The Dutch Genocide of the Banda Islands Explained

Hi everyone,
Dutch history is not always great. The Dutch East India Company was trying to get the monopoly on some of the worlds most expensive spices in the 17th century. And Jan Pieterszoon Coen - or J. P. Coen took it to the next level with the genocide of the Banda Islands in the Moluccas in modern day Indonesia- but he did succeed in creating the monopoly and was rewarded for his actions. I think it's important to talk about these kind of stories, so I hope you found it interesting.

Great video! Is there the possibility you could help with public transportation directions, please. Step-by-step instructions on how to get from Rotterdam Cruise Port with end destination at Gouda City Center. Exactly which train/tram to take. Exactly where to pick them up from etc. We will be in Rotterdam for one day from 8am to 5pm and would like go to Gouda from the cruise port and back. Thank you.

Do you have any information on the "Holland Travel Ticket" (use any domestic public transportation in one calendar day for 70 or 48 euros, depending)? I am reading that to use Intercity trains with that ticket, you must also purchase a "supplement" as they call it. But I cannot find any information on how that is done.

I ❤ your video here and especially about visitors serious need for "respect." It's sad how people can be so oblivious to their disrespect in any land where there's culture, hard work, local customs, good people but clueless visitor Zombies buried in the minutiae of their mobile phones, earbuds and perfect self loathing glam images for an audience of primarily their selfish selves. cRaZy they have to be reminded about R-E-S-P-E-C-T but understood because I live in Hawaii and we have had "respect" in various themes in our state & islands tourism messaging since the Hawaii Tourism Authority launched the "educational"... "Malama Hawaii Campaign" (aka, Mālama Hawaiʻi) p.s. Gotta luv Aretha Franklin's 1965 HUGE hit, "Respect" :)

All of my friends here in the states think that I'm going there just to smoke pot but the funny thing is that I do not plan on visiting a coffee shop at all as there is just so much to do in Amsterdam that I would not want to ruin it by being all stoned! I have found the check-in/check-out procedure totally annoying. In Toronto (Canada) we just tap a debit or credit card when we board a bus/tram or enter a subway station and that's it. With that tap we pay 2 hours of transportation ( for $3.30 ) If we board another bus/tram within those 2 hours we tap again, and we either ride that bus/tram for free or we pay a small supplement ( 50 cents - $1). Simple! My solution in Amsterdam was to buy a 3 day pass (GVB) online and use the QR code from smartphone to check-in/check-out. For trains, I just purchased tickets from the vending machines. I was afraid to use my credit/debit cards or an OV chipkaart in that system.

Here's another don't do in The Netherlands. Do not walk along the cycling trails from the opposite direction. Women wear short skirts, and you can see their under wears while cycling. I'm pretty sure 2 women said something bad to me about it, but I did not understand a thing. I was just following Google maps arrows, no ill intention, you can't memorize a "straat" name for more than 5 seconds.

We have primary sources stating very clearly that about 1200 Bandanese men were killed. The rest were shipped out. So it's a combination of a mass slaughter with ethnic cleansing, not a genocide. The 15.000 was a number made up by one of his enemies who wasn't there and is regurgitated by historians who have to state higher numbers to show how bad colonialism was and how good they themselves are or something.

i appreciate that you are open about the ugly side of history where the dutch (or specifically the dutch elites) played a role in the massacre of civilians in Banda. Attitudes towards the colonised people of a different race play a big role here. But that is not the only reason why genocide happens. For instance, during the second Anglo - Boer war in South Africa around 1902 about 30, 000 people of dutch origin, of which many were woman and children, were starved to death in concentration camps and the whole population was subjected to scorched earth policy by the British.

Kinda a bit sensitive topic but that's history.. but don't forget about so many positive impacts that Dutch govt gave to Indonesia such as in education system n etc. They built many good hospitals too. I remember my late grandpa told me, he had a good Dutch friend who taught him about table manner. My grandpa at that time was still kid n his Dutch friend was already young adult. They met in a church every Sunday n they became friends. Fun fact is.. although Dutch colonialism was here for so so so many years.. Most of Indonesian nowadays do not speak Dutch. My grandpa did speak Dutch fluently. But I don't. :D I would love to learn Dutch.. because I love the Netherlands! Hehe..

I think you may find the name Coen not as Dutch as you might believe, there was a certain ethnicity that played a large role in slavery and colonialism that is little mentioned today but definitely worth looking into.

