The Secret to Mastering High Contrast Black & White Photography (For Beginners)
Thanks and thought provoking. I will be in Namibia in March and the dessert scapes and intense light might provide intersting opportunitiesa. My 2 primes will be Fuji APSC 8mm and 23mm. I have the NIK filters so any thoughts on using the Silver Efex LR plugin?
Thanks for the comment, Martin! Namibia sounds like an amazing place for black-and-white photography, especially with the intense light and unique desert landscapes. I have to admit, I’m not familiar with the Fuji APSC primes or the Silver Efex plugin you mentioned, but they sound like powerful tools for the kind of work you’re planning. I’d love to hear how they perform and see the results from your trip-sounds like a fantastic opportunity to capture something really special!

I’ve always had a fascination with photography, but I barely started so I’m not sure how much to charge while building a portfolio.
In my opinion when you’re just starting and don’t yet have a portfolio, it’s worth considering offering a few free sessions to build experience and showcase your work. Free sessions allow you to experiment, develop confidence, and create a diverse portfolio that will help attract paying clients in the future. Once you’ve gained some experience and have a few examples of your work, you can transition into charging modest rates. Many beginner photographers start with a range of $50-$150 per session, which helps cover basic costs (like time, editing, and equipment) while remaining affordable for potential clients. This approach balances building your skills and establishing the value of your work as you grow.
Good video. I tried but will have to practice more. I also find that the camera brightens the pictures too much. But, I will try a lower maximum iso when using auto iso. I will watch it again, well presented 👍🏻
Thank you for watching and I’m glad to hear you’re experimenting with the techniques. While Auto ISO can be convenient in certain situations, for night photography, I usually shoot in manual ISO for better control over noise and exposure. Keep practicing, and feel free to revisit the video anytime-let me know if you have any other questions or need more tips!
Thank you, Alvin. Your tutorial and tips were on point. I struggle with night photography, and your tips and advice have answered many of my issues. Unlike many other videos that use unnecessary campy ab-libs (that I usually end within seconds), you get right to the point. I appreciate that. You have a new subscriber! :)

This is an absolutely first class night photography tutorial Alvin. You couldn't have put it together any better. Top work!
Thank you, Mike. I really appreciate your kind words-it means a lot to hear that the tutorial hit the mark for you. I’m glad you found it helpful!
This was very helpful to someone like myself who is just starting out and trying to find my legs. I currently work an overnight shift and I typically don’t get to shoot in the daytime. Out of All the low light videos yours has been the best for explaining the gear, settings, and post processing. I can’t wait to put this into practice
Thank you for sharing this-it really means a lot to know the video was helpful to you. Working overnight and not having much time to shoot during the day is definitely a challenge, so I’m glad the tips resonated and gave you something you can use.
I will!!!!
Well done one of the best videos I have seen on You Tube. Congratulations

