I LIKE YOU, YOU SEEM LIKE A GOOD BLOKE😊
CASH RULES.
Every time!
I CAN DIGG YOUR VIBE BRUTHA. BUY RECORDS....FROM EVERYWHERE.😊
That's the idea
Totally agree with your comment towards the end about re-issues. Although I listen to and buy anything that tales my fancy,ska/skinhead reggae/Two-Tone etc... is my main thing and as much as I want original pressings,I just don't have the time, money and patience to hunt them down. Re-issues are the way to go.
@@nicksvinylbutty5488 as the famous saying goes, it's the music stupid!... sometimes it's actually just there to be enjoyed for what it is, not simply the object. Cheers!
As a londoner I really enjoyed this video. great advise pay cash, and dont buy in soho. i visted upside down in deptford for the first time the other day, great selection, and good price.
@JB-tn6ty yes, it's pretty good and has come up with some great stuff for me lately. Since I've done this video I've come across a few other good places, so maybe a part 2 if I ever get round to it. Cheers!
Hey Lawrence it was great meeting you last Saturday.. Hopefully another London meet up will happen again 👍
@@robwalkerletthemusicplay Hi Rob, Yes ut was a great day out... really nice to meet you and everyone else... all the best
Great stuff Lawrence, been listening to that Haringey ep. That Jennifer Vyban track is a great tune.
@@Harrispilton22 it's a nice one... and technically it's a 12" ep which plays at 45, so it won't upset your 12" fixation! Cheers
Hello Lawrence, It was so great meeting you on our SOHO walkabout. I had such a fabulous day and week in London, and thanks for the history of cholera. Cheers mate!!!
@@mazzysmusic Hi Mazzy, thanks for inspiring a great day out... think of cholera, think of me! All the best
Loved that Dancer track..cool groove. The Plena track too..made me think of Cortijo.. great bassoon.. wasn’t it Bass clarinet though?
@Ed-Topo-108 I think your probably right about the clarinet, but basoon is such a fine word it would be a shame to miss the opportunity to use it! Plena definitely has the Cortijo sound, that's a good call. Cheers Ed
@@melomano4145hard to beat the bassoon!
Hi Laurence. I don’t know that Starvue tune but it sounds great. Lovely smooth strings. And that Spacy album sounds cool too. Again, not a tune Ive heard before. Another video that’s gonna be tough on the wallet! Have a good weekend. Cheers. John
Hi John, Starvue is a classic... not really worth it on original though. I really like Spacey. It sounds very different to a lot of other stuff I have. Need to be careful with Japanese music... it's a slippery slope! A shop specialising in Japanese imports has recently opened in Hoxton too, this could get messy! Cheers
Ahhhhhh Al Dos band top album 👍 , i am happy you show this lp .👍 Starvue , a master class album 👍 Tatsuro Yamashita , super japan lp 👍 Thanks for your video Bro. 👍😉😉🤩
@@zal226 cheers Zal.... there's some great reissues... so pleased to have them... all the best!
@@melomano4145. Thansk my friend 👍😉
Hey Lawrence. Brilliant meeting you Saturday. Are you familiar with 'The Dierdre Wilson Tabac' 'I Cant keep From Crying Sometimes'? Its a fantastic bit of Jazz/soul..& a one from the last few years The Mario Bondi quintet 'This is what you are,' which is again a jazzy finger snapper with great soul horns, a brilliant recent discovery for me on a 12"
@Harrispilton22 hi Harris, the deirdre wilson tabac is a classic... really love that one. I like the Mario bondi tune as well (of course you have it on 12 inch!)... its giving me slightly chris rea home for Christmas vibes, but that's not a bad thing. Great to see everyone this week, all the best
For me as a German it‘s really funny that you recommend James Last. Was the music of my parents‘ partys in the 70s.
I am going to visit London in October and will certainly follow your recommendations. Thanks.
@OD-bo5jq great places if you like something different, cheers!
Great selection! I love Donald Byrd.
@@OleD-HH thanks!
me too!!! very good player.
Back in the 80's, my favourite was Rhythm Records, in Camden. They had good folk, blues, rock & obscure vinyl.
@@iangee3311 that was a great place... I used to go there a lot... some great second hand stuff at great prices... sadly long gone now.
When i was living in London my regular haunts included shops in Northfields, Ealing, Shades, Notting Hill Gate, Rebel Records, Sellanby in South Harrow, many not there anymore.
@slowpawstevet3676 the list of long lost London record shops is long... let's hold on to the ones that are left... cheers!
Thanks for the tip about James Last’s Voodoo Party - been listening to it today, super funky stuff, love it!
@@glen-scott I don't have that one, but it's a blast. Cheers!
