Great vid! Definitely gonna check out mercari!
Awesome! Thank you!
I think I might give Mercari a try. I am an eBay seller ands have been for quite a few years. But have a sold few books here and there, mostly I sell electronics and musical instrument staff (so yeah, electronics, lol) I have several rare and hard to find books I would like to sell BUT! I really am pretty well annoyed with eBay because of the criminally high fees they charge. Thanks!
Give it a try! As a seller on there I had no real feedback or sales history so it took a couple weeks to make a sale but after that they were more consistent.
since when did Mercari get media mail? i've been waiting for that option.
No clue but it’s there! It’s a little overpriced since 1lb is $4.63 and the lowest option I think they show is $4.99 but I don’t get the funds Mercari gives me the label so I guess it just is what it is.
Books...😉
📚
curious to know thoughts on vintage paperbacks a lot of them are longtail low dollar items I find them cheaply at library some dead author's gain following from RUclips videos, but many are meh would you recommend a platform for those 5 dollars sells Thanks
Yes Mercari since there are no seller fees and no relisted fees like on eBay. If it sits for a long time you just have to be comfortable being long term storage. Also bundling a bunch of the same author together may help move them faster.
All seller fees on mercari, simply moved to buyers. As a buyer you pay a service fee of 10-15%, plus tax, plus shipping, plus cc transaction fee. A $15 item with $7 shipping runs around $30. My sales went from daily to a couple a month with yhis change.
Yes you’re right on fees. However, I know many that are doing amazing now on Mercari. Or staying consistent with what they were before. Everyone has a different experience just like eBay and FBA and everywhere else. The good thing is there is no fee to list and try it and no fee to end all listings if it doesn’t work out. Never have eggs in one basket anyways. Appreciate your feedback. I know some haven’t had a good experience.

Thank you for for doing this video. I started selling Amazon earlier this year and really got going with shipments in the last two months. I'm focused more on media but also Nintendo and Lego and some books. I've sold more on Amazon in a few months than I've sold on eBay all year. I did sell on Amazon many years ago prior to FBA. It's a whole different world now. I've always had so many questions and concerns about selling on Amazon and got so much out of this and look forward to you and Koty chatting again in the future. For now, I will carry on with a different perspective about storage fees, high-priced books, etc. Thank you again
I’m so glad you enjoyed it!
Does Amazon pick the price of the book if you do fba?
Kind of, it’s based on market and historical sales. Now amazon will make a listing inactive if its currently common price is $23 and you try to list yours for $150.
How is FBA going for you? I figured you had a Stephen King collection. Do you have all of the Richard Bachman stuff. I never met a Fred Mustard Stewart collector though. I am guessing you like The Mephisto Waltz! I noticed that DSM-5 on your shelf! :)
I love Fred’s sci fi and thrillers and his romance Six Weeks. But the historical fiction with the exception of Ellis Island are not my favorites. FBA is surprisingly coming in the lead with income compared to eBay and Etsy. That could be because I am sending almost everything to them now though. No Richard Bachman yet! Most unique in the collection is some first editions and unique covers of IT and Carrie.
& yea on Mephisto Waltz! I have all the different cover editions in PB and HC lol 😂
@ very cool. Glad to hear FBA is going well! Find those Bachmans lol
This was extremely informative and much appreciated. I currently sell books on eBay, and now I'm in the process of setting up a FBA account. I like the fact that for average selling books I don't have to take time to take photo's like I do on eBay for books with greater rarity. Also, thanks for dissuading me from going the FBM route. I assumed that the storage fees would eat up my profits, however, I have over 2k books to send in, and I think my inventory will offset the fees. Thoughts?
Absolutely will. There is up front cost yes. Signing up, shipping to send it in, but once the sales start happening usually within a few weeks or a month it all becomes worth it. Please use a scouting software though. Scoutly scout IQ book pro jungle scout, something that will help you get data on the items before you send in that much inventory!
Kody is talking about 50, 60, 70 dollar books as being his target selling. But I find almost no books like that. I work to find 15-20 dollar books. I should also add that I have a dead pile because my husband, who recently lost his vision, refused to let me dispose of his books ( and he has over 1000 of them.) And now we can sell thrm. And a lot of those books are listed on Ebay as 10-15. 5 dollar books go to our library book sale unless I can bundle them.
