Honest film criticism from a lifelong cinema obsessive.
Hi I’m Dan and I love films and going to the cinema. I review films and TV shows new and old.
I’ve always wanted to create movie reviews on RUclips and after years of trying other forms of content creation here I am 😁
I know there are a lot of film critics out there on RUclips but if you love films and cinema, and you like your reviews to be snappy whilst giving you plenty of insight but no spoilers where possible then you found the right movie review channel.
I don’t do this full time as I work a 9-5 full time job so I try to upload at least once a week.
Enjoy the reviews and I’ll see you in the comments.

I have now watched "Heretic" four times. Mr. Reed is a polygamist. --
Where you entertained?
. . . Mildly, just mildly🫤
Megalopolis is the most expensive NEIL BREEN movie not directed by Neil Breen. But while Breen's movies are fun because they are "so bad they are good, Megalopolis is so bad that just makes you cringe and constantly check your watch.
aaaand now I've heard and searched for Neil Breen and I'm both horrified and gut laughing at the same time.
I think saw in on dvd after my sister in law recommended it, Exceed my expectation
It's truly a great film.
Nope not good
This film? Second brewing of a tea bag in my opinion.
🤣 expertly put 🫖
Terrible. The mutant dog like apes and sharks, not to mention little to no character development
Those goddamn sharks 🦈 and yeah mutant apes were super weird.
Decent movie , Pedro pascals character was entirely unnecessary though. This sequel also kinda ruins the whole vibe from the original, had this been a a stand alone film I’d like it…
I like d the movie. I was entertained.
I think Ridley Scott has devolved into money grubbing.
The father - son connection was a bad idea - a lame attempt to make you feel something for the main character in this - but it just takes away from the original film. - He had a love and loyalty to his wife a child but was banging the emperor's daughter around the same time.... ? Why couldn't Maximus be admired and respected for simply being a man?.... That's because men have no value unless they provide something like fatherhood...
Yep I feel exactly the same 👍🏻
you have no ideea how the roman empire was like I see. Sex had nothing to do with being honorable.
@@Spincushor absolutely I'm sure in a real world scenario sure, and correct, I don't know much about the real Roman Empire... but when you dig into the history proper, Ridley likes to cherry pick bits. But, when you plant into FICTION the idea in the first film that this man is honourable to his wife and son to a 21st century audience and then you flip that in a later sequel, it does a disservice to the story and the perceived honour of that character. It's not a question of history, it's a question of... was it necessary? I don't think it was.
@@SpincushorI see you have completely missed my point...
@@shhimwatchingyes it's the narrative choice and the perception of modern audiences. That's the point. But being a loyal husband and father... That wasn't valued? Well, that how it's presented in the first film
Didn’t need a sequel. Gladiator was a standalone classic
Yeah, despite me enjoying some aspects of this, part of me wishes they’d just left it alone.
I just watched it and came across this RUclips video. My opinion about the movie is this: bad story writing, distorted and inaccurate historical narration, unsuccessful and exaggerated theatrical bad acting, events and ceremonies that cannot be applied in practice in Roman history, bad editing. Mescal is very bland, there is no character depth. The man's wife was murdered a week ago and he is walking around throughout the movie grinning at his friends' stupid jokes. The man's facial expressions had nothing to do with the scenes he played. There are also those who shamelessly say that Denzel will be nominated for an Oscar with this movie, but I can't find anything to say :))) (I'm keeping Pedro separate.) I have watched B-class movies before, which were of better quality but did not make a splash because they had a lower budget. This was pure torture for these eyes, which had previously watched the Gladiator 1, ROME TV series and Spartacus. Fast forward to now and I finished it in an hour. I'm glad I didn't pay at the cinema.
💯 I don’t even think Denzel Washington was that great in this.
That's fair honestly. I thought he injected so much life and interest. Not his best, but certainly needed.
To be honest Gladiator didn't need a sequel. However said, it was an entertaining movie. Nowhere near as good as Gladiator but that is understandable as few sequels can ever be as good. Maximus being the central character in Gladiator was masculine, strong and a leader. Nowadays they don't want to portray this image of men without women being equal. Strength and honour. The best character in This movie was Denzel, he really gave his character meaning. I enjoyed it overall but videos like this often make us look deeper but don't put me off it.
Denzel was good but that Maximus sons actor… he is bad
I loved it
So… like… erm… ive still not seen the first 😂😂😂
Good god man 🤦♂️
Terrible sequel.
The movie was amazing you’re just tasteless
Thanks for watching😁. . . So, I know I repeat it so many times, but how damn good is Denzel in this??👍
Hum i wonder who Mister Reed voted for?
