Houston Using ONLY Public Transit

Houston is NOT a city known for it's public transportation, but on today's episode, we put it to the test. We spent an entire day crisscrossing the city on trains, buses, a BRT line, and on foot to see what it would be like to live in, or visit Houston without a car. While we were mostly successful, there are plenty of lessons to be learned. What did you think of this episode? Are you from Hous...

What Will Congestion Pricing Mean For New York City?
Very happy to see Austin making transit strides. But I do wish that plans included through-running of the Red/Green Line onto the UP Austin Sub. Would still be a capital-intensive project to connect Downtown station and add new tracks despite it being railroad ROW. However, it would connect to Amtrak, serve dense-ish areas in old west Austin and Zilker, as well as allow S-Bahn style services south to Kyle/San Marcos and North to Round Rock/Hutto/Taylor. At a bare minimum, the red line at least needs a branch to Round Rock/Hutto/Taylor at the junction near Howard station, which would not be capital-intensive at all.
I could see some of this happening in the future. But as far as priorities go, 2 trains a day on Amtrak isn't worth building out a ton of infrastructure to at the moment. If real plans come in for that to change with Amtrak, Brightline, something else, etc.... there will have been some sort of political shift which would hypothetically make that sort of project (extending the red/green line to Amtrak) feasible. Thanks for watching! More on this in part 2! -Louis
Seems like Yellowjacket will be pretty useful, 71 coming from the East and 183 from the south are the two major highways that don't currently have a good park and ride.
Agreed! Skeptical of some of the other park and rides (38th, Oltorf), but this one seems to be in the right spot and I can see people using it.
This looks amazing
I feel bad for Austin. It literally is trying to do something as the State of Texas seeks to sink and destroy everything they are trying to do. It wouldn't surprise me if Texas outright bans light rail just to stop Austin
Many in the state legislature would if they could! We talk about some of that in part II to this episode. Cautious optimism there at the moment. Thanks for watching.
“We’re going to talk about your light rail network” *cuts to the streetcar*
This is the summary of the report I've been looking, for thank you guys a million, I would argue this is actually quite good journalism. my ears on the credits song tho.. Regardless fantastic vid, i look forward to the rest
Thanks so much! A lot more to come in part 2! Appreciate the kind words 🙌
I would argue both lines could cross the river at the existing bridge
You certainly could, but the traffic crossing S 1st and S Congress would either slow down trains, or make vehicle traffic a ton worse. I'm glad that that is not currently being considered anymore. Worth pointing out though! Thanks for watching!
it seems like it is a good design for the initial expansion of this system. the most important thing is dedicated right of ways so that traffic does not affect rail service. as austin continues to grow, so too will its transportation needs and thus the rail system will continue to grow. One concern at this stage is construction delays due to lack of labor as there are so many large commercial and capitol projects that are being built at the same time. There are still numerous high rise projects that are in the pipeline and funded for instance. Keep us posted.
Not on Carmel's level, but Bend, OR is also investing in a lot of round-abouts. Currently the city has about 50.
These are great! I’m trying to find info on the Green Line in Austin. Have you done any dedicated videos or deep dives into the Green Line?
We haven't really done a deep dive on the green line, but in events and statements from CapMetro/ATP, it sounds like the Green Line will come after phase 1 of the light rail at some point. They already own the tracks, and some development is underway, but it will be a while. Personally I think it would be cool to see even a short version open sooner, just stopping at Plaza Saltillo, Springdale (a ton of development happening here) and 183. Later can extend further up towards Manor with a lot of development plans in between. -Louis
I am going to start calling it the "green" line. Technically it's the "1" line, but when the computer voice says, "This is the 1 line", I always respond, "thanks for reminding me that we only have one line!"
Thank you for the great video! Let's hope all these projects work out! 🌞
Nice run down!
Man, It's still kinda disconnected from the Amtrak station :/. The convention center stop is just around the corner from the red line, so that's not too bad. But intercity connectivity in central Texas is still really bad :C
For now not holding my breath on increased service at the Amtrak station, as much as I'd love to see it. 2 trains a day isn't enough to make sense to connect there for now. In the future there would totally be potential to extend the red line through downtown and make the connection that way, but I fear that is a long ways off...
