SV Whitetail
Добавлен 18 дек 2022
SV Whitetail is a Beneteau 423, built in South Carolina in 2003. She was only the 33rd 423 ever made and has a shoal draft, a 2-cabin layout, a Volvo Penta diesel engine and a fully-battened mainsail that drops into a bag atop the boom. Her home-port is Oriental NC.
David & Dan are the second owners of Whitetail and took her to The Abacos and Eleuthera in spring 2023.

I have the H3 Lewmar on my Beneteau 461. I needed to replace in the contactor inside the unit due to corrosion of the spade terminals. You might want to consider a solid stainless steel backer for better support than the fender washers you have installed. Great job on your install!
What a beautiful boat!
@@gwencoleman9439 Thank you! We love her!
Great video!!
What a fantastic trip and video. Thanks for sharing and taking us along with you, so to speak! The sheer size of it all there is hard to take in! As you say, it looked so beautiful from the river, almost surreal? Are you guys going to be doing any touristing? Or have you already been to everything and got the tshirts? How did it feel going through such a famous locale in your *home*? That must have been so wild?! The boat-plane bit seemed quite extraordinary to me. Even in the widest bits of the Themes I can't quite imagine that happening here, I'm sure it would be illegal to try to do that here. Have you seen many of those? Maybe it's just that I've never seen one? It all looks so very clean, don't you think? Compared to what one might imagine? Again, drawing comparisons to touring London, I grew up with a very dirt ridden London, so that's what's in my memory, but if course it's all rather sparkling now in contrast to my memories, and similarly so there, so clean and bright and pretty!
NYC is so cool.
They are going to get some microwaves from the radome next time they wake me up on a Sunday morning.
Up here in Northern Cali...its over 100 already. Wish I was on a yacht. Fair winds to you!
Thank you! High 70's here in Annapolis, today!
Great trip! And we agree 100 percent on the B423.
It was so much fun to have all sail up and engine off, once again!
That boat is fast!
She really gets going! In the winter we want to learn to use the Genneker.
@@svwhitetail I have a cruising spinnaker. I have never used that cruising spinnaker. I know how to use the cruising spinnaker, but I have been too lazy to put it up. It is work. You guys prove that age is only a vague barometer. It is what we make it. Great videos!
The Dismal Swamp is well named and it is haunted!
I've never been through it; we've always taken the Alligator River. I'm worried about overhanging branches fouling our rig.
@@svwhitetail I grew up in Virginia Beach and when in Sea Explorers, we rowed from what is now Town Point in Norfolk to Elizabeth City...I made the trip 3 years..straight down 'the ditch', and we could hear 'things' as we rowed our steady 'stroke' passing the feeder channel to Lake Drummond.
@@jerrycallender7604 What an amazing experience! I hope they still do that, today!
@@svwhitetail That was 60+ years ago...I turned 80 Friday..The trips were highlights of my youth. My brother and I had a Catalina 34 early 1990's and I couldn't get him to go further than 4-5 miles from the marina..
@@jerrycallender7604 I hope young people still have adventures like that one. They're formative experiences.
Tell me it looks the same way on the other side.
We had two trains! We did the 4 PM Bridge and lock then waited until 546 to go under these bridges.
Ugh... That must have been aggravating!
The free docks were all full so we pressed on to Hospital Point. But we have stayed at the dock on the South end of the bridge.
I'm glad you still found a good option!
We saw an actual alligator as we transited the river a few days ago!! he was just hanging out in the shallow water in the sun.
Holy smokes! I've still never seen one in the wild, in the USA.

Oh my goodness y’all are back on the move! We are down in West Palm after about six months in the Bahamas. It was a tough winter with front after front and lots of strong winds. All of our crossings were bleak. We are first going to head up toward New Bern. Is there a do it yourself boat yard up there? I have lots of projects. Afterward we are going to follow you up north. We have already had a lot of strong thunderstorm here. Some with breezes to 35 knots. It seems early for that? Anyway. You guys do an amazing job with your videos and are natural at do it. I look forward to see the videos again and I hope we catch up with you. Franklin
We have used Duck Creek Marine Service in New Bern, Hurricane Boat Yard in Bayboro and McCotters Marina and Boatyard in Washington. All of these are DIY friendly and have people onsite for hire. They all have their niche. Let us know if you need more details!
