Joseph Kreiss Photography - Embrace the Grain
Добавлен 10 янв 2015
This is the story of a seasoned professional photojournalist with some forty-plus years of work in the news business, who cut his photographic teeth as a high school yearbook and college newspaper photographer with his very first Nikon - a silver and black Nikon Photomic F 35mm film camera (Which I still owns, btw).
As with many shooters, old and young, the love and mystique of film cameras and film photography is coming back into "hipness!"
I had bought a 1970s Zorki 4 Russian-made 35mm rangefinder, the pride of the Motherland at the time. After shooting with this old Russian, I just wasn't happy. So I sold off some old 35mm cameras and the Zorki and purchased a camera made the year I was born - 1955. Let me introduce my beautiful Nikon S2 rangefinder!
This is a vintage film camera diary, of sorts, as you are welcomed to follow along on this photographic journey documenting the ups and downs of shooting with a vintage Nikon, as well as with my everyday Fujifilm cameras!
Thanks!

ZORKI 4 - Introducing my NEW Vintage Camera Channel "Travels with Zorki."
My main film camera is a Leica M3, 50mm Summicron, bought in 1967! 57 years ago! thats vintage.. I use digital but used and older cameras only!
Very nice theme, and very enjoyable series….thank you! Over the last 50 years of my photo journey i have spent a small fortune on new and “better” equipment which resulted no increase in my photo quality, and just increased my frustration at times. I lived with, and loved my primes for many years. I believe they made me a much better photographer. Today in my advanced and lazy years my one camera/one lens consists of my favorite fuji body and an 18-50 zoom, which works for me. I naturally like to shoot wide, but sometimes i need a bit more reach and compression, and a little zoom makes my kit a bit easier to pack. As lifelong a resident of Michigan i loved your journey, as it brings back fond memories. I look forward to your future journeys.
This video is again proofing the fact, that the Xpro1 is a fine camera and that you don‘t need a ton of the newest gear to take great pictures as long as you are out on the road finding nice places and as long as you now what you are doing. Thanks again for taking us with you on your photographic journey. As far as my own lens choice is concerned: when i go only with one lens, i use a TTartisan 27 mm f2.8 on my Xpro1. It‘s affordable, a pancake lens and a little wider. Unfortunately i am only „brave“ enough to use this one-camera-one-lens approach when i do street photography in my hometown Vienna. But ya, maybe i should take the inspiration … 😊
I know what you're saying about lens choices! If I’m shooting in an urban setting, I’ll usually stick the 23mm f/2 on my X-Pro2, and car shows seem to be best with the 35mm f/2 - arguably the best lens of the bunch! If I’m not sure, the 16mm f/2.8 goes with me - there’s always cropping!!! I’m looking forward to the S2 episode. I’ve been out with mine recently and have had a ball! 😁
Enjoyed your travel video and photography. Great subjects and compositions. Keep it up.
Unfortunately i am somewhat addicted to the instant gratification of digital photography and appreciate, that i am not dependent on a photo development lab like we all was at the time, when i started taking photos, what was approximately half a century ago. But as a child of the cold war period i am still fascinated by these „ancient“ soviet machines. They are indeed beautiful and you feel somewhat the touch of the hands that made them, the pride and joy of its first owner and the fact that you can still use them, shows how great they were. Modern cameras like my Fuji XH2 are easier to use, more efficient, but i also own a Xpro1 like the one you took on your journey this year and it has much more soul. Since you like the same elderly cameras as i do, i am looking forward to your videos. Greetings from the center of Europe. 🫶
For a red filter simulation, I would think that chair Would be much darker. 50mm Full frame equivalent is a good general travel lens.
Nice video! The sad part of Zorki and Kiev cameras crappy quality control. Ah! You say not fair to compare to Leica! HaHa! My new in box Leica M3 11er.. arrived with 3 signatures on guaranty. SMALL problem. NO F****G rngfdr! Nothing Zero.Zip! A week later it was returned as we had full service facility. So forget Leica! Nikon or Canon or Pentax would have sent another box! But when they work, Zorki is fine! The rangefinder miserable compared to Leica. same as Canon RF.
How did you get that eyecup on your viewfinder? I’ve been looking for that for my x-pro2 for a long time.. Nice video.
