He looked down to smile at it briefly before he answered his friend, it was a warm reminder of his time back on Earth; before getting roped into this war during his time with Star Fox. Looking back up to the German Shepherd man that just asked him a question, he shrugged his shoulders, simply giving him a grin befitting his wolfish lineage. “Honestly Kyle? I don’t know. Team’s been attached to your Battalion for the past three years now; and the Bugs don’t seem to wanna let the fuck up. But here’s what I do know. You got me, Krys, Fox, shit everybody on the team at your back; and long as we’re here you’re gonna get your ass back home to your folks.” “I know man, I just…this ain’t what I expected of war when I signed up. I thought we’d be fighting the Venomians again an shit dude, not….all of this.” Kaz chuckled sadly at that, leaning up against one of the Landmasters that dotted the improvised smoke pit, and watching as Kyle leaned back against it as well, his arms crossed as he looked off towards where another flight of Peacemakers was heading back into the fight. Kaz couldn’t help but find it funny; their campaign on Katina was swift, decisive. Reminded him of Desert Storm back home, and how his Uncle Dutch was assigned to one of the Marine divisions that helped the Kuwaitis retake their home. Fuck how things change, but somehow stay the same. That’s actually what brought him to show Kyle his playlist of music from that era, as the sun slowly began to rise over the far off horizon. “War’s Hell kid; nobody knows what to expect from it because it can change in an instant, all we can do is roll with the punches and hope to hit the opposition with a knockout blow early.” Kaz knew the dance by now; he was with Star Fox long enough and in the shit long enough that he knew how to deal with war. But Kyle…shit, Shepard was just a kid. Only a few years younger than Kaz sure, but fresh out of high school and already neck deep in blood and regrets. “When will we know when it’s over?” Kaz smiled sadly at that, and reached an arm out to wrap around the younger man’s shoulders. He was like a Big Brother to the kid since they met during Corneria City’s defense against the Aparoid invasion a year ago; and in a way Kaz was proud of how far Kyle came. But he still felt that clawing sadness seeing that flicker of innocence slowly dying in the kid’s eyes. “Wish I could say we’ll know when the time comes Kyle, but thing is…nobody knows. We just gotta stay strong, fight like Hell. Not because we hate what’s in front of us, even if we do. But because we don’t wanna lose what’s behind us.” Kaz’s Ma taught him that, and while Kyle frowned…Kaz could see that helped him, if only somewhat. “S’like Tears for Fears says Kyle, everybody wants to rule the world; might be the Bugs this year, but the next? Probly gonna be some megalomaniac following in Andross’ footsteps or somethin, but no matter what, we’ll be here. Because it’s in our blood to protect those we love. It’ll be hard to get ourselves up and fighting again, we’re sure as shit not gonna wanna…but we gotta. Because we can’t rely on other people to protect what’s precious to us.” Kaz felt for the kid, he really did…but he also knew Kyle needed to stay grounded to reality; it’d keep him stronger than chasing glory like some dumbass butter bars in the CDF would at the drop of a hat. And learning the lesson he had to learn was the first step in that journey; though Kaz did chuckle to himself at his most beloved friends, family and loved ones all fighting in this war too, looking out into the hazy early morning sky of Katina and grinning when he saw a trio of Arwings fly overhead. He recognized Krystal’s immediately by the deep blue stripes down the fuselage, and inside he smiled wider; his eyes fixed on what he would gladly give his life to protect. “But don’t worry kid. It’ll end sometime. Until then? Enjoy the little things. After all, minus all the carnage, Katina’s gorgeous this time of day.” And with that he left Kyle to it, whistling to himself as he prepared to join the others in their daily training exercises since they were kind enough to give him and Kyle an early morning fly-by.
