Loved the mixes you came up with 😍. They looked even prettier when the swatches dried more too. I really want to get into ink mixing as well, and that way maybe stop myself from buying too many inks. I want to be able to use and enjoy everything I have and not just accumulate too many in this hobby. Thanks for showing your mixes and keep having fun exploring.

Weirdly enough the two mixes I came up with are blue-t teals that I don't normally go for but maybe I like em caz I made them :P I like your steeped umber mix I feel myself heading into my "dusty" era 😂 Fun as always!

You should be careful mixing inks, especially if you are mixing brands. Not all inks are meant to be mixed and the components that make up different brands don't always play well together. Additionally, most ink brands keep their ink formulas secret/proprietary so it's nearly impossible to know what chemicals make up their inks. Using custom mixes with a dip pen is one thing. Putting them in a fountain pen is another. FYI: Birmingham Pen Company's ink formula is created with the understanding that their inks may be used for mixing. This is why they provide the ink recipes on their site. (You can find more information about this on their website.)

That’s helpful to know. I think the De Atramentis Document inks are made for mixing as well. They even make a "dilution solution” so you can lighten colors without losing the waterproof ink quality.

    • @Bee_Wingz

Hi Natasha, I have heard that if you leave the mix for a few hours or even overnight to see if there is any kind of a reaction is a good idea before putting into a pen for that reason. I haven't tried mixing yet but I also really want to give it a try. What do you think of that idea? And not to mix iron gall inks...

    1. It's crucial to start at the low end with flex pens, to make sure you like them and find them useful (I didn't). I didn't like my first, a Noodler's Nib Creaper, but instead of taking the hint, I bought some more expensive flexers. But they were equally useless to me personally, just more expensive. 2. For drawing I recommend Strathmore Mixed Media paper or Strathmore Bristol board. 3. Isn't the SF Pen Show in August? It was when I went a few years ago. 4. I'm pretty well set up for both pens and inks; this yer I am more focussed on getting rid of the pens I don't use anymore. When they are pretty, it ain't easy...

I don't usually journal on the go, but I have a small pen case that stays in my purse. It only holds 2-3 fountain pens depending on their size. I change out the pens based on the purse I carry. I watched your beginning of the year video where you talked about your fountain pen ink wishes for this year. Let me know if you're interested in ink samples. I'd be happy to send you samples of the inks I have. You don't have any contact info for the channel on the About page otherwise I would have emailed you or DM'd on a different platform. I have the similar In as you have J Herban ' le pussier de Lune" means moon dust ink. I think if you request from that Paris wheel Olive green pen and ask for a barrel replacement they could provide you a replacement pen barrel . Very cool video and thanks for the share.

You're smart for going to samples over bottles. I started getting into fountain pens last year and I had the same mindset that dollar per ml for samples was pretty bad value so I ended up with a ton of bottles of ink that I either don't like that much or I like but realize this looks way too close to something I already bought. Whoops. Also Benus are great if you see a color or design that speaks to you you'll love it. And for paper give Iroful a shot it shows off ink really well but is thicker than Tomoe River so you might like that

Noodlers Ahab Flex pen is often recommended to beginners. The Jot notebooks from Dollar Tree and the Pen and Gear notebooks from Walmart are inexpensive notebooks. The paper in them handle fountain pen ink well. Have fun exploring, but keep in mind that it usually equals spending. I've never been to a pen show, but I have heard many stories. People say to wear comfortable shoes and leave credit cards at home.😉

Great relection. Monteverde omni flex nib with a good wet ink like private reserve I find works great! But with that please know I never tired and expensive flex pen, a gold nob flex pen, or a vintage flex, so my scope is limited.

I’m on the same page as you as far as price per ml for ink samples, this past year I’ve just been sticking with bottles but I would like to try samples more often so I am not committed. I would suggest the monteverde monza 3 it comes with a fine, medium and flex nib and is around the $20-$30 mark depending on where you buy from. I currently switch between the nibs with the same color ink just to see how the ink looks with different nib sizes. The Pilot Prera is good as well I got mine from Amazon and it’s around the $20-30 mark as well, I have mine in the calligraphy nib and it’s been nice using shimmer inks in it.

That was nifty. My top 5: 1. Pelikan 4001 Königsblau; 2. Noodler's Azure; 3. Noodler's Baystate Blue; 4. Sheaffer Skrip Red; 5. Noodler's Gruene Cactus Eel. No system. I like lots of colors, but for whatever reason those are the five I've used the most of. I'm surprised none of them are black. Go figure. On the private reserve, it looked to me like there was some ink in the lid when you put it back on, and it just dripped from there. No cracks in the bottle or lid.
