CHAIR SCHOOL by Shelly Miller Leer

Добавлен 23 июл 2009
Welcome to CHAIR SCHOOL. We've also included TOOL SCHOOL here. I've been making, mixing, fixing, and creating home furnishings since I was five. When the internet took over, I was already eyeball deep in How To content to share.
My mom taught me to sew when I was 8. My dad was a custom home builder, took me to job sites and let me tag along to Handy Hardware. My grandfather owned a lumber yard. It's in my DNA. I'm an author, teacher, videographer, builder, self-examiner, etc. I've been an upholsterer for over 30 years, and taught it for 15. I've written for many large websites as a DIY contributor and expert and wrote a DIY newspaper column for five years. I published my first book on upholstery in 2018.
The real reason I love to MAKE, FLIP, and TEACH is the beneficial effects it has on our creative, emotional, and physical well being. Humans are made to create. It's gotten me through rough patches, and it's just fun. Find me at www.thehomeroomshop.com

As hard as it is, if you're interested in learning how to upholster, it's imperative that you start out small, and then work your way up to larger and/or more detailed pieces. Mastering the slip seat will set you on a firm foundation for your next pieces. It's not always as easy as it looks. This original MCM chair belongs to a local art gallery owner, Christopher West. Upholstering a Round Stool by Mod Home Ec Teacher
Thanks great video
You did such a beautiful job hand-sewing this corner, and as a seamstress I can see the effort involved. The fact that you have 3 more corners to go is almost unbearable to me! But I did learn so much as I am preparing to cover an ottoman with a rug as well. Only I must increase the difficulty level by transforming it into a storage box. My husband is certain I hate myself! 🤒 Thank you for your videos!
What is a regulator
Thank you for this video. I just finished my first upholstery project (a footstool) and the finishing on it looks quite nice now.
Didn't you feel empowered after making it with your own two hands?
this is similar to a baseball stich, which is used on custom steering wheels. Great tutorial
This is great! Thank you for showing how to do these corners and do them well. Is there a link or name of a video that shows how you finish this? Thank you again.
I have some more videos of it. I need to post them.
Cutting the corner begins at 4:48
Thanks a lot ! I love the fabric, where can I find it ? (I live in France)
HI! It's a rug I bought at an import store called World Market.
Where can I purchase the spun Dacron poly filling??
You can get upholsterer's dacron batting from an upholstery supplier. The spun dacron is loose filling like the filling in pillows, only extremely soft. Not all spun poly is the same. This stuff is really silky and soft.
Thanks! The corners of my bench seat looks great, in spite of the fact that I was too nervous to cut the bulk off before rounding the corner.
Video doesn't provide any guidance on how to cover the top with the binding????
Do you mean the fabric covered cording that is stitched between the top and side piece?
why the fuck would anyone want to watch this
Great song choice
Thank you!
Lovely finish, clear tutorial, thank you.
I'm working on more.
Amen, ty for this tutorial. It brought me back to my childhood when I was first taught to sow/stitch? I’m not sure of the proper translation so please forgive me if I go that wrong? I think it was my grandmother who taught me but I could be mistaken? 🤷🏽♀️. I come from El Salvador so almost everyone around us made clothes and did everything themselves 😊
Really would like to see the entire process
Of which? The checkered stool?
Amazing what equipment do I need to make this
You need either an electric or pneumatic stapler. I wouldn't even try it with a manual staple gun. It's too hard to do. You need a sturdy curved needle to stitch it and a good, sharp pair of scissors.
Thx! Helps a lot! 😃
You're welcome!
Thank you so much for teaching this
You are welcome!
Guided by Voices intro.
Me too! Was there another video I missed? Any pics of finished chair? :)
Funny you should mention that. I'm ready to dig back into my videos to find that one. Will post when I find it.
Let us see the finished project. The band ?
I will. I'm starting to go back and find some videos I need to post.
- Very neatly finished. Thanx 4 sharing.
Where can I buy a hot glue gun like yours?
I got that at an upholstery supply company. And guess what? I moved and cannot find it.
After watching 7 other tutorials I finally found your's Shelly - Perfect! You gave excellent instruction. Thank you. I'm glad you walked us through the corners in detail ( that's why I'm here) . I had been really struggling with the corners on my project for a neat (bulk free ) finish and tentative to cut away the bulk. My project is complete and I'm really pleased with the result.
Hi Sharon, I'd love to see your finished product. Thank you so much for posting this.
🇧🇷👍
Laying there
What is daycron is that like Dacron? ;)
It is Dacron!
How much fabric do I need
It depends upon the size of your frame and the thickness of the padding. Do you have a frame?
JP
You are a perfectionist. But ...waited for the start to finish and you spent waaaaay too much time on the corner !
That was the point of this video.
I’d love to see the rest of this.

Where can I buy the stuffing good job by the way
I got mine from walmart for 10 dollars
Where is the next Video?
Yes, I know. I have to get it edited and post it. Sorry.
What does this have to do with a rug?
The rug is used for the fabric upholstery.
@@CFinch360 thinnest. rug. ever.
Not really. It's an area rug from World Market. It was tough to work with.
Thank you vert mutch
big thanks for this good idea that allows a proper finish of the corners !
Qss
Mam, is this your job. I wish I could start something like that down here in Brazil. Congratulations for your cool video.
Your video is great, thank you so much, and I found your voice calm and clear, your instruction excellent. Thank you for taking the time to make and upload this video. :-)
Thank you! I really would love a calm and clear voice. I'm glad you felt that I did. I need to upload the remainder of this project--sewing up the corners. Time is always illusive!! Thanks for watching.
Rustam ali
What happened to the rest ? Another video ? !!!
You taking to long to do the corners , I did one & I took less than 5 min. To do it
I wasn't trying to show how fast I could do it, I was slowly teaching people how to do it. Sometimes, people really need to see the slow and methodical process, not how fast you can do it. Thanks for your comment.
Good for you!!
How was the rest of this ottoman finished? Thanks!
Where is the second part where you hand stitch? I can't seem to find the video
I have that video. I'll post it.
Shelly Miller Leer I cant see or find the final video on this finished product. Help?
This time I'll use woodprix instructions to make it myself :)
Great video! Where can I find the video on how to sew the corners? Thanks!
I would like to see that as well. Video on sewing the corners . would like to see some videos with vinyl also
Looking for that footage in the next couple of weeks.
Very good work I like to learn from you
تسلم ايديك شكرا
Thank you so much, very helpful and precise.
