Panhandling Coyote
I have driven this stretch of highway countless times over the years and have seen this behavior a few times now. Over a long stretch of years. So not sure if it's from repeated feeding, and/or learned and passed on. I stopped for what I expected to be a brief photo/video op. But this coyote was clearly not behaving like most in this situation. Usually sprinting off. It was following any passer by as I sat there. And kept returning. On this occasion I didnt see anyone feed it. But the very first time I had seen this behavior was about 25 years prior on this same stretch of road. And it was a wolf at the drivers side window of a car that had stopped in front of me. They tossed it something...

    My 2011 800s clicks at least once if not twice before it starts. Sounds like I'm going to need a new starter also. Luckily I've already got it torn apart changing other parts for routine maintenance.

    • @ericinalaska7648
      @ericinalaska7648 16 дней назад

      The starter is a possibility. But before running out and buying or ordering one. I would first test the battery. If your battery is weak and struggles to crank the starter. You'll experience what you described. But your instinct about the starter, if there is no issue with the battery, is good I'd say.

    I just got one of these so I am very thankful for your video. I am torn on the break in oil. It appears to be a straight SAE 30 but the manual says not to use straight 30 below 32 deg. It is cold here in Maine so I am concerned about that. Did you do your break in period in warm weather?

    • @ericinalaska7648
      @ericinalaska7648 24 дня назад

      I think it was definitely above 32 degrees. I would say if your generator is stored say in the garage or a place where the oil isn't getting that cold before taking it out to cooler temps and running it you'd be good. But if it's below that where you store it, and starting it with the oil colder. Id avoid it if you can. Especially since they noted it in the manual. Im sure a lot of people do it, and dont read the manual, and there off and running with no immediate issues but why cause more ware and tare if you dont need to. Just wait for a warmer day if you have the luxury.

    Hey, guys. Please DO NOT use an impact wrench. The name ''impact'' tells you why it''s not a good idea. The sudden impact can and does now and then shear off the flywheel key which kills the spark timing. Since these things aren't usually all that tight in the first place it's much less risky to just block the movement of the piston. Especially when tightening it back.

    If you own one of these and are having problems starting your XT8500EFI HERE IS A TIP. 1st your generator is a EFI so your battery must be fully charged or at least 12.5VDC if it does and you still have problems take one side of a set of jumper cables I used black side connect one end of the cable to the negative side of your battery and clamp the other end to motor not the chassis but the motor and it should start right up.

    • @ericinalaska7648
      @ericinalaska7648 Месяц назад

      Yes, the charge of the battery on these can certainly be finicky. If I have any issues. It's typically as it gets colder in the fall, and if I dont use it for a few days. I can usually pull start it but the battery that came with it had a short lifespan. Who knows how old it was before being put together with the generator and then how long it sat in a warehouse and delivery and until sold. And it would give me a bit of grief. The replacement has served me well. Battery maintenance is key but if that slips it's always good to have a plan "B" in your pocket. Thanks for the info and tip!

      I have one of those as well. Smaller, but been going for many years. 15 to 16 years I believe. With lots and lots of use. While I will say Honda would be my first choice. I have not been disappointed with this Generac as of yet. I bought it at Costco and they have a pretty good return policy there in the event it disappointed. Ive had it going on I believe 4 maybe 5 years now. For the size and price compared to a similar Honda. Im willing to give it a go. I actually have a Honda, a Yamaha, This Generac, and of course the built in Onin in the motorhome. The Onin is the only one to give me grief so far all these years. They seem to be problematic. So when in need I just plug into the Generac. If I need that much Amperage. Or one of the others for lesser needs. Anyway, thanks for the input. All opinions are helpful to viewers.

