Drawing the female portrait (STEP BY STEP FREE LESSON)
Просмотров 7734 года назад
In this video Chris Gray founder of draw at home takes you step by step through drawing the female portrait using nitram charcoal on Fabriano Ingres paper. You will see how to start and complete the portrait using Draw at homes systematic and logical drawing process.
Again and again I'm returning to this video. I like everything about it: the explanations, how the viewer can follow your drawing because of the graphics on the left side, the simplicity of the technique to get a quite accurate line drawing. I. Just. Love. It.
Many thanks for the support Robert, learning to draw should and CAN be simple. Just like everything else it requires dedication and patience, along side understandable and straight forward tuition.
i feel like you dont get enough recognition, by watching this i've improved a lot in my drawing❤
@robbtheth1rd Many thanks for the kind words, if it helps only a few people then it's all worth it. Stay tuned, more is coming but its better to produce material of real quality rather than mass produce click bait.
Starts at 09:48
Thanks for these tutorials. I have started using charcoal and using nitram charcoal which has a nice warn sepia colour. However when I had to redraw an eye and used a charcoal pencil ( conte a Paris ) it rendered black/grey which clashed with the nitram willow. Have you come across this problem?
Yes that can be an issue, which is why pairing willow and generals pencils work so well as both have a subtle blue/grey hue which can be off set using a warm buff tone paper.
Hi, thanks for the tutorial/demo.
I'm a bit confused about the whole sight-size vs. comparative: If I'm at a certain distance, not close, and if, what I measure can be put 1:1 on (a small format, like e.g. an Ingres drawing) paper, is this still considered 'sight-size'? Because it seems that the sight-size drawing concept uses an easel set up next to the model if I'm not mistaken?
You are more or less right, sight size is simply drawing at the size you see, you can be close or far away the distance dosent matter. Setting up an easel next to the model obviously works if you are drawing a portrait for example but if you are drawing the whole figure? Well you need a full size piece of paper (or canvas). This exercise is actually used in the Russian schools but but not so common in European schools. Instead the easel is moved far enoh back that the figure is contained within the constraints of the paper. I hope this makes sense
@@Drawathome yes it does, I understand it better now, thank you for your explanation.
I know some people who never developed
I home made a pocket carrying plastic measuring tool. Don't ask.
Exactitude is for proportions accuracy. It's not always needed . Use it 40-60, 70-30,25-75,etc,etc
Apply comic artist R. Liefeld figure drawing style to life drawing
Liked your presentation. Will be watching more. Just one comment--Van Gogh is usually considered a post impressionist not an impressionist in every art history textbook I have read.
Many thanks for your reply and yes you are absolutely correct, Van Gogh is considered a post impressionist
Thank you so much for this video! I have been teaching Bargue at the Wethersfield Academy in Connecticut, USA since 2019 for both youth and adult and I can testify on how good of a curriculum this is for learning how to draw. I wrote a simplify version of Bargue drawing for children and I have had amazing responses from children as young as 9 years old. I hope this curriculum will be revived in many academies and ateliers around the world. It is "learning to see" as some artists describe it!
Yes it is truly an amazing learning resource, but one that is often misunderstood as a simple mindless coping exercise. Delve a little deeper and there is a wealth of information and knowledge.
Please feel free to use this video in your lessons, knowledge should be there for all!
The French academic drawings also use conte along with the willow charcoal.
Hi pdpete, they did indeed generals pencils are really just a more controlled version of conte sticks and easier for most beginner students to handle.
@@Drawathome Ah I see, Thank you for clarifying I am excited for the next part in the series
Thank you🙏 i would like to learn the traditional drawing method and hope that there will be tutorial to learn it properly☺️🙏
Part 3 will be out very shortly!
Thank you 🙏 I am looking forward to the other parts ☺️
Not long now Helmut!
Amazing
Many thanks, we are glad you enjoyed it!
I wish there was a place to download these plates from.
Hi Kristoffer, you are in luck the full Charles Bargue course can be downloaded at Archive.org archive.org/details/C.BargueDrawingCourse also high resolution versions can be found here www.flickr.com/photos/martinoconnor/albums/72157629719283605
It's fascinating to watch your visual abstraction method in action. Seeing the subtly of the form emerge from a series of straight lines always amazes me. My biggest mistake is rushing too much and not doing enough checking. This is a great tutorial encapsulating the method. Thanks Chris 👍
Hi Robert, arguably the biggest mistake students make is rushing to get to the end, forgetting it is everything in the middle which is the most important part! Whilst the method of enveloping isnt always easy, it does force you to think through every step. Happy drawing!
I am interested in buying that tutorial ☺️ Is in the tutorial also the plaster cast included? Or an information where i get the plaster cast?
Hi Helmut, The cast is not included but will be available soon to buy, but please do contact us on Draw At Homes website and we will see what we can do!
May i ask how the height adjustable table is called (where you placed the skull). Respectively where can i buy such a table?
Hi Helmut, the model used is the Mabef M36 Sculpture Trestle. This has an adjustable height but also a strong sturdy base. These tall trestles are essential for creating a suitable working environment.
Very interesting! I would like to learn drawing and painting in the traditional way. Like in the Fine Art Academies. The most difficult thing is to get a step by step training. Hope to receive more information on your channel here. Thank you 🙏
Many thanks Helmut, learning the traditional approaches to drawing and painting can be very hard and expensive. We hope that our new courses and lessons will give you the student all the information you need- most importantly in an affordable manner! We will be realising many more videos over the coming months.
@@Drawathome i am looking forward to your Videos. It is not easy to find good and structured tutorials in order to learn like in the academy
What a little gem of a channel I've found myself here - Subscribed! Nice work
Many thanks, we hope you enjoy!
Excellent video
Thanks Lisandro!
hi i hope your website and channel grow, best info on basic drawxing so far
Thanks AMS, its important students know the history of what they are learning.
Thanks for very interesting and informative series of videos. The photos of students packing the studio really brings home the practicality of comparative measurement.
Yes those photographs are a real treasure trove! Really shows how adaptable comparative measurement really is compared to other techniques.
Good stuff!
Too kind Joni!