If I remember correctly it’s an older Nikon one that fits the round threaded viewfinder.
I have been photographing using canon 35 f2 lens for almost thirty years.
I had the chance a few years ago to get myself a second hand Fuji XPro1 with a Zeiss Touit 32mm/1.8 for €400 ($447) I hardly used it but after seeing your video I know what I will carry daily beside my id, drivers license and wallet. Thnx for your wake-up call!!! Grtz from the Netherlands (EU) and may God bless you the coming 4 years.
On the garage with the red chair you have taken it red filte Sim all that does is lighten up the chair but of course since took raw you try different filters in post I always shoot raw ans jpeg on my fuji xt20 with a kamlan 21mm lens Good shots I've been to door county and walked out to that lighthouse
Soviet cameras are the best, what a shame
What a wonderful video presentation! This is my first time viewing of your video content. I must say that it t is very entertaining and very wholesome. . I cannot wait to view more of your video content. 😊
I'm so glad you enjoyed the video! I hope you stick around for more!
Very cool! nice SHOTS!!
Thank you for watching and commenting!
I enjoy traveling with my first camera, Canon A-1 with 50mm lens. Always entertaining when I zone focus and ask someone to take my picture, they look on the back and nothing pops up. . .
That is hilarious and can only happen with a film camera!!!
Nice one Joe! Loved the B&W shot on the beach. It really tells a story
Your equipment, lighting, framing etc. are all fine. Your subject matter, however, is unremarkable. These are the kind of images that you yourself would probably not even wish to revisit after a couple of weeks, much less would others be interested in seeing them even for the first time. Harsh criticism I know, but I say it in the spirit of pushing you towards more meaningful work. You clearly have the knowledge, an eye for light and framing and the flexibility to travel and seek out good work. Now you need to develop the discipline to only create (or perhaps only share) work that is meaningful. If this work is meaningful to you, then I withdraw my remark. You cannot please everyone of course, but having already gone through the stage of shooting photos of statues in my early days and then having gone through a phase of asking myself why the hell I made those images, I can share with you the conclusion that it was simply for the enjoyment of hearing the shutter click and not at all for the intention of creating something worth seeing later. Good luck, and keep shooting.
Thanks for your critic. Since I have no idea who you are, or what your photo "credentials" are, I will briefly respond. These images that part of this video, or any of the videos that appear in my videos, are not for a major gallery show, or public display. But these are images that will are memories of a month of travel in our van, exploring a region of the Great Lakes we haven't visited yet. You might think anything from the Midwest is "unremarkable," but I find beauty in the lakes, small towns, corn fields and the people that surround us. This area is worthy of documenting. As with all creative "art," it's all a matter of personal preference of likes and dislikes. These travel photos are shared with viewers, but as with my other RUclips channel, it's more of a documentary of our life, a home movie if you will, where not every frame is a "banger," but as a whole, they form a total picture of memories. As with anyone posting their "life" on social media, my hope is that my little photo channel will mildly entertain and hopefully pass along any knowledge and experiences I've gathered over my 45 year photography career.
@@josephkreissphotography please don’t pay attention to these experts, your photos and content was superb. I also have a background in photojournalism, and your documentary skills are fine, and I enjoyed it much. That fellow should unsubscribe if you don’t meet his expectations , and i will subscribe to fill the blank, as you meet mine. Good luck.
Quite a toy😃
How expensive was it to develop the film and how about the shipping cost of the negatives? I want to get back into film, but developing film locally in Virginia is very expensive. Separe fees for developing and then the printing has an extra fee. ( unlike in the old days that it was a single price.)Thank you!
I've never stopped shooting film. All do I don't shoot it professionaly since some 25 years, but I still shoot it, at least for fun. And to keep all my film cameras running. Course if you don't, the greese inside it will became stiff and than you have a CLE on your hands. I even recently dusted off my developing equipment recently, that I bought new. Back in 1987. Yeah, I'm old...
I absolutely adore my S2! What a wonderful little gem of a camera! I had an original S model and really appreciate the upgrades on the S2. The advance lever, takeup crank and larger, brighter rangefinder really make for a more modern, easy to live with package. The 50mm 1.4 Nikkor lens is a real stunner. So much cheaper than a Leica of the same vintage with stunning results. I can't ever see giving this one up!