. . . I couldn't possibly tell 🤣
Noooooooooooo Gladiator 2 is a stain on the wondrous original.
hmm yeah... think i'm with ya in a way > ruclips.net/video/quaxg2UQZZY/видео.html
Embarrassingly it took me many years after its release to see this movie, but I’m happy I allowed myself to mature to appreciate its glory. The soundtrack always gives me goosebumps, the performances are stellar and the story is one I can watch over and over again for decades.
Gladiator is a masterpiece! I too watched it first on VHS in all its grainy glory 😄
Yeeeah! Team VHS ✊🏻📼
Thanks for watching... If you've seen Gladiator, how did you first see it? Anyone in club VHS??
Looks weird as hell, I might have to go and see it.
It’s certainly not your run of the mill horror/thriller. The conversations are probably the most exhilarating parts.
I've always been a fan of Hugh Grant. He is very believable.
Have you seen him in The Gentlemen? He’s utterly brilliant in that.
Cool, youtube recommended me a new channel that's actually trying instead of lets players with no charisma chasing trends so they don't have to work for a living. Subscribed.
Your thumbnail is good, you clearly know how to balance audio, no obnoxious intro, well composed and lit camera shots, and the script is tight and concise while the editing is minimalist but helps illustrate a point when needed. Well done.
Thanks so much 🙏 That means a great deal to me. I only get to do this very part time, but I shoot for quality in the little time I have. Cheers for subbing 😁
The shared delusion is actually between the filmmaker and the audience.
As a big bayverse fan myself, I can say with EASE that this is the best Transformers movie so far
It’s honestly stuck with me. Really enjoyable, happy to see more too.
The best transformers new origin movie. easy for new fan and old fan give a idea of the variant of Transformers... the story looks abit a same, but is just another version only. they finally show the golden age of cybertron movie, that all fan want it the most.
Yeah, as a none fan it felt a lot more fun than the live action ones.
I actually liked it better than the first one too.
welcome to the club ☺
Well I just watched it... A lot of nostalgia sounds and pictures meshed together. I felt so many times forced to remember my experiences from the first two movies. It felt a bit awkward to say the least. This is one more example of trying to get the feeling to audiences decades away from the environment that made those flicks great. Nowadays it just feels they are trying to press you dry, because you liked the first two or three installations.
Yeah it does crowbar in sooo many call backs to the earlier ones to try and leverage your emotion. I'd love to hear what someone who has absolutely zero knowledge of the earlier movies thought about it, but I can't imagine you'd give this a go if you hadn't already connected with the previous ones.
The last two live-action films haven't shared a universe with the previous five, and Bumblebee at least is very well regarded, if that helps.
Yeah I kinda enjoyed Bumblebee.
Thank You for giving a different perspective on this Film. I am going to see it tonight! I know I won't be disappointed.
Appreciate you watching, hope you had a good time with it. 😊
I truly believe this movie will be a cult classic in a few years. It's subversive, interesting, and intensely bleak. The major problem for me with this film is it needs a directors cut.
I can see it getting more recognition as time goes by for sure.
yes it was. Turning this in a musical was a bad mov(i)e.
… I see what you did there 😉
keep it up dude
Thanks 🙏 will do
I think you definitely hit the nail on the head with the story and the way it was handled, especially regarding how it was clearly made for both kids and adults. Funnily enough, that was the entire point of making this movie. The Bay films had taken the franchise to a place that was really made for older fans...but were so poorly made by the end that they ultimately appealed to no one. Transformers One was a fresh attempt to bring humor and a new origin story for the younger generation to hook onto the franchise, but at the same time gave a lot of callouts and references that old-school fans would pick up on and enjoy. It has its lighthearted moments, but as you said, also darker and more impactful moments that show that the story is really here to show the complex dynamic that connects Optimus and Megatron, what made them the people they are today, and how this can then set up a potential new universe to play with in the future. I don't know if this new interpretation of the classic Transformers universe is going to stick, but at the very least, the movie is fantastic and a true love letter to all Transformers fans, old and new alike.~
Yeah agreed, and honestly I came out thinking I’d like to see more.
@@shhimwatching I would say the same for sure, so let's hope for the best.
I loved the performances and the direction that Todd Phillips and Joaquin Pheonix decided to go with the character of Arthur with having him face the consequences of his actions and battle with his identity through them. The challenges placed on Arthur both felt subversive and yet cohesive with where we last saw him in 2019’s Joker. However, the lame musical sequences, thin story, and off-putting ending bog this movie down tremendously! Still, I have not stopped thinking about since I left the theatre, and that is worth something in my opinion. Great review!
