Hand-made fishing floats and a bit of fishing... All aimed at the amateur angler. 🎣
The Making Of - The Balsa Bodied Stick Float
The Balsa Bodied Stick Float.
We have got a bit more technical in this episode. We are introducing a couple of new tools to our float making arsenal.
We attempt to make a stick float from a piece of balsa wood dowel and a bamboo skewer. I'll show you how I make my style of stick float, and then we'll go and get it wet at the lake! Enjoy...
Ps. Sorry for the delay in getting this out there... Life just gets in the way of art sometimes! Fear not, there's lots more to come!
If you would like to purchase my handmade floats, they are on eBay www.ebay.co.uk/usr/andy.bbf and you can also follow me on Instagram @BlackBottomFloats on my float crafting adventures!

The Making Of Black Bottom Floats (Bobber) - The Origin Story
Great tutorial, but my floats came out too heavy, where as soon as i add shot, it sinks. Could it be because i used wood and not bamboo skewers? I even ensured i hollowed out the bamboo body, but still the same issue. I used quite thin bamboo.
@wildiebeast Hmmm. 🤔 The bamboo cane used to make the body of the float varies greatly in its density. I have used thick pieces of Bamboo which require very little shotting weight. I have used thinner pieces which need more. It is a little unpredictable, and it is why I tend to use Sarkanda Reed more. My suggestion is to experiment with different thicknesses of Bamboo or try sarkanda reed. I only use Bamboo skewers (3mm) for the foot or inserts. I think wood may effect the buoyancy. I am however, chuffed that you've had a go at making your own! Also, it's worth saying that I am still learning myself and still experimenting with different ideas and materials. Don't give up! I hope this helps a little? Tight lines. Andy.
Thanks for the reply. I'll give it a go with different materials.
@@wildiebeast Good luck. 👍 ❤️🎣❤️
after subbing a few nights ago i'm slowly making my way through your videos.... its nice to watch others and see how they differ slightly to my own float making... you are a natural... do you plan on making the traditional perch bobber and pike gazette bung among your videos, those i would defo love to see your version of them... you make me wanna start again... be good to see you use cork too! keep them coming fella!!! @LondonPredatorAngler who knows what the future holds... I've got a few ideas whizzing round my brain... ❤️🎣❤️
Nice job... used to make my own predator floats... think there is even a few videos on my old channel... might have to return tobmaking them again soon... keep up the nice videos, you present very well BTW 😉👍🏻

Magnifica explicación. A mi también me encanta pescar con equipo “vintage”. Muchísimas gracias por el vídeo.

@@angusmacarthur8375 Thanks for that! I don't do technical! You can probably tell?? ❤️🎣❤️
enjoyed this, what size is the thread ?
@David_11111 Thank you. Thread diameter varies very slightly but usually around 0.21mm. ❤️🎣❤️
Lovely Job Andy, where do you get your round section dowel ? I can only get square section from Hobbycraft. ✌❤ Bob.
Hi again Andy, Ive just recently bought some 4mm cane BBQ sticks and they make some nice Billy Lane style ducker floats and like you say, the optimum length is around 15 cm. I've made a few Avons at around 18 cm and theyre a bit more stable on the river.✌❤ Bob.

Great tutorial Andy, what's the story behind the landing net handle?
@@markrichardson6629 HA! Well spotted! It's an old splitcane boat rod that I converted. Maybe I'll include it in more detail in another film... ❤️🎣❤️
Thanks Andy, looking forward to the next episode.
Another miniature piece of art and great to see it in use with that special old rod - it’s incredible how moving the stories and associations we have with various pieces of kit can become. A lifetime of venues, seasons, outings, weather, captures and angling memories in that cork handle! 🎣

Lovely little avon style float Andy. I've been making some similar cane and balsa floats, I make them in pairs, one Avon and bodied Ducker style. Both on the same little Chinese lathe what a joy they are to make. ✌❤ Bob

