Rolling Ball Sculpture inside a glass cabinet - Story 83
Просмотров 1,7 тыс.3 месяца назад
I built this rolling ball sculpture inside an antique pine and glass cabinet. The hardest part was the lack of access becuase only the front door was removable. The balls are one inch (25mm), the copper wire is a mix of 1.6mm and 2.0mm. The whole design and build process is documented on the RBS7 playlist. 🌈 Playlist: ruclips.net/p/PL82YuM8MZn3qsin-dSd5hWG-rwkdEsMSH Don't forget to subscribe so...

Mr Copper Gravity, hello. I'm a huge fan of your work. I literally watch all your videos for their beauty, skill and fun. It's nice to see you working in the Short format videos now. Can't wait to see the full story behind this pyramid. This sculpture makes me want to listen to Coldplay for some reason.... ;-p
Thanks! Maybe all the balls should be yellow. 💛💛💛
@@CopperGravity Haha, yes and with flashing lights
cool
Nice shape,Im a big fan of pyramids, have you noticed the second ball queuing for the lift is hitting the coil pushing it up off the track
Very cool prehaps the rocker switch could be duel switch so it means not havein to continues reset the rocker
Thanks. Once all routes down are built, the rockers will no longer need any resetting. Cheers.
Oh wow, that's fab!!! ❤
Thanks. 🙏
When you have yourself, your fuel, with everything in the back, how much does it weigh? Just interested to know. Looks like a great little getaway van for the odd night out, for me, photogrpaphing the night sky in some remote wilderness. I am not light. I weigh 14 stone. I would need to fill it right up with fuel. I have a couple of Bluetti power banks, an inverter, a laptop, camera gear and a little gas stove. All things together, like food, clothes, boots, water, all the things to survive for a few days. Is the maximum carrying capacity about 900-950kg? I know it's the best part of a metric tonne, I would just need to be sure is all.
Hiya. I never weighed my van before, during or after. But these are built for builders and their materials and although the fuel economy gets worse with weight, they really won’t struggle with anyone who goes off camping.
Where do you get your wire from? And where did you get that multi-arch plate thing from? Excellent coaster, as always!
Thanks for the compliments! I use www.wires.co.uk for my wire. And i designed and made the bending jig myself.
amazing and so relaxing to watch!
Glad you enjoyed it!
thank you very much the detailed information about the track comparison that i think i will do CMD track instead of CIC to CMD(checked some video but seem not so easy to manage as seem so risky) and CMD to Ben Nevis also pretty although a bit longer.
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you for sharing your process. I have added “Making a marble race” to my someday list.
Thank you so much!!! I thought it was going to be tedious❤❤😊😊
Glad I could help! ✅
Ian... I've been a bit obsessed with the Chebyshev ball raiser and have pretty much copied it for my first ever RBS attempt. Currently learning the ropes with the resistance unit (a lesson in being patient with myself). It's a wall mounted piece and I'll send you a link once I get it done (someday). Anyway... thanks for sharing your methods!
Good luck with it all! 👍👍
Hi I love your channel and have started making marble runs of my own. You make it look so easy but it is not, but I am slowly getting there. 😅 Can you please tell me where you buy the replacement (cheaper ones) carbon tips from, I have the same resistance soldering iron. Many thanks 🙏 keep on posting I love it!
Hi. I found some on UK supplier website: GLSED.co.uk Good luck and thanks for the comment.
@@CopperGravity Thanks.
Dude, I was so blown away by your amazing skills in putting this together. You make it look easy... and I know its not! I wish I could afford one of these, as they are true works of art but sadly my currency is very weak versus the USD/GBP.
Thank you so much for your super kind comments. Very appreciated 🙏🙏✅🙏🙏
That loading system, I think I spent the first couple of minutes just marveling at that genius. Great build design.
Thank you very much!
WOW … AMAZING TIP .. I WAS SUFFERING 😅… HOW ASBOUT THE THICKER WIRE ? 3MM THICKNESS … WILLL IT WORK
Maybe. I’ve only tried copper wires up to 2mm.
Is the music from Wintergarten?
Hi, not this time. This song is Silent Story Unfolding by Sight of Wonders. I'll add this info to the video description.
I'm a retired aerospace engineer, and I spent a few years after I retired designing and building backyard roller coasters with my grandkids. I looked at a loop, and did the calculations in a spreadsheet. I made a video about loops and put it on my RUclips channel, but never made a loop, as the forces and accelerations were too high for my little grandkids. I documented all four of my backyard roller coasters in videos on my channel, and wrote two ebooks I'd be glad to gift you if you contact me. You point out that your coaster, in practice, needed a lot higher hill than the physics equations predicted. I suspect that when the ball is in the loop and under high centripetal acceleration forces (a = v^2/r), they are high enough to spread the track rails and you get extra mechanical friction. You might try more cross ties so the track is stiffer and see if it goes faster? Plus, aerodynamic drag goes up with velocity to the 3rd power, but it's a sphere so the air friction should be low. I believe that once you can characterize your ball drag on a track as a function of speed and accelerations, you could predict with some accuracy your performance before you build. I have a spreadsheet which does this, I'd be glad to share it. I think it is still available for free at backyardrollercoasters.org. And a clothoid loop, with large radius at the run-in and run-out, and smaller radius at the top, will work better than a single radius loop. You need upwards force at the top of the loop, and a smaller radius will increase that centripetal force. I just bought the equipment on on of your videos, and hope to get into this fascinating hobby. Thanks for the videos and instruction.