Something I think is super cool that was kinda mentioned. The floating bridge rail connection - is the first and only of its kind in the whole world!
Please come out and visit! A lot of great fellow urbanists here!
It would be great to here how aleshire is trying to take down transit. I have seen that he is suing but its confusing
More transit = Less car traffic! why would anyone be against this? Being anti-trust means you want MORE traffic. I hope Austin completes this.
We hope so too!
Every strip mall along the light rail route should be redeveloped into a pedestrian and transit friendly small shopping area with offices and apartments over the shops
Tons of plans for that in Austin!
This was really helpful! My eyes were glazing over trying to read the document.
The Bellevue isnt really useful at the moment but it will get better once the lake washington line opens. Edit: also the reason that the lake washington section isnt open yet is because the concrete mix used for the track support were the wrong composition. Apparently the engineers didnt factor in all the forces that were going to be put.on them from the lake. In all fairness to them this is the first time this is being done this way. It still sucks and shouldnt have been missed.
if you build it, they will come

I think for April 1, you could release a video, saying that the city of Austin just announced a proposal to the Trump administration to build a monorail. And, they even wrote a song.
Call it the Trumprail! 😁
Take down parking lots, and put up paradise.
Yess!
I like the idea of Guadalupe being the 'spine' of the system - it's been begging to be made transit-only ever since they launched the RapidBus way back when. I still think that the section through downtown should have been a cut & cover tunnel, it's a shame that got cut. Makes me a little worried about OTP but hopefully the signal priority is actually worked into every step of the process. So far this whole network is really looking a LOT like Portland's MAX system.
The downtown tunnel would have been amazing. I also worry about the signal priority- but hope they are able to pull it off. Thanks for watching.
That means a tunnel would have to be built at a future date especially if signal priority doesn't work out. A tunnel for the main trunk line would have made the light rail system into a semimetro. Still it's a big let down on what the consultants promised the politicians who then promised the public: a major subway metrorail system.
Public transit projects mean responsible development. Hopefully, it means responsible development.
🌴🌞🌴🌞🚉🚉🚉🌞🌴🌞🌴 Any strange transit alignments? *Who owns the land?* Is it buried within the 16,000 pages, or can third party researchers find the ownership links? Find that and you'll find out who's pulling strings...
They included the IHOP in the project for the tallest building in Texas, just for "The little people." If you don't have public support for a project like that, the public can shut it down very quicky.
I don't know if you guys have seen Metro Map Maker, but it's a web based way to design your own map or remix another map. There are a ton of Austin "fantasy" maps that are really cool and look as if they were real maps. I have been playing with Atlanta maps. You should take a look at it. There are maps of just about every city. I've been having a ball playing with it (its free)
It's been a while, but it would be fun to make some Austin maps with it! Thanks for watching 🙌
Why do yous keep on pushing the transit agenda in Texas? Leave red states alone this will harm our communities. Push it in progressive bastions in NM, CA, MA etc.
We live in Austin. People who live here are pushing for transit in general. Project Connect was put up for a vote and it was not even close. Passed by a huge margin. Conservative Texas should believe in local control and not get in the way of the will of the voters who overwhelming want better public transit in the city. Thanks for watching. -Louis
I would def elevate It over i35 because that's gonna be a nightmare lmao
I think North of the Pleasant Valley location is also noted as potential "Ballpark" spot
Thanks for uploading this! Absolutely LOVE the 3D layout you put on the stations I'm planning to make a video of this with drone shots when it gets warmer and make some vertical content
Drone stuff would be amazing of some of these areas! Are you Austin based? If so, reach out! Happy to work together on some related stuff if you are interested! -Louis
@@TransitTangents Yeah, I'm Austin based! I'll give you guys a follow on IG
Happy for y’all! Ik y’all have been looking forward to seeing Project Connect for a long time!
Thankyou! Still a long way to go, but happy to see some tangible forward progress.
In Europe the trains are ripping past the fossil fuel cars!
