What are you using for anode strap/band metal and where can I source it? What are you using for the anode clamp?
@@AB1Vampire I get metal on eBay, those are brass straps 0.5mm thick by 25mm wide. Copper works good also.
Have you listened to CB lately. It's like a psych ward!
@@kd5yut haven’t been on the radio much lately, spent a lot of time in the shop.
the amplifier looks nice
Thank you.
Where do you get your capacitor bank boards from?
I design and make my own boards. Thats a capacitor bank with integrated bleeder resistors.
Awesome build. I would like to get some more information about this build. Do you have the information on the guy making the tube sockets? I would like to buy one of these tubes. If you could please post the information on the tube socket. Thank you.
Sockets are not sold to the public yet. My supplier is in Ukraine and makes custom sockets for me and a few of my buddies.
@NeedleBender785 is it possible to purchase one? I would like to try & build this amp just like you. BTW great job on this build.
@@damong7276 Yes I use the most expensive caps in it. As i do in all my bulds. A fully assembled Cap and bleeder board is $250 I also have a rectifier board for $50. emai me sales@xelectroshop.com
A clean signal makes better contacts ! You want all the power on the frequency you want and within the bandwidth you want. A few extra watts does nothing if it is outside the channel you want. Just wasted power. Love the input and output networks. Nice wide straps ! Keep tube with in data sheet and it will last a long long time. Best for new old stock tubes light the filament with air flow only for like 24 HR . 160 meters will need more inductance on plate choke and glitch choke. And the tuner caps may need a padding cap to get in tune range. That why a lot of 160 meter amps have extra caps threw a switch contact on band switch. Just becomes more work and a bigger case . You could add swamping resistor for 100 watt radio . But most 100 watt radios will dial back to 60 watt with ease. better for the radio . 73
Thanks!
Very nice build! One of my goals is to build a mono tube like that ... Refurbishing a SB-220 at the moment... Its been a fun learning project... I have a SB-200 under my bench to do next... The biggest hurdle has been acquiring the proper test equipment to work with... My NANO VNA v2 has only been utilized for antenna builds... Tuning pass through it will be handy... I enjoy your content! Thank you! Saltshaker 762 de KF4LBG Northeast Florida

Hey Tony I've got a nice tested 4cx15000a tube available for sale or trade. Make a nice tsunami amp
I dont need one at the moment, but text or call NB757 in Boulder he might want it.
Nice build. What are the specs on the Chicago Plastics cap if ya don't mind me asking.
Ebay. But i removed it a day later and never used it again. A regular HV blocker works alot better. 10kv 3300pf (3.3nf)
Very nice tune , and some good data for multiband builds I would think 👍. 73’s to you in the Buckeye
Thanks!
tony , your comment about drive was a conversation i had with a friend and why he talked me into building a 4cx5k . and it eliminated having a driver. less coax and less failures in between the radio and the antenna. so when i get a chance to rebuild my station im going that direction . iven been enjoying your videos . thankyou for all the information .
@@chrisyanez2299 That’s a great project. I have a series of videos on my 4cx5000 build. Turned out really nice.
High drive amp?
100W in no more then about 150MAx
nice input circuit . 73

Are you going to "condition" the tube before giving it hv? Rumour has it these tubes require conditioning before use as they have been in storage for a long time. You can do it with filament supply on and a low voltage dc current limited supply. Google it. I am building a 2 tube gu43b all band amp myself. Thanks 👍
Yeah 24hr tube “burn in” I do on all Russian tubes. Highly recommended for those tubes. Can be a lot less or non for Eimac tubes.
I was proud of my little doorknob caps. Feelings of inadequacy are setting in. Great video! Very informative.
Thanks!
Great project. I am following along and learning.

Hello Needlebender! What tetrode for am, would you recommend that will do at least 1kw rms?
Gs35b single tube!
@@NeedleBender785oh ok, lastly what rms wattage would you expect from the 4cx800a?

What is the voltage to run this 110 or 220
120V outlet voltage
Hi Tony! It was very interesting. I'll watch it again and again. Thanks for explaining.
Glad you liked it!
Interesting tube ! A 5CX tube is a pentode . I can show you a old RCA transmitter with all glass tubes and it is grid drive output and the cathode is the modulation drive. Just another way to do AM. I seen screen modulated done. TETRODES are higher gain and more efficient . Continental has tube transmitters using IGBT transistors in PS modules. plate and screen . and the audio is put into both . some tridoes can run 0 bias like the 811A . Some amps like 30L1 and AL 811 made that way and have a bias mod to keep idle plate current lower for better tube life and less heat . Zener bias is ok. it does work and has been used for decades . But the circuits with IBJT is much better and stable throughout the operating range . Better regulation is cleaner signal. also allows to do tricks with tube with bias set to drive level. What a power saver . AL 572 amp has that basic circuit in it. When doing 50 KW AM it is a large drop in input power . Power from grid. Some great projects !! 73
Thanks again for a great comment! ~73s

