Long time still shooter with thoughts
My favorite photos of 2024
These are some of my favorites photographs from 2024, broken down by category/genre...overall, I shot a lot less bird and landscape photography this year, and quite a bit more macro and street which surprised me! Of course I had to learn video and RUclips amid all of it...I'd love to hear which photos you like the most.
Thanks to everyone who has joined me on this channel in 2024, what a fun start to this RUclips journey!

Excellent photos Scott. Really enjoyed hear you provide a little description of each as we moved through the video. Wishing you well in 2025!
Enjoyed your photos, 5:28 is nice but i wonder what it would be if you tried slow shutter in shutter-priority mode (with ND filter maybe) Slow shutter is hard, surely if panning
Really like your macro-photos!
Thanks so much! Glad to hear that.
Amazing, I love your style! My favourite is the photo of the fire in the air. Btw, how did the fire get there?
@kqlmqr thanks a bunch, I really appreciate that! It’s a pressure release along a natural gas line that they burn off from time to time. You can see it from a mile away!
@@scotttuckerphotography Ah I see, that's so cool!

I appreciate the kind words on them...as to the genres/themes, what I shoot any given year can be quite different from the previous, so these are what I had to work with for 2024!

@@mpactdesignmedia the Nikon colors work so well there! Have a new vid coming with more from that trip.
nice! gotta try this out. my heart wants classic chrome but my head always makes me recover shadows in post. i yearn for sooc freedom.
I really like using DR400 and a bit of extra exposing to the right, since DR400 will control the highlights well. Sometimes really requires an ND midday though.
Pro here! I never shoot outside of manual so the pasm doesn’t bother me. You can set the af lock to 3d tracking that creates a box that locks on what ever you want until you release it. It’s the ONLY af setting I use for 100% of my work. Monochrome memoirs has a good vid that shows you how to set it up. Also, 512 micro sds are $30 and run as fast as the fastest SD’s you can’t get so it’s super economical to have an extra back up that’s cheap to upkeep. I want to mod the dial with a stopper to make the iso stop at 100 when I click it all the way down. Moving iso to my left hand and not worrying about it locking would actually be insanely faster than taking turns with holding iso and bringing down the shutter while firing high stress moments. It ticks all the boxes for me and it’s oh soooo beautiful
Funny that we run our cameras so differently and are both very happy with the results. I've never had a ZF image I couldn't post process well with an ISO 3200 ceiling for auto iso, and all the stress of managing it poofs away =)
@@scotttuckerphotography hey we got the same whip, I’m just using the paddle shifters is all haha. I’ve had this same sensor since the z6 and I can’t leave. I’ve tried the other bodies. It simply renders exactly what I want and you can do so much to the files.
Two things from my point of view as a photographer with 30+ years doing it. First, people need to learn about the auto-iso works (not you) , basically if you set the auto iso as max to 3200, when you move the "C" to 5000 iso means that the auto iso is off, if you do the auto iso range to 64K, of course the dial makes no sense. Second, this is a sub $2K camera... Slap a voiglander and use the manual focus and you have a good camera comparing to $9-$11K offerings... I understand that some rant is needed to get views, but I think all RUclips should read the WHOLE manual before post anything LOL. Third, if you slap an aperture control lens and go manual you will learn that you only worry about speed. I can't wait to Sony release their version of Nikon ZF to all the playstation fan boys starting to say "Nikon ZF killer", I am not a fan boy, but we need to learn more about the camera before talking about it... It is like people discovering the "Shutter Angle" on Sony and raving about it... Since Lumix has it for almost a decade :) Thanks for the video! Amazing work!
I really appreciate your thoughts and sentiments. The only reason I fired up a channel was because I'm so sick of what "average" youtube content has become...all rage and vinegar from people who either 1) are willfully ignorant about features/concepts or 2) are just rage baiting because that's what sells the best these days. That said, you can't lead every horse to water...I can show a clearly demonstrable bug with AutoISO that is easily replicable by anyone, and people will still deny it. I know the shooting experience of a ZF + CV isn't "Leica-teir" but it shows that you don't need a $10,000+ body + lens to make great content. If you get away from all the brand fanaticism you'll find so many great options out there.
