CSWA Sample Revolve Part
Просмотров 3442 месяца назад
The SolidWorks CSWA exam almost always has a part that requires a revolve, but the practice exam doesn't include one. This is a sample that is similar to parts I've seen on the actual exam so you can practice.
New Glitch in AutoCAD When Solving one of the Puzzlers
Просмотров 882 месяца назад
At one time the Defpoints layer was the only non-plot layer in AutoCAD. Old school users of AutoCAD would sometimes use the Defpoints layer that is created automatically when any dimension is inserted to hold the points used to define dimensions as a way of placing entities in a drawing that won't plot. For may years it has been possible to make any layer a non-plot layer, but occasionally an o...
Adding GD&T information to SolidWorks 2023 Drawings
Просмотров 4092 месяца назад
SolidWorks changed the way that Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing frames are created and applied in release 2023. It is far less intuitive than the earlier dialog box. I made this to show students in my Mechanical Design class how to use the new version to complete an introductory GD&T drawing.
SolidWorks Line Thickness and Hatch Problems
Просмотров 6604 месяца назад
CAD software always seems to have behaviors that might be operator error or might be glitches in the software. SolidWorks is no exception. Here are two problems one operator error, one a glitch that have cropped up in my classes from time to time. One involves line weights (thickness) changes that don't display correctly, the other involves changes to hatch patterns that don't take affect. I sh...

If you are trying to find an AutoSAVE file in AutoCAD, but can't find the AppData folder that is specified in the search path under AutoCAD Options, it's because the Windows default settings for viewing files are preventing it. Too scary for normal users, I guess. Here's how to fix that.
THANKS FROM 2024! ILL CHECK IT OUT! REALLY COOL YOUR GRANDFATHER PUG MONEY FOWN ON A TUCKER!! (It wasn’t made because the BIG POWERFUL CAR MAKERS OF THE TIME FELT THREATENED BY THE INVENTOR!! And one of them came out a few years ago with HIS CENTER HEAD LIGHT INNOVATION THAT FOLLOWED THE CAR LIGHTS & CLAIMED IT AS THERES! When NO! It was not!!
The Tucker wasn't on the floor a couple of weeks ago, but they still have it, so it will be back. Very cool collection. I took my 90 year old mother-in-law, and she loved it. Then I took my 11 year old grand nephew, and he loved it. You should go.
wonderful sir
Thank you. Glad you found it useful.
I have followed every step and checked it perfectly but then also in question 2 I didn't get the exact answer which you got (1st question is correct) can you please provide any solution ??
Not without seeing the model. The most common error people make on this part is assuming that both cylinders are the same dimension. One is based on X the other on Y. You might check that. If your answer is within 1% of the correct answer given, it would be considered correct on the exam. I have gotten the same answer each time I've gone through this practice exam for a class, so I think you probably overlooked something. You should also check for any under-defined sketches. If you have any, correct that and see if you get the right answer.
Thanks for the (- trick to find under defined sketches it was exactly what i was looking for for my project
You're welcome!
Thank you, The video was easy to understand
Glad it was helpful!
For CSWP, is this the pattern of questions asked? 3 questions with same figure and rest 2 questions with same figure?
Yes, but there will be more than one part to start with. But each part has multiple questions after editing. Part 2 of the exam has you opening and modifying existing parts and managing configurations as well. Part three involves creating fairly complex assemblies from existing parts and possibly parts you must make.
thnx alot pops
Any time sonny.
Thank you so much, I really strugled with this...
You're welcome!
Que deleite de este buen material, gracias maestros
You are very welcome. (Eres muy bienvenido)
Thanks u
Thank you so much, I learned a lot from your vidieo.
Glad it was helpful.
Thank you Dan, very useful for CST Import/Export "parametric"...
Glad it was helpful!
Pretty sure this was a final exam at some point around 2011.
It is actually from a project I assigned in my first class nearly 20 years ago based on an illustration in my favorite drafting textbook at the time that was illustrating conventions for section drawings that deviated from actual orthographic projection. But, yes, it certainly has elements of parts I've seen on the CSWA exam since. That's why I included it -- to make sure people are prepared for something like it since the practice exam doesn't have a revolved part. Each of the major projects assemblies I assign now have parts that require a revolve.