Mass transit is key to the survival of cities as the fossil fuel car culture expands. At some point there will be grid locks so bad that people will be outside their cars meeting their car neighbors and waiting for the never ending line of pollution machines to start moving.
I live on the Lynnwood extension in Mountlake Terrace. I bought my second home literally around the corner from the incomming rail station eight years ago. I'm right on the county line from King to Snohommish, it is very suburban here but this is where people live. There are more projects to build apartments and high-density living, in fact they've re-zoned my block for eight story development.
You guys should be asking DFW folks how to build transit...not sure how they have an extensive tram/train network that rivals southern Californian metro, but it was nice as a visitor (even if DFW has terrible ridership).
very professional production and editing. cool channel. very interesting
Thanks for watching! A TON planned for this year. We hope you'll stick around. -Louis
On the East side no one gives a damn about this.
IF YOU HAVE KIDS AND NEED TO DRIVE CARS WHAT ARE THEY DOING ABOUT THAT?? BOTHEL 2 LANE SQUEZZE SUCKS!!!!!!
Just some more context for the 2 line: It was originally intended to open with the connection to Seattle as part of it, but the section going over the floating bridge had a lot of delays. As far as I am aware, this is the first time anyone anywhere has built rail on a floating bridge. But because there were already a lot of plans for additional extensions in the future an additional maintenance facility was also built on the east side. Thanks to this facility they were able to open the line they did as it could operate independently instead of waiting even longer for the portion over the bridge to be finished. There are some questions about how useful this line really is without the connection to Seattle but this is ultimately a stopgap measure.
Doesn't extend far enough north yet for me to use it but the traffic at peak hours is horrendous so I'm definitely looking forward to being able to hop a train instead of sit in traffic when it extends far enough. Even riding the bus is already more convenient for me than a car for work. It also definitely beats having to rent a car for people who don't own one.
Following the right of way makes for easy land reclamation in Washington State anyway. I live within a mile of a new lite rail station and my my wife will be able to commute to Bellevue from Kent. Across the I-90 bridge, part of the Bellevue to Redmond extension.
The Seattle rail is an absolute joke! Instead inspiring themselves from Vancouver across the border on how to do public transit (hint, Skytrain) they built this abomination. You got train cars with interior steps. You also have to pay a driver for each train. You have pay, healthcare and pensions because of that. All because of a couple miles of track in the Colombia area that a surface level line. Vancouver has had all it's trains automated since inception from the 1980s. Absolute waste of taxpayer money!
We should have gotten the monorail from SeaTac to Paine field, West Seattle to transit center. The new system is not well designed, more intended to block car traffic than improve transportation. Have
The opening of the extension to Federal Way was delayed because they discovered a section of land around 277th street was unstable and they had to reinforce it. “The Federal Way Link Extension is expected to open in spring 2026. The extension is a 7.8-mile light rail extension that runs from Sea-Tac Airport to Federal Way. Explanation The project was approved in 2008, but construction began in 2020. The opening date was originally scheduled for 2024, but was delayed due to unexpected soil conditions. The extension includes three new stations: Star Lake, Federal Way Downtown, and a station south of South 259th Place. The Federal Way Downtown Station will have a new bus loop to make it easy to transfer between the light rail and local and regional bus services. The extension will add nearly eight miles to the 1 Line. The final segment of the line, from Federal Way to the Tacoma Dome, is not expected to open until 2035.”
No, it can't. But it's still worth trying. Even that makes Austin better.
It's super cool to see these extensions. We use them all the time. I just wish the sounder (train not light rail ) also ran for longer trips between Tacoma and Seattle and all is stops along the way because for some reason it is closed on weekends/ has different times than normal or only runs on special events on the weekend. Its great to have the train for commute to Seattle, its great to have light rail to get all throughout Seattle. Why the light rail international station and sounder King Street station arent 1 baffles me. They're right across the street essentially and locals can navigate it easy. Tourists not so much. It nakes sense to have your faster ling distance travel connect eith your lighter shorter rail. That and the train schedule on weekends are really my only question marks with Sount transits plan at the moment but the expansions are super cool!
