Can I ask how you prevent the masking tape from tearing the top layer from your paper?
I did this and it peeled a bit omg 😢
So you can't pull off the tape? Does it rip the paper?
Very clear explanation, thanks. You mention the paper is 'face down', but surely that's just for wetting the back of the paper. When your doing the final wetting, you must turn the paper over?
Advice for how to get into a gallery? Sadly I feel like it’s a “who you know” situation. But what is the process typically/traditionally? 🤔
oh too late, I did my masonite, the paper when it dried dragged the masonite to concave. 😂
Oh no, I'm sorry to hear that! I've seen this happen before -- masonite drawing boards are definitely not stiff enough, sorry!
Like another commenter mentioned, wish I saw your video before I bought a traditional cool/warm set XD
Well, now you have a lot of color combinations to try -- enjoy! 🙂
I noticed you use the same sponge to wet the paper as you use to activate the tape. Do you find there is any glue transfer to the paper with subsequent uses? Do you clean the sponge?
Yes, it's the same sponge, and yes, I rinse and squeeze it out many times to remove any glue residue. I should have mentioned that in the video, but thanks for bringing it up!
I have interpreted the theme of two of those paintings as “things that I know shouldn’t been happening but I’m probably not going to do anything about”
that’s so awesome congratulations!!!!
Thank you, @@samanthapiekarski04!
❤
looks absolutely beautiful so far!! can’t wait to see it done :)

Really beautiful result ❤
Yet another wonderfully dense video full of useful tips and observations! Thanks so much for taking the time to upload these, they're super helpful.
Thank you so much for uploading this! This is exactly the kind of technical problem solving with watercolor I've been looking for. The detailed play by play really helps. You're a wonderful teacher :>
I just got mine, it’s hard for me to get the wrap off of the 1/2 pans, and everything is in I think chinese, I’m frustrated right now! I just want get the paint wet and see how I like these colors!
Stunning as always!
Thank you,@@terijean6351!
You remind me of one of my all time favorite teachers, he was my chemistry teacher who has a very similar voice and personality. Thank you for being such an inspiration to others like he did to me! ❤
So nice!!! Looks amazing!! ❤️❤️ new sub added, keep it up 🔥👍👍
Thank you,@@Anes.34!
Very well done! For landscape paintings, I may add a couple of earth tones from the following: yellow ochre, raw umber, burnt umber, burnt sienna. With the blues in your palette, you can make an infinite number of browns. Thanks.
Thank you, and yes, definitely add whatever other pigments meet your needs!
Can we peel the brown gum tape off the drawing? To give a white border. Considering i do not want to make my A4 painting any smaller.
I have found the brown kraft tape does not peel off the watercolor paper without leaving a residue. Even if you soak the edges to remove it, there may be some of the adhesive remaining that could yellow over the years, so I think it's best to cut it off. Maybe a larger paper size would be the solution for you...?
I was not prepared for the reveal, GORGEOUS!!
Thank you so much! 😌
My jaw dropped. It looks amazing!
Thank you so much!
Please keep the videos coming. They’re very much appreciated.
Thanks so much for your interest. I'll try to share more watercolor stories on a regular (-ish) basis 🙂
Incredible and very inspirational work. Thank you so much for sharing. Keep 'em coming!
Thank you for the positive feedback! 😌
I'm in awe♡
Thank you!
Your aquarium is growing beautifully. May your pets live long and prosper.
Ha ha thank you so much!
Very grateful that you are sharing these videos. The technique and effort cannot be inferred when we see the final painting, these videos are precious! Thank you.
Thank you so much for your interest and for the great feedback!
Thanks for explaining things the water and paper do with the paint. Watercolor is like magic to me. Magic that I don't understand or am able to use except at the most basic level! :)
I think experience is the best teacher, so I hope you will stick with it and that it will start to seem less magical and more manageable as time goes on! 🙂
How much did it stretch??
I've never measured the size difference between wet and dry paper, but I know it's enough to keep the dry paper tight as a drum head after stretching 🙂
@@watercolorish thanks
Thank you for sharing your palette !! I had already bought my first set of 24 colors, and got overwhelmed. But now I know which colors to set up a limited palette and start experimenting 😊
I hope you find my limited palette more manageable! I tried it as an experiment many years ago and never needed to add more colors 🙂
Cant wait to see the end results!
Thank you! I've run into some complications, but hopefully it will be finished soon (-ish?) 😅
@@watercolorish I hope you overcome those complications and complete your amazing art! :)
Thank you, @@haruthepotatoe!
Stunning!
Thank you so much!
This is lots of labor :-)) I have been using a system that I thought and implemented long ago. I "painted" a 1/2" thick plywood board (so that it doesn't absorb water) a little larger then the watercolor paper. I wet the paper, and position it properly on this board. Then I place four 1/4" thick, 1.5-2" wide "painted" sticks along four edges of the paper. Then I use large clips that you normally see on board clips to clamp everything together in a manner that the paper is sandwiched between the thin sticks and the board. And I let everything dry. When I remove the paper, I don't have to deal with gummed tapes, or cut out staple holes, or anything else. Try to implement one. It is easy and effective.
Sounds brilliant... thanks for the suggestion!
@@watercolorish I also implemented the magnet version of this. This time you have a 1/4" glass background where you glue your magnets that align the edges of the watercolor paper. Then place your wet watercolor paper on top of the glass. On top of your paper place a strip of thin paper along the four edges of the watercolor paper. Then place another set of magnets that face the first set under the glass platform. The thin paper strips may be necessary in case the magnet stains the watercolor paper. You may replace the paper strip with thin wood strips if you have stronger magnets. Anyhow, this method works okay too as long as you use "strong" Niobium magnets. Give a try! Good luck!
Thank you, @@windsurfingphd!
I'm new to watercolor but i am doing it for a friend. I'mnormally an oil painter and i find watercolor to be daunting. My first buckled so much! and inconsistently. What she wants is a huge piece, 30x40, and I'm wondering what wooden board I may use to stretch? A lot of wood is kind of warpy. Or if there is another cheaper alternative for something of that size?
That's a big watercolor! If you're stretching the paper, I think a large 3/4"-thick sheet of plywood would be your best bet to avoid warping. But this might be a case where working on unstretched 300-lb. paper would make more sense, and hopefully it won't buckle much
@@watercolorish thank you for your reply! I’ll give it a try.
Bravo
Thank you!
Congrats

That was really helpful. Thank you.
Thank you for your interest!
Love your work, so meticulous and patient. I’m curious roughly how much time you spend on your paintings.
Lately (since the injury to my drawing hand), they've been taking a LONG time... 3 - 4 months for a piece this size
Love your art, man! Have you ever tried Schmincke masking fluid? It's different than other masking fluids I have tried. First off, it doesn't smell. It is also easy to clean from brushes. Can be mixed with water to make it more accurate when using it. I am not sure about shelf life, as I haven't used it for a very long time.
I don't think I've tried that brand, but I'll look for it, thanks!
very beautiful as always :)
Thank you so much!
I am very confused but it is cool
