Lindaraja, Claude Debussy

My goal is to complete one piece every month, so this is what I've got for January! I didn't know this piece very well when I started working on it, I heard it once and was captivated, so I tried orchestrating bits of it, but I fell completely in love with the music after spending some time with it. Enjoy!

This is dedicated to Max, THEIR BIRTHDAY'S TODAYYYYY!!!!!!! This was a super fun piece to write though, there was naturally a TON of variety and opportunities to do interesting things with orchestration and style. You might notice some of it's been arranged - I wanted to have as much fun with this piece as possible so I figured it'd be fine to incorporate other pieces into the mix. I won't say ...

A Minimalist Take on Bach
Просмотров 1632 года назад
So, I've been wanting to do something like this for a long time now, because I absolutely adore Bach's prelude in C major, and I felt it could be interpreted in interesting ways through a minimalistic lens. In Bach's own piece, the rhythmic movement within the chords is 5-3-5-3, so I thought I'd accentuate that here, dancing between both 5/8-3/8 time signatures, and between 5 bar and 3 bar phra...

      @@sageobrien6776 for me seconds are really uncomfortable to play that is my main concern, the thing with the harmonics that sweep up also concerns me a little, although thinking about it that quartet that plays the ferneyhough quartets (artemis quartet i think, theres other ones as well though) might be able to make that work

    Nice job, the one thing I'll say is this ends up going right across the break for clarinet, might be a bit easier transposed up or down a couple steps, other than that feels very fun and mysterious

    • @sageobrien6776
      @sageobrien6776 9 месяцев назад

      It doesn't go over the break - this score is non-transposed, so it would always be just over the break. I tried transposing it up a couple steps and down for steps just for fun though! Up made it sound kinda creepier. Down made it sound like Stravinsky to me

    Great arrangement but be careful with your voicing. Flutes cannot play below a low B natural, and even then, the B is an extended note that some flutes do not have. B flat and below is not possible.

      @@finnsclarinet Me too when I started!! The tempo was hard to get just right, there's so much rubato and I couldn't replicate that on a computer. I mean I kinda did, but mostly what I did is I made the dynamics, colors, and textures interesting in a way the piano by itself can't.

    This is one of your best pieces yet man, I trust you as a clarinet player to know if this is playable or not. I really like how abrupt the transitions are, and how it’s juxtaposed to how flowing the music is. Although that repeat at the beginning is incredibly smooth. Beautiful stuff here man

    • @sageobrien6776
      @sageobrien6776 Год назад

      Yeah I mean it's *playable* just extremely difficult. If it were to be preformed I'd probably just tell the players to improvise around the triplet/quintuplet notes. Thank you so much btw! I'm glad you enjoyed:)

    It's a lot less wordy to label this chord as an A7(b9), the Bb color tone is just an extension of the seventh chord.

    • @sageobrien6776
      @sageobrien6776 2 года назад

      Hmmmm, I mean that's a good point - in terms of utility, Bbdim7maj7 isn't great, but it's more accurate given the voicings. And I mean you _are_ right in that if I were analyzing a piece of music with this chord in it, I'd probably go down a similar route as yourself.