Perfect example of how small changes such as specific selections of sketch planes, use of offset geometry instead of manual sketching, and changes like extruding with an offset instead of in two directions at once (for the cylinders) actually results in a change of mass and the difference between the right and the wrong result. If you're off by a few grams or decimals in your answers - watch this end to end and make the changes in your methods checking the weight difference as you go.. Thanks again!
Thanks for your comments, and you're welcome.
This video helped me more than my actual teacher did. thanks!
Glad to hear that it was helpful. I'll have to watch it again. Don't be too hard on your actual teacher. I've gotten better at it over my 40 years in technical education, and composite profile is a bit tricky.
Brilliant
I will pass this along.
A shining star, a big heart, and, as ever a wonderful storyteller! Congratulations, Doctor Wood!
I will pass this on to her Alan. She still tells the story of appearing at your college and opening with "In Mexico, Maine, where I grew up, you couldn't find a single Mexican." Wonderful story-teller, for sure.
Congratulations Monica. I'm glad David prompted you to help that man.
I will pas this along.
Please can you explain how you made the first plane?
It seems pretty clear in the video. I created a reference plane corner-to-corner using the front plane and one corner to create a plane 45 degrees to the front, pivoting about the selected edge of that corner. Then I offset that plane using it to create another reference plane by entering the distance to the back of the boss on the top. I'm not sure what I could say that would clarify that, so I hope this helps.
Thank you so much!
You're welcome!
extremely helpful. thanks!
You're welcome!
618 IS NOT 628. check answer 5 again boss.
Corrected later in video
Great video, thanks.
You bet
Wouldn't it be easier to add a phantom line for the datum D aswell @ video 12 min mark? Or would that not comply with the some standard practice etc?
A phantom line can be used to treat two separate surfaces as a single datum surface, but it would not be standard for datum D. On the other hand, it would not be ambiguous.
Is there a reason why you didnt mirror the first tube to create the second tube and flip it 45degrees?
I don't think they are exactly the same, but if they are you could do that, but I think it might be more confusing for some people. But if that is the way that makes the most sense to you, no reason not to use it.
Your flying through this and i am following everystep. Thanks for this example.
You're very welcome.
Why not make the axle for the wheel to ride on first? Then you could create the spacer and the wheel off the outside of the axle and then the parts would not be joined when you create them because they are not created on the same edge surface.
I haven't reviewed this video in a while, so I'm not sure what you're referring to, but anything that makes the most sense to you is fine. I probably didn't think of it, but there may have been another reason.
Спасибо, полезная функция с таблицей, можно обойтись без экселя.
You're welcome or Пожалуйста.
hello, Abbot , what a material you present on these videos, very very good, just wondering where I can find the sample parts to print it out or download and practice , I have the student version at this moment , thank you very much
You can take the practice exam for free. It will include the parts for the assemblies as a zip file download. SOLIDWORKS.virtualtester.com/.
Thanks for infromative and straighforward explanation! Helped me with a project at work!
Great to hear.
I have been using Solidworks for around 3-4 years but still never this efficient !!
I appreciate the kind words. One advantage that I have in teaching software is that I don't have the deadlines that you have, so I can take as much time as I want trying out different approaches so I can pass them along to my students.
@@DanAbbott-SMCC It is evident in this video. Can you suggest some practice sheets for CSWP segment 1 and any reference material or video of yours for CSWP segment 2 & 3
The official practice exam has no questions like those on segment 2 and 3, which is odd, but I've been considering a video for each of them. I don't have too many students who take the CSWP, but I think it might be useful. In the meantime, SDK publishing has a prep guide written by the man who has been responsible for writing the certification exams for years. You can download files from their website once you purchase the book and that might help you.
@@DanAbbott-SMCC Thankyou I'll look into it. Have a good day ahead.
God bless you. I took my practice CWSA today in a lab and absolutely ate it for being away for unforeseen circumstances. They didn't teach us how to do it the way you have, but with prior understanding of solidworks and this example, I'm able to complete all the practice problems with relative ease
I'm glad it was helpful!
when i make the viewport and try to pan the part withint the rectangular box, the whole box pans with the part included
It sounds like you are still in paper space. To pan within a viewport, you need to activate that viewport by double-clicking inside the window before issuing the -PAN command.
Hello! How did you get the block pallet to dock to the right side of your workspace as I see in this video? I regularly insert blocks and for the life of me cannot find a way to place it there as you have. Thanks!