You know, some people from that ethnicity are disgusted by the actions their distant relatives commit, but the hallmark of bigotry is a kind of stupidity where one can’t tell the difference between an individual, a subset, and a set. This kind of thinking, if it can even be called thinking, is indicative of someone with poor reasoning skills. This ethnicity contains people who profiteered off of slavery and also people who spent their whole lives in opposition to exploitation. Right now, there is a certain ethno-state which claims to represent these people which is guilty of terrible crimes and spreads a disgusting ideology. But at their core, they think just like you: “some percentage of another ethnicity that isn’t the one I was born into are guilty of crimes against humanity, so their entire ethnicity is all guilty via non-mathematical induction”… Which is not to mention that there are many horrible crimes across the world which have nothing to do with them. If you don’t like what those people do, maybe you should stop thinking like them. Target the individual, the group of people, the political movement, the ideology, the *rationale that leads someone to commit disgusting deeds* but if you insist on lumping people together by ethnicity, you aren’t merely being an idiot, but you’re engaging in the unique type of thinking that the worst people who ever lived employed.

You are correct. JP Cohen was a crypto-Jew with parents from Italy, pretending to be Calvinist in Hoorn. The biggest financier of the VOC was the Jew Isaac Le Maire, but the pre-companies were, for a large part, descendant from Jews from Portugal. In fact, The Jew Josef Nasi was instrumental in financing the Dutch attacks against Spain, and he became a courtier to both William of Orange and the Ottoman Court, who aided the Dutch in destroying Spain. The only reason the Dutch got an empire was because it had rejected Catholicism, which is the ancient enemy of the Jews, hence the atomic bombs on the two Catholic capitals of Japan, for instance. The last director of the VOC was Isaac de Pinto who funnelled the VOC treasury to England where they would transfer the capital to the new British Empire and their Tea Company. The independence of the USA, too, was financed by Dutch Jews with ambassador John Adams / Dutch loan who lived in Amsterdam. When there is a revolution--independence movements, you know that Jews immediately support it to acquire powerful positions in the newly formed nation. Expect the same for Iran and Kurdistan.

I know this video is 4 years old but feel the need to give some pointers. Some things have changed, some things became easier (and some things I just disagree with... or very much agree with) *{midway edit: halfway and I have already cut half of what I wrote lol, I think I just will keep it to (I hope) Usefull informaton, still long... I am sorry}* Tullip fields, very good advice. I think food and drink is personal taste but I agree there are much better beers, especially local brews. Small talk: I disagree that we don't do that. Electronic payments: All pin machines in stores will accept your Google or Apple pay.. In fact my bank (ING) informed me this week they fade out their own electronic system in favor of (in my case) Google Pay. As far as I am aware, credit cards can be added to Google Pay as well. OVChip/OVPay: lol, that was a conveluted way t say "I recommend buying a Public Transport card".. that double negative made it a bit odd and might confuse people. Just an observation, not meaining to be rude. I agree with everything and think that for a short visit the physical card is probably the best option. Few additions to your advice. The OVChip card is €7,50 but people should keep in mind they will need add funds and that each person needs their own card. Inform yourself about the prices before you travel. For a week in Amsterdam I would think you start with at least €50/ Travel on a OVChip is cheaper but just taking one bus/tram/metro across town and back will be about 8 at least if you are lucky. Also always check in but also ALWAYS check out, with a transfer between different modes of transport (or different operators) Always check out with the first and check in with the other (and out again as well of course) I think with OVPay the same is true as with other e-payments. You can add your CC to them as well. Not sure about Google/Apple Pay. I haven't traveled yet since I had to switch so I am not sure how that will go. (I will add a comment if this proves to be an issue that could affect tourists) OVPay might be an idea for those making multiple trips to the Netherlands or those staying for a prolonged period of time. Weed: THANK YOU... finally someone informing correctly about the law and enforcement policy. Of course you are aware the situation has changed. Smoking in Coffeeshops is no longer allowed unless it is with tobacco replacements. Many if not most coffeeshops therefor have opted just not allow smoking inside anymore. Some shops might remain (especially in Amsterdam I think) but in general most shops are now "take out" only. Allow this old man that has been a pothead in the Netherlands for the past 43 years to give a few pointers for the responsible greenbrigade members. Be responsilbe, ne aware of your surroundings. And I don't mean watch out for the cops. I mean this in a social sense. Especially in the bigger cities but basically in any town there will be spots where you are secluded from the main traffic. Smaller parks, small and big recreation areas. Places where it is normal for people to be seen but that are less or even hardly visited.. You see children or older folks... heck other people in general, you hide it discreetly and continue being yourself. No need for panick or stress. If you make sure that when people walk by they aren't enveloped in your smoke, they won't mind. Be respectful, be "soft spoken", don't make a mess, clean after yourself if needed. Don't blast music... in short, don't be a nuisance. That said... IF for whatever reason you are stopped by police, they 5 gram allowence is only good in the sense you won't be punished, they WILL however confiscate. They do have that right and in most cases will enforce it. Tipping: Imho, if you enjoyed the service provided, the tip is a way to show appreciation. There is not set amount but if you tip make it appropriate to the bill. For lower amounts a common tactic is to "round it up" to the nearest five or zero. With larger amounts nothing is "expected" but tipping 3 euro on a 150 euro bill is "not done". I must say I like the "cash tip" idea, will implement that from now on. Snacks: Where is the Cheese Souffle warning? *Warning- Biting into a Cheese Souffle 9or Kroket/Bitterbal) that just exited the fryer is like eating molten lava, wait at least a few minutes before enjoying your snack* Bikepath: Red is dead... that is all they need to know. More Places: Proudly representing Utrecht but highly recommend Valkenburg, Leeuwarden or the islands (Vlieland, Ameland etc) as well... among many many others. Weed: (again) No no no... I am sorry... If you haven't done it in your own country, do NOT use it in the Netherlands either. Although in general people will not experience problems, there are cases, espeically with beginners, that people got real issues. Although the effects are temporary, they can last long enough to bring you in real trouble. Especially since you are in a country where you don't speak the language, have no contacts and nowhere to seek help. Do NOT come to the netherlands for your "my first Reefer" experience. Do not do in Amsterdam what you wouldn't do at home. Cafe: If people are quiet in the cafe, you are in the wrong cafe. I am not the type to go to a cafe but that I know. As for coffee, more and more places are popping up that are clearly places to enjoy a coffee. With all the new rules around smoking, people won't make the mistake again I think. Things I didn't comment on I very much agree with. Excellent video. I hope the information I gave (and the ramblings of an old man lol) are useful for some. You did very well with giving some great information, I know what video to show if people have questions.