My average book price on Amazon in $18-$23. Totally manageable you just have to focus on volume with that average price too. Death piles are hit and Miss, my point was more don’t go spending for FBA and take weeks to list them because the price may be very different by then and then you’re mad or discouraged.
I was told not to sell sci-fi & fantasy paperbacks but they have become my most popular seller while not my most profitable, but worthwhile on eBay. Are they profitable on FBA ?
They can! I just send in some Neil Gaiman ex library to FBA. Low profit $4-$7 but I send it all in. All adds up.
Oh I’m excited to watch this!
The pallet of books behind Koty looks interesting 🤔
@@josh_graffno idea what you’re talking about 😅
Thanks man!!!
Fun video! Good info! 😮
Thank you!
What is Amazon FBA? Sorry, again, new to your videos. 😊
No worries! It’s an online selling marketplace. So you send products into Amazon’s warehouse and it’s fulfilled by amazon. Meaning they pack it, ship it to buyer, and handle all customer service.
I don’t see the link to Scout IQ. Can you elaborate on what that software does? New to book selling. 😊
Yes I forgot to put links in the video! lol 😂 Scout IQ is a software that you can scan barcodes and see if a book is profitable for Amazon FBA.
look who has 5k subscribers
Thanks Jeff!
So helpful.
Glad it was helpful! Thank you
clever idea with the pics great vid!
Yes, working on it right now with my Etsy listings!
I really appreciate this video! Never crossed my mind, but the message about ship dates in the pics is brilliant
I really think it’s a great touch. I hope it helps!
Can anyone tell me how I can remove an oil and turmeric stain from a book cover plsssss😭😭😭😭😭😭it's my sisters book tht I stained and she will kill me if she finds out, so someone pls help me out💀
@@ashley_miraculous_gacha2085 oh man. First, is the dust jacket paper or glossy? Removing oil from paper in general is hard since the fibers in paper are going to soak up that oil and quickly. If it’s a paperback book I would say you need to just buy her another copy :(
❤
Thanks Romie
Thanks Romie
So many great ideas....thank you for sharing all this knowledge ❤
Glad you like them!
There really is a market for everything ❤ and I definitely see the appeal of the handwriting for nostalgia purposes
Yes absolutely! I can appreciate it
Literally just bought a fashion history book *because* it was listed as having been from the personal collection of a costume historian and was annotated throughout the text.
Oh my gosh I love this! It reminds me of people who use to buy Clive Barker books just for his doodles inside.
Hi Katey - good video. I saw a rare book dealer who talked about selling books with annotations and inscriptions + Especially pertinent with generational differences.
Very interesting! Thanks for stopping by!
I sold a book about a dog breed and it had legal pad notes from the previous owners dog’s condition; people don’t mind when you’re honest about what they are getting; I love adding the flaws or materials or ISBN to title because some people don’t read description or look at all pictures; thanks always for sharing your experiences and research; continued blessings and success ❤
I looked that! I too try to include relevant info attached with a book. It truly can add value. This may be a good video idea too! Thank you for watching!
This is great info. I always knew that some people like the writing and inscriptions, but never thought to put it in my title. I usually just put it in my description. Some people like worn out, well loved, items.
I hope it helps! I’ll start using it more myself too.
This is really good advice to hear! I just got a set of 7 original 1st Wizard of Oz books from 1904 from an estate sale but a few are in very worn condition… I was hesitant about listing but I’ll try now!
Please do! I sell “acceptable” condition all the time.
i love selling vintage books with annoitations - i have 2 early 1950's arithmetic text books with some writing and formulas, even some old homework. i have a copy of Strawberry Girl with lots of teacher notes. oh and i just sold a copy of Codependent no more, which was heavily highlighted and also had notes i almost kept for me! lol book lovers understand there is this timeless connection with books, almost like a part of you is still in them after you read it <3
I love it!!
I have used the term "heavily annotated" but usually not because I think someone will be looking for that, more so they are forewarned that it isn't pristine. I've definitely been aware there's an interest, but I think its also very hard to find antique books with writing throughout, because books were much more precious in the 1800's. I love inscribed books myself, when I'm selling a book with an inscription, I also type it out in my description, especially if there are any names, I try to include the full name. There's always a chance an ancestor searching for books about their lineage will be searching the name and find it
I love that idea too. Ancestry searches are so underrated but a really profitable niche.
