    Question: if my occlusion is good and I don’t have an overbite but my lower jaw is recessed, am I a candidate for double jaw surgery or will a genioplasty do the job? Because in order to keep the bite the same you have to advance the upper and lower jaws the same amount. However this will still mean that the lower jaw is recessed to the same degree relative to the upper jaw. So how do surgeons fix the skeletal class II without changing the already normal occlusion?

    Thank you for this information, Dr. Steinbacher. I had rhinoplasty in my twenties, twice - the second time to refine the tip a little more, and I had SARPE surgery in the summer of 2022. I then got fixed braces a few months after, which I'm still wearing (as a 60-year-old woman), and I need to get a le forte I osteotomy at the end of this year. I don't want the bottom of my nose to appear wider, so I'll ask my surgeon if she can include the procedure you mentioned to mitigate this. Please could you write the name of it? I'm also a little anxious that my cheekbones will appear flatter, but I doubt my health insurance would include subtle implants (they're paying for all the surgery and orthodontics - I'm in Germany). Is cheekbone flattening common with le forte I osteotomies? Also, I've noticed the gums above my upper incisors have become quite thin since the SARPE. Can orthognathic surgery cause gum recession? More importantly, is there a risk of loss of sight with this type of surgery? Lots of questions!

    I saw a maxillofacial surgeon many years ago, in the 90s when I was a teenager, to have my wisdom teeth removed. I have a very small jaw and was extremely self conscious about my physical appearance. I went to the appointments with my mother. This Dr said I needed surgery to realign my jaw or I would suffer lifelong consequences as an adult. Rather than consider what this Dr said, my mother was extremely offended and immediately dismissed everything he told us. Perhaps he could have been more tactful in his delivery but I don't remember how he said it to be honest as it was many years ago. I'm over 40 now. My mother "helped" me find a surgeon for rhinoplasty shortly after, when I was still a teenager. The surgeon also did a small chin implant and liposuction under the chin. It barely made a noticeable difference and I was still unhappy with my appearance. I had a rhinoplasty revision when I was 21 and was still unhappy with my appearance but decided to just leave well enough alone. None of the surgeons I consulted for rhinoplasty mentioned anything about my obviously undersized jaw. I did have braces as well, when I was younger, before wisdom teeth removal. The orthodontist had me wear head gear to push my upper teeth back for a slight overbite but that did nothing for a receeding jaw. He told me I should work on improving my posture. I have my own young children now and have looked up as much information as I could find so that they have better outcomes than I had. I feel so lucky to have information widely available online which wasn't the case when I was young. I wish I had the jaw surgery that initial Dr recommended but at the time I was young and relied on my parents. My mother told me he was awful for suggesting such a thing and I didn't know better. Thank you for putting information online to help people.

    just had this procedure 2 days ago. i swelled up like a balloon. still am. I highly recommend getting a suction device to suck the saliva out. preferably a battery operated or rechargeable. everything he said is all true but there are some doctors that refuse to do the surgery with Invisalign and refuse to take the wisdom teeth out at the time of surgery. I started the process in TX but had to PCS to WA. my teeth were ready in place for surgery but the doctor wanted traditional braces. that meant paying for braces again and removing my wisdom teeth before surgery. luckily I was able to finish the process back in Texas and didn't have to pay twice for braces

      Could you share what went wrong?

    • @BodyOpt
      @BodyOpt 3 месяца назад

      @@krish33771 Sure, although too many things to list to be honest. I had two surgeries: the first was a SARPE to widen my maxilla. Both the surgeon and orthodontist made idiotic decisions at critical times, so the outcome of that was ruined - I'm sure it caused a secondary micro fracture in the left side of my maxilla during the expansion, and that still affects me every day (shape, mild swelling, and a "pressure" sensation where the crack took place, probably the healed tissue/scar tissue is compressing capillaries at the very least). The second supposedly definitive surgery was the double jaw surgery, repositioning both jaws following aligning teeth. Bad job. No occlusion along my left side at all (still today 4 years on), a cross bite (upper teeth sit INSIDE lower teeth on my right, and the uppers are too far outside the lowers on my left, if you can picture that). My arches are not parallel...so the upper teeth have a visible slant. And although I CAN eat, he has not really left me with class 1, my front teeth sit edge to edge. Going into class 1 jams up my TMJ, most noticeable after waking up and after lifting weights. I wear retainers all the time I am not eating, and 100% need them in the gym! He's irritated the mandibular nerve too much, so my bottom lip has "dysesthesia" (abnormal sensation) and so does my chin. Bizarrely, it actually spread across a part of my top lip this year when I started doing more cardio gym work. I get debilitating spasms in the muscles under the jaw, usually from yawning or grimacing in the gym. He clearly positioned the lower jaw so badly that the muscles cannot really contract normally. I got a second opinion and she CT scanned me (he would not) and said "neither jaw is in the right place"..hallelujah...but she lied in her written report "satisfactory outcome and does not warrant further surgery. If they fuck it up, they'll shift ownership onto you and/or deny there's an issue. Where do you live? What surgery are you considering?

I really think it's the plates near my upper jaw nasal area that's causing all these issues. And yet, my doctor refuses to remove the plates saying it will widen my nose even after alar cinch and there are risks of tissues and muscle damage. I hate my flaring nose. Is it really going to widen my nose if my plates are removed? Thanks.