High iso allows more light to reach the sensor ?
I appreciate the comment. No, it doesn’t. It’s a common misconception-one I held myself until recently. A few weeks ago, @mariuszh4611 clarified that increasing ISO doesn’t allow more light to reach the sensor; instead, it amplifies the signal from the light already captured. This distinction was an important one for me to learn, and I’m glad to share it here to help clarify for anyone who might have the same question or misconception.
Hello SIr, really comprehensive explanation that is actually understandable. May I ask what is your camera please?
Hi Martin, thank you for the feedback. I’m glad the content was clear and useful for you. I currently use a Nikon Z7II, and Nikon Z6.
I am a Network engineer by day and a Z6ii hobbyist by night and day. Thank you for the tutorial and tips, it is concise and straight to the point without the unnecessary ambiguities.
I really appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts. It’s always great to connect with others who are passionate about photography. The Z6ii is a fantastic tool-wishing you all the best as you keep exploring and creating!
The background music was not in the background. I couldn't go past about 1m55s. Sidechain compression (ducking) is your friend.
Thank you for the feedback! I completely understand where you’re coming from. This is a known issue with that particular video, and unfortunately, it’s not something I can correct at this point. However, I’ve since made adjustments to the background music in all videos created after this one, ensuring it stays balanced and doesn’t overpower the dialogue. I appreciate your understanding and your input-it’s always helpful!
Bro. Im from DFW too. You have to also be careful out there at night, because Dallas aint that safe. Especially if you out there trying to get a shot of the skyline.
Thanks for the heads-up, bro! Safety is always a priority, no matter where you’re shooting, but I try to stay prepared and aware wherever I go. Dallas has some amazing spots, and being cautious just comes with the territory of chasing those perfect shots.
Phenomenal instructor!!! Awesome video!!!
@@anthonywright5141 Thank you! Glad you found the content helpful.
Really a helpful video, thank you! Only the music in the background, which contributes nothing to the content, is a bit ‘annoying’ in the long run... Health and peace and always ‘good light’, Lutz
Thinking about doing some promotional shots for my friends bigfoot hunting business where theyll be out at night and with a flashlight. Have any tips?
That sounds like a cool project! Shooting at night with flashlights can definitely create an awesome vibe. A few quick tips: use a tripod to keep your shots steady, especially for long exposures. Play with the flashlight to create shadows or partially light your subject for a mysterious effect. Long exposures can make cool light trails if the flashlight moves. Keep your ISO high enough to capture enough light but not so high that noise becomes a problem. You might want to bring a small portable light to fill in shadows if needed without overpowering the flashlight. Experiment with low angles or shooting through bushes for that “in the wilderness” look. In editing, you could use cooler tones or muted greens to give it that nighttime hunting vibe. Would love to see how it turns out-sounds like a fun shoot!
Well said

@@paultrunfull3324 Very much appreciated. That’s pretty much my goal …. to remain consistent, concise, and to ensure that what i’m delivering is correct! Thank you for taking the time to watch.
I don’t like to edit my images. Plus I like to see the images in B&W in real time. My camera gives me a choice of different profiles. I shoot in jpeg. An alternative is to shoot in jpeg and raw. This way I’m seeing the image in B&W plus get a color negative. The best of both worlds. Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)
That’s a great solution! Shooting in both JPEG and RAW gives you so much versatility. You get the convenience of ready-to-use JPEGs with your preferred B&W look, while the RAW files act as a safety net in case you want to experiment with editing later or need a color version. It’s definitely the best of both worlds and keeps your options open!
Excellent tutorial. Concise and very informative without extra fluff. Thank you!

Thank you!! And welcome aboard.
Informative video. I love to shoot at night. I mostly shoot the milky way but it's have done some street photography at night. One thing about ISO though. ISO doesn't change the sensitivity of the sensor. ISO is applied after the photo is taken. Noise is the absence of light and is always present when there's not light. When the ISO is raised the noise is amplified with the light. It works similarly to a microbiology when you turn the gain up to be able to hear someone who speaks softly. Ago off a sudden you can hear the crackle and popping in the background. I'm the film days the ISO was from the crystals in the film so having a higher ISO film actually increased the sensitivity of the film. The crystals absorbed photons. The more crystals there were the higher the ISO. It also created more grain. My go to lens for the milky way is my 20mm f/ 1.8 lens. I usually stop it down to f/2.8 to get sharper stars and less vignetting. I love my 24-70mm at night too. I can use it for street or milky way. The stars are sharp with that lens. Nikon is doing great things with their z lenses.
Wow!! Incredible comment. Thanks for sharing, Carl! Your explanation of ISO really helped expand my understanding, especially the analogy to gain in microbiology-that’s such a clear way to think about it. I also found the point about ISO in the film days fascinating, with the crystals absorbing photons and higher ISO films actually being more sensitive. That adds a lot of historical context to how ISO works today. I appreciate your thoughtful and detailed comment-it’s always great to learn something new!
Superb 👍😍👍

You're a great communicator, teacher, college professor or police office? Your Pro Tip at 10:57 on the "500 Rule" is for full frame cameras. Those with a crop sensors say Sony 6700 has a 1.5 crop, so a 24mm lens X 1.5 = 36mm then divide 500 by 36 for 13.89 seconds. Great video, cheer's from Vancouver Canada.
Thank you for the kind words! I always aim to present material the way I’d want to hear it myself, so it’s great to know it resonates. Your example with the Sony 6700 is spot on and incredibly useful for crop-sensor users. Cheers to you in Vancouver, Canada!
