Color Research Makes Better Art
This is a follow-up video to last week's about color research--practical, technical, and historical. This time I share three examples of how color research helped take each artist--myself, Stacey, and Cathy--to new places in our art practice, leading to improvement of skill and an increase of depth.

Thank you! I HATED doing studies of any kind, it was ANXIETY provoking and I felt sick. But slowly, I began to write or journal in my art journal and practice books. I loved the way the images and colors looked with my kind of sloppy writing next to it. Then I began to pay more attention to what I was trying to create and listed the tools, technique, media, measurements, time, what I loved and what I hated( AND WHY). It has made a world of difference. My friends now ask to see my journals, rather than finished pieces. They like the story and the experience of the image. I was so shocked. I have tried to stay the course and keep making notes. What a huge difference this has made in the way I see practice, discovery, and discipline. I can actually call myself an artist without apologizing or justifying. I am swatching color BEFORE I BEGIN TO PAINT!!! This ADHD old woman can learn and grow into an artist. We’ll see where this journey leads, but for the first time I am not as worried about the destination, as I am enjoying the experience along the way. Love you channel!

I'm curious about this monetisation thing. If you choose to not monetise your channel, does youtube still stick ads in your videos anyway and just not pay you for it? If you don't monetise, does youtube "punish" you by not showing your content to as many people, regardless of how many subscribers or views you have? The problem with affiliate links is that you have to get in bed with the likes of Amazon, and that definitely would give me the major icks. Again, no judgement on people who do, but personally I would only ever shop from Amazon as a very, very, very last resort.

I generally like to work across a whole piece at once, like you mentioned, but sometimes it's really fun to work how you have in this piece. It's an approach that can work fine if you are trying to paint a pretty direct interpretation of your reference material. It's also easier to do if you are working in opaque layers. I work largely with transparent acrylic inks and it's all about layering up the colour and what shows through which layer. I've done some really complex work lately and I'm a bit burned out. Working like that is rewarding, but exhausting too. I often like to do paintings like the one you're doing here between those large complex works, just to play, have some fun and perhaps focus on one thing that I feel I need to improve on.

However, I would choose o back off that wall in the photo and simulate a sky in its place? Even in the photo, the background wall is trashing the highlights on the leaves. More wall depicted or change the wall to gray? For some reason it feels confusing. But I get that your objective is showing how to build a leaf study. You could maybe also do a study on how to make turned edges look more real by placing tiny mid-tones on the outside of the hi-lights. It sure makes objects pop.

I have been on the hunt for a nice Potter's Pink (watercolor) in tubes. I have it in a half pan, and the color is lovely lovely lovely, but the poor rewetting holds me back. That's the color I'll explore, and I will have to buy a (some) tube(s) for research purposes, of course.

I’m going to try mixing some versions of Lavender. My daughter asked for lavender socks. My mental image of lavender is a grayish light purple - not one of my favorites. So I am going in search of some lavender flowers to match. I will try mixing some other versions of lavender or light purple before dyeing yarn. Hoping I can capture her image of lavender with samples of my mixtures on paper towels. My dye colors don’t have interesting names, but who knows - maybe I can find some history on the source of dye pigments or lavender plants. Thank you again for a challenge that pushes me in a whole new direction 😂

Prussian Blue Diesbach 1706 Berlin, Was making a red out of cochineal dye, potash and blood when he got the formula wrong and accidentally created this distinct blue. Prussian blue is used in medicine as a sequestering agent for certain toxic metals. (environmental exposure) An adult male can ingest up to 10g of Prussian blue without serious harm. Peris a German pathologist first used it as a histopathology stain to detect iron in biopsy specimens, he named his stain Peris Prussian. Its precise compound identity is very complicated. It is extremely insoluble but also forms a colloid. It has been studied for electrochemical storage since 1978. But it looks like Cobalt has won out on that front. They are mining Cobalt like crazy for the new E car batts. The price of that blue should go through the roof soon. Being the far most used blue for my color mixes, this blue varies maybe more than any other color between paint companies. Some would say that is a bad thing. I rather think it is an excellent thing. They seem to have similar problems as Diesbach with their formulas. I'm excited every time I get a different Prussian blue. Funny that Hooker used it to make his special green. I've never used Hooker green in my life. Ive mixed many different greens using cad yellow, rose matter, prussian blue. substitute yellow ochre for cad yellow whenever. Naples can jump in there also when going light. and don't forget Burnt Sienna when going dark green. I see so many folks struggling with making the correct grays for their clouds. It is mostly because they are trying to use the wrong blue. Prussian blue can make more wonderful grays than any other blue. Stop reaching for that cobalt and ultramarine and play around with this color. You will be surprised!

Ooh, what a fun idea! I (like @SimoneWhippArtist) am behind in your Color Theory series but jumped in on this video. I’m excited to explore Manganese Violet (PV16) in watercolor. I saw a RUclipsr demonstrate its utility in mixes, particularly phthalos. I got a tube of Schmincke & will do some test mixes to see what it can do!
