Productive or Profitable? Understanding your Gross Margin Analysis to Grow your Profitability

North American agriculture could be described in one statement: “Productive but not profitable.” For decades the primary message to farmers and ranchers has been to become more productive. This messaging has worked wonderfully. Agriculture is more productive than we have ever been. However, on average our farms and ranches are no more profitable than they have ever been. When considering all ec...

    We’re coming up on the 100 year anniversary of Rudy Steiner’s lectures on agriculture! 🎉 Do you think that moving cattle with different components - time, shape of paddock, height of grass etc. could be helped by attention to weather, like wind and barometric pressure, phases of the moon, like the way old farmers almanac used to have recommendations about planting and harvesting according to phases of the moon. And other ways the planets affect the earth? As is farmers and ranchers don’t have enough to think about.

    Carbon........isnt that what we found in dry cell batteries ? The tips on carbon welders / brazing ?? The tube through the center ????? Ive rotational grazed my cattle now for 50 years......never once did I hear about " carbon " ! It was always called " organic matter " now carbon ??? Sorry....but there is no need to complicate life/ grazing !

    Dr. Allen Williams and Understanding Ag are fantastic. I recommend everyone I introduce to regenerative ag and adaptive grazing to them. I just wanted to give my opinion on how to further advance regenerative farming and ranching, especially to the older generation of farmers. In my opinion, to help this generation of farmers understand the benefits of this style of farming, drive home the points of nutrient density in food and positive health impact in animals grazed this way. Yes, Understanding Ag does a great job of this, but I think citing some of these peer reviewed publications would further validate these talking points and give this generation of farmers an opportunity to see the research. I’m sure, in their brains they validate their style of farming from the industrial ag model and research conducted by universities. So let’s give them counter research to show regenerative ag is better for human health, soil health, plant health, an animal health. Basically we need to shine a light on the proof that regenerative ag is the way to go.

    He talks about destocking for a drought, but what folks aren't hearing is the increased carrying capacity of regeneratively grazed land - if you can carry 50% more animals, then have to destock by 40%, you still have more animals than the set stocking farms.😊

    A fuzzy line is because it is not clarified. That hydrometer is for clear liquid. It has nothing to do with minerals. Hydrometers are for soluble solids, any particles are insoluble and cause different refraction. Taught in Wine school.

    😇 claims about the soil as a carbon sink needs some serious science to verify. Will Brinton has been in youtube recently claiming so much exaggeration of the capacity of soil to sequester carbon. not to debunk biological agriculture but we are in the age of hype...blessings to all

    Loved this! I feel like I get little helpful hints the more I hear the stories and examples. I am still struggling to understand how to identify and group types of plants. Nicole gives examples, but I go out into the landscape and am still at a loss. Also wondering about p Invasive weed plants that are perennial. Like here in Texas, privet is one of the most difficult plants to manage, but it is so easy to grow in a wide range of conditions its hard to know what it is trying to do. Is it possible it is mining the soil for some difficult-to-find mineral? Would it die back once the soil had more balance? How am I supposed to see it? I am currently trying the method mentioned on her book and in this video, though it isn't a precise recipe so I am not certain I've done it right. Still waiting on the muck in the bucket... Thanks, yall! -kat

    Thanks so much Kara . I live in lreland and we can grow lots of grass but unfortunately because we get a lot of cloudy wet weather our brix levels are normally low. Is there anything we can do to help this ?

    • @paulbraga4460
      @paulbraga4460 Год назад

      minerals in the form of rock dusts, given that you have the full spectrum, particularly calcium and phosphorus is what you may need to emphasize if you want to get to nutrient-dense grass faster. wet weather need not dilute nutrients. pushing microbial performance alleviates soil mineral imbalances like too much magnesium but soil amendments helps one get to the goal. additions need not be, even should not be, in huge amounts but in increments - microbial performance is disrupted by dumping so much calcium carbonate....blessings
