a lid on the top. It will make a difference cooking, frying or boiling water.
Very cool idea
The glass will surely break being in contact with cast iron.
Nope it got hot but it didn't bust it did boil my soup and boy was it hot but I ate it...🪔
Neat!
Yep I think so pretty cool 😎🪔
Thankyou
Hello, I was on your website and I had a question: could you please tell me how long the Forever Wick Olive Oil XL Candle will burn if I fill it to the top without refilling?
16 hours. 4 oz of oil. That's about all you can put in there. Just know that if you burn your lamp that long that you're going to have to clean it the next day with a paper towel and readjust it...👍🪔
So do you live on your own?
Sometimes I feel like I do LOL I live in my van while I'm trucking in Moses lake Washington but I come home on the weekends I have a wonderful wife and kids dogs chickens..
@@tinbender998 Sweet👍
As I'm watching this video, Tomorrow is Sunday morning lol once again... What a interesting synchronicity... Have a great Sunday
Good morning!
thankyou so much for the video .😍
My pleasure 😊
So glad to hear from you Steve. Still looking for the jig for the copper wire. I guess I just have to buy a pipe that's about 3/4 of an inch in diameter.
@@rogersmith8480 it's a 2-in wooden dowel you can purchase one on Amazon but it's cheaper at home Depot. I would be insane to sell my jigs because that's how I make them and sell lamps but if you want to make one that's awesome..
So glad I don't require a flange tool as no one owns one for me to use. So keen to make a tallow one. Maybe a USB lighter would be more cost effective. Can I use cotton material for the wick, cut out a few thin pieces, weave together or something?
Yes you certainly can as long as you're half inch tubing is half inch tubing and also cut at 1 and 1/2 in tall you'll be just fine..
Thank you. Can't wait to make my first one.
@@joanna6183 that is my goal is for everyone to have access to one of these olive oil lamps they are very nice to look at I love my lamp... 🪔
@@tinbender998 Thank you for sharing how to make them. Appreciate it.
You're fkin nuts!
Thanks
clever but If I had to buy a tool to make the flange it would be expensive
You don't have to flange it it works without flanging it..
I like the tent on your profile pic, it looks like a candle
Thank you
How long does the wick last before adjustment? Thanks.
Oh I'd say about 8 to 10 hours or maybe even 16 hours it depends on the flame olive oil has different habits you have to clean the top and then readjust it.. according to how much oil you have in there or oil has different habits..
4:59 So you are burning outside air and not depleting the interior oxygen, I like that.
Hi, I'm a new subscriber. I'm very curious. If you soak the carbon wick in olive oil, it will light easily without using an accelerant.?
Yes soak your wick it does help also get yourself a lighter a torch lighter those are awesome you can get one at North 40 for about 3 to $4
Hi, I'm a new subscriber. I'm very curious. If you soak the carbon wick in olive oil, it will light easily without using an accelerant. ?
LOL
Hi, I'm a new subscriber. I'm very curious. If you soak the carbon wick in olive oil, it will light easily without using an accelerant.
Yes soak the wicks it does help a torch lighter helps even more
Can you make a video of lighting this carbon felt wick without accelerator but just soaking it in olive oil thank you so much
@@s.a.Bfirestarters yes I will do that tomorrow morning
@@tinbender998 thankyou so much
Will a box cutter or ordinary scissors easily cut through 5mm carbon felt ?
Yes it will very easily
Interesting...but I'm going to stick with my Makita 18v emergency light and the 8 5.0aH batteries. Thanks for the video.
Was it just me or? After listening for a while I was expecting to see Leonardo DiCaprio’s face lol
How many ounces of oil for that 9 hours ?
For 9 hours of bird time you need about two and a half ounces
These are still very stinky. Olive oil still puts out a very undesirable fume. I suggest using these on an outdoor patio with significant ventilation!
Yes there's a smell about everything and olive oil has a smell also but I have found that I can burn olive oil all day long and it won't give me a cold unlike if I used lamp oil lamp oil always gave me a cold by the end of the day...
How much oil do you add to it to burn for 16 hours ?
1 oz equates to 4 hours so if you put 2 oz in that's 8 hours and if you put 4 oz in that is 16 hours right the oil cannot go clear up to the top of the pipe just almost.
Is that an xL ?
Yes extra large candle it's a wide mouth candle is what it is and yes if you put 4 oz of olive oil in there it will last 16 hours...
How long will the one you have there burn for ? I built the copper ones that you maid but I used peanut oil and it wont stay a light ? maybe I have to longer pipe Iam going to try the olive oil now to see if that works Iam going to make a heater for my spa pool , i am going to use about 4 or 5 of your lamps and on top i will have copper pipe that will go into sand to transfar the heat and then run water through the pipe . thank you for showing us your Lamps
To keep a flame with olive oil you just have to have an inch and a half long pipe and I always use half inch tubing
@tinbender998 thanks , but how long will it burn for with that small amount of oil in it ?
It's been for every 1 oz of olive oil 4 hours.. burn time so if you fill it up just a little bit more and have 2 oz in there you will have 8 hours of burn time in that small vessel.... And really it does not have to stop right there you can just simply pour more in after whatever how many hours you can just pour more in and make it last a lot more hours than just 8...
@tinbender998 Wow!!. I hope I can get it to work , Thanks again
So how do you adjust the wick?? There's no adjuster.
You have to use your fingers it's messy but it's worth it paper towels are good..,
How does the light work?
You just use a little bit of accelerant like lamp oil to light the forever wick and enjoy your flame.
@@tinbender998 yeah thank you Just saw another video to understand how it works
Cheers, great invention life changing infact! I plan to combine with a sand reservoir so the sand soaks up the heat and releases slowly, burning used cooking oil run thru a coffee filter collected not feed to the warms anymore.
NICE! 👍💯👍💯👍💯👍 Where do you get that flame thrower?
North 40 it only cost about $3
Cool😊🏁
RUclips finally recommended actually good content
👍💯👍💯👍💯👍💯👍!!!!
Thanks
Excellent video
Thank you very much!
Gday, just on the small amount of oil in the bottom of the jar to get it to work.where you have the wire handle with the rings to stabilise the wick, could you not put a rounded float there instead with another ring higher to keep it upright in the jar? That way you could fill the jar more. Just an idea.
That's food for thought I've done all the testing and oil does not like to rise up past an inch and a half that's why my inserts are only an inch and a half or less 1 in is preferable but an inch and a half is acceptable that's just the characteristics of oil olive oil to be specific that's all I ever use....,.
