Well done, beautiful quilt, I might just be able to open one of my jelly rolls to make something similar 😅. A little tip you might like to hear, randomly fold your lovely quilt so the wadding doesn’t form permanent and unsightly ridges along the fold lines.
Good tip Ruth. Thanks
Thanks Leigh. They look lovely. I love learning new things and I recently learnt to carve/whittle a wooden spoon - great fun! 💕🌿
love this idea, always enjoy a visit with you.
I love your approach to crafting . Thank you for sharing it .
Your experiments look like a lot of fun! Nice to see the cats sleeping in their bed/peeping out of a window again 😊
Your free motion looks fab! I watched the same video you mentioned. Such a good idea to make a pot holder quilt x
They are very pretty Leigh, and would make lovely gifts as well
After making several sweaters in a row, I've decided to master sock knitting and find the perfect recipe for me. Enjoyed your video.
I started a simple crew neck raglan by Ann Budd, I am watching my number of stitches and measurements like a hawk. I have trouble with the fitting. I also started a pair of dk socks for Christmas gift. The pattern is out of the Saltwater Gifts book. Enjoy those books. Your sweater looks warm and cozy and the color is fantastic for you.
Ooo, are you using one of Ann's sweater books? Have you tried her patterns before?
Yes it is out of her top down sweaters. I have used her patterns before but not a sweater pattern so I have high hopes. Hope you have a great week
I have this book. Might have to take a browse through it again.
Always enjoying hearing from you but your postcards are way too short!!
Oh dear, that's just too bad. Maybe one day I'll learn to loop time and get more stuff done. Otherwise let's just enjoy the moment.
What a wonderful combination of yarn and pattern! I wasn't aware of the design (or the designer) you've chosen, but the jumper looks great. I'll have to check it out and her other designs too!
I've queued a few, but not knitted any.
Funnily enough I have been thinking of doing some Avocado dyeing too but found the mordants confusing so your postcard was very interesting Leigh
I'm sure there must be other mordants, but it does depend what you're dying
I laughed when you mentioned you had many more avocado pits than needed. I did the same thing when I explored natural dyes. I saved several freezer bags full of pits and skins only to realize later that I only needed a few to make my dye pot. Most of them found their way to our compost pile. I purchased 100% cotton white nightshirts to experiment with, knowing no matter how they turned out I could wear them. Wasn’t thrilled with the streaks running through them and the color varied wildly. I’m glad I tried it but once was enough for me. 😂
Yes, my compost heap saw a lot of avocado action too. And I need not have enlisted friends to help save them either.
I was really interested in your dye process Leigh I have some white cotton which I do embroidery on and sometimes think a coloured background would be good how many avocado skins and stones did you use? My cotton is white so would it be a stronger colour after dyeing.
I think three or four stones would give you quite a good colour for an A3 sized but of fabric.
Hi! I like your result in cotton! For wool, I don’t mordant when dying with avocado or yellow onion. I do add vinegar, but I don’t even think that’s necessary. There are enough tannins that you’re not supposed to need mordant. Maybe you might try again with wool or silk!! I agree - the less complicated the better!
I wonder if there would be a difference in colour fastness.
@@leighk1275 yes there may be. I dyed some handspun Cheviot with yellow onion skins. It’s a deep and beautiful gold. However, I haven’t knit anything with it yet and it’s stored. (I did win a blue ribbon for it at the Virginia Fiber Festival last year, though!)
Nice experiment 😍 I’ve read a few natural dyeing books and done a bit of natural dyeing and this is the first I’ve heard of different mordants for protein v cellulose 🤔 In fact, one of the (many) great things about natural dyeing is that you can throw wool and cotton in the same pan and the dye will work on both 🤩 I now need to do some research, thank you 👍🏻
What mordant do you use? Or do you not mordant?
@@leighk1275 just alum, the sulphate version 😁
I haven't knitted anything in so long - love all the socks and the stripes and your friend will be so lucky to receive some lovely made by you socks !
Nice to see you !
I enjoyed (always have) your podcasts/postcards. I have no podcast but often work from my car. I recall your " office" from your car. These days I have a constant companion wherever I go AND I make sure my little Charlie (dog though he's never been referred to as a dog. He's an excellent person). Is with me. I toyed with plant based dyeing using Polk berries. Poisonous but make a beautiful HOT Pink. I didn't soak my fabric first thinking the water would dilute the plant material. I just plunged my old sheet into the color bath and let it sit there until it was a pleasing color to me. To set/mordant the mess, I used white vinegar after rinsing most of the extra dye out. Just saturated the fabric well and hung it to dry. My children were very small then so there was no leaving things set. Were I to dye these dsys, I thing I'd use the dame process but dye more fabric. The color you have is Beautiful. Hope you continue to Plant Bade Dye. I'd like to try Onion. Might not be a good idea but then again? Thank you ❤
I love the soft, slightly grubby pink you get from avocado. I also liked the check effect you achieved! Shame about the wool samples, but making mistakes is the best way to learn isn't it!
Hello to you and Charlie dog. It sounds like you dying experiment was good fun. What happened to the sheet?
Oooh, it’s fabulous… well done🥰. 🐨🦘👋🏻
Thanks
Lovely to see the finished quilt, it looks so beautiful. I think we all need to embrace the 'perfectly imperfect' in our work, so wonky embroidery can be a thing of beauty. I'm sure the quilt will keep you really cosy! As for the other quilt, that's so pretty! It needs to be finished to shine!
My winky embroidery will be a relic from the times if handwriting.
Your quilt is beautiful! I can’t wait to see the top finished.