Smooooth. I like a bit of easy listening. The problem with many of the albums is the varying quality of tune choices, with a couple of bangers counteracted by a handful of syrupy cheese-fests. I found that reissue of the D'Angelo album in a charity shop in Beverley about 20 years ago...Funny how one remembers these details... Considering that it was released in 2002, it must've been pretty new when I found it. Damn you! I now feel the urge to fish out some easy listening records. Hedley
@anotherfatbeardedmantalkin5893 my apologies. I'm trying not to get sucked in myself! Your right though, there is some absolute tosh on these records as well. I have resisted the urge to get too deep into the charity shops as there really is a limit to the amount of this stuff anyone needs. Cheers, Laurence
I love easy listening when it goes funky and have 100s of lps. The easy listening genre tends to go more funky jazz rather than 'soul' but appreciate the lines between soul and jazz funk blur. Keith Mansfield's Soul Thing for example is funky big band, which accounts for a lot of funky easy imo. John Schroeder's Working In The Soul Mine and 2 lps by John Brown Juniors Go-Go Music are very much soul driven. If we're talking true easy stalwarts then even Percy Faith and Ray Conniff have their moments. And does it get any better than Harry Roche's Spiral LP and the epic jazz funk of the title track? But I could make endless suggestions so I'll stop other than to say keep looking in those cheap bins and charities. These records are still possible to find and ignored by the majority. Cheers Nige
@nigelcampag1290 it's always quite a slog going thorough the cheap stacks... I really appreciate the titles you mentioned as it gives me something to look out for. Cheers!
Ha!! No way. I think ive picked up a copy of that Tony Hatch LP today, just with a different sleeve, will have to check, definitely got a version of that tune on it though. Great video btw, and I love that James Last album!! Fair to say I also love looking for a tune hidden away on some unlikely bargain bin LP. Success rate is not that high but there are a few here that came to mind. Not all soulful but a couple.... Love the Paul Mauriat. That's the only Mancini album I've got and its not really a cheap one but still value for how good it is. That tune especially... ruclips.net/p/PL_JenlCyGlN9Vd_u3_npIvS50ROLnM0tf&si=G9ZkkWtjTBIIRDLD Also check out the version of I can't stand the rain on this. Its great. Starts 6mins in.... ruclips.net/video/wbIlwg71KgU/видео.htmlsi=BSwihttEcLZbmzb2
Yes, I think the first editions come with a different cover. Great minds think alike! It's always worth a delve into the world of easy cheese, but there's so much forgettable stuff. It's handy to have the Internet to help. I wouldn't fancy trawling through charity shops in search of gold; it could take a lifetime. Cheers!
Some Loungecore classics there! Never heard that version of Sun Goddess before…amazing. Used to know a bassist who’d played with James Last in the late 70’s. He said it was the best band he was ever in. Great musicians, luxury hotels and good money too!
I'd expect nothing less! James Last seems to epitomise the polyester sophistication of the era. I'm quite sold on this version of Sun Goddess. It's a keeper. Cheers!
This sort of music was the staple of Radio2 in the 70s which I had thrust on me as a child lol. That said, I always have a rummage through the Easy Listening section in charity shops, you never know what you might find!
It's all about the rummaging, you never know what you might find! Charity shops only ever seem to turn up marching band music round these parts... all the best
this genre reminds me of barry white and his mfsb orchestra or is it the love unlimited orchestra, grtz from the netherlands 🇳🇱
Yeah that Tony Hatch record definitely reminded me of the Love Unlimited orchestra.
Yes, it really does. There's actually a vocal version of this by Screaming Jay Hawkins where he gurns and gurgles his way through... I prefer this one. Cheers!
Nice picks mate. Sarah Vaughan Feelin' Good and A Time In My Life lps both have their funky moments and are great cheapies. Jazz singer getting funky doesn't get any better than Blossom Dearie - I Like London In The Rain, which I know you will be very familiar with. Regards Nige
@nigelcampag1290 that's a great one... been on my radar for a while, but a bit out of my league! Chicken feathers is another good one, I can't remember the singers name, but again, a megabucks record... I'll look out for the cheapies. Cheers!
@@melomano4145 Took me a long time to find a Blossom Dearie but it's one of those a dealer could just assume it's a cheapie and put out in their cheap bin. Hope you find one. The Sarah Vaughan tracks to check from those two lps btw are Evil Ways and Inner City Blues, both on YT of course. Cheers Nige
@@nigelcampag1290 will check them out. Cheers!
The Peacock is a solid and under rated Lp, I own it!!! Side 2 is where the magic happens. 'X Dreams' worth a listen as well, but not as strong. The Hipsters look for- 'I'm the one', which is one to avoid!
