    When I was much younger my friend taught me how to dive. We had a boat in Narragansett Bay, RI and dove for quahogs. In the winter it was brutal and hands got so cold you'd have to put them in a pot of hot water to get any feeling back. But the price for little necks was high and we made good money, though we earned every penny of it. The dry suit keeps most of your body dry but not all and it is very restrictive. Had to wear a lot of lead to hold us in place while we worked. Respect for people who work the water whether on the top or below.

      @thecatchwithjardar3529 Месяц назад

      Thanks for the comment Rick. As for dead sharks, they were all released quickly and quite lively. Yes that tow had a lot of damaged catch, which serves no one’s purpose, including the vessel. When working soft bottom it was better targeted. Remember everything that comes on board is counted towards quota, thereby making this sustainable (in theory admittedly). Sustainable does not mean perfect. The industry has come a long way after decades of mismanagement.

      Hopefully it came across in the video that by catch is counted and is part of management plan. This creates incentive for everyone to reduce by catch. Yes bottom trawling is far less targeted than other methods, but measures are in place to make this a sustainable resource.

      Salty thanks for the comment. In the end it all comes down to management of resource. As long as the amount of fish is managed to allow for sustainability, that’s what’s most important in the end. Measures have been taken to meet this goal. These harvest methods are used in Norway and Iceland and they have massive sustainable fisheries, so it’s not the method only but how we manage it.

      For the record, we need regulation in this industry. Currently there is representation from fisherman government and environmental in the decision making process. In my opinion the biggest issue is making current data more actionable and utilizing resources properly, increasing when available and reducing quickly when necessary. Unfortunate government moves slow and policy is always years behind the data.

      There are set allowable take for both commercial and recreational fisheries. Neither should be allowed to take whatever they want. Hopefully you picked up from the video that management works but the regulations are not in lock step with reality. Yes there was major over fishing in the past, but to blame harvesters who are working under effective management framework just doesn’t make sense. As the fishery (hopefully) builds everyone will be allowed more fish. Just look to Norway and Iceland and see how well it works and they harvest 100’s of times as much cod as we do all sustainably. Thanks for watching and commenting

      Thanks for commenting John. I feel your pain, regulations are tough. I edited Marks comments on the topic quite a bit, I do plan to make it into its own video. The regulations for New England ground fish are quite archaic IMO the biggest issue is that realtime data is not actionable, causing regulations to be many years behind the science. Also that data deficiency is used to close fisheries. They have the budget, use it, and get the data!! Haddock being closed because the govt didn’t survey is unacceptable.

      Thanks for the comment!!! Bottom trawling is of course a hot button topic. It was my first time out on a bottom trawler and I was very surprised when we came up the sharks. What I was hoping to convey was that 1) management works and 2) management can be quite inefficient. Practice is (in my observation) many years behind the science If you look at the practices in place in the Barents Sea cod fishery shared by Norway and Russia, you’ll find that bottom trawling can be financially viable and both sustainable and low impact. We are getting there too, but our management practices are very complicated.

      Yet fish stocks are up year over year. If you want to keyboard warrior on topics you know nothing about, look in seismic blasting for the wind farms. Hundreds of whales, dolphins sea turtles and countless other species, some endangered (north Atlantic right whales) are washing up dead on the beaches up and down the east coast and because it's government and big money donor funded, it is not allowed to be talked about. Yet as a lobsterman, if one washes up near us they rush down, wrap some b.s. rope around it's tail, smother the media with it and then try and shut us down for good. We have even been told that there is no evidence showing one whale has been killed by entanglement in our area but yet we are the heaviest regulated fishery. So hats of to you keyboard naturalist who has probably never seen the ocean, keep fighting the good fight.

      In case you missed it, this is a managed sustainable fishery. Sustainable does not mean perfect (we ALL wish it were). As Mark said he needs to find areas where there aren’t certain fish so he can observe quota, and even bycatch discards count towards quota. As for cod and fluke, there’s a ton of out there and they are easy to catch. One argument towards recreational catch and keep is that it should be quota based as well and allotted (like the gulf snapper fishery), as to help the proper management.

      @thecatchwithjardar3529 5 месяцев назад

      Sustainable doesn’t mean perfect. Yes bottom trawling has some bycatch mortality. The important thing, which I hope I communicated thru this video, is that anything that comes up gets charged against the quota. The expected effect of this is that harvesters make efforts to avoid bycatch, as it comes straight off the top line. There is also a lot of research going into new trawling methods that put less hardware in the water.

Today scallops are the largest dollar value fishery in the USA and there is a lot of money being made. Hopefully the point we were trying to make was received, that active management works. Closures and active management have created the boom that we have now. I think one important takeaway is that management is always years, if not a decade, behind reality. Data collection (not a perfect science), data analytics, bureaucratic delays and action take a tremendous amount of time. See the flounder video for some discussion on this.

      Thanks @StriperScott!!! We’re so close, only 999,500 to go. Shout and share and it’ll get there. I need to make more content that will drive it also. I’ve got some cool trips lined up but it takes a lot of time!!!! Thanks for the comment.

      Look forward to the content. I fish out of seabrook mostly, love to watch you commercial guys go for it. I can't beleieve you hauled in 4 porbeagles that were 6+ feet each!!! Would you be allowed to keep them for personal consumption, or are they closed that time of year?@@thecatchwithjardar3529

      F/V Gabriella Rose did not have permit to keep. Fortunately they got returned quickly and looked strong going in. Too bad the radio tagging program was over, it would have been really cool to have tracked them afterward

      Never seen 4 porbeagles caught in one net, the smallest was almost 6 feet. Truly remarkable day you guys had!@@thecatchwithjardar3529

    I dig don’t look at how much I can make in a tide just enough to make a decent living think more about the future of it

      Hey thanks for the comment. Where do you dig??? What I found most impactful from our trip with Dan was how he really cared about this environment, and his concern that there really aren’t any young guys coming into the business. Too many people are losing touch with the environment, they’ll talk about what they see in the news but no one actually gets outdoors.

    A very nice haul on the first run, with some unexpected guests on the 2nd. I worked as a fishmonger in a grocery store during my high school days (I'm an avid angler so I already knew how to scale, gut, and clean fish) so almost all the fish listed were familiar to me, but I've never seen a whole live monkfish before, as we only got the skinless tails. I look forward to seeing your next video! P.S. Do these boats sell directly to consumers? Those whiting looked real tasty.

      I started as an angler too, and got into the seafood business from my love of fish and seafood. Boats can’t sell directly to the public, they have to sell to a NMFS primary buyer, who is required to maintain buying records. This helps maintain integrity to the reporting system. The boats have to electronically file a trip report. Trying to line up my next boat as we speak!!!!

      @@thecatchwithjardar3529 In Canada fishing boats can sell directly to the public as long as they get a special license (which is pretty easy to get). I remember going to British Columbia with my parents when I was much younger and buying a couple dungeness crabs and a few pounds of spot prawns straight from a fisherman at the wharf. I chatted with him for a bit and he showed my father and myself around his boat after he found out my father was an active-duty serviceman in the RCN. (My mother stayed back because of the smell, lol) My father and I purchased a freshly caught whole pink salmon the next day at the same wharf from another fisherman. I've never tasted fresher seafood than that which I had in BC. I look forward to seeing where your next video will take you Jardar!
