Episode 6: Nutrition vs fueling, clarifying last week's episode, hot takes on women's Tour de France
Hey everyone! Welcome to our podcast Over the Hill. We’re Joy and Jason and we’re amateur cyclists on our quest to become the best version of ourselves while riding our bike.
We also have a RUclips channel called Joy and Jason Rides, which is a visual recap of our races and events.
Sometimes, we can’t really go in-depth with our experiences in our videos, so hopefully this podcast can fill the gap.
In this episode, I will share my experiences working with a sports nutritionist, we will also discuss how we fuel our endurance rides and rides with intensity, a few clarifications about last week’s episode, and hot takes on the women’s TDF.
Also, a storm was brewing during this episode and we ...

Possibly next year, but we'll have to see what date it takes place...we normally go on vacation in mid-July. We will be doing the Greylock time trial again in September.

    Great video! It was fun to see the race from the front of the group perspective. You made those hills look easy!! I definitely huffed and puffed way more whilst making my way up at a snails pace and I almost wiped out at that same turn on my final lap guarding the rear. 😅 I’m definitely doing that event again next year though.

      Thanks Sveinn. We will see you there next year for sure! It's one of our favorite events because we love the course and it's close to home. Joy will have to defend her title and I will be seeking redemption. I'm glad you stayed upright on that turn! It was a little sketchy and I will be extra careful there next time. P.S. - our secret to making those hills easier is using a mountain bike cassette on our gravel bikes. Less grinding 🙂

    Joy and Jason, good effort from both of you and you should be proud of yourselves. You were both pretty much on target so don't be hard on yourselves. If you're not looking for any feedback, you can disregard the rest of my comments but one thing I noticed is that you both mentioned wanting to have put out a few more watts during your event. Just remember even though it's a hill climb, in the more level and shallower sections of the climbs as well as the short downhills, aerodynamics still play a role. While you didn't show your entire rides, I noticed you never got into a more aero position which can sometimes make more difference than a bike design. In those flatter or downhill sections, getting down with your forearms parallel to the ground is actually more aero than being in the drops and certainly more than sitting up on the hoods like you have to do during the steeper sections. I can't help but think you could have saved a few watts and many seconds by adjusting your position on the bike in certain sections and by continuing to develop power in this position like time trialists do. Just something to consider........

    • @JoyJasonRides
      @JoyJasonRides 3 месяца назад

      Thanks for the feedback! Joy here! There were clips I left out of flatter sections earlier on where I was able to get more aero, but I agree that closer to the top on the rollers I definitely left some marginal gains off the table. I think I was just so over it at that it didn’t occur to me! Definitely still have some room for improvement!

    • @jasonpires82
      @jasonpires82 3 месяца назад

      Thanks Steve, both for the feedback and for watching the video! I agree with what you said about aerodynamics and that was actually one criticism I had of my performance which I forgot to mention in the video. When we did our recon ride a few weeks before the event, I had actually practiced riding the flat section in the middle with wrists on the hoods, but I totally forgot to execute that during the race and I just defaulted to my normal riding position. This may be because I'm still learning to be "comfortable" in the aero position and I've only practiced it doing sub-threshold or Z2 power. I probably could benefit from practicing the aero position when I'm closer to the limit so that I have enough confidence to use it during a race. Had I gone aero on the flat section I probably could have saved a few seconds and reached my goal time. Anyway, thanks for the constructive feedback.

    For some perspective, growing up in the 80's I was a scruffy youngster on a second hand 10 speed from Sears. My buddies and I often raced bikes through the woods, on foot trails and on dirtbike trails with woops ruts and jumps. Occasionally we hit BIG jumps, like full send dirtbike jumps. A few had bmx bikes, but I never got left behind. Presently, I have both a hardtail mtb and a gravel bike. I use them both on the local singletrack trails. Yes, my mtb is more comfortable and a bit faster in the bumpy stuff. BUT, the gravel bike is actually more fun and a bit faster in the climbs. Hats off to you both for going outside of your comfort zone. Keep practicing and you'll find it's much easier. Also, and probably contrary to what your local bike shop is telling you, clipless pedals are a deathwish with this type of riding - you need to be able to put your foot down and catch yourself in a split second when you slip or loose balance. Cycling is a community made up of all types of abilities and experience levels, and you guys are awesome for going for it like this. Ride ON!!