The Germans think the following about Dutch drivers: : Schwarze Zeichnen auf gelbem Grund: halte Abstand und bleib gesund. And this is why: 1. _Tailgating_ ( Bumperkleven). Normally you are supposed to keep a distance of speed ( in hm/h) / 2 ( in meters). At 100 km/h it is 50 m. They drive so close, that you cannot see their licence plate in the rear mirror 2. _Taking right in_ ( rechts inhalen). When I am taking over cars I keep a distance between me and the car in front. Someone thinks it is too big ( but not, it is 50 m ), thus they think they can take in from the right. Annoying. 3. _Exits out of the blue_ (Afslagen komen uit de lucht vallen ). They take the motorway exit in the last moment, diagonally intersecting 2-3 lanes. 4. _Attracting force of the left lane_ (Aantrekkingskracht van de linker rijbaan ). When they come up the motorway, they immediately go to the left lane. 5. _As a brick before your nose_ ( Als een baksteen voor je neus). When they go to the right lane, they throw the car before you, stealing your braking distance. This is a very annoying thing. 6. _ Cutting a bit off_ ( Stukje afsnijnen / bochten snijden ) They cannot take the curve, they cut it off. All of a sudden, you find a car in your lane before you, because they were just too lazy to turn a bit more on the steering wheel. 7. _Not making you place_ ( Geen ruimte maken ). It is not compulsory, but squares with the common sense to help incoming traffic yield by changing a lane left on the highway. Not for the Dutch - they simply do not care. I had to buy a 252 PK strong car to yield on the short yielding lanes safely - because they will not let you in. 8. _They are Jesus, they mean to walk on water_ ( Ze menen dat ze op het water kunnen lopen zoals Jezus ). When it rains, they would not take the gas back. In NL, there is the ZOAB asphalt, which facilitates more this behavior. In Germany, where we take the gas back to 100 km/h when it rains, the Dutch stick to their behavior - they gas through with 150-160 km/h. On the A3 in germany, it recently lead to the death of 3 Dutchmen: 2 Porsches and a BMW was totalled, since they gave gas immediately in Germany, while the road was wet.

Thank you. VERY HELPFUL! You are very clear and one can learn it well, the way you teach it. Hoping to go to Omsterdom soon. I will start saying Howda for the cheese right away, and practice the other words when I can. I will also look for your other videos. I love learning languages.