It was more like a dog begging at the table, just following and going up to vehicles vs. foaming at the mouth and acting confused or aggressive. And it's the third time on this same stretch of road over 24 years Ive seen it. And I did actually see someone feed one on the first occasion. That was actually a wolf back in 2000. And then just in the last 3-5 years twice in the same area. Coyote. I just think there habituated. And see and use the road as a potential food source. Im not an expert by any means. Just my instinct. Maybe locals, maybe tourists passing through, maybe both.

    What is the carbon canister? Does the fuel line from the gas tank run down to the fuel canister?

    • @ericinalaska7648
      @ericinalaska7648 2 месяца назад

      A carbon canister on a generator is filled with activated carbon that captures and stores fuel vapors that would otherwise be released into the atmosphere. Essentially it's part of the emission control system. By absorbing these vapors and then releasing them back into the engine to be burned during combustion, reducing harmful emissions. It's connected to the fuel tank by a vent line. So it's not a fuel line but may appear to be because it comes directly from the tank, typically. Hope that helps.

    Thank you for the great maintenance video. Very clear and informative. One helpful tip for anyone who buys new: Change the oil immediately after running it for its first 1/2 hour, and after its first 3-4 hours. You’ll see a ton of metal flakes in these first few oil changes. This will ensure a long life and easy starts for your generator for years to come.

    • @ericinalaska7648
      @ericinalaska7648 2 месяца назад

      Thanks for the info. I can't say I did that. But I do believe there cant be too much when it comes to oil changes. Especially during the break in period. Growing up I always had others chime in on how frequently I'd change my oil. Saying they'd gladly use my old oil for there oil change, and commonly quote how many years its been or that they never and look how many miles my car has on it etc...... Proper lubrication gives your set up its best chance at longevity. And as you pointed out. Removing any particulates, metal, or other that may occur from the break in and normal ware and tare, can only have a positive out come. Yes it cost money. But likely not as much as a replacement and the convenience of it working and being available when you need it. Especially for those that only pull it out in a pinch. Is priceless. Thanks again.

      Yah I was pretty excited when that thing lit up again and my front wheels spun. I will say, that as best I tried. The seal is a bit compromised. Always a bit of moisture inside the lens. Not sure if that will lead to its demise again or not. I know when I was looking into options. I recall seeing them as you mentioned for around $400-$450. But was unaware they were limited to 2x4? And not 4x4. Hmmm. So weird that these things aren't available as after market but it is a 25 yr old machine. And as often as these things seemed to fail. I guess any back inventory has just about beed deleted. Just make sure if you do decide to open it up. That any other functions that are critical or even just important to you, won't be lost if you end up without it all together. But .... you could always just remove it. And gently shake or roll it to see if you hear that same part rattling around in there and decide from there.

Today I'll take rocker cover off to chech the magnetic contacts under there. seems like it is getting a little fuel to start momentarily but something not allowing idle or revving. ??solenoid.

      @@geoffkervarec6930 Im not familiar with the 455 diesel. But if it's a fuel issue. There are only a few things it can be. If it runs for a bit and then seems to starve for fuel and die. My first thought and cheapest first check and replacement is a fuel filter. Im grasping at straws based on the limited info. But perhaps some crud or sediment got knocked loose in the limb fall, and plugged up the filter? Look in the tank with a flash light and make sure there isn't anything blocking your fuel supply. Then you have fuel pump and if applicable fuel injection. I recently replaced an ignition coil and a cdi box because it would run for a while. Ride for 5-10 minutes. Then run really rough. Back fire and stall. Id need to experience what's happening with yours and hear it run etc to really have an idea. I hate to guess and send you down the wrong path.

