I absolutely get the complaints about the middle missions of MotS being a little meandering and having no effect on the plot, but for me? I just remember getting to explore the Star Wars Galaxy as Mara Jade, so I have ZERO complaints. 💜
I believe that dexterity is a thing for the sorcerer. Without a decent value here, he may be able to conjure flaming death, but fail to connect any hit at all.
I FOUND THE COW LEVEL.
If you only played anomaly do not say that anomaly is the best place to start with stalker bcs it is not. Also u corny af for that stalker jokes from 2008.
These are all great games I love them there's one I like a whole lot it was called Black
Would you ever do a vid on GAMMA? makes me feel like I can never go back to base anomaly. (nvm, just saw you are waiting for 1.0! might see the video soon then!)
5:25 volumetric lighting and fog were already part of the games.
57:10 I'm going to take a leaf out of KOTOR 1 and 2's library of force powers and say that it was either force stasis or force stun. Of course such powers are anachronistic seeing as they appear in a game that came out many years after JK2.
the back story is chilling, like the screams you hear for the first time in the cathedral. this game is timeless
Hal Life + Survival? I'm in!
I love these retrospectives you're doing, SHOC is always special to me. Also, Memories of the Zone is my favourite modpack for SHOC. Just the right amount of vanilla and spice. I say 70-30. Highly recommended to newcomers.
I remember myself holding a german games magazine in hand telling me that i could play as a Jedi. Learn about a new Jedi and Dark Jedi. I don´t think that any one growing up with todays overflow of "Star Wars" could understand the joy of getting something new in this awesome franchise.
50:36 I did fall asleep to this video, you don't have to call me out
I don't want Kyle ever to "return". They would just ruin his character, like they always do nowadays with reboots and so on. Fascinating analysis video btw!
Sadly, you’re right. I have no faith in Disney handling the IP. That trust was destroyed a while ago. Cheers, my friend 🍻
good video
How is this channel not bigger?
I’m tryin’ 😭
The title would be better without "2021"
Yeah, thanks for reminding me that I need to modify this title.
Sup. Good video.
This for me was the first Metroidvania that was neither Metroid or Castlevania. It will always hold a special place in my heart and it brings memories of my youth playing it and getting immersed in this unique world. So happy Nightdive Studios remastered this but also went the extra mile of including the cut content that couldn’t fit on either a cartridge, CD-ROM, or even a GD-ROM. Kudos to those fine programmers. 👍❤️😃
The cut content was surprisingly extensive. NightDive are consummate professionals when it comes to video game preservation, they do so with the utmost respect for the original game.
We want more marathon!!!!!
I hear you! Something planned later this year (or early next year).
I remember playing marathon back on Mac oS. That's all my grandparents owned back then.
Good times. Do you remember if music was off by default?
If that’s the remaster I’m seeing that looks real good I had the PlayStation version when it came out I had forgotten game till now
I believe the remaster was built upon the N64 version, but don’t quote me on that. It was pretty impressive for the day with the memory expansion installed.
The sword is relevant, but it is symbolic. I go through the intro video on my channel, where I try to explained the intro cinematic from a mythological lens.
Oh nice! I’ll check this out.
Lazarus did shatter the soulstone. That is why the warrior has to keep the demon contained within himself. Otherwise, the stone would be sufficient to keep Diablo at bay. The manuel is excellent I read the whole thing in a video on my channel, glad to see another manuel enjoyer. As I think, you've only scratched the surface of the mythological significance of Diablo 1.
The soulstone was inadequate, as Diablo was able to corrupt mortals from his prison which resulted in his release. I wouldn’t use that as the reason for the warrior’s decision, though it was certainly to try to contain the evil until he could offload it somewhere safe. Still an interesting gamble considering how easily others were corrupted, even when they had no direct contact with the soulstone. I love old Blizzard manuals, I used to read them cover to cover when I was a kid. The art made the elements pop in an evocative way. Oh, for sure, the video was never about the overarching mythology of Diablo, though that would be an interesting video. I’d be surprised if no-one has done it already.
Further to this, I’ve always liked the idea that Diablo’s final act was a subtle compulsion which causes the warrior to jam the stone into his forehead. Even in a fantasy setting, this act would be highly illogical and probably fatal unless you had explicit knowledge of what you were doing. Humans aren’t typically built to be receptacles for large foreign objects.
@HeyBlondieGamer no one yet has done it justice. It is no fault of yours though, your video is amoung the best i've seen. Though I will admit that my standard for analysis is very high, you have a great intuition for the mythology of the game. To your point about the soulstone, it would have been adequate given a few missing pieces. One of those pieces is the strength to spirit of Lazarus. The spirit of evil cannot be destroyed, and must be contained by vigilant sacrifice. The lack of Lazarus' will is a sign of the sin of the land. To your point about Diablo's action, I'd say it is apparant that the soulstone is broken and therefore something must be done to contain the demon. In this case it is a call to a higher order of being with self saceifice being the ultimate answer to Evil itself. I am about to record a video about Diablo 3 and then I would be honored to talk about this sometime, lets plan it out. I have a mic, please accept it.