When you open a palette, there is a small gear icon at the top left side ribbon of the palette (any palette). I dock four on the left and two on the right. Select the gear and then check off three item: allow docking; anchor right (or left); auto-hide.
Thank you !!
You're welcome!
Hello Dan, I'm pretty sure that you can't access the Global variables while in the sketch is because SolidWorks needs to "save" the "part" in memory before you can use Global variables in it. Technically as you are in a new sketch and have not exited it for SolidWorks to do that. If you exit out of the sketch and then edit it you can use Global variables, you do not need to create a dimension and create a feature in the sketch before. Just exit the sketch and edit it again and then you have access to the Global variables :) Keep up the good work in these videos
Thanks for weighing in. I may not get to revising this one right away, but I will keep making videos for my students and making them public.
Thanks so much Dan for this
My pleasure!
We need the pulley please
Create a sketch with the cross section and revolve it. I have other videos showing how to do that.
Too many information in one video Pls can u do shorter videos for a particular topic eg lights thank u😊
Sorry, I do videos only when one of my classes needs one, and they are as long as necessary. You can find a lot of short videos on any subject though, so you should be able to find what you want.
@DanAbbott-SMCC hey great video. Did you ever figure out" FP"?
if i have a script that has all the command line steps to plot a dwg, how can i use core console to run the script and then save the pdf to a folder with the same dwg name then move to the next dwg in the folder and run the script again on multiple .dwg files
A script can run AutoLISP code if written correctly. That is the most effective way to plot to a PDF from each layout (I assume that you would want the PDF to be plotted from a layout and not from the model space tab, but you can do either.) If you execute AutoCAD from a batch file using the FOR function in DOS, you can go through each drawing file sequentially, cycle through the layouts, save a PDF file of each (turn off the "open PDF" option so it doesn't hang up after plotting), close the Core Console when done, and move on to the next DWG file.
I have a slightly different issue. I'm trying to simulate my work but it says "Result files not available, copy the correct result files to working directory and reopen the document"
I am not sure about this one, but it sounds like you may have changed the name or moved one or more files after running your simulation.
Outstanding clarity. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful.
Amazing video. Exceptional clarity. 100%.
Well, thank you for those kind words.
Some printer noise in the background. Sorry about that, but I needed to get this done for a class and I didn't want to interrupt the print.
IT TOOK ME A COMPLETE HOUR JUST GETTING TO ENDROADS IN GOOGLE TRYING TO SOLVE THIS, UNTIL I FOUND THIS VIDEO. THANKS!!
My pleasure. Annoying though, isn't it?
Simple and easy, thank you!
Glad it helped.
If you prefer to work in metric and (as shown in the video) it starts an imperial part, this can be fixed in the Default Templates tab in the options. You can do one of two things here: 1. Click the radio button that says "Prompt user to select document template" 2. Set your default part template that is setup for metric in the appropriate field.
I think the best solution is to created a series of template files so you can always just pick the correct template at the time you start a part, assembly, or drawing file. I have a video on template creation in this playlist.
Hi sir ,, Ive got a small issue in assembly for my solidwork project that I didn't find a solution ,, is there a possibility to join or contact you directly ?
If you are a student in one of my classes, come to a posted open session. If not, what is the small problem and I'll respond when I get a chance.
@@DanAbbott-SMCC 1- I'm not one of your students .. 2- my issue was I've got more than 1100 bolts , 1100 nuts , 2200 washers to assemblate by mate in my assembly
Is the problem getting all those fasteners into the assembly, or is it selecting them as a group to create an exploded configuration?
Thanks for the lesson
You're welcome.
I got 14216.51 grams for the first answer, there's nothing wrong with the drawing. What possibly could be the reason for this deviation?
If the answer isn't exact or within 1% of the answer provided, there is something wrong with the drawing. Check for any under-defined sketches, make sure you didn't have a typo when entering a dimension, and make sure you selected the correct starting and ending points for dimensions. Those are the most common errors people make when completing this practice exam. If after doing that you are still off by more than 1%, send me the part file to dabbott@smccme.edu and if I have time, I'll take a look.
Hi Dan I'm a self taught user and I never took teachings in the field, just figured stuff out on my own. I was wondering, you mentioned top down design in 13:05 , how does that differ from this workflow, have you any videos on it ? I'm really interested! Thanks!
There are a few other videos that deal with equations. Global variable are fairly straightforward, but the process can get fairly involved. You might find the video on tapers and that on configuration tables useful.