@@dan6681 Thank you! Did you have a favorite?
Just slight correction: those 12 V to 48 V devices and the other one are active inverters (or inverters) not transformers.
Thanks!!! I’ve been meaning to do this on Zellah, but I didn’t know where to start. 😀
Hello, thank you very much for this very usefull video. I’ve just one question : did you have to put your Starlink router on « Bypass » mode before connecting the new router? I got some issues with my connection, which is exactly the same than yours… Thanks a lot in advance for your answer. Best regards Nicolas
Can you explain why your effort to not use the inverter is better. I would think that the draw on the battery through your setup is the same power draw on the batteries via an inverter. The additional equipment is just adding more equipment for potentially more maintenance/replacement of parts. Also, what camera did you use for your video....looks good.
Because inverters and power supplies don’t work for free. Changing DC to AC equals work. That’s what the inverter does. Changing AC to DC is work. That’s what the power supply does. So if you need 50 W at the dish, you might have to take 100 W out of your battery to get it. That is if you do it inefficiently with an inverter and star link modem/power supply. Maybe the guy on the boat only wants to run his inverter when he has an AC appliance to run. Maybe he’s got a microwave oven, a vacuum cleaner, a water pump, etc. So he will turn on the inverter and heat up his pasta, his coffee, etc. Maybe he’ll have the inverter on for two minutes. Anyway, if you’re running on solar, most of the time, you don’t wanna have to run your inverter for 24 hours a day just to power The stupid Starlink.
Have you used it did it work thanks
I found your video really useful, and in fact have built my own DC setup using mostly the same components you did, the only difference being the router. I have used a GL-iNet GL-X300B router. The snag I have hit is that the WAN port on the router does not seem to see the dish. The dish is live and online, the router recognises a cable being plugged in, but there doesn’t seem to be any comms between the dish and the WAN port. Did you need to do any specific WAN port setup or config(i.e. PPoE, DHCP etc.), or did yours just work?
How has this worked so far for speed and how has the POE held up?
We have had excellent Wi-Fi at the marina we are currently at. So, we have temporarily suspended our Starlink service. As soon as we get things up and running again we’ll update. It seems like the worst case scenario has been that people need to limit the WAN port. So there maybe a bottle neck at that point. Though we haven’t seen speeds from Starlink where that would be an issue.
We fired up the Starlink this week to test the DC Power setup. It’s had no affect on the speed of the connection. In a number of tests we were able to download data at a rate in excess of 100mbps. So, far this seems like a great way to cut back on the devices power consumption.
You are such a stud! So smart. I hope all is well in the Carolina’s? I am down at West Palm waiting to cross. It has been blowing from the north since I left Hidden Harbor three weeks ago and there appears to be no let up. Sheesh. When I came back from Charleston it would not stop blowing from the south. I hope y’all are planning another trip to the Bahamas. If so, I hope to meet up and have you both over for dinner. 😊
I hope this ends up working for you. My experience and several other people's on the internet experience is that the 12V to 48V DC up converter that you are using produces a lot of electrical noise that affects Starlink throughput. However, I believe your PoE injector has much better noise filtering incorporated than the cheaper PoE injectors. Once you are back online you should check internet speed and compare against the Starlink router's performance. For the cheaper PoE injector the noise results in the router negotiating 100 Mbps on the dishy connection. If that's the case performance is usually acceptable but will never exceed 100 Mbps -- which my be fine. If the router cannot down negotiate to 100 Mbps and is stuck at 1 Gbps then with the cheaper PoE injector the system becomes unusable. With your (improved) PoE injector things will likely be better but probably not optimal (but maybe perfectly acceptable to you). I learned all this the hard way as my Starlink barely worked at 1 Mbps after the DC conversions. I substituted a router that can be configured to 100 Mbps link speed and everything worked at reduced throughput but usable. Then my new (Meanwell) power supply arrived and I could use 1 Gbps links speed and performance matched that of using the Starlink router.