Close yet not something i pursue, great recipe anyways keep it up bro ❤
@@Kojot1605 thanks appreciate it!
I feel like photography causes me to slow down and recognize the beauty around me. If I pick up a camera, I immediately stop thinking about the trappings of daily life and start looking for something interesting and beautiful to capture. How can that not be good for our mental state? All the more important in our current state of the world.
@@stevengower7396 hard to argue any of that! The most important thing I can do as a photographer is put forth beauty for others.
Have you tried this lens on your ZF?
@@mattandrews5983 yep! It’s kind of a chonky boi on the ZF but with the SmallRig grip still balances ok, results are 95% the same as the Z9 as shown in the video.
I really like the final shot, super inspiring.
Thanks much, I’m glad you liked it.
Man, I love this camera. I came to it from Fuji as well. Same complaints about the baffling dials decision, but the biggest struggle for me is the glare through the EVF. I wear glasses, which puts my eye even further away, and it’s a beat down. I end up having to shoot with one hand shielding my eye, or I have to take my glasses off.
If they would give us the thicker focus confirmation box, the glare could be somewhat mitigated, but as it is today, it’s tough!
CC: The grain on landscapes is kinda mehh.. for closer subjects gain is nice, of course all subjective, otherwise great shots! I like the BIF
I'm getting used to seeing my own stuff on a 65" TV...what looks in post on a 5K monitor sometimes doesn't hold up, good points. Any particular ones stand out as egregious?
@@scotttuckerphotography - The one at 2:44, it almost looks like it was taken with a film camera.
@@autoexoticswestcoast almost all of the mono shots were shot on HP5 film.
You obviously haven’t used the 26mm.
No clue what this is even supposed to mean.
I'm not sure how it really saves time unless your comparison is full manual. If I set aperture and SS while letting camera do ISO vs. setting aperture and ISO and let camera do SS, isn't that the same number of steps? I most often shoot aperture priority and adjust ISO while watching SS to make sure its fast enough.
@@stevengower7396 you aren’t controlling a crucial setting in those modes unlike manual with auto ISO.
@scotttuckerphotography if I'm raising ISO until the shutter speed is acceptable, how is that not the same as raising the shutter speed and ignoring ISO. I'm not opposed to your method, I've tried it, just don't see much difference. In difficult light I'm going manual anyway.
@@stevengower7396 you are sacrificing the creative element of shutter speed chasing iso which is largely irrelevant in terms of the look and feel of the photo. Ideally you should be setting aperture and shutter speed to dictate the creative look of the photo, and whether you choose to set iso manually or let it float in auto is a personal decision.
@@scotttuckerphotography of course, that's what I am doing. I get that adjusting ISO until desired SS seems a little backward. But years of not trusting cams to do it is hard muscle memory to retrain.
I had come to a similar conclusion when pairing my shots from the Zf with modern day noise reduction software and haven’t looked back on iso since setting the dial to auto iso. There have only been 1 or 2 shots that I wasn’t happy with and that was more to do with the quality and lack of light, rather than the noise performance. It’s incredibly nice not to have to even think about juggling iso values.
@@from.memories 100%! I’m all for anything that gets the hardware out of my way.
