I Had A Feeling That Might Happen! | Jigging | Hawaii Kayak Fishing
Another fun solo mission!
I was happy that the weather held out for the whole day, especially since I was out there by myself. The day started off productive as the opelu bite was on! I had at least 20 and released a lot of the small ones. During the opelu bite I sent one out on my Tiagra 16 and not long after a nice sized Uku grabbed it. I was super happy because I hadn't caught Uku in a while. After gathering enough bait I pushed out a bit deeper where I hooked into a nice little Shibi on my new Talica 16! Again, I was super pumped to have a nice variety to bring home to the family. I was seeing a lot of bait piles so decided to drop a jig on my Daiwa Seaborg G400J. I saw some suspended...

After a long month of no fishing I was finally able to get back out there and boy what a nice welcome back fish! I hit the water with Blaine, Loren and @wheres_d_ahi and it was a fun one indeed. Bait was plentiful which is always a promising start to the day. I think we all had 8-10 Opelu and Devan probably had 150 as he usually does haha. When bait is tough to find, it's nice to have another option to catch fish. Jigging is one of the most versatile ways to catch just about anything in the ocean. Target the bottom species, drop on suspended marks, and even sight cast with it and rip it along the surface. No matter where I go, I never leave my jigging setup behind. It gives me the confidence I need to always put something in the ...

    Thanks for all of your video's...just purchased a kayak...and starting to pick up gear. Your explanations are very helpful. Any chance you could do a full walk-through video of your kayak setup please? I'll be purchasing/installing accessories with the incoming Black Friday sales...rod holders, what works and what you found didn't work. I've been stalking the flats fly-fishing for bonefish these past few years here on Oahu and with the kayak, can now try for bottom fish and hopefully pelagic's. I've tied up some damashi /sabiki rigs...and plan on heading out just to see if I can locate/catch some opelu first. btw...I have a Hobie Tandem Mirage Oasis (trying to get wife out on the water more). I'll be running this solo most of the time I am thinking...so I will have more room up front for fish bag, etc. Thanks again for sharing all of your experience with your video's. 🤙

      Ehhhhh thanks a lot for the kind words! 🙏I do plan on making that video soon as a lot of people have been asking so keep an eye out for it! Ya black friday is a great time to stock up on gear. That would be an awesome way to get around the flats for bonefish! If you can learn to catch bait consistently then you'll most definitely find success. And even if it takes a while to learn bait catching tactics, there's still plenty of ways to catch fish out there. My good buddy solo fishes a tandem and he loves it. Like you said, lot's of space up front for gear. I appreciate your support! Have fun and be safe out there! 🔥💪

    Hammer time! Yo, between your two fish finders, which displays do you keep up? I find CHIRP helps me see fish good but the CV helps me see structure. Thinking about an upgrade and wondering if the SV is worth it. Thanks braddah!

    • @jifishingco
      @jifishingco 23 дня назад

      Ehhhhh thanks a lot! My smaller unit I use strictly for maps and the larger unit I use traditional CHIRP 70% of the time. When I venture beyond 300ft I’ll manually switch to the lowest frequency which on my unit is 80kHz. This gives a stronger signal to mark fish in deeper water. I’ll occasionally throw on down imaging because it’s cool to look at with all the detail but I find it doesn’t perform that well in deeper water. Same with side view. I rarely use it because it’s not designed for deep water and doesn’t perform well. However, if you stay in shallow water less than 100ft it does show a good amount of detail. As soon as you push out farther the scale of everything is so small due to the depth and it’s hard to read structure. Hope that helps!

    Solid information brother! great visual presentation. question do both your slow pitch and vertical jigging setups have a swivel or do you ever tie directly to the solid ring with no swivel?

    • @jifishingco
      @jifishingco 23 дня назад

      Ehhhh thanks a lot! I appreciate that! 🙏🏻 I personally use a swivel but a lot of people out there tie directly to the solid ring. I’ve never tried it myself so I can’t speak on which one performs better. I would assume you’d get less line twists with a swivel, but the solid ring would theoretically be stronger because it’s less connection points that could potentially fail.

      When jigging the max I typically go is 50lb fluorocarbon leader on my heavy setup and up till this day it’s been working great! Thats definitely a factor but with jigging it’s mostly reaction and aggression bites so it will make a difference but don’t think it will be as much of a difference vs live baiting in terms of visibility to the fish. However, line diameter plays a huge role in the freedom and action of the jig, as well as drag/resistance in the water especially when going very deep. This day was the first time my PE line broke on me on my heavy setup opposed to the fluorocarbon leader. I think the line was damaged because my reels max drag pressure doesn’t even exceed my line breaking strength, not even close. If the line wasn’t damaged it shouldn’t have broke, but that doesn’t mean I would have been able to stop him diving down. Some powerful fish out there! Thanks for watching! 💪🏻🔥

      Unfortunately for me personally from past experience that’s not really an option when jigging the bottom for these fish. As soon as they get hooked they dive into the reef to try and break you off. I’ve had much higher success rate tightening down vs letting them run. Realistically I only had one setup that could handle these fish that day but the first time my line broke on it when it shouldn’t have. The PE line must have been frayed because it popped even though my drag pressure didn’t exceed the breaking strength of the line. It’s been on there for a while so perhaps I should have it replaced. Oh well, that’s fishing. Thanks for watching! 👍🏻🔥

I used to allow them to run but didn’t have much success so I changed tactics and had a much better success rate. Ulua and Kahala are notorious for diving into the reef so you gotta put the brakes on them. Unfortunately it didn’t work in my favor that day haha. Thanks for watching! 🙏🏻

      I know right! I thought I had an Aha on the line cuz I was just dragging it in. As soon as it saw the kage it freaked out 🤣 almost had a 30 second fight, instead turned to 10 minutes 😂 Thanks for the feedback brotha. I’m definitely going to experiment with the new camera. Ya it’s a beautiful fish! Looking forward to our next adventure 🤙🏻

    What size line do you use with your 150g jig? Thank you for the video.

      @jifishingco 4 месяца назад

      Thanks a lot! 🙏🏻 I typically use 40 or 50lb when I run my 150g jigs, primarily due to the size of the fish that I’m likely going to encounter. If you’re targeting smaller fish, or bigger fish, I’d suggest adjust accordingly so you’re equipped to handle those fish 🤙🏻