Nice how to! I have a 20+ year old horizon express that I'm trying to keep going. I'll definitely use some your tips when I replace mine. Thanks! If you still have your old horizon, I'd be interested in buying some parts from you
Hi, Dan. We might be interested in selling the whole unit, but it is quite heavy. If you can tell me your zip code, I can have a quick look at shipping quotes before we go any further.
@@svwhitetail thanks, we ended replacing our horizon yesterday. I'm now the proud owner of a Quick HC3. Too many problems and guests taking the last month of the season
Really interesting! I wonder how power efficienct this set up will be? I assume those power units are switch mode PSUs? Used near their sweet spot they're commonly up to about 90% ish efficient?
That's what I'm hoping. Maybe I'll do a side-by-side comparison, once the install is done 🙂

I found you! It made me smile. You are an amazing speaker and being a scientist may have been a waste of your extraordinary talents. I enjoyed seeing you both last month and enjoyed our breakfast. Safe travels and keep these wonderful videos coming. They are really good!!!
Thank you, Franklin! I really enjoyed our chat over pastries in GA. After we parted company, did you have any trouble with the weather? We had many storms and it looked as though St Simons had it even worse!
@@svwhitetail Yes! I had 115 of chain out. The holding there is mud and shell. Not great. The next day we had a band come through. The breeze went from 6 mph to 60. All my electronics were off. It was a race between me and a million dollar catamaran to see who would get to the other side as the wind pushed our boats perpendicular to it. He beat me and it took till the next day to get him off the bank. The wind actually flipped his 13 foot center console inflatable. I think I dragged about 500 feet in two minutes. I did not want to hit the other shore so I started my engine and not knowing where my anchor was tried as best I could to keep the bow pointed into the wind. It worked. The rain was coming sideways and I could not see with my glasses on and taking them off just made it worse. When the storm passed I picked up my anchor and went back, but this time I put 215 ft of chain out. The next day and day after the storms brought 50 mph winds. What that wind does to my big fat condominium is violent, but 350 pounds of chain lying in the mud seemed to be the perfect amount. On my sail back to Cumberland I was supposed to have a breeze in the low teens. The breeze went as high as 30 knots on the beam. As you pointed out in the video, the weather did not match the predictions. By the way, going into St Simons I saw 29 knots and as you said, it was choppy. Not big but perfect to throw sheets of water over us. But we did it. I hope you have having a wonderful time. I also hope you tube makes a way for more people to see your videos. They are as good as anything out there…and tell Dan to smile once in a while. 😊
@@CinthyaFranklin I'm very sorry to hear that. As we traveled North from St Simons, the weather was pretty bad. On a couple of different days we had to stop in the middle of the day and find an anchorage because of the storms we could see approaching our location. One evening we had winds of about 40 to 45 knots, but our anchor did not budge. We were monitoring the weather keenly and it was apparent that your location was pretty much the bullseye for many of the worst storms. We were both hoping you'd been able to get out of there already. When we heard over VHF that boats were dragging in front of Frederica Yacht Club, I was thinking of you and hoping that you'd be safe. "350 pounds of chain lying in the mud seemed to be the perfect amount." - yes, that sounds like a very effective solution 🙂 The wind models around that time were all very inaccurate. Day after day we would see conditions in excess of what had been predicted. It seems to be much better, now, or maybe it's just because we are further North. Stay safe, Sir!
@@svwhitetail Mother Nature is a woman. 😬 I survived and no harm. We live and learn but in my 62 years I have never seen thunderstorms like these. I hope you will keep the videos coming. From there we will overnight to Charleston and then we will back track to Beaufort where I will drop off my son. Life should be an adventure. We only get to do this once. No regrets.
Hello! I have enjoyed following your journey. My husband and I live aboard a B423 and are currently in Northwest Creek Marina in New Bern. We plan to make a trip to the Bahamas (our first in this boat) next Fall. I hope you continue making videos! Where is your homeport?