Yeah, love or hate them - films that stick with you long after viewing are special.
This Movie is a Disaster 👎😒
An opinion I’ve seen said many times. What made it a disaster for you?
@@shhimwatchingMany didn't even see it and just parrot this opinion.
@@rodrigoodonsalcedocisneros9266 keep up this cope buddy
@@jcdezmen Snarky little comments like yours serve no purpose. Keep on hating, I guess.
People did not enjoy the regression back to Arthur, but after expectations are removed(often on second viewing)- one can really appreciate this film for itself. Nice thumbnail btw!
Thanks 🙏 agreed, I really hope people give this a second chance.
Was it awful... or did you enjoy this? Really would love to know others opinions on Joker 2 😁
I think both movies are better than you give them credit for, but kudos for being one of the very few youtube reviewers that didn't ride the hate wave for views and actually went into the theater with an open mind and enough patience to at least enjoy its ups and get the gist of what the author was trying to do. Your review is fair, and that's all that matters. Just my two cents: the musical scenes are jarring on purpose, to show all the conflicting emotions on Arthur's head, and the words sung actually do represent what the characters (at least Arthur for sure) feel and think. Maybe, like you said, there are some latent emotional aspects that are not represented on many numbers (like Arthur's increasing lack of trust of Lee's intentions) but I feel they are still subliminally evoked through the doom and dark sounds of the symphonic score that appears here and there and many times even interrupts the singing numbers. I do agree the courtroom drama is a bit tedious, but I think that's exactly the point, the audience oughta feel the same lack of comfort Arthur does, given it's a psychological type of thriller film. The first one is also very dependant on Arthur's mental state, so that's another consistent element that carries onto the sequel.
Stop the armchair criticism, and start making your own movies.
You see film criticism is a passion of mine and has been for many years, so no I won't. What you can't see is the journey I've been on to decide, with assurity that I want and need to do this. Film making is something I do not want to pursue further, because I have dabbled, and it's not for me. I fully respect anyone who makes or works on films, regardless of my opinion on their work.
I think that was the first film I went to see at the Cinema! So long ago 😮
man what an awesome first film to see in a cinema! Pretty sure mine was Little Mermaid.
After watching that juvenile slop called 'DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE', 'MEGALOPOLIS' is an artistic revelation. Coppola catered to this vision for the last 25 years plus and it showed. It was bold, audacious and in some parts psychedelic. Yes, it was a long in certain sections but the overall creative arc was outstanding. Yes, it's not for the masses because sublimely it touches upon The Tower of Babel, Greed, Lust, Anarchy, Power and The Architecture of the Mind,...so believe me, not everyone is going to get into this movie. However, what Coppola and that cast and crew conveyed was that art, commerce, culture and creativity can be used to hopefully uplift and elevate the human mind and thinking and by creating and financing 'MEGALOPOIS' on his own, FRANCIS FORD COPPOLA has certainly done that. - James D. Watkins, artistic director of PHOENIX PRODUCTIONS.
Thing is Deadpool & Wolverine IS juvenile, and it knows it is. It's dumb, turn your mind off fun that delivers on a fan made promise. Does what it says on the tin, like or not, it's coherent even if it is simplistic. With Megalopolis the overall expectation was of quality and class cinema. Coppola directed some cinematic masterpieces. As I said, some of it is amazing visually, some incredible set pieces, and one or two scenes of conviction and stunning creativity. But when the whole is a mind jangling mess, full of preening pretentious gobbledygook that gives off the most hideous vibe, coupled with some horrendous effects, inconsistent world building, and some of the worst acting I've seen in years, then sorry, nothing can save this for me. Honestly respect anyone getting a kick out of it for being wild and different, totally get it, I try to see all sides in my reviewing, but at the end of the day it's my opinion I voice, and it wasn't for me.
@@shhimwatching I understand. It's just MEGALOPOLIS stands out for being neither pandering nor formulaic. - J.D. Watkins
movie was so awful, they made the volume look so cheap
Yeah so many of the effects looked like some TV movie rubbish
You gotta wonder how much money they lost from people asking for their money back
I’ve heard that so many people walked out. Our screening only had 5 people including me in, everyone stayed, but even I felt the urge to give up at one point.
Is it weird that this makes me want to watch it more? 😂
Not at all. It made me laugh a lot, just not for the right reasons 🤣
This could have been such a great concept, it’s a shame parts of it were so hammed up! 😂
100% 🙌🏻