Dude same here , I had the x100v for the last 2 years and well for me I started having problems with it . I tried to have Fuji fix it and they couldn’t . So I sold it and went for the zf . I had the first pre order at my local shop . When that thing came in I was like nope and talked so much shit about it . What a nice wooden spoon
Its funny how some folks use to point out that (put camera name here) has .01 stops less dynamic range than Nikon or Sony or vice versa. Everybody pointed to the photons to photos dynamic range charts and the battle enraged on many forums about this and now we toss it all away with auto iso. If I absolutely need that shot I will sacrifice dynamic range with ISO but otherwise I dont want my fancy new $8k camera to have less dynamic range than a camera built 15 years ago like the Canon 7D as an example. Can others chime in on how they feel about dynamic range due to auto iso. I do use auto iso for video but for photos I pay close attention when using auto iso. For birding some dark days I have no choice and have to accept ISO 3200 but I would rather lower it to 1600 - shoot under exposed and push the gain up in post. The image detail does disappear at higher ISOs thats a fact. Incidentally I just traded in my Canon R6mk2 for a Nikon ZF - first time shooting Nikon and the iso settings are driving me up the wall :)
There is so much to unpack with this question. 1) People misuse the entire point of what DR is and how it's measured. Let's say you have a scene that is pushing 12 stops...guess what? Almost no camera, not even one with 13 stops, is going to give you a good photo of it. Now, will the 13 camera resolve shadows just a teensy bit better than a camera with 12 in that scenario? Sure. 2) These cameras today, even if they have the same DR on paper as a 7D, render noise and tonal transitions better. You can't just compare the numbers. 3) As said in the video, ISO 3200 on a modern camera far surpasses the same ISO value on an older camera, so you have to test your camera and find the highest ISO you're comfortable with. The only way you're squeezing every drop of DR out of your camera is to shoot at base ISO. It's a rare day to be blessed with good enough light with the appropriate subject to be able to do that. I just stopped caring about maximizing every drop of IQ and focus on trying to capture moments with the best settings I can for that moment of light.
Im relatively new to photography (just for a hobby) and have been using auto iso really and i agree with you, i use a fuji camera and the compensation exposure dials are always helpful to when im not happy with what iso the camera is choosing
@@SergioMnl funny enough, I’m the most annoyed with Fuji’s implementation of it 🤣 it still works as intended and is really nice to have.
@@scotttuckerphotography it's the only implementation i know so i can't comment on other brands, but that's the beauty and excitement of the camera world, there's so many implementations to try and discuss about (albeit the pricey process of doing so)
I have three main reasons that I still use manual ISO, 1) I'm an amateur, will have to nail the triangle in my head. 2) I have a wish that I'll be able to shoot film in the future, if it's still existing then. 3) When I tried manual mode with auto ISO on, I found that every photo I shot have the same light level, it made the dawn light and the dusk look the same perfectly lit, which not my intention, I want the light level in the scene reflect the time of shooting like early morning, late, afternoon, evening, have different light level, and I don't want to adjust them in post. But yeah, everyone can do any way they want, no rules basically. Thank you for the video.
You’re definitely right about certain situations benefiting from setting it, like dusk or dawn. Depending on your film camera you could still meter in a priority mode as well, but always better to learn full manual first. Thanks for stopping by.
How do I set auto ISO on my Canon A1? Do I need to buy different film? 😉
@@jwbarsby just buy one of those drop in digital sensor conversion kits!
@ Seriously though, I often shoot film and digital at the same time, and sometimes set my Fuji to my film speed. That way I can match the settings between my cameras. Low ISO/ASA still gives the best results on both film and APSC cameras if there is enough light.
@ I’ve found even ISO 3200 is perfectly fine on the new 40mp Fuji sensors, not so much on the older ones. Lower is always better, but an appropriate ceiling makes it easy mode.

Great perspective. Everyone wants you to chase the latest and greatest of which I am guilty, but you hit it on the head. ISO should be a secondary thought. In fact, when you shoot film, you are confined to whatever your film is. You only adjust shutter and DOF.
@@Jellings71 exactly right about film…it becomes a total afterthought and all you worry about is making sure your bokeh aesthetic and shutter speed are dialed in. Same concept! Glad you liked the video, thanks for popping by.

You brought up all the negative points that kept me from buying the Zf. You didn't convince me to change my mind but I love the wooden spatula mic holder. I think I'll wait for a mk2 of the Zf and see if Nikon comes out with some real lenses with aperture rings meant for this camera.
@@dan.allen.digital certainly didn’t make this video to try to convince anybody of anything, merely to explain how my preconceived notions were not exactly correct. I’m excited to see what Nikon does in the future with all the feedback they are getting.