Hi, Gwen. Thank you for the encouragement! Our home port is Oriental, NC, but we're actually coming to Northwest Creek Marina for one month, later this week! It's been good to travel, but a few weeks in one place will also be welcome.
@@svwhitetail You must stop by when you get here, we are in slip F 37, SV Davali. We will be around until Feb 14. We have a car here if you need to run any errands. We would love to hear about your new electronics. Ours are hanging in there but it’s only a matter of time. Safe travels.
@@gwencoleman9439 That would be amazing, thank you! We have a car, but we have to collect it from storage in Oriental. Would be delighted to tell you all about our electrics; the navigational systems and the house systems.
@@svwhitetail Maybe we could give you guys a ride to Oriental? When do you think you will be arriving? The weather has been challenging!
That would be AMAZING, thank you. Plan to arrive tomorrow, but would likely not go get the car until the next day.
Loving all those solar cells! What's the efficiency of them like these days, compared to the theoretical maximum?
Not sure about the efficiency. They are rated at 175W each. I think I have briefly seen 450W out of the three of them, lying flat at a latitude of about 29°N in May.
Pretty! Do you ever get anxious when all you can see sea? Is that something you get used to?
There are certainly things that make us anxious. When the waves start to get bigger, that is intimidating. Although we have sailed out of sight of land, all our journeys to date were concluded before dark. I think it will be a leap when/if we start making multi-day passages.
Wait, what? Was that wheel steering itself?
Yes; we have an autopilot. It can: 1) steer to a specific heading, even when deflected by wind & waves. 2) steer to maintain a constant angle to the wind. 3) follow a pre-programed route along a series of waypoints (eg in a GPX file) The autopilot motor is hidden below decks, meaning that the wheel appears to be haunted 👻. At the moment we are actually trouble shooting the autopilot; another device on our NMEA network is throwing it off and we can't understand how.
@@svwhitetail That sounds annoying!
Those who are not cruisers may think that an Autopilot is a bit of a luxury. However, in an age when most cruising yachts have only two people aboard, an autopilot is an important piece of safety equipment. For one thing, it massively reduces crew fatigue. For another, it enables an injured crewman to be tended by the other.
Beautiful postcard !!! Much appreciated ! BTW- I have very much enjoyed following your progress for months! For those of us who hope to follow in your footsteps- would love it if you mentioned depths as you passed through those cuts, and at anchorages. The after looks so clear, its almost scary!
I'll be happy to mention depths! I will say that I am glad we have the shoal-draft variant of our boat, drawing less than five feet. We have often anchored in less than ten feet and some cuts were under seven feet...
Thank you so much!!! I hope to be in the Bahamas next feb !
You guys sure like your electronic gadgets! With a scope of over 13 to 1 I am pleased it was not a crowded Anchorage. Cheers from Newcastle Australia
The gadgets are great for accelerating processes and adding safe guards, but there's no substitute for our basic human senses 🙂
Regarding scope: check out the spreadsheet at 4m 45s. Accounting for the tide and for the height of the bow roller, our scope was 8:1. Our nearest neighboring vessel was 420 feet away. That little rangefinder is a handy device for ensuring we're not going to be bad neighbors with our scope 🙂
Did you notice our anchor is a SARCA Excel? Made in Melbourne, Australia 🙂 We love that anchor and have been very happy with it. We chose it after seeing the tests that SV Panope put on RUclips.
@@svwhitetail yes, great choice! We can only hope that manufacturing continues to be done in Melbourne and doesn't go overseas like most of our good products. Cheers from Newcastle Australia.
@@svwhitetail sorry, I must've missed something during the video. I thought you said you had anchored in 9 ft of water and had put out 125 ft of chain? In my book that's a bit over 13 ft of chain per 1 ft of depth. With regards to the range finder, I am looking for a good one to use with my mooring contracting business and would be interested to know what make and model you are using. Cheers from Newcastle Australia.
I enjoyed watching your video. Well done. Have a great time in the Bahamas!