@miketomlin6040 Great, I'll check them out. I really enjoy this one, do a little exploring sounds good. I will consider myself forewarned about the hipsters choice!
I'm The One is great but it's not soulful funk as such. More in the electronic psych vein but still gets funky . It does sell for a few quid though.
@@nigelcampag1290 Hello Hipster.
@@miketomlin6040 Haha, back at ya mate. Although I bought it in the early 00s for £7 so that might make me pre-hipster?
@@nigelcampag1290 You are safe, a hipster record is overhyped, costs a lot and the muzak is poor, or at best average. MellowMan has one on his wall, the Mason effort!
Excellent selection of funky tunes there. Great stuff!! I purchased that Natalie Cole album not so long ago.
@spectrum_archives Thanks, it's an interesting LP and she has a great voice. Cheers!
Ooh! that Gloria Lynne is wonderful - just bagged a copy! Brian Bennet from the Shadows! Great session drummer...love that Annette Peacock - very sexy album...excellent selections as ever Lawrence
@drrhythmn glad you got a copy of Gloria Lynne, there's some great stuff there... I always try to spread the word on that LP. Enjoy!
@@melomano4145 the Gloria Lynne arrived today - wow! What an album - the title track is 🔥! Thank you for turning me onto it
@@drrhythmn it's a beauty... brings to mind warm summer evenings with long shadows. Hope to hear it on your show!
Always some great selections. Love that you put a spotlight on Alice from my home country of Sweden. It is still like a 5 pound record over here. But the track you played is a great one indeed.
@magnuslarsson9161 it's a lovely one... Sadly a bit more than £5 outside Sweden, but I got it very reasonably a while ago. I wonder what other gems are hidden on Swedish cheap heat. Cheers!
@@melomano4145 Sadly i think "brexit" messed up a lot of record prices. I mean i used to buy so much stuff from the UK. But now i get hit with an extra 25% in taxes when importing to sweden. And i guess it is the same of for exampel Swedish records coming in to the UK. So that lone would make it more expensive.
@magnuslarsson9161 yes it's been a real pain... and I think discogs and Ebay have increased overseas charges so it's not really worth it anymore. I used to get stuff from the US and Europe and get some deals; not anymore!
Salena Jones does a great version of Am I the Same Girl /Soulful Strut on another of her albums “Everybody’s Talking About Salena Jones”. Will bag a copy of that album just for that track, if I ever see it out in the wild. Cheers Lawrence 🙏
@andyshacks7812 Cool, yes, I remember that Soul Brothers put out a 45 reissue recently. I'll look out for that one. Cheers!
Great selection my friend 👍.Thanks .👍😉
@zal226 Thanks, Zal... It's a pleasure
Hi Laurence. The Annette Peacock album is great. Her records are pretty hard to find. Love this theme. Will try to do a response 👍
Give it a go, I bet you've got loads of stuff to fit the bill. Cheers!
Interesting selection of records I will look for some of those titles. Another female Soul Jazz vocalist that is a favorite is Eloise Laws, sister to the Ronnie & Hubert Laws. Look for ELOISE lp 1977 ABC Records a great album. ✌
@johnmoreno96 yes... I have a great one from her. A bit more disco, but top stuff. Cheers!
Nice selections.. not heard that Annette Peacock album for years. Tony Levin on bass?
@Ed-Topo-108 it says here John Mackenzie... great record though! Cheers
North Londoner here , so spend way too much time in Alan's Records and The Little Record shop . Flashback Crouch End is my favourite . Really missed Rat Records when it disappeared and excited to try Upside Down . Also enjoy the 2 Record shops in Greenwich . Great video
@grahamallen9393 cheers! Rats was a great loss, but upsidedown is pretty good. Not quite like all those great shops up north, but like I said it's probably best not to have them too close or else I'd get too carried away!
Excellent stuff. I can confirm Rise Above well worth a visit, the best ones are always a little away from the main drag. The Crouch End Flashback also and I'm a fellow South Londoner. You have to schlep to get the best stuff!
@tidybear101 I think it's probably best that way. If I had one of those shops on my doorstep, it could end in disaster. And it's a nice way to explore the nooks and crannies of the city. Cheers!
Blue Note + Mizell brothers + Donald or Bobbi. Sumptuously gorgeous music. Been listening to it since the mid-70s. New York Times (BH) and Think Twice (DB) I love in particular. Thank you
@davidstocker5736 it's all beautiful stuff... It's amazing that the Mizells managed to fit so much great work in that time. So many great productions they were involved in, and I keep discovering more. Cheers!