@@vivangreco1710 I agree with you 100 percent! Can it get any better with the S3, S4 or SP? I think I might want to get a 1.4 50 at some point but, unlike a camera that views the world through the lens, is a faster lens really that necessary other then in low light situations? It is a beautiful piece of equipment!
My missing Nikon camera I have all the F series don’t own the range finder
Still have the Nikon S2 I bought in high school in the early '60s with 50mm and 135mm. When I was very young we rented out our back two acres - corn one year and soybeans the next year.
Bro, what was that music!? Goddamn set my heart on faaayyaaaaa !
Hey Joseph, you've managed to get some good shots out of the S2. As part of my nikon collection I've got an S2 and a SP I once tried the SP and found out it wasn't my thing so I don't think I'll ever use the S2. If it really has to be a rangefinder the canons are the once i like the most with the leica M's as a close second.
Thanks for your comment! Appreciate it very much!
I currently own a Leica barnack IIIf, but I've been eyeing out the S2 for a while since they're both in the same price range where I live. But the focusing on the S2 is not appetizing for me, especially coming from rangefinder lenses with tabs that offer fast focusing on the street. What do you think of the focusing knob system? The camera really does look gorgeous!
Hey, thanks for your comment! To be honest I am still learning to work the focus and get super used to the feel of this piece of equipment since it’s the same but different from my other cameras. I use the Fujifilm digital “rangefinder-style” cameras so I already have the feel of those bodies. My original Nikon F that I’ve owned since new is slightly different in terms of grip and finger placement. I’m planning on doing a few videos with this camera in the future. Thanks for watching!
Oh that last picture at 11:44 was just stunning!
Thank you so much! Walked out our front door and saw the clouds. Ran back in and grabbed the camera found the framing and banged of one frame. Some times that’s when the best images are found!! Thank for watching and commenting!
And the satelite dish is a paid actor 😂
The Nikon, Contax, and Kiev rangefinder cameras have a neat zone-focusing trick with the little focus wheel on top. Count the number of "turns" where a turn is one drag of your fingertip all the way across from one side of the wheel to the other. Start with the lens at infinity. Now, the number of turns give you useful distances: 1 turn = across the street, 2 turns = across the room, 3 turns = six feet away, and 4+ turns = up close. Taking a photo of someone across the room? Turn-turn-snap, and the turns can be easily completed while you're lifting the camera to your eye.
Wowzer what a great tip!!!! I’m going to try this. Thanks for sharing your focus trick and thanks for watching my videos! I really appreciate it.
I'm a former Midwesterner now in Saint Augustine FL. Owned a Nikon S back in the 60s and loved the 1:1 viewfinder. Moved on to the F series and still have an F, Ftn, F2, and D780. But I also own and dearly love the S2 that I recently bought from Japan on Ebay. Also own Contax IIa, Kiev IV, Yashica GSN, and even my old Canonete ql17 from the 80s. All are capable of great shots but I'm best with the S2 and F2. So happy to hear that you are enjoying the S2. I've also owned an S4 but for me the S2 handles the best.
Thanks for sharing your collection of amazing cameras! I think once you start working with the Nikon early on, it’s hard to use anything else that feels “right” for sure! Thanks for watching my videos. I appreciate it!!!
aka death in a plant. seed oils are as bad as it gets for your body. nice shots tho.
I have a few Nikon RFs and think they are great. I would suggest branching out they make some great 35mm lenses that are better than leica gear from the same era.
Awesome! Which Nikon RFs do you use? I’m thinking about getting a Nikkor 3.5cm wide angle lens since I usually use my wide angle lens as a normal lens on my digital cameras. Thanks for sharing and watching my videos!
@@josephkreissphotography I have most of the cameras and lenses save the very rare ones. Any 35 is good, I like the earlier f3.5 models but some claim they are suffer from inconsistent results across the lot.
@@andrewsmithphoto thanks for your input and for sharing. Also thanks for watching!!!!!
