What good does it do to buy a big can of paint if you end up stripping & re painting once or maybe twice. Not to mention the amount of paint wasted through overspray. I too get the argument, If this is the ONLY paint you have access to, you have to make it work. If you can afford to step up your game then please do so. You wont regret it in the long run. Great video & hope a valuable lesson was learned by someone today.
My problem with Rust-Oleum is that the nozzles always screw up and I'm stuck with no pain I soak the nozzles and paint thinner and everything I could do is when they start not for work they will not work no matter what you do
For starters, you don’t need to prime. It’s made to adhere to plastic, and you should have either sprayed your clear on 15-20 minutes after your color, or, wait a week until it gasses out completely. So yeah, blah, blah, blah.
Ignore the "Pros", it can and has been done for years. IMO the most important part is in the prep, priming, and sanding of your model. If you do not prep and sand I have found that the Rustoleum either causes or exaggerates some areas of the model bodies to be rough or have strange designs form in them. With proper preparation and sanding, this is not an issue.
Using that paint is hit and miss. I have to use rattle cans because I can only paint in my garage. I have no place to set up an airbrush. I wish I had a basement 😢
I just tried Rustoleum clear over Ace flat black; the clear (and I wasn’t shy about laying it on) didn’t curdle like yours, but the texture in the flat black never went away, either. From using rattle cans on 1:1 car parts, I’ve found that hardware store / tractor paint cans really need you to follow the “within 2 hr / after 48 hr” rule.
I do not understand why people spend $30 bucks for a car kit and spray it with industrial Home Depot rattle cans ?
The funny thing is Steve, Rustoleum make more than the cans you have. They make all kinds of acrylic paint, all of the Testers is Rustoleum stuff, I have several brands of acrylic paint that if you read the fine print they make it too... Lol Were getting 40's down on the other end of Indiana tomorrow Steve and I hated the -2 we had last week... 🥶 LLAP 🖖
I know exactly how you feel, I only primary with the spray can now.👍🏿
I agree that the clear works great if laid on while the color is still wet. Otherwise you must wait a week or more or the cleat will wrinkle.
By the time you have bought 10 cans of paint you have paid for a descent starter airbrush setup. The airbrush gives so much more control. It just isn't worth it to me. Especially after you have to strip failed paint over and over.
Yes. I’m doing these tests to show what can happen even if you’re not new to modeling and painting. I regularly use lacquer paints and 2K through 3 different iwata brushes and 3 gaahleri brushes depending on need. I will not use any spray can paint unless it’s Tamiya or Mr hobby on rare occasions.
And the finish you get using an airbrush and the correct scaled paints is far better.
@@Crazyscalemodels absolutely.
The 2X drys faster than the regular and shines the same regular can take 3 days to dry . I like using 2x but do not clear it.
I waited 2 days and it was dry and I could handle it without leaving finger prints. It looked decent but the clear wrecked it. Before clear it did have some crazing going on.
I have sanded in about 3 days and painted again with the same color paint. It seems to shine better with no problems. I tried to clear like you did And had the same problem.
Someone mentioned having to wait a week or 2 to clear or do it within 20mins of painting. So I’ll add that test to the list and do a clear test later. Thanks for watching.
So, I've been building a 1/35 scale tamya merkava tank and have used the same rustolium primer and tan color in a satin finish and have had no issues like this on video. So, l was going to use a dull coat to seal in the decals, but we'll see how it works out. Thank you for sharing. I found this video to be very helpful. 😊
Thanks. Thanks for watching.
Only problem I have had is the nozzle clogging at about 1/2 can or less . After cleaning the nozzle it clogs again very soon.
I could see that. The 2X does what the can says and pumps out ALOT of paint. Lol
I think the over spray was a happy accident because that center stripe looks awesome. The spaceship looks cool. Can't wait to see it with the weathering
Thanks!
I had the same crinkle happen to me spraying the clear over Tamiya black. Good luck stripping the paint. It will take a week. On a different model I used the Rustoleum 2x brilliant blue and after a week it still wasn't dry.--That took a week to strip too. The only spray from a can I'll use are the automotive primers from the auto parts store. Most brands work well as as base for enamels or lacquer. Other brands are specific for lacquer or enamels. I'll never use the Rustoleum spray on a car body again. I use enamels, lacquers and acrylics...Testors, MCW, Splash, Scale Finishes, Tamaya and Vallejo. Clear--I use an automotive 2K.
I’ve had great results with the cheapest Walmart sprays using black primer and their flat and gloss finishes.