Geeat day for Dad. Hopefully take him more often, you will always remember being together. Nice catch.
Thank you! We go as often as time allows, which, during the summer months, is about once a week! Special times... ❤️
Love the video mate ,and editing looks great 👍
It is a lovely read Andy, takes us all back, to the late 70s and 80s.BTW, is float making your full time job, interested as I am retired (early at 61) and an avid float maker over the last four years, for myself mostly . People have said I should do what you do and sell them too, in two minds, dont want to feel pressured. Its a fascinating hobby truly
Hello. Yes, the book is a fab read. You should check out his RUclips channel, too. There is lots of great stuff on there... Sadly, float making isn't a full-time job. 😪 it's only a hobby. But it does allow me to make enough money to pay for my fishing! I think you definitely should do what you think best. I took the plunge into selling as, like you, people said I should. I have a very relaxed approach to what I do and don't pressure myself to have loads of stock. I make floats in my spare time and list them on eBay when they are ready. I only sell what I've already made, so no pressure of deadlines... I have made to order but tell customers that there is a four week wait for orders. I've been very lucky to sell what I've made and pride myself in my customer service! I hope this all makes sense? Thanks for the support and good luck with your float making career! Tight lines. Andy.
Fantastic float and video, mate! One day I'll teach you to shot rigs with a bit of finesse 😘😉 Love the old skool gear too.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it!! 🤣🤣 Thanks for the support!
Calling yourself an amateur is crazy these floats are hand crafted beauties mate. Better then most the top brands
That's extremely kind of you to say, sir. Thank you and thanks for watching... ❤️🎣❤️
Nice video mate explained everything perfectly, time to try it myself
Thank you! The whole point of making these films is to inspire others to have a go! Your comment has made my day! ❤️🎣❤️
I’m glad it did, I do have a shop with my own fishing clothes line but I’ve always wanted to do my own tackle on there, but making it myself was the problem but now I’ve found my starting point, thanks for the video much appreciated ❤🎣
Hi Andy, I was wondering what type of thread is best for the wippings?
Hi there. The thread choice is yours really. Personally I go for a strong Nylon based thread. Cotton threads can leave a fluffy like texture when used. Nylon is smooth and lays nicely. A good rod building nylon thread should work fine. There are lots to choose from on eBay... Hope that helps? Thanks for watching the vids!! ❤️🎣❤️
Don't the extra coats of varnish you put on later alter the shotting? Just wondering... Enjoying your videos btw!
I haven't found that to be the case so far, but if it does, it is by such a small amount it is hardly noticeable. Thanks for the view and support. Best fishes. Andy
@@BlackBottomFloats Thanks Andy. I wouldn't mind a closer look at your float drying setup some time. I have been trying to think of a neat way to do it!
Oh it's ok... I can see clearer on your Goose quill video! 👍
@@BoingBB Thanks for watching!
I find it better to make a pilot hole for the inserts using a round rat tail file, prevents splitting the main body, its a choice thing
Agreed. I definitely use a pilot hole on the thinner reed. A drill bit usually works well. The thicker reed is a little more forgiving. Thanks for watching! Tight lines. Andy.
Nice video andy ,i,v just got a similar belt sander ,not used yet tho ,what grade sandpaper have you got on your sanding belt to shape your sarkanda reed please
Thank you. I use the 400 grit but be gentle. It doesn't take much pressure to shape the reed. It should come with a finer grit too, that's also good. Good luck!
Thank you mate for the advice greatly appreciated
Excellent floats where can I get some from
Hi. Thank you! Well, you could make your own, or you can find my ebay shop at www.ebay.co.uk/usr/andy.bbf Thanks again! 👍 🎣👍
Andy, I use acrylic flourescent, is the Revell stuff oil based?
Hi. Yes. The Revell paint is oil based. I like the colour and finish. I've never got on with acrylic paint and much prefer the enamel type. But, that's just my opinion. 😁🎣👍
Thanks
Excellent 👍 ❤🎣👏
Fanks Mark! 💜
Already subbed up to both of you, and am in no rush to backtrack on that either. TTFN

Love your video's mate
Thank you very much! A few more to come... 👍🎣👍
Brilliant
Just a thought Andy, would super glue, or some other adhesive help to toughen up the soft fibrous material of the Sarkandas reed interior. Like I said, just a thought. ✌❤ Bob.
It's always good to have thoughts! This is how we evolve our styles and techniques. I'd say, give it a go. It certainly wouldn't hurt to try. Personally, once the whipping is on along with a couple of coats of varnish, it will tough enough. 💪🎣 Let me know if it works! 🤞👍🎣
I really must try sarkandas reed Andy. I've made similar style floats using 6mm hard plastic drinking straws, but they have a spiral coloured stripe which I have to paint. The pale colouring of the sarkandas reed really appeals to me, as does the consruction of stepped sarkandas reed bodies. Thankyou for yet another suberb tutorial. ✌❤Bob
Thanks Bob. I have experimented with many different materials over my short time of making floats, even an old small artists paintbrush got turned into a float at one point! (Not my finest achievement!) Sarkanda reed is a brilliant material to work with and really good value for money. I hope you do give it a go, and, if you can, send me some pictures of your efforts so far... 👍 Tight lines. Andy.
Another nice video mate
Thank you. 👍 ❤️🎣❤️
Excellent videos Andy keep em coming mate ❤
Excellent once again Andy, ps have you ever tried a boily drill to start the hole through the Sarkander reed?
A boily drill would be fine to use. Tbh the inner substance of the sarkanda reed is soft enough not to need a drill. However, if it was a particularly thin piece of reed, then using a drill will help to prevent splitting when inserting a skewer. Hope that makes sense?? Thanks for the kind comments. Tight lines!
as usual well made and well demonstrated .thanks for the tips
Thanks for the comments! Much appreciated. 💜🎣💜