@ClaymoreLinx I’m hardly an authority on Diablo, but I’d be happy to discuss D1 if you like.
22:55 - What do i think happens ? The same thing that happens in the beginning - you pass out and you go to the brainwashing room - every fake ending is just a psy attack that aims to knock you out so that the monolith troops can capture you and take you to the room where they do brainwashing with tv's (as seen in Clear Sky). If you listen to the jokes about controllers the stalkers talk around campfires - it's the same thing like with every fake ending. The controller makes you hallucinate so much in order to come close to you and kill you so that he can eat you or whatever. None of the faux endings are literal, it's just a extremely intense psy attack and illusion because the actual monolith is also a psy emitter. And it's also not wise for the Monolith faction to kill or completely brainwash potential new recruits, all the psy emitters are optimally trying to create new monolith recruits that are just conscious a bit more than the zombies. Strelok was already brainwashed so maybe he dies in this process or the c-consciousness just cranks that mind flayer setting to 10 because Strelok goes from being a small inconvenience to a man that almost exposes them and destroys them - so we don't see him being brainwashed again because the psy attacks from the monolith actually kill him - so the hallucination he sees is like a dream he gets to have - it's the last thing he experiences before he dies. It would go against the theme of - the humens where the real mutants all along, cane canis lupus or whatever - if suddenly theres magical stuff like golden doubloons turning into screws and the monolith has the ability to succ your soul out your pee pee. You know this is easy stuff and for a stalker master you claim to be you seem to be opening your ingame inventory to use healing items instead of using hotkeys - and your Sidorovich impression is quite bad so im gonna have to give you a 9/10 for this 3 part retrospective interview, sorry not sorry git gud scrub.
I did a playthrough of this game back in 2020 but stopped because of this level, I'm not gonna attempt to do another playthrough, but it's nice that a guide exists for this puzzle, I just wish it was there when I played it.
Maybe one day you’ll find the mojo to return and tackle it again.
I found the tribute to Jason court wery touching an beautiful. He is will allways be my Kyle katarn, and to be honest his performance of the role was my biggest role model as a youth. The quiet undertones of kindness determination and perseverance was what I picked up from Jasons performance. And the fun part is I had no Idea the guy is making wine nowadays, it's one of my hobbies since a decade back. 😂 Need to check his products out. Excellent essay on one of my favorite games of all time many thanks for the entertainment and education Blond'i.
His strength of character shone through in the performance, I think this is mostly overlooked by many. There’s a surprising amount of Jason in Katarn which is why he feels earnest and authentic.
Dude, this looks really neat! Thanks for pointing this one out!
No worries. Happy to co-op with you if you like 🤘
Everything about this game is just so original trilogy, even down to the lightsaber designs. I love it, and the idea that this was had probably some of the first live action scenes of Star Wars since the end of the OT movies and of post-OT in the actual universe makes it more special in my mind
The tone and setting were strong with this one. You’re right that it felt ‘original trilogy’, that’s arguably why it went over as well as it did.
Thanks for the Review! Just shared it with the Dev team.
Thanks so much! I always feel awkward spruiking my stuff directly to the devs, and I appreciate you doing this.
@HeyBlondieGamer I very much enjoyed listening to it and the team appreciated your take on the game, thanks again for your review!
I love how if you find a location you like, you can make a base work there. I didn't care for it at first, but I've come to realize the best part of the brainstorming mini-game was that it brings new items to your attention. I changed the settings to turn it off, and found I was overlooking new items, so turned it back on. I definitely got strong HL, Deus Ex and System Shock vibes with it. It's a great game, worth every cent, and I'm really looking forward to future updates, as well as the potential mod scene.
The brainstorming mini-game (if you can really call it that) is thematic, but it also demonstrates which components you need to craft the item. The more I used it, the more I loved it.
Nice to see an actual Half-Life spiritual successor after the disappointment that was Phantom Fury
This will scratch the Half-Life itch like no other. The HL themes are incredibly strong, even when Abiotic Factor shows it's own personality.
I was just mapping in J.A.C.K for Blue Shift.. Guess I ain’t finishing that map now.
best game environment and sound.
Spartan candidates are chosen at 7 I believe.
I'm still SO in love with this game
You should have made Tycho Patrick Bateman
Also a good pick.
OG games are the best games, back when developers werent corrupt money grinders all stammering around for our attention and disposable income, games were sold in a more or less, complete state, and DLC's cost a small fraction of the actual game price. It was truely the greatest era for gaming. What we have now is half assed, money grabs, poorly put together, rushed to market after having chopped up the final product, so that DLCs could be sold later, without any additional development. -e I cannot stand the current era of gaming. I am so glad i kept all my old consoles and games from the old days.
This is why AAA will eventually fall. The business model is outdated, and indie studios offer great experiences for a fraction of the price. The competition is steep now, and the big studios haven’t recognized the danger.