I would love to visit London and go record shopping(and also stop at a Pub) someday. Here in Los Angeles, Southern California there are too many record stores and record shows it can be a blessing or a curse because I spent lots of money $$$$$ !! ✌🎼🎶🎵
@johnmoreno96 I bet it's easy to get carried away... fortunately I don't have a shop right next door, but there are plenty of pubs, so you've given me a bright idea for this sunny evening. Cheers!
All killer soul groove or jazz groove, Marlena Shaw’s cover of “California Soul” is excellent. Would be great if we could do another livestream. This is my favorite genre, Keep Diggin’ ✌
@johnmoreno96 yes, she's a real favourite of mine!
I have and love Blacks and Blues, Street Lady and other Byrds, but not Satin Doll or Fancy Dancer. Always interested in anything Mizell related and I’m sure it’s worth checking out the others. I like what I’ve heard from Marlena Shaw so far. Her Montreux recordings are pretty impressive. The Gene Harris sounds interesting. Thanks for sharing.
@jackblondie9424 there's some great stuff in there. I'd love to have a black and blues. The time might come. Do check out marlena shaw, she has a very rich body of work worth investigating. Cheers!
I totally agree- Fancy Dancer is a superb album. Bought the reissue a couple of years ago and it gets played a lot!
@@andyshacks7812 it's a great one... I held off the reissue and found this a while back for the same price... a classic record all the same. Cheers!
@@melomano4145 Yeah think I’ll look out for an original. Sometimes they mess about with the sound too much for my liking on reissues, though having said that, my reissue copy sounds pretty good! 👍
@andyshacks7812 I've replaced reissues with originals a few times, and usually you can feel a difference, but more than anything, it's the romance of an original copy that gives it an extra hit. I've heard that bluenote reissues are pretty good on the whole, so there might not be a big difference in sound.
Wow, I've never heard of those first four you showed. I'll have to look into those. Bobbi Humphrey is one of my all time favorites! I love the flute as well!
@AsTheTableTurns if you don't know Marlena Shaw, you've got some great music to discover. Check outbher Spice of Life album for a real classic. I'm a big fan of Bobbi Humphrey as well and need to explore more. It's always so exquisitely produced with a great sound. Cheers!
Jazz is a very broad spectrum, lots of 'types' with minimal common ground. Jazz is probably my favourite genre, next to Disco, but 99% plus of Jazz Lp's are garbage. Your wall supports this, the mindnumbing banal Guns N Roses and at times strong Bowie pop tunes! If you can tolerate or admire Humphrey's Fluffy Dancer Lp I'd have though a lot of Smooth Jazz might appeal to you?
@miketomlin6040 Haha, classic Tomlin put down! I'm not reaching for the Kenny G just yet, though my taste for quiet storm slow jams is sending me into dangerous territory. As for Guns n Roses and Bowie, they are there for the sake of domestic harmony. The missus is big into metal and classic rock, so as there is balance on the soundsystem, there is balance on the wall. Cheers!
@@melomano4145 Put Down? I was simply pointing out the sensibility that might find Humphrey's effort of value may well find similar sounds in another genre to be so, albeit not that far removed from hers. I remember you saying before er indoors had a penchant for cockrock! That's an interesting psychodynamic, perhaps she should do a video explaining the appeal of it to her? A person I see often identifies as a 7th wave feminist or somesuch, in her vinyls I found a Black Sabbath Lp, I pointed out this was likely problematic vis a vis her overt value system.
Nice to see another Marlena Shaw fan out there. She is so underrated. Who is this bitch, Anyway? Might be her best on Blue Note but they all have gems on them. I have all her records. My fav would be Spice of Life on Cadet. My fav Bobbi record on Blue Note is Blacks and Blues. But fancy Dancer is also a masterpiece.
@magnuslarsson9161 Yes, Marlena Shaw is a true great. I'd really love to have those LPs you mentioned. There's always good stuff to be found on them. I'd really like to get an original blacks and blues, but might have to settle for the reissue. Cheers!
Great selection on Blue Notes label my friend 👍😉
@zal226 thanks zal... I knew you'd understand 👍
Good video. I don't get into London (I'm south) much these days. I remember Haggle Vinyl in Islington (long gone) and all the Hanway Street record shops sadly closed a few years back. I wonder if you know Arch Records (within the Sugahill café) on Sydenham Hill?
@brucevair-turnbull8082 yes I've been to sugarhill cafe a few times. Some good stuff there. There's a long list of long gone shops. It would be interesting to see a map of London's ghost records shops. Cheers!
@@melomano4145 One shop which resurrected itself is Revolution Records on Penge High St. I used to go in there in 1977 to look at all the punk singles. Two years ago it returned.