Good to go 👍. Top quality building with the best parts for the best sound , gotta have it . Keep up the good work
I love HEC capacitors, it's all I use when available. Not only do they have the best specs, there more compact than most. I love a part that you can see and feel the quality as well. Thanks for locking in a commercial account 😎
Thanks!
That’s the real deal rite there for sure. Good caps I assure you.
Thanks!
Them caps look real nice ! The ones in a MW or AM transmitter are much bigger. Longer wavelength . and high RF amps. But that 50KW . Normally I work with 8877 and 3-500Z with 572/B style amps. Them blockers are easy to find, I have Murata ones and they hold up . also some Russian ones. But that in the 1.5 KW and under amps. Them blockers in SB 220 and SB 200 known to go bad. more so the red ones . They get moisture in them and they flash over . Any time I come across them ,I swap them out. They known to fail over time. BBI has a bubble gum test for them. I got the green ones in my SB 200 and they still good. Normally a plate blocker cap has DC ground in one side and plate DC volts on outher and the RF volts and RF amps. It is a hard working cap. They can do a lot of damage to amp when they fail . As they fail High Level RF can arc all around and could flash the tube. 73
Thanks for your input!
I used HEC HT59 as screen bypasses for my TH555A PA at work. I think I have 14 of them around the big tube sockets, two tube push pull 200 kW pulsed tubes at 2.8 MHz. They are paralleled with Kapton film bypasses, built into the Thales sockets for HF through VHF. For plate blockers I had HEC make custom very low inductance ceramic caps. About 6 inch diameter and 3/4 inch thick, they have a metal ring on both sides for contacts, and a wide copper strap is attacked with a lot of machine screws. The plate voltge is 15 kV DC. It's good that plate blockers don't have high RF voltage across them if properly sized to have low Xc. Then they only have to support holding off the DC with a small amount of RF ripple voltage across them. They do have to handle the RF current out of the plate into the first element of matching.
can you in box or message me,I am going to have a 3cx3000 built soon if you are interested

Great Video Tony,,we had alot of fun this year , can't wait to make some cool stuff in 2025 😎
those Russian tubes are nice... id love to build a box with 4 of them.
What are you using for coax jumpers? Both coax type and length please. Really dig your videos, you and NB757 …. Great art work! 73s
When I test I normally use 6ft. But amps that have a input tune adjustment make it to really have no affect to what length you use.
Good stuff 👏 👍
Nice job on that SB 220. Nice to see working with tetroids . They are more efficient and need less drive. I seen cathode drive on tetroids but that takes more drive . Their is some triodes that a designed to run in class B grounded grid . Like 811A . But they run hotter and not as clean . Some of the amps made that was have a bias mod to bring them into AB2 . making them cleaner and make less heat and better tube life. Adding a lo pass or band pass filter to input can really help clean up the signal on a amp. Mostly if radio is not so clean. the amp can help clean some of that up. This works on all RF amps. Tube or solid state. It them harmonics or out of band single gets to amp it will just amplify that signal as well as main single . this can make a dirty mess on output. In AM transmitters the RF is handled different on tubes. The grid can be the carrier drive, Ant the audio can injected into the cathode or even the screen grid or both .Or can be done thru the plate threw a transformer . know as a modulation transformer . Modern tube transmitters do the modulation threw the power supply and screen supply . Using like HV FETS or IGBT . What a power saver. No large audio single needed . A few stations do this like WBCQ and WMRI . They using tetroids as well. Some WWV transmitters are tetroids as well. Many of them tubes still in production today . Ukraine doing a lot for the radio habby ! The RigExpert antenna analyzers are based their . Some Nixie tubes are made their as well. I just got a shipment of tubes from Ukraine . They sell on eBay worldwide. 73
Thank you so much! I am excited to own such a great amp.
Evening time👋🏻
Nice rebuild , rca is the best
Very nice work . I really like having a keying circuit and RCA jack as well in my pill drivers . It makes them run so much smoother
Yes much better way to key the amp. Use PTT line. That keying circuit can be the weakest link in a amp. And shorten the life of relay . I use heil sound headset with either hand trigger or foot switch.Works great ! Just a simple box with DPDT relay and key amp and radio same time. That for radios with no PTT jack. Icom and others have a PTT line that you can adjust a delay if needed. You want you amp to key first and relay latch up then RF . No arcing of contacts . BBI did a great video showing that . Nice clean amp. 73
Best way to key a box is with a radio keying wire. Saves the relays also.
@@NeedleBender785 If radio does not have just make the circuit . easy done