Hi Paul. Thanks for this. Looks and sounds fantastic. Please could you edit the link as I think it’s missing an “s”. Cheers Ian.
@@CopperGravity Thanks!
Fantastic video
Thanks! 😃
You said you no longer use flux, what do you use now?
Hi. No flux. Just copper wire and solder. Much less mess to clean up. The joint does a bit black but very quickly polishes up with 0000 grade wire wool.
What is the length of the back of the van ???
Hi. It’s 1.9m which is just enough for the bed to squeeze in.
How can I sleep... 1,94 m. ?
@@CopperGravityHow can I sleep... 1,94 m.
Hi. It’s up to you to find a solution that fits you. Maybe a longer van or admit that you may be a bit squashed in. For me, I was not too tall and I really wanted a small van.
That's wonderful! ❤
Thank you! 😊
Fantastic what a great RBS!! ❤
We agree!
What kind of soldering iron does he use?
Hi. Resistance Solder. There is a video link in the description below. 👇
I love the bending jig. You're getting really slick curves, plus it's quite pleasant to look at. It's nice seeing your channel grow!
Thanks 👍
Clicked because autism. Stayed because autism.
Simply amazing. I’d like to see this with some soothing music and maybe slow motion close-ups at times. Awesome work!
Thank you very much!
It's so refreshing to see someone do a sensible conversion that proves you don't need a whole run of kitchen cupboards, a full cooker, fridge, etc etc etc!!! Just install what you'll need, just the basics! You won't be cooking full meals, guaranteed! After all, you're on holiday, so eat out, buy takeaways, eat junk!! I'm definitely doing this with my next car, probably a Ford Galaxy, or very similar, & like this conversion, mine will be just a simple, uncomplicated sometimes van/or car/or camper, but just remembering that important acronym, K.I.S.S. Keep It Simple, Stupid!! 🤣🤣🤣
Yes James. Exactly. This van is still going strong and is currently empty due to recently moving a piano. I also love proper little homes and if I lived in a van I would do something more permanent. But as a hobby camper this is a great option. Good luck with yours. Ian
Once again a very nice project. I'm already looking forward to the next one.
Thank you. 🙏
Background music is too loud and annoying
Thanks. I know. It’s way too loud. I’m sorry.
Outstanding
Thanks very much. 👍
Nicely done, however...you have to re-visit that motor and clunky switch panel, these need to be cleaned up. Put a much smaller motor at the top so the bottom is clean and uncluttered.
Thanks for the idea.
This unlocked a forgotten memory from my childhood! There's a giant Gravitram sculpture by Shab Levy that's been at the Kentucky Science Center since the mid 80s
Thanks for the comment. 👍
That poor swan has seen some abuse 🥺
I’m so sorry swanny 🦢
It has to be a 200mm vertical height diff, which is not the same as the length along the track. As you angle the 200mm long track further and further away from vertical, the height difference will go lower and lower. The final track angle looks to be about 45 degrees, so your height diff is closer to 140mm; this is why your diameter had to be so much smaller.
Great maths. Thanks for the comments. Ian 🙏
I'm late to the party, but your choice of music is very appropriate.
Welcome. Love all his music. And engineering obvs. 😃
dove si comprano le sfere in metallo ?
Most of my materials are purchased online from Amazon or independent shops in my county.
BEAUTIFUL!!
Thank you! Cheers! 🫶
Is it possible to make a loop to loop sculpture.
Yes this can be done. ➰
Mesmerising :-)
Thanks for the comment. ✨👍✨
Congrats! Another creative and well built RBS. I am sure it is not as easy as you make it look...though do appreciate that your build videos do address some of the challenges that you face and always overcome. Maybe someday I'll find out just how tough it is to make one, we'll see.
Thanks Gary. Appreciate your comment. Good luck if you ever have a go. 🤞
I love your videos! So cool! I am looking into starting a similar hobby, but with 3d-printed tracks instead of copper tubing. I have a couple questions. What type of soldering iron do you use? It doesn't look like a typical iron is why I ask. My other question is, where do you source the sides of your enclosures? Are they glass? Plastic? Are they from a local shop or amazon? Thanks!
Hi. I use a resistance solder iron and I have a video (link in description). The vintage cabinet came with glass sides. 👋
Awesome work! I want to build one. Would it help to have a variety of paired inner and outer round dies?
Nice idea. Good luck with it if you have a go. ✨🤞✨
Very nice, subscribed ❤
Thanks for the sub and kind comment. 🙏
It turned out great. Very smooth and lots of motion. Congratulations on yet another piece of art
Thank you very much!
Nice work!
Thanks very much. 👍
I hope you get over a million views on this, because the skill and time you've put into creating such a stunning piece will be worth it.
Thanks for the comment. Very appreciated. 🙏
One thing I've never seen anyone do on these rolling ball sculptures is place little chimes or bells along the tracks for the balls to ring as they go down. If you are really clever you can even make them play a tune. That could be fun to see (and hear) and a distraction to the usual rattling of the metal... Who knows? Great work on this one! Watched all the episodes!
Hi. It’s done quite a lot actually. (I did a bell on RBS5. Also, go to Wintergarten and watch his most popular videos.
@@CopperGravityI think that you mean Wintergatan...