Capitalism & an unbiased Free Market created Diablo & no one should mind others profiting off great creations. It's not the profit that bothers me it's the lack of passion creators have for there creations & there Motivations or Agendas in mind when making these Games. Leftist political agendas have infected everything. It's not just Games its Sports & Entertainment realm & even Comic Book characters. The Mainstream Media plays a huge rule in this because they've all been infected & they promote agendas by lobbying for funding for Games no one wants. This is why there's many Game Developers that don't even like Gaming. They've either made it in because of Gender or Ethnicity. If the Gaming Realm was left to pure Capitalism & the Free Market you'd see Games being made the way they were in the 1990s & early 2000s.
6:33: I lived in a place that is blanketed by clouds for months at a time, so I didn't give the darkness a second thought. I live in a nearby town that has much more sunlight though, so I know it's not normal now.
If the sun is gone for the whole day in Australia, it’s probably an apocalypse 😂
What about the mod stalker: oblivion lost remake 3.0?
I could never cover all the mods for this video, the 2 featured were specifically requested which is why I used them.
1998 seemed like a crazy year for gaming, Unreal, Half Life, Thief, Rainbow Six, Resident Evil 2. Ofc i never got to appreciate most of those having been born in 99, but ive grown to appreciate them over the last decade (well, half-life, R6 and RE2 and Unreal anyway)
It’s nice to see that newer generations are able to appreciate what these games meant to industry when they released (or, in some cases, well after release).
@HeyBlondieGamer it helps that I had 2 older brothers and my dad who was very much into those kinds of games. As a result, I grew up on some tom Clancy games and always hearing about the OG Resident evil series. I got into UT99 back in 2013, especially with mods, after watching your video I'm now thinking of grabbing this game to do a playthrough.
@nickysimi9866 You’ll need to get your skull-and-bones on as Epic yanked it from digital storefronts. I did find a site which still hosted it as abandonware but can’t remember the name of it now. I’m sure you’ll have a blast if you can get your hands on a copy.
Probably my favourite marathon video mate, well made and it got me through work today I'd be keen to see more highly detailed videos on myth, halo or oni. Course you don't have to but I'd enjoy em all the same, especially m2 and infinity vids. Hope your years been a good one
I recently played half-life for the first time I'm a huge portal fan Read the comcs Played Mel and reloaded and qube when I was a dumb kid and thought it was portal 3 I'm also a pretty huge Doom fan so a synthesis of Doom and portal piqued my interest Needless to say I was extremely disappointed I did not like Half-Life at all it was extremely sloppy unpolished and most importantly unfun please let me know what you love about half life if you are a fan because I'm really struggling to find the appeal even though I want to enjoy half-life
There were many things about Half-Life which were innovative for the time and include: AI, presentation (the intro sequence is a great example of the ‘show, don’t tell’ tenet of storytelling), and map design. Comparing it to Portal or Doom won’t give you a 1-to-1 fit, even when combined, they are all vastly different. You don’t have to *like* something, but knowing the conditions of the industry at the time might let you appreciate it more. Consider that it was built on the Quake 2 engine. Comparing what was done in Quake 2 vs Half-Life is a better comparison and more indicative of HL’s ‘wow’ factor for the time.
I see marathon video I like it
I really enjoy your videos. I turned this one on and fell asleep and was treated to the ongoing audio while I was dreaming! Very surreal
I love videos like this
I watched all three videos and I quite like them. However, I have to say something about this Noosphere. It is merely a philosophical concept; not a theory. It's not even a hypothesis. A hypothesis has to be able to be studied, reproduced and checked if it is unfalsifiable. Right now, it is simply a metaphysical concept trying to marry a god and human consciousness together. Until a god is proven to exist and a noosphere exists, it is nothing but metaphysical, religious pseudo-science.
That’s my mistake for poor choice of word. I understand what you’re saying and agree. In no way shape or form do I believe in a noosphere. It is a fascinating concept though, and fertile grounds for storytelling.
I would argue that the bleak and claustrophobic horrific atmosphere of Diablo is not only unrivalled at the series but gaming as a whole. I appreciate there is subjectivity to that though.
Fallout does a bang-up job of that too in its own way, but I get what you’re saying. The gameplay mechanics of D1 complement the oppressive atmosphere well.
Alexander Brandon is to be commended for his masterful work in this game's soundtrack.
He managed to capture the mystery and whimsy of an alien world, imparting the gravity of a beautiful environment as much as the impact Unreal had on the industry.
As simple as the story was, I've always been a fan of Jason Court's performance as Kyle Katarn. My only regret is, that unless Disney comes to its senses, Jedi Knight will remain his only performance as this iconic character. I'm not blind, by now is unfortunately too old to play a young Katarn. But I can always see him as an old Jedi master. Great video which deserves more views and likes. Insta-subcribe.
It’s been incredible to see in the comments how many people loved Jason’s performance. I feel as though he captured the spirit of Star Wars perfectly, managing a nice balance of loveable rogue and a man struggling with his darkness. As much as I’d love to see him portray Katarn again, I think that window has well and truly closed. We can be thankful that he lives on through Jedi Knight and that indelible spot in our hearts. Cheers, I appreciate it.