I was on the fence between the Zf and the Z6iii for my second body, and I went for a slightly used(14000 shutter count) Zf. I had listened to all the reviews, and what I would say is: do not listen to the negatives, they are really minor, this camera is a great camera, it is my favorite unless I need 45MP, which is not that often. It brought back the joy of photography, it is really hard to describe, but it just makes you think a bit more and then rewards you, and the controls, once you set it up the way you like it, are just perfect, they are just different from other bodies. I am an amateur, so pros with specific needs might not like it, I actually got mine from a pro. Anyways, if you want to fall in love with a camera as you did with your first one, this is the one to get.
@@brunopaquin5637 i’m not sure I would say don’t listen to the negatives, but definitely take them with a grain of salt, because as you say this is a very different camera than your average. You will not shoot this camera like you shoot a regular PASM mirrorless. Glad you’re enjoying it.
@@scotttuckerphotography Agreed, and thank you for the video !
What Nikon should have done with the Zf. First they should have handed the person designing the controls a FM3A and a F2 Photomic. On those cameras where did you find the film speed setting (ISO)? On the shutter dial. That is a scheme that would easily fit the Zf and would allow the left dial to be re-purposed with more useful functions. Such as the Mode selection and underneath you could have the selection for the Single and Continuous Release options. Now, moving to the front on the film cameras where the self timer lever was placed you could have a similar shaped 3 position lever to control Focus mode. Front Command dial - lose it. Aperture can be controlled with the rear command dial because the shutter speed is only set by the Shutter Speed Dial unless it has been set to A. On the I Menu there will be some dedicated buttons that work with the Command Dial and these buttons will be to the left on the I Menu for an easy reach for the left thumb. One is The AF Area mode setting, hold down the button and roll thru the settings with the Command Dial. Another is the Auto ISO maximum, hold the button down and the max is set. The toggle switch for the Auto ISO will also reside in the I menu. The lock on the left dial can get ditched. It's a PITA on my Z7 II to have to hold that stupid button down while fighting the heavy resistance on the detents for that dial. Rest assured that dial won't get bumped by accident.
That would have been a very interesting camera indeed!
@@scotttuckerphotography Something I have learned is that if the Zf is set to Manual with the Auto ISO on you have complete control of the Aperture, Shutter Speed, and minimum ISO without having to touch any of the menus at all. Then turn the screen into the body and the only device that draws power is the EVF, which turns off when you remove your eye from the EVF. Think about the effect of that on battery life. Then think about how film like the camera will handle. The more I use the Zf the more I enjoy using it.
@ that’s exactly how I use mine while taking photos.
I was dismissive of the camera at first, even after holding it in my hands at the store. I ended up giving it another try and fell in love with it. I’m also shooting it with Voigtlander lenses and get what you mean when you say it unlocks some magic. It’s a camera that I consistently want to use, and although without some smaller gripes regarding buttons and dials it never fails to deliver.
Glad to hear others are finding the same spark of joy, especially paired with the Voigts. Which lenses are you using?
I got the Nikon Zfc a few months ago and I am glad I did over the Nikon zf. Smaller body and smaller lenses, taking pictures in public areas does not scream “photographer!”. I am waiting for a z5ii or the z6ii to drop price to $1,299 to go full frame.
I wish Nikon had more APS-C lens options for the Zfc class of cameras. Keep on eye on the next black friday/refurb sale, you should be able to snag a Z6ii for about that. It's down to $1391 right now and they usually give you 10% off during refurb sales.
I love that I can use it Film style with the analog dials and my Vintage Nikon glass with the FTZ adapter. Then I can put the Z lenses on like the 180-600mm Z, and shoot DSLR style. My favorite part of the camera is when using Vintage lens on it and get the square box over the eye for focus.
Yes, it’s great how it can pull double duty like that pretty seamlessly. Wild man putting that honking tele on it! 🤣
You can definitely get focus confirmation on old glass it has focus confirmation even on old manual lenses even detects eyes
The lens has to have contacts for focus confirmation. You can get subject detection with any lens. The vast majority of film era Nikkor lenses don’t have contacts.
The influencer shift from X100 to Zf over the past couple of months is hilarious.
@@nickthaskater well it’s a better camera in a whole lot of ways and a lot of people are figuring that out. Plus, you can, you know, BUY one 😉
@@scotttuckerphotography funny you mention the availability as the Zf is now backordered in many places, such as Nikon Canada's website.