I'm excited to have an intention for this green quilt.
You are hysterical. You are going to put those socks into the cabinet!!!!!!! (For a few years) 😅. For some reason, after numerous pairs of socks knitted over the years, I cannot figure out how to do a toe on a sock. I’ve pulled it out several times and still Greek to me. The first sock toe I got so flustered I just forced it and well I really need to rip that back too. I should put them in the cupboard because every time I sit down in my chair I can hear them screaming at me in the project bag next to me to fix them.
Yes, put them away for a few years.
I always enjoy seeing your podcasts. Thank you for sharing ideas.
Thank you for showing Leigh. Always enjoyable 💕🌿
Lovely socks Leigh! I've not been knitting many socks recently, so I must up my sock knitting game again. They're such a lovely thing to make.
I certainly don't need more socks in my own drawers.
That looks great Leigh,x
Thanks
I loved hearing about your quilt Leigh and look forward to the next instalment. I made my brother a quilt recently and loved making it for him. The quilt was delivered to him in Australia earlier this month by me and my husband.
Gifts are better hand delivered, aren't they?
Good job. Lovely colors.
Thanks!
❤ how do you know which panel to place where? Do you make long strips up and line them up or do you plan it all out first?
I made the blocks by pairing a light with a dark. I did just start sewing them together randomly, but had to do a bit of unpicking so that there wasn't two with the exact same colour together.
So pretty! I made the top for one once but that is as far as it got 😉
I'm sorry, but I believe jelly rolls are 2 1/2 inches wide, not 2 inches
Is that what I said! Oops. Yes, you're quite right. 2.5"
That quilt looks like so much fun! I remember you making a jelly roll quilt using the quilt race technique! I was inspired and bought a jelly roll which has sat in my stash ever since 😂 You'll have a great time hand quilting this one, will you use your sewing machine to bind it?
The jelly roll race quilt gets a lot of use. It lives on the couch, and the linen backing makes it a durable picnic blanket. That was the quilt I used the recycled bottle wadding for. It's been through the wash numerous times. Highly recommend the jellyroll race quilt. Lots of fun.
It is always important to stop for brownies and/or icecream ;-)
I seldom have willpower to go back to big fails.. I used to put them in the bin and squirt bleach on them to make sure they were out of my life. I don’t use bleach now so often big fails get attacked with scissors or burnt in the bonfire of humility (my wood burner). Then I can walk away and erase that the horror ever happened. I am not proud of this. In my sketchbook I have found copious glue and a pretty picture hides most mistakes
Love that heel! I am tempted for sure. Thanks Leigh! 💕🌿
The tutorial is here: ruclips.net/video/IRc3309JUyc/видео.html
oh thanks, I love your postcards but this one was particularly brilliant as i now know there's alot of this stuff happening elsewhere 😂. As for your avacado sludge, I'm sure you know that the colour will fade even if the fabric is mordanted (very nicely from peach to warm beige but better to be aware just in case. 😊
Thanks Marie. Yes, I am aware the colour will fade. I'm interested in the way the mordant might change the colour.
Sludge... spot on jargon! And I love that you import waste too!
Eek! Imported waste! Dealing with waste makes me feel quite anxious. The thought of actively acquiring more...😱
@@leighk1275 I totally get that and at times feel that way too. But I also view making use of other folks waste (= by products) as a key part of a 'circular/cottage economy' and therefore a rebellious act... 😂
Glad you stopped by. Sometimes you just need to knit socks. xx
I hope you enjoyed your mooching Monday!
Hope you had a wonderful Monday Leah 💕
Thank you.🙂
What a lovely 100 days project. Thank you for sharing it💜. It's got me inspired to come up with my own. I'll have to have a think about what it will be.
Keep it simple, and fairly open.
Sound level is too low to hear anything on my iPad
Thanks for letting me know Sharon. I'll see what I can do for the next one.
I am so pleased you did this video. I love to see them. Isn’t it a wonderful thing to do. Thank you for sharing. I am sewing 30 days of fish. My biggest mistake is that I haven’t cut the fabric in careful enough squares or rectangles and had no forward planning of what to do with the little shapes when I have finished. But as you say, it is really about the process and the relaxing fishy moments each day as I sit with my unwell father… or fret about my unwell father… or relax when he is a little better ..
It's not about forward planning or making a thing though is it? Each fish starts new. Maybe a fresh start each day is part of the process.
Pretty socks! They would be beautiful knitted in a self striping yarn. I loved seeing you and Marshall having a cuddle together.
Hope you had a wonderful holiday! you're little garden is coming right along. Pretty soon you'll have things sorted out little by little. xx
Your garden is looking great! Definitely a smart woman's garden.
Happy Mooching Day! Your fleece sampling sounds like fun. Looking forward to seeing how you get on with them. I enjoyed my fibre advent last year for the same reason - a few new to me breeds, and a mix of rolags, bats and top. I'd love to join my local guild but they meet during the day while I'm at work.
Our Guild has quite a few zoom and other spin-off talks and events. Might pay to see if your group does the same.
Thanks Leigh, I always enjoy hearing from you. I have been spinning up some merino bits and pieces trying to have a “clear out”. I looked up the website you mentioned and feel quite temped to try out 10:06 10:06 some of this lady’s fleeces as there are some interesting breeds.
Hello Leigh! Boreray is one of the islands in the St. Kilda archipelago but I'm not sure if that's where the sheep breed originates from, or whether they are related to Soays which are the traditional sheep of the main island and now run wild there. More investigation is required! Your spinning sampling sounds fun.