I have a can of that to test also
I used Rustoleum once it melted the plastic on the car roof I never used it on plastic again
I've gotten great results with Rustoleum and I've gotten bad. The bad results were mostly due to my mistakes or me being in a rush. I warm up the can most of the time to improve both the atomization and how the paint lays down. The trick with Rustoleum is to put the clear down within 20 minutes of spraying the last coat of color. If you can't do that, then you have to wait at least a week before doing the clear. I usually try for two weeks. The color coat needs to fully cure/harden before more paint is laid on. If you can still smell the solvents on the paint, then it's not cured yet. I can tell you that for painting car and motorcycle parts (real ones, not models), my goto paint is Rustoleum. I especially like their clear because it goes down smooth, covers well, doesn't run easily, and is durable. For my models, it's a mix of Rustoleum, Krylon, Tamiya, Vallejo, and common art store craft acrylic paints. With a few other odd brands thrown in.
Rattle can special?😳 Primer leaves nice finish, clear is a tad pebbly!🙄 Jman
Just testing. I airbrush 99% of time.
I noticed a couple of things 1) the orange paint was not primer + paint 2) he never mentioned what 2X means, but he demonstrated well! 2X is a FUNCTION not a formula!!! He said “it’s like painting with a garden hose”. And in my opinion, there in lies the problem. You noticed how far out of frame the can was when spraying and the enormous amounts paint hitting the body in really big droplets. And that far back the paint will begin to harden in flight to the body and will not flatten out. And I feel the clear loosened the uncured paint under the surface and it crinkled. I have said many times the Rusty- Stuff is adequate paint IF decanted thinned (if required) and applied with an airbrush. Also it seems when the primer+paint is used there is a reaction of some kind causing problems. This was an outstanding video, and thank you sir for putting yourself out there as you did!!! Good job! I look forward to your next installment!
Thanks. And I have no problem making these videos as I don’t care what people think. I’m gonna test things in a manner like someone new to the hobby would and present my findings. And the the paint being just paint is why I used primer 1st. I do have a can of krylon primer and paint 1 can system to test. Thanks for watching!
So…what I’ve gotten from the video, and the comments from the rustoleum apologists on the Luka Cee page is that this paint is like the Gremlins. Works great if you follow all the rules to using it…. Seems a bit labor intensive. To labor intensive to make it worth my time….
I still prefer the regular Rust-Oleum, not the 2X. It is much easier to use because it is just paint, no built-in primer.
I got some regular to test also
@@CrazyscalemodelsThe regular Rust-Oleum takes days to fully cure. I spray a few light coats in one session letting it level out on its own. The sniff test helps me determine if the paint is fully cured.
@@michaelkeogh8454 thanks for the heads up. I’ll see what’s the can says too.
Nice informative video. Curious to see the decanted version. Thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching
I've used Rustoleum and Krylon. Depends on the particular color and the plastic in the kit, plus whatever degreasing agent might be on the plastic. Some paints I've had great results on, and some I have had to strip and go back to airbrushing something.
it was to cold maybe the can was still to cold try it not cold and in a heated room that paint sucks but can work if done right '' never good cold
Basement is at 70 degrees and the cans were down there for a week before i did the test. I used to paint outside and learned quick about the plastic and paint being cold. Good info tho.
paint all the interior parts black that the way its should be. dash top and doors all black. no body color.
I saw a 68 dart drag car that did the body color above the door cards and I thought it was different. I know they are normally all black just wanted to liven up the interior a bit.
Thanks for doing this video. I use light gray Rustoleum automotive primer/surfacer for some of my scratch builts as a base, then sand and then have only used Rustoleum regular gloss color once. I did what you did and waited a day after the color to spray the clear gloss on it and it alligatored badly. I've gotten excellent results on metal lawn furniture however. I normally use mostly Duplicolor automotive touchup paint for color and clear and it has been compatible with the Rustoleum primer/surfacer. I tend to like the Tamiya spray lacquers even thought they are ridiculous expensive in small cans.
I use duplicolor as well perfect match really likethe finnished product, sprays on real nice, found you an spray it on top of the Rustoleum but you can't spray Rustoleum over the duplicolor or it reacts poorly.
Can't wait for the de canting video as well as the final result.
I’m hoping the decant gives better results. But the decant video is to test if it’s the paint or the volumn/propellant causing issues. Thanks for watching.
I'm working on the same model right now using cranberry 2x rustoleum, the only draw back I've found is after a couple cotes you start to lose the emblems because the paint is heavy but it always looks good in the end.
That’s the biggest issue with the 2X I noticed in my test is it comes out so heavy no matter how light you press.
So you FELL on THAT Sword. 😂 Nice job.....on the video. 😁 Thanks for doing this.
Yea. Kinda hooked on testing the different paints. I’m a sucker for pain 😂
Just found your channel and subbed. Great video's 😮😮😮
Thanks for subscribing!
Interesting when someone comments " I never have a problem", but never tells you there routine. (time in between coats...etc. ) which would be helpful. Also your at the mercy of whatever air pressure randomly come out of the can. Ive been automotive painter the past 50yrs. Im with you. Dont like gambling paint systems on hrs of work. Hpi guys paint jobs are not good btw.
Right. But if the user is happy and content I’m not gonna knock it. Just gonna test and share and answer questions I’m able to answer. Thanks for watching.
