Can this Danelectro 12 String deliver the classic Rickenbacker vibe?
Просмотров 11 тыс.2 года назад
Reviewing the Danelectro 12SDC and comparing it with the Rickenbacker 330/12. Let us know what you think! (Note) As a viewer pointed out, this is not a totally solid body guitar. There are hollow cavities but no F holes to make it obviously a semi-hollow body guitar.

    It is definitely not the jangle quality I like. Lately, I acquired a Hagström DLX12 and although it may be more expensive than the Danelectro, it is still more than half the price of a Rickenbacker and definitely has the same Rick jangle quality as the Rick itself. it may not look the same as a Rick, but the vintage esthetics of this Hagström (think the ES335 shape) still can be a very beautiful alternative for a Rick. I can also recommend the Gretsch G5422G-12 Electromatic and the Guild Starfire I-12 as likewise qualitative and affordable.

    It’s a mostly hollow guitar, and Masonite or equivalent as its front and back. I have a 59x12, which has a pair of lipsticks in a sort of humbucker at the bridge which can be split by the volume pot. The neck pickup is a p90, stock, which has a bit of grunge to it. When you use the switch in the middle position you can pair the p90 with either the pair of lipsticks or pull up the pot and pair the p90 with a single lipstick. With all that versatility, I use it in the background of a lot of my home recordings. The front guitar will always be one of the standards, but this becomes my picking, arpeggio or rhythm overdub….

    I just looked it up to make sure I was correct. Dan electro guitars are semi hollow body guitars meaning they have a little piece of plywood to screw the bridge into and then they have even smaller pieces of plywood to screw the pickup in. Hence the rest is hollow body.

  • @darrylpugh6656
    @darrylpugh6656 Год назад

    I have the same guitar. Pardon me a little but if you do some research you will fine that is a hollow guitar inside. That’s why it has the hollow sound. They also used a metal nut up save money but it’s another thing about this guitar they found it actually gives the guitar a better sustain. So there were several things that they did to make this a budget friendly instrument that turned out to make it really a much different wonderful instrument and its own right. I’ve owned three Rickenbacker‘s 360s they were beautiful guitars, but changing strings was a nightmare. I’m getting better sound out of this guitar because I can get that Rickenbacker sound if I want but using both pick ups or just the neck pick up I get a totally different sound much fuller. Anyway, I see this guitar cut in half and it has this press board but it’s not solid. The guitar is hollow. Thank you for your video and comparison I appreciate it..

    Old video but two points to consider ... 1/ The Dean Boca is strung in the conventional 12 string manner. The Rickenbacker is strung differently with the octave pairs of the 1st to 4th strings reversed. This does have an impact on the tone produced by the Rickenbackers. Of course it is possible to to modify the Dean or any other conventional 12 string guitar to be strung like a Rickenbacker ... 2/ The Byrds sound is not solely a function of Jim McGuinn's Rickenbackers. David Crosby's Gretsch Tennesean and Country Gentleman provided the perfect rhythm accompaniment to McGuinn's 12 string.

    Would restringing base/tone strings on the Dano to match the Ric 12s, make it more Ric sounding?

    • @ludwiguy51
      @ludwiguy51 2 года назад

      It might for some players. I personally do not think the order of the strings is that important to the sound of a Ric. I think I read that Tom Petty actually had his strings changed on his Ric to the standard method. I would first try changing the wiring of the PUPs on the Dano. Maybe go with heavier low E, A, D and G strings. Even different amps, pedals or EQ could help. The greatest difference between the Rick and others is the shape and feel- both to the good or bad depending upon the player.

      Boss ge7 ? .....it's the ultimate turn polisher. You can get a humbucker close to a single coil in tone.....or you can easily fatten a single coil to sound like a p90....and close to a humbucker....and pretty much everything in between, Best EQ tip ?......always cut to get the sound you want, and only boost if you have to. I don't see them often on pedalboards, and that's a damn shame. Give me an EQ....reverb and chorus and you can do almost anything, ....best and God Bless..

    These days you can go pick up the Byrds-approved JangleBox pedal, which will turn your Rickenbacker automatically into a compressed, Byrds type sound machine. It will probably help with a non-Rickenbacker electric 12-string, but I'm not sure how much so. It's really designed for Rickenbacker owners, I believe. I think the pedal retails for around $200 or so.

    • @ludwiguy51
      @ludwiguy51 2 года назад

      A friend bought the Jangle box, but returned it. I only had the Dean then. The compression was good, but I didn't get the time to fully check it out.

    • @thiscorrosion900
      @thiscorrosion900 2 года назад

      @@ludwiguy51 I see, but any word on why he returned it? I'm not certain if it will impart the Byrds effect on other 12-strings. I don't own a Ricky, I just have a lowly lefty acoustic=electric 12-string I got about two years ago to replace another low-end one I got eight years ago that I had to throw out, because the bridge warped out eventually. I'm having better luck by far with my new one. I'd love a Rickenbacker 360/12 but I cannot swing the $4000 for one, alas. Nor can I justify the expense. I'm a lefty guitarist which is also a major issue. However, I now own two Vox amps (the VX50 being the best I own), so I can squeeze some jangle out of that! I was told by a local guitar shop dealer that Rickenbacker as a company is the WORST and most pretentious, obnoxious and weird company to deal with. I wish someone could manufacture some 12-strings that at least get close to the sound of a Rickenbacker, without infringing on copyright or TM or whatever. But tough luck, I guess. Is the main Ricky 12 string sound mainly coming out of the pickups, per se, or is it the overall design as well?

    • @ludwiguy51
      @ludwiguy51 2 года назад

      @@thiscorrosion900 I am not sure why he returned the Jangle Box. Maybe he thought he could get the Rick sound or a better sound out of one of his guitars. The mystique of the Rick sound I think is a combination of things. The single coil pickups, the long scale and the semi- hollow body come together nicely, but it is subjective. There is a certain solid feel that appeals to me as well. OTOH there are some annoying factors about the company too. The first used one I held played wonderfully but I missed the opportunity. The second used one I ordered online from GC had a thick clubby neck. The latest models were the same. I had to call the dealers and have them measure for me until I found this 2008 model that felt more comfortable to me. There is no other way to know when the shape changed that I could tell.
