At my work at COX Communications we sponsored a team that the Goodwill would bring in for a couple hours and they would pack our welcome packets for us, what it meant for them was to get real world experience, some spending money in a safe environment and learn lessons and routine. Then they would got to parks, zoos, Target stores, etc. so they were not trapped indoors, a great program. One guy named Dewan, could walk out to any city look at for about 15 minutes then go inside and with a regular ballpoint pen could draw the whole city on a Legal Size paper down to every building, window, tree bush and sign. Every detail, I mean everything, even trash cans, trash on the ground, cracks in the wall, Graffiti on the walls even spelled correctly and yet he could not talk or write. It was all an image to him in his mind. He also never drew any people or animals, which I never understood. Very aloof but super nice guy we got along great. I tried to buy drawings from him but Goodwill would not allow me do do it. A different time I was at Home Depot with my two young daughters and a guy named Justin raced past me from the Goodwill Team running from an older couple, I was like hey Justin, he stopped and looked at me, he also could not talk but he understood you, I knew him 4 months and thought he had no intellect, then the lady that drove him to my work said oh he understand everything. I What, why am I just hearing this?! His very older adoptive parents came over real fast and were shocked, and asked him I knew him, I said yes I work with him every day at COX. He had taken about a dozen of the Home Depot flyers from the bin at the front door. I looked at Justin and said, "Justin only one per bag you know the rules", then he put the rest back and kept one. The parents were blown away that he understood and listened to me. I said I spend every day with him, he listens when you are firm but nice. Justin was from India, had a temperature of 108 to 110 as a child and it fried his ability to speak. The older couple could not have kids so adopted him. I got a call from my HR on Monday thanking me because the parent's had called to commend me. Even HR didn't know what we did. From my decades of experience HR are actually a pretty self centered group, they do the hiring and I yet wouldn't even hire most of those I have met in HR. I own my own business now, so I now do the hiring.
