We love the Delos looks and design.

There is also carbon fibre which deserves its own category (outside GRP fibreglass) but it’s very costly…
@@alandelmas1236 that's true, or mixed use with carbon in high stress areas to keep the cost down. Can be noisy at 20 knots!
Carbon fiber was very expensive in the last century, but in the past decade, the price of ordinary carbon fiber has dropped dramatically. However, many shipyards are deliberately deceiving users.
A well build cold molded epoxy over wood (ply) boat is lighter and at least as strong as aluminium. Minimum rot if good plywood is chosen. People had made the mistake and used hardwood plywood and mahogany.
@@ottifantiwaalkes9289 have a look at Punch Catamarans (multicat-algarve.com) who build to this method. Also custom Looping worth a look
Can you tell me about a concrete boat that you know? Do you know a concrete boat?
@@ottifantiwaalkes9289 there are quite a few for sale on YachtWorld. It's not a widely used material these days, mostly DIY projects. My neighbour built one.
@katamaranscom your neighbor built a concrete boat? When? Where?
@@ottifantiwaalkes9289 New Zealander Richard Hartley designed many ferro cement boats, many of which are still sailing, there are concrete barges on the Thames River over 100 years old. In Australia Tony Fisher built a concrete yacht called Helsal that won the Sydney Hobart yacht race in 1973 in what was then record time. I do hope that your google is not broken.
How cool is that
boats are like women, there is no perfection, please stop aluminum indoctrination, fiber glass is good, aluminum is good , carbon is good …..
There are pros and cons to everything which we list in the video. Indoctrination? You either agree or disagree, pretty simple.
When you say lightweight, how do you define this statement ? When you say a boat is lightweight, compared with what?
@@stefantornblom1555 compared with other boats (built of say other materials) that have a similar waterline length. I take your point, there are a ton of variables not the least of which is how much gear you load on.
Been following the Delos build and it has been amazing, great looking cat.
@@Satronaut-pw3ij they've obviously been spending many a night perfecting the finer details
Really good overview of Aluminum sailboats. There are a few more monos from France and Netherlands. ALL boats can have galvanic corrosion: wood boats, steel, aluminum, plastic composites, if they have more than one type or alloy of metal in contact with the water. That's why ALL boats need sacrificial anodes, electrical bonding, etc.
@@LoanwordEggcorn thanks. Yes, it's always a little scary when you change those sacrificial anodes and they are looking well munched. Boats = maintenance in exotic (or not) locations
All metal is effected even if not in contact with water boat floats in. Radiant
Guys.. you 2 talk slight idijotizem.. for eksaple.. mumby is to thin it bends.. i dont know how will behave that odisy... but looks thin.. however thats not neceserry that will bend... And looogical all they will screem how good their boat is.. but behind that storry is allways another storry
A lot of mumbys on the water for decades and a lot of miles on them, no one talks about bending- but then you seem to have no clue about construction. I guess you are fantasizing to troll? Also, if you can't write English, use a translator.
😅
Had not heard of the Freedom Catamaran before. Looks like it's being built along side the Odisea.
I don't think the Freedom is being built at all. The pictures on their site are of the Odisea builds in progress, not of their design. Smells fishy.
Xquisit 60 solar sail?