I use it on my models and I don't have any problems with it
Pat from Cardz Scale Dreams had a chill model where he used rubs to make his car look like some of the paint was down to the bare metal. It's a cool look for sure. 😎👍
Two mist coats, two medium coats and a final coat, but never heavy. From what i could tell in the video you went kind of heavy with the clear. I'm not saying that paint can match an airbrush or even Tamiya cans, but I have a few nice builds that look nice in the shelf from when I first got back into the hobby.
I have different paints to try. The biggest problem I found with the 2X is the paint just dumps out when you barely press the sprayer. The clear did go a bit heavy. The camera did make appear a lot heavier than it was.
I've had issues with Rustoleum clear coats also found if you spray it while the paint is still tacky it's usually fine but I use min wax in a spray can ot works on everything it looks hazy after you spray it but it dries crystal clear it comes in gloss and matt if you want a flat look
I might try that. Spray the paint and then after 10 mins or so hit it with the clear and see what happens. It’s all about testing.
I use this Rustoleum paint for the most part. I use it because I don't know how to airbrush and it's cheap. I'd rather spend $5 on a can of paint that will last me on a few different models than to spend a good amount more on paint, thinner, and everything else for airbrushing. Plus I can pick this up when I'm at Walmart every week compared to making extra trip to a dedicated model store for Tamiya or airbrush paint. Occasionally I'll use Tamiya or a different spray. I know that I don't usually get a good paint job but a shotty paint job is better than it not being painted.
What advantages do you find by dry sanding vs. wet?
For the primer if I wet sanded it would have become “muddy”. The primer had so much texture. I only wet sand if I need to wet sand color coats or clear. That’s what works for me.
@@Crazyscalemodels Thank you so much for taking the time to respond!
@ I try to answer questions when I can. Thanks for watching!
Ive had it work fine, and Ive had it etch the plastic. There is a way to seal the plastic so its fine. Thats what I do every time.
I use rustoleum primer. I believe that the solvents straight from the can is too strong. I decant it and after gassing it out it can be used using an airbrush.
That’s gonna be a test I do. Same paints through the airbrush.
I just used Rustolium Apple red/gloss clear coat. You can’t wait too long to spray clear coat. You have to spray on as if it were a third or fourth coat of the color. I learned this by accident out of frustration. I get satisfactory results now
For guys looking for a budget spray paint option, Krylon makes a brand called Short Cuts, its an enamel, but seems to work really well. Its about $4-6 a can, the only bummer is a limited color selection.
I’ve seen that at the store. Might test that as well. Lol
WARNING regarding De Agostino. I subscribed to the 1/8 scale GT Ford from De Agostino. I received 14 months of parts then the parts stopped arriving in February of 2024 and I was still charged. I contacted their Customer Service on multiple occasions. Their response your issue will be escalated, even though they reported my subscription was active and in good standing. This has been going on for 10 months with no resolution. Now the De Agostino website indicates the model has been discontinued. I’ve invested over $1,200.00 dollars. My investment is now worthless since I’m unable to complete the build. Be ware! January 24 2025 update. The website indicates the model has been discontinued. I contacted De Agostini again, their Customer Service representative Kened said he would escalate the problem, Kened was unable to provide a contact of someone who could help me.
It’s Chet, Chester or Billboard, I think it’s the clear coat, I did a model with TAMIYA let it sit for a week and sprayed with the rustoleum clear and it did it to the TAMIYA paint just like your body ended up. I personally don’t like any rattle can as you have in my opinion much more control with an airbrush. My email was part serious and part out of jest. My biggest pet peeve with the whole arguments on the book of Face are the ones who knock the hardware store rattle cans say only use hobby paints on models, what they won’t mention is the “hobby paints” they refer too especially the better ones are actual automotive grade paints in small quantities, and 2k clear is automotive clear. Just my 2 cents and with the economy of the past 4 years is worth a 1/4 of a half cent lol. And yes I sometimes can be sarcastic,
I agree with thinking it’s the clear. I didn’t the test using all the same “product line “ cause that’s what common knowledge says. Get all the same line and it should work fine. I’m on the side of whatever your happy with and works for you then rock it. Just enjoy the hobby. I personally use lacquer and 2k now cause the end result is the best I’ve seen and imo it’s easy for me. But yea the economy has kinda screwed things up. Your email gave me the idea to do various tests so if someone new to the hobby has issues maybe they would see the video and not lose hope. It’s a great hobby and takes some trial and failures to find what works for you. Thanks for watching
@ I mostly use createx, have had some issues but am getting mostly great results, I use kbs diamond clear cause I don’t want to spray 2k in the house, I’ve also have had great results and some not so great especially as it ages but usually it’s user error. I have some scale finishes paints but haven’t tried it yet.
Odd I used the same paint on my 66 Nova had no issues.
That was part of the test is a lot of people use that same paints and get widely different results. Gonna try different brands and paints and see what they do also.