Hi Joseph, cameras Olympus OM-1 & 2, Canon EOS 3 and 10, Bronica ETRSi and Mamiya C330. As I'm in the UK B&W film is Ilford Pan F, FP4 or HP5. Colour film is Kodak, Portra (all speeds), Ektar, ColorPlus and Gold. Home develop B&W, colour to the lab.
Marvelous collection of great cameras! Is film as expensive across the pond as it is here in the United States? Thanks for sharing your info and watching my videos!!!
@@josephkreissphotography Assuming 1.3 USD to GBP. 35mm, 36 exposures - colour plus $13, Gold $14, Portra 400 $26. Ilford HP5 $10.70, Tri-X $18.20. 120 - slightly cheaper E.g. HP5 $9.10
@@andrewwilkin1923 seems pretty close to what we pay……thanks again!
I'm gonna wish you well but I have the odd feeling you'll end up physically beating the zorki by the end of this change
I just received a Nikon S. Body only. I have a Contax iia red dial with 4 lenses. I put the Contax 35mm lens on and it works fantastic. I can't use the other Contax lenses because of incompatibility between the mounts They don't focus properly.
I have the same situation too! Contax iia red dial and 4 lenses. Just got the Nikon S 3 weeks ago! I Love it!
I’m looking for a 3.5cm wide angle lens for my S2 but am hesitant about which non-Nikon lenses are actually compatible. I have to check out the Contax. Thanks for the suggestion.
@@josephkreissphotography The Contax is a great lens but a bit spendy. The 35mm DOF is large enough to make up for the difference on the Nikon. It's the only of the Contax that will work. Enjoy!
The pictures are really good !
Thank you so much!
Some really nice former Russian Kiev 4 lenses are out there, Contax bayonet. I have the Kiev 4A, similar to your Nikon, but with a selenium light meter built in. Enjoy.
Good choice, though I think the Kiev RF is more useful (more lenses to choose from). Yes, the Nikon is better made . The biggest downside of the Nikon RF are the eye-watering prices on the "collectible" lenses. Nikon collectors are almost as insane as Leica collectors.
I have a Mint black F2 and my work horse brassed F3hp that I have been shooting the last 10 years. Thinking about the F but with the eye level finder. I just bought a super nice Pentax SP. I have the SMC 55mm F1.8 and the Super Tak 35mm F3.5 for it. Honestly I bought it just because it is such a beautiful silver camera. I shot a roll of TRI-X 400 and made a few prints already. I also have one roll of Portra 160 in the Lab now. I took that roll shooting in Seattle using sunny 16 rule in the dark grey Seattle skies. Love your new Nikon Rangefinder I keep thinking of adding one to my collection.
That old T-Max held up really nicely. I shoot the FA, FG, F70, and would love to get an F90 one of these days. I rather like AF-D and AI-S glass. Your relationship with the Zorki is a bit like my first 135 camera in the 70's, a used 1950's Exakta Varex VX. I still have it. I never found a way to like that camera. I then bought a Pentax MX, which I instantly adored (and still have it) before discovering Nikon SLR's. Film and Nikon fit together like a hand in a glove for me.
Canon 7 greatest also
A Nikon S2 ... Very nice camera! I had one, briefly, as a loaner about 1970 or so, and made many good photos with it. I hope you enjoy it and it continues to give good service for years to come!
В Zorki-4 главное научиться видеть границы кадра. И жизнь покажется прекрасной.
I like Soviet lenses, hate the cameras. LTM lenses go to my Leicas, my Helios 44 goes on Canon SLR.
You spent good money on the Nikon when you couldda had a Kiev?!
😂
It's difficult to believe you got that camera for the 2 zorkies...
Well I did have to put in “some” of my own money to purchase!!😅
I prefer your Nikon F camera. It’s a lot more versatile with the lenses available, and easier to focus in difficult situations, and of course there are lighter Nikon camera bodies available.
I pretty much used Nikon cameras my entire professional career only to be priced out of the market for upgrading. The Fujifilm cameras have been great for the type of work I do nowadays. I even have a client who uses my Fujifilm digital files for billboards! Thanks for sharing and watching!
This Nikon is really good camera. I sold mine to get Leica m4 but still i have only good memories with it.
Nice photos. I am not a fan of rangefinders. I like the viewfinder above the lens.
