Testing the Sharp SX-76NF100 CRT - Is it an EDTV?

Very little is known about this CRT TV I picked up for free here in Australia. I had a feeling it's another uncommon Enhanced Definition TV capable of 480p, kinda lame right? The cool think is EDTVs don't add any processing unlike HDTVs, so that 480p is lag free! great for gamecube, OG xbox etc. In this video I document my tests, enjoy!

But one thing to be careful of is LG TV's don't support some audio formats, I'd check what formats your TV can output via earc. Basically all it does is discard the video and replaces it with a black 720p picture with the same audio, reducing the bandwidth to something regular hdmi can handle.

    Hey there, so the device came today and I’m having some trouble setting it up. My device has two inputs and one output. I’ve got my PS5 connected right to the input on my TV and I’ve tried every configuration of in and out and nothing I do makes it work. My home theater system has one output and two inputs. Any help you can provide is really appreciated.

      I'll try to help, it's a bit different to my set up. I'm assuming you connected to your avr via hdmi arc or earc? I can say it's important to not use arc or earc on the avr side, just regular hdmi... In fact, don't use an arc compatible hdmi input on the avr if possible. You want your TV to use earc to the device, make sure your hdmi cables are decent (the Ethernet type). I have a feeling your issue is with arc on the avr side though, I know that messes it up

      Yeah that's the idea, does your TV support earc? Make sure earc is on and you are using an eaec supported hdmi to output, connect that to the device, and then to your AVR. Don't use arc on your avr or it will mess it up, don't use crappy hdmi cables or it won't work. The device should output the full uncompressed audio and a blank video image. I have found there is a small audio delay still when gaming, but it's hard to notice. The device isn't perfect, but it's a good solution at a good price. I have a Yamaha RX-V479 receiver that is only capable of passing through 4k @ 60Hz in 4:2:0 format. Like you, using the passthrough to connect to a display tha is capable of 4k @ 120Hz in 4:4:4 format just limits the video quality. Especially when the display has VRR and FreeSync Plus capabilities also. Having this 2nd video about this little gem to say that it is worth buying helps solidify my purchase decision. My source is my PC and I have tried internal and external sound cards, using the modified Windows drivers to force Dolby Digital and DTS output from the onboard S/PDIF, connecting the receiver to it's own HDMI port on my graphics card with the display connected to a second port (Which introduced a whole different set of issues.), the list could go on, which it sounds like you are familiar with those issues. I'm not even looking to use all that this device is capable of. As long as I get Dolby Digital and DTS on the audio side and can get VRR and FreeSync Plus on the video side all working, I'd be good. I could care less about the CEC and ARC support. The other option is a new Yamaha RX-V4A receiver, and while I definitely would like to go that route, I just got done upgrading my PC to the AM5 platform and dumped about $1,000 USD in the process of doing so. So, I'm sure that you can see where this extractor looks pretty damn appealing when I have a receiver that is still quite a capable audio device.

    Hello! Great video! I believe that you are referring to Arcana device (it costs ~$250), however it does a slightly different thing. I believe that your (cheaper) device still requires TV to have eARC that it is able to pass to your AVR. I think that Arcana would be able to connect your XBOX to a TV/projector without eARC/ARC. It is more expensive because it needs to simulate an eARC signal. Your splitter still relies on the eARC signal from TV. Arcana “adds” eARC on the side for TV/projectors that do not have eARC.

Also, I have found LG TV's will pass through Atmos but not other Dolby surround formats for some reason. I think it's worth using an AVR with atmos (a decent speaker set up) for theatre over a soundbar. I use my theatre speakers for tv/music/everything and its a joy. If your avr can't go atmos I would just stick to the soundbar for everything. Try to avoid optical for audio, use your TV's earc port with your soundbar for everything. Brilliant! This disappointment has also tipped the scales and I am now buying a new latest eARC Sony AV Receiver that should play nice with the LG TV straight out of the box. I'm guessing either I have a faulty converter unit or the LG and Pioneer were never meant to play nice together. Cheers.

      I don't think there would be anything out there which will convert optical to hdmi earc. Optical is not lossless, so you are losing quality from the TV, so converting that would not help anyway. You really need earc from the TV for losses audio.

    • @swingingudders
      @swingingudders Год назад

      Sounds like a similar problem I had, my onkyo was supported atmos and I couldn't justify buying a new AVR with earc (or hdmi 2.1 which is apparently problematic). With this device, you use earc out from your TV, audio is maintained but the video is converted to a black 720p image (reducing bandwidth) so your standard hdmi on your AVR will receive full quality audio. And CEC also works somehow so you can adjust AVR volume with your TV remote. Make sure you use good hdmi cables and don't use ARC on your AVR, just standard hdmi

      Hi, I have another couple of vids which goes through how to connect the device. But it's just a standard hdmi from the earc extractor to your reciever... You should not use the arc port on your reciever if it has one, just standard hdmi in. Standard hdmi is fine as the video has been removed, and you even get cec features (change volume with TV remote).

      Sorry for the late reply, I somehow missed this. I'm not exact sure what you mean. All you need to know is this device will deliver sound to your reciever via hdmi. Just select the appropriate hdmi source on your reciever menu and you should hear the audio. Sorry if this is not what you mean, I didn't really understand the question.

      @@swingingudders thank you. but I found out how to use this device. hdmi earc, from the extractor the hdmi cable goes to the tv to the earc input, next to it in the extractor there is only hdmi audio (that output just puzzled me where it goes) it goes to the receiver (mine is onkyo tx nr555) to any hdmi input, and it is not necessary to hdmi arc output, (nothing is inserted into that) and then it is selected only on the receiver in that hdmi input that hdmi is included, for example in hdmi pc in, and on the other on the side of the extractor, there is a usb for power supply and an hdmi source (lap top, desktop pc, smart android box) and there is an hdmi device that will give sound, and that's all, and it all works very well, you just need to use a certified 2.0 hdmi cables. I'm also very satisfied with this extractor, and now Dolby D, Dolby D+, Dolby Atmos appeared on my TV.. when I play 4k movies on my computer, if I didn't write something well, or if something doesn't make sense, that is because I'm from Serbia and I don't know much English and now I used google translate, sorry for that, but I hope I helped someone, k he struggled like me, because he didn't understand everything about the connection

      Are you saying your amp doesn't work at all with standard hdmi? You should still get standard non ARC/earc audio. This device will basically just accept the earc information, convert the video into a black 720p image and output that video and audio to your standard hdmi amp. But if your TV isn't working with your amp via standard hdmi there maybe another issue or setting to check?

    Hello! Thanks for the video! I bought this and I now can get multichannel PCM audio from my PS5, but the issue is that it doesn't seem like I can use my receiver's output HDMI anymore. I also have an Onkyo and I have devices plugged in my Onky (HDMI, Component and Composite) so I'd like to be able to connect the output of the Onkyo back into the TV without having to unplug cables everytime. Did you encounter the same problem? Thank you!!

      That's the first I've heard of that issue, your hdmi output just no longer works at all? To be honest I don't use hdmi out on my onkyo anymore as I need my xbox to go direct to the TV for hdmi 2.1 features, and everything else I do on the tv. I'd make sure you haven't accidentally wired it up wrong, and I'd also try start over and add one thing at a time. Oh, and make sure this device is not going into the arc port... Just standard hdmi in. Hope you get it sorted.