@@laszlopricz175 yes, good shout
Dont forget JFA 85 cat 😅
There's a few more designs and builds out there including one Al design for Seawind and some smaller designer builders in Australia. As a asides .. GRP is a particular problem globaly as a material because of its end of life disposal problems and sheer volume of old boats abandoned and damaged The material itself is unpleasent to work with and requires large amounts of water and Energy to produce and releases CO2 .in its manufacture. The fibers in air or water have shown to be extremely harmful when worked or abraded and the resins are toxic... Greener and safer alternatives are being sort. Which brings us to natural Basalt derived products... fibers meshes and rebars can all be made from Basalt .. both to use in composits and concrete .. it very green by comparison and highly resiliant to most forms of chemical, attack impacts tends to fail more progressively it very innert and resistant to Osmosis its noise deadning and an excellent insulator electricaly and thermally...it very, very temperature stable and impervious to UV damage and radiation. Its lighter than steel as mesh or rods for rebar.. totaly un effected by salt water acids and alkalies... So Combined with new forms of low carbon high strength thin cement/concrete it can produce a springy corrosion and crack fee concrete hull...if some ones willing to test it... at the moment its extendively used in producing thin wall domes for industrial disaster protection and domestic use. Where a dome bladder is inflated and a framework of basalt erected then concrete is sprayed onto to the structure usually from the inside .. .. The result is a immensly strong slightly springy light wt reinforced concrete structure that is less likely to develope cracks because its thermal expansion is homogenius and impervious to chemical attack and salt water corrosion ..fire and extreem cold. We also stand on the verge of a new age of technically enhanced wood construction. Polymer scientist have developed ways of modifying cheap fast grown soft woods and giant bamboo the worlds fastest growing woody plant /grass and making it stronger rot proof and fire resistant and far more durable.. the final product can be formed into curves or moulded into girders or pannels like plywood. It can also be changed opticaly so that clear translute and transparent pannels of wood can be produced from the same softwood Carbon sink timber but that will perform more like composits or metals and even unprotected could last 80+ years.. 🥼🧙🏼♂️ the product is still wood but the physical and chemical structure is modified .. a waste product is produced.. acetic acid .. vinigar which is a magor feed stock used in the synthesis of other common chemicals and foods. At the moment there are two companies i know of working in the field Dutch Accoya and the US international startup Inventwoods Metelwood. In place of carbon fiber woods and GRP many yatch builders are working with plant fiber s like flax and hemp fibers and developing thermo recyclable resins or bio waste sugars derived epoxyies. There are also new forms of lighter stronger more crack resistant glass being developed - that are also much greener to produce, with significantly less CO2 produced and energy required. 40%. The products have been lab developed and tested and are in the process of being developed commercially at scale. The Dutch have used Accoya to construct motorway flyover bridges to test the concepts at the massive scale required in civil engineering.
@@clivestainlesssteelwomble7665 very interesting, thank you for sharing, I am going to investigate these developments. Windelo use basalt fibre and PET foam to build their boats
Portofino 52 is my big favorit. It should be ready around June and 47 should be ready around March.
@@magnusenamd looking forward to seeing these on the water
The Portofino 52 has some amazing new features and design applications, and it appears to be very well built, but man, it is going to be extremely heavy. Luxury over performance.
@@donaldlovegrove1754 It remains to be seen whether what you say is true in practice. Exciting.
@@katamaranscom Yes, I have longed for this for a long time. Now it's so close at last.
@@magnusenamd You can't defy physics laws. This boat is way too heavy. The polars that have been issued for the Portofino 52 are a joke and the owners will be sorely disappointed. They have been warned about it by some highly regarded professionals like Shayne Young.
a trimaran can reach 50 knots and sail around the world non stop. if you can sustain the beating of a circumnavigation its not really a sailing record.
No one here is close to the Portofino 52 and 47. Aluminum is a must in my opinion. But there are other alternatives that are in the works such as InventWood.
Ah, I see you must be psychic 😉. We cover Portofino in our latest video. Alot is going to come down to your budget as to whether you rank them over some of these excellent GRP options. For many, it would be like buying a Toyota Land Cruiser for driving up and down the motorway
@@katamaranscom Oh, I didn't know that. So I'll have to check that out. How fun that you check them out. Yes, of course it's about money. But I think there should be a ban on these. Purely from an environmental point of view, I don't know the difference in money. I don't think environmentally unfriendly should be about money. Because can you afford so much money. So maybe you should wait until you have more money? That traders on what the manufacturers can sell and nothing else? But of the ones you included here, HH 52 stands out as the most interesting. Inventwood is, for example, interesting in terms of environment and also in terms of price. You can check it out.