Just found your channel - thanks for this! I enjoy selling vintage religious books on Ebay. This is a great thing to look for.
Thank you for watching!! Glad you found value.
Crazy "Out Of The Box" Video. I guess there are more niches in bookselling to be discovered. Thanks Katey!
Thank you so much for watching!
❤ great video
Glad you liked it!!
I have thrown so many of these away 😮
Me toooooooo
ooo fun
Thanks so much for this info, so much to learn. questions: 1. Are you still in SC, How do you keep Etsy buyers from selecting media mail for non-qualified items and do you provide 1 0n 1 consultations? Thanks for all that you do!
Hi there, I emailed you back!
Great video, I am going to a book sale this weekend that I did well on sourcing postcards last time I was there. I recall them having lots of bookmarks too so I will have to see if I can put some small lots together to try it out.
Yes I definitely will take a second glance now more too!
To anyone watching this, Katey’s custom bookmarks are amazing. She created a whole set of bookmarks and a journal out of a Labyrinth VHS cover for my wife. She not only gave me options of what cover but kept me updated through the whole process. My wife was amazed of the quality.
Thank you so much!
Hi Katey. Thanks for the video. Really interesting. Good information. Georgia
Hey Georgia thank you so much.
I throw all my bookmarks and ephemera from books into the bottom drawer to go through later. Thanks for the video!
Great strategy for sure! 👍 get that money
i'd love to watch more crafting videos! paper crafts is so soothing i'm a big fussy cutter
😂😂😂 I feel that!
There's been so many learning curves with book reselling for me. I would find a good source for buying books in bulk, and then new management would change buying guidelines or would cut out selling in bulk altogether. Selling to used book stores had faster turnaround for small profit books, but it was stressful to depend on that to cover living expenses. When my main source for buying in bulk flopped, I went back to buying individual books. Road trips to hunt for books were fun, and I didn't need to deal with all of the trash from media pallets. My strategy was to find higher end books to sell on Ebay, and price them at half of the Amazon price. I'm sure buyers bought the books are then resold on Amazon, but I was happy with half of the Amazon price. Changing book reselling to a secondary source of income helped too. I wasn't focused on thinking I need a certain amount of money for living expenses, and capital for box truck rentals, media gaylords, and shipping supplies, by the end of the month. I still buy 2 gaylords of books a week to stay busy with something but it was freeing to stop buying 40 gaylords a month. I quit thinking as much on a monthly sales basis and more of a quarter basis. Some months, I might not sell the first high end book, but then there's months where I sell 4, so it all averages out. I've been transferring any profit from reselling books and investing it into 5 stocks that pay dividends, nothing huge, but in another 5 years of compounding, it will cover 1/3 of living costs. Or I could keep letting it compound another 15 years and semi-retire. Side note, I've never been big into collecting things before, and sure, I want to sell every book I have, but its kind of cool to show friends a high end book like a rare OOP photobook. So in a way, I enjoy collecting the rare books. It makes having patience easier, lol rather than having boxes and boxes of the Left Behind Series books.
Hey, thanks so much for this video! I currently only sell vintage on Etsy (books And other stuff), and I'm only part time. I've been interested in these other platforms, but its a little overwhelming to me, so I really appreciate you giving this overview of all these different sites.
I’m so glad! 😀 thank you for watching
Brown bags! Brilliant! I always deal with banker boxes
Me too and usually prefer them but brown bags this time actually worked out excellent
Selling the frame alone after craft? I have the perfect image for what you described.
I think so yes! 👍
I love how you describe "just have to go"! 😊 My brain says it to me all the time 😅. Mainly focus on books but always have to look lol.
lol good I’m not alone
The only issue with multiplatform is when they all work! 😂 I believe central seller manager software that interlinks the platforms is worth the price, if you build it right it makes just 3 places to login and manage the business
Yes, list perfect does auto delist which is helpful.
this was such a great video!! i can't believe I was sleeping on this chat what an amazing job you did. You guys sounded like book besties!! I started on Pango when they first started and i uninstalled it bc i was buying more than selling. i loved it as a buyer and so this made me redowload the app, bc i love all the new changes ya'll were talking about!! and i just found out that i still have money on here! lol that's good to know
I totally get it. I hope you enjoy it!