      @@ericinalaska7648 Hi Eric. The fact that it will run then shut down immediatel and run (albeit cyclin / rough) on full throttle has been very puzzlin. Its beel leading me think it can't be fuel, otherwise it would just crank over without firing, which led me to think electrical. With that in mind, today, I went over it all again and I'm happ (and emarrassed) to tell you thit I finall found the culprit. The engine cut-out switch (that I didnt believe was still connected) was damaged in the branch fall and had disabled the engine. I had stripped all the plastics off, pressure cleaned everything, serviced it and even changed the drive belt. Its running nicely and will look a million dollars again when I finish reassembly tomorrow. Some real positive outcomes, so I'm very happy to have sorted it out. Thanks so much for your thoughts and input on it. I hope you have sorted your machine out too. Kind regars, Geoff

    When you buy this generator after hooking the battery up do you need to hook up and more connections for the battery start to work because I done had the charger plugged in all day and it still isn’t charged

    • @ericinalaska7648
      @ericinalaska7648 3 месяца назад

      As far as anything that would relate to it starting. Just oil, battery and key as far as I know. If it's just dead and you've checked your battery connections and there is just nothing. My instinct would be the battery needs replacing. Who knows how long these batteries sat on a shelf before being packaged with a generator to be sold and then how long it sat before being sold. The instructions indicate, needs a full charge before using. Mine didnt hold a charge very well and I replaced it. The new one has performed well with keeping it charged of course. Did you use the charger that comes with the generator or an automotive type charger? With the proper battery size settings. I prefer to remove the battery and use a charger that indicates what it has drained to. Showing me the voltage right when I hook up. And also indicates the charging status or if there is none. That charger that comes with I believe is a sort of trickle charger and you have no way of knowing if it's doing anything. It doesn't even have an indicator light to let you know it has power when you plug it in. At least mine doesn't. So you dont know if the battery is completely dead or if its trickling slowly, or trying and trying but getting nowhere or just needs more time. If you dont have another charger. You could take the battery to say a batteries plus and they could test it for you. I suggest them mainly because there one of the few places likely to have that particular battery. Hope that helps.

    Can you do a video on how to drain the fuel from the generator with EFI. I have the exact same generator. I love it.

    • @ericinalaska7648
      @ericinalaska7648 3 месяца назад

      I can. But that generator is tucked away at the moment. Do you have some bad fuel, or? You'd just need find the fuel line and disconnect it and allow it to drain into something. Once it starts open the fuel cap. That'll speed it up. If you're not familiar with that. There will likely be one line/hose coming out of the bottom or low spot on the tank. Then follow it to where it connects from there. You could just disconnect it at the tank but it's get messy if your not ready with something for it to spill into. I'd were gloves etc. If you remove the other connection it allows you to pinch off the line and maneuver it to reach a pan of some sort to drain into. Or remove the tank if you want to go that far. Sometimes that's not that complicated. A few nuts or bolts holding them on and again disconnect the fuel line. Then you can just handle the tank in anyway you like. Turn it upside down etc. Pour fresh fuel in and swirl it around and drain it again if you like. Then put it back on and you should be ready to go. Hope that helps.

Some folks are more comfortable having there work done at a dealer/shop for that reason then they dont have to worry. Just sharing a thought for those that may like to avoid any headaches. Eric, if you are located in or around Fairbanks I think you own the same Polaris 4 wheeler that I bought there in the spring of 2010. I sold it when I was moving to Ft. Benning at the end of May 2013. A June 2013 oil change lines up with the correct time frame. Several things like the headlight case green / black plastic doesn't lock closed, and several physical features I remember looks the same. That was the best 4 wheeler I have ever owned! My friends called it the old tow truck. I pulled several of them with very new 4 wheelers out of the deep woods. If this is the same 4 wheeler, I'm so glad to see it's still being Very well taken care of😁.

      I actually bought it from a guy in Paxson. He indicated he had it for a long while. It was missing a pull start handle/rope. And had duct tape over the hole. The AWD didnt work. I believe he did zero maintenance on it. And stored it outdoors or semi covered. But these have a good rep as you mentioned so I was able to get it at a reasonable enough price to bring it back. Its lived up to its rep since. I have had to do a few more things to it but all stuff that you'd potentially have to do to just about anything that old. Stator, CDI, Ignition coil. But currently operational. I dont know if your still in GA but the heat should be letting up about now I suspect.