@@nickthaskater it’s in stock at Henry’s…more than you can say for the Fuji!
Funny enough about three months ago I came to similar conclusions about the Zf’s grandfather, the Df. Controls seemed ill thought out compared to Fuji. Manual dials and menus conflicted. Had to go way back for Nikkor lenses seemed built for this model. The solution for me? Manual Voigtlander F series (28/40/58). I have several CVs, including the two APO-Lanthars you mentioned for another system, but of course I can’t adapt to F. Anyway, like you, I have 47 & 50MP cameras, but this even lower 16MP, does just fine. Hell, so does the 5D Classic’s 12MP.
@@ricblessing3400 have owned those 3 CV lenses (just rebought the 40 Ultron but the older, smaller version), I can imagine they are fantastic on the Df. I wish they could have made a Df II with all the modern niceties as one last F camera that honored the Nikon legacy. The OG 5D was one of my favorite cameras, simply beautiful files every time.
Delightful. Thanks.
Glad you enjoyed it!
There are things about the Zf that I don’t like. I also want to pick it up and use it every single day. And if I’m honest, none of the things I don’t like about it have interfered with operating the camera. If you own one, take the time to settle into configuring and understanding how to make it work for you. The Zf is my favorite digital camera in a long series of them that started with a D100 back in 2003.
I’m in the same exact boat…the little annoyances don’t overshadow all the nice parts and certainly don’t ruin the camera. I’m always wishing X or Y was a little more thought through and then I shrug and grab it to go shoot 😁
I hope Nikon leans into this style of building bodies that really scream, “this is not a disposable toy camera!” An even quirkier choice I would welcome is zero video features and a dedicated B&W sensor. You want retro? We’ll give you a truly retro photography tool that shoots B&W like film could never approach.
BTW the flippy screen perfectly encapsulates why no camera is ever perfect. When flipped around, it’s perfect for the design. Protects the screen and emphasizes the retro look. But when I went to shoot low, I’d much rather have a tilt screen. All choices in design involve compromises. You want a perfect 50mm lens? Try spending over $2000 to own a bazooka that intimidates anyone you point it at. I simultaneously love and hate my 50mm f/1.2. But unlike the Zf, it’s not a piece of equipment I constantly want to pick up.
Too big. Too heavy. Stupid flippy screen. Nikon F fanboy. Hate Z mount. Just give us a photo-only FM please Nikon.
Before the ZF came out, I wished they would make a Df II with ZF type build quality. FM size is dead and gone with Z mount sadly. My FM3a is the perfect size.
I still have the original FM that i bought new in 1978 and love the size of that camera. I also never had a problem with holding it the way everybody is complaining about grips or lack of with some cameras today. It worked great when i bought it and it works great now.
@ the FM is a lot smaller and lighter than the ZF, so the “brick” ergos don’t matter as much.
@@scotttuckerphotography The FM ergonomics far exceed those of the ZF.
@@scotttuckerphotography I own several FM3A and FE bodies in addition to the FM. Never understood the value proposition for Z mount. Bigger, heavier bodies and lenses and also more expensive. No IQ benefit that any client is willing to pay extra $$$ for. Certainly no IQ benefit for posting on social media. Very mysterious indeed.
Excellent! I just got home from a photo shoot around my town and I wish I would have seen this first. Sometimes I come back feeling like all the photos I took are boring or I come back feeling like the place I went to was boring but now I wonder if I just didn't see the cool shots! Thank you!
Yeah this can be tough for sure. Sometimes I go out "texture hunting", meaning I'll just like...pick a single intersection of buildings and look for as many interesting and different textures and colors I can find. Usually in the middle of that I'll see a great normal comp I wouldn't have otherwise.
@@scotttuckerphotography I'm going to try this next time :)
Never get an advice from someone that holds microphone with a spatula LOL! Can I get a like?
You get a like AND a pin!
@ Thank you! 😃 Great video, thinking about getting Zf.
@@zavtravels4546 I'd say you won't regret it, but what do I know, I'm the guy with the micula!
I was just going to flat that🎉🎉🎉
