The Quahog King
Get to know commercial Rhode Island clam harvester Jody King and learn a thing or two about how to rake clams, as well as how to prepare them for a delicious meal!
It’s fair to say that few people know Rhode Island clams-specifically quahogs (also called littlenecks or hard-shelled clams)-better than Jody King. At 64, the affable and energetic King has spent over 40 years raking a living from the waters of Narragansett Bay, and he does it year-round, in every kind of weather. Small wonder he possesses Popeye-like forearms.
King is also a natural teacher, frequently conducting instructional classes on shellfishing for the state’s Department of Environmental Management. These well-attended cl...

So loving this series guys… I love the part in the very beginning where you’re catching the mackerel in the harbor… I’m from the Shenandoah Valley, Virginia. My wife and I went to Maine for the first time several years ago. I had been there a couple times business no further Norris then Kennebunkport then we went and rented a converted boathouse in Stonington… I’m totally hooked with coastal Maine. I tried to catch some mackerel off my spinning rod, but we were there too early. They hadn’t moved into the coastal areas… I love this man.

I lived on that river for years. Not close, but on. If I reached out the window and dropped a stone, you’d heard a splash. My sister was later found dead on the side of the river on the day after Christmas.

Beautiful, rugged Maine, at its finest, though it still shows the scars of centuries of logging. Especially on the many tributaries that run into Moosehead. Many of these streams, with black rock and no tree cover, offers a poor environment for brookies. The depths of Moosehead has tons of small, almost black togue (lake trout). Fishery management should encourage the reduction of these almost invasive native fish by upping the limit like they do on Sebago. I believe it can be managed. That was a rare large togue. I know of two 26 pounders caught. There are not a few logger's tales of 50 pounders hauled back on a sled. Some historians throw water on these tales. But my father knows of a smaller lake where a 48 and 42 pounder were caught through the ice on a branch in 4 feet of water. And of course, the Lower Richardson has the record at almost 40 pounds. I hope to break it! In spring, these waters should be boiling with large lakers like they do on many other of Maine's lakes. Banning smelting was a great idea. Now, how do you control all the cusks? Salmon are rare. Not a native fish. Brook trout (called Coasters in the Great Lakes) have been a real bonus. 5 pounders, especially through the ice, are regularly caught. This is a huge lake. There are many places the fish could be. If you are new to the area, a registered Maine fishing guide is highly recommended (too bad Master Guide Bob Lawrence is retired). Come when the fish are biting. There are many times when they are not. Stop apologizing and be honest with your patrons. They are more apt to return and refer your name. While Moosehead has its share of Moose, a drive up to Katahdin offers a better chance of almost driving up to several mature moose. Though, you should be careful driving through any rural Maine road. Moose don't respect Maine's strict driving laws. Running into a moose is nothing like hitting a deer.

I was born and raised in Connecticut, but at that time I didn’t fish much I now live in New Hampshire and I finished the Connecticut river several times a week. I’m wondering how far up the Connecticut river are stripers common. Another words if I come down for a weekend where do I put my boat in to have the best chance at a striper, we tried to mouth of the Connecticut river two years ago spend a couple of days there we tried bait. We tried live. We tried many things with tips from local fisherman. We had a great time for two days caught a couple of little fish that were hard to identify, a couple of robins. Any help you can give us for our next trip down there which will be soon would be greatly appreciated from ONE Connecticut river lover to another.❤️‍🔥🇺🇸

Nice video 🛶🦀 I know the area real well. My Ancestors were in Saybrook from the start 1634/35 . I'm a Chapman and grew up on South cove ,Mulberry Lane .I've canoed, boated and sailed in the area . Seldens creek was always a nice place to go and jump off the rocks ( granite) . Just south of it is a rock with the date 1834 on it. The Fishing was and still is great .I remember catching doormat fluke in the mouth of the Connecticut River. The blue crabs were huge and everywhere. Plus alot of Starfish ,which I don't see anymore !! 😔catfish in the coves and river !! I swear they have lungs 🤣 the Whole area is very special !! I've also walked the wood's and lived in Lyme for a while . I know the old roads going in coast. Granite foundations, where there was a holding building,it's like walking back nearly 400 years .Also I do alot of bike riding !!! Road and Mountain ,I biked about 70 miles last weak and ended up at Chapman Falls for a dip 🌞 and for all you camper's out here,I picked up a brand new vintage Eureka Timberline 4l from 2003, the 30th yrs anniversary at a thrift store at Crystal mall for 13 dollars !! Yep. They didn't know what it was because they never unwrap it ,just tore the end off and looked ... I had an idea it was quility ,till I got it home and Shazam !!! There it was !!! only thing the black elastics tie downs are beat from dry rot and age .I'm going to replace them. Id like to know ,if anyone knows of groups or an organization I could do work with or be apart of ? Thanks in advance 🌞
