knitting on a winter weekend, alone but not lonely. 🕯️🎀❄️
A cosy, slightly chaotic and extremely cancerian weekend vlog of knitting, talking, feeling & taking stock, one year into the journey. More cats and chaos in the first half, more crying and wisdom in the second half - pick your poison. I've timestamped the "knitting saved my life" monologue if you want to skip straight to the juicy bit! 💙

I think a good way to make patterns more accessible is to start allowing partial previews to potential customers before they buy. If I prefer a pattern to be written in a certain way, it's always a bit disappointing that I can only find out if a pattern was written in that preferred way (or not) AFTER I buy it.
it's so nice to see fellow knitting/crochet/writing ADHD insight. so much relatable here. ty.
You're my new favourite channel ❤
OMG I agreed with like 99% of all yoiur takes - and I ujsually never agree with anyone :-) I feel like I am almost t meeting myself online here - I also have ADHD and love to knit etc. Only I am around 10 years older than you - I do feel like there was a certian Gen-X vibe to your video (huge compliment). Eg. wrt. reading patterns, hype around individual designers etc. - I don't get it... I have honestly never knittet a PetitKnit or My Favorite Things piece - and I am Danish.
I've been knitting for about a year and a half, not a crocheter, but very active on reddit. Saw some of this drama and loved this video breaking it down. Ironically I'm an engineer. Part of my skillset is problem solving. Part of the reason I like knitting is because patterns are like math problems, and sometimes you need to work them out yourself. Similar to you, I prefer a concise pattern. Give me the row number, the abbreviated pattern, and the final stitch count for that section. And I've also purchased patterns I haven't knit because I didn't love how it was written. Maybe I'll come back to it later, but also there are hundreds of thousands of patterns on ravelry. I'll just find another. The one thing you didn't mention for resourcing is LYS. The entire reason I still knit is because when I first started and ran into issues, I went to my LYS for help. Yes, it slows the process down, but it helped me learn. It's helped me keep going. Between ravelry, reddit, youtube tutorials, and my LYS, there is literally nothing I feel like I can't figure out how to make. But it DOES sometimes take time to figure out. It's part of the fun.
my great grandmother taught me to crochet when i was around 4/5. the only crochet patterns i knew were either stitches i learned from others or from magazines and blogs because i wanted to learn. i honestly don't think it's a pattern maker's responsibility to cater to your skill level and this new resurgence of crochet has made some newer crocheters feel too entitled to other people's time and effort.
If you look at the patterns, the 6-day refers to the baby size, not the adult size. That one is more 6 weeks or 6 months, depending on your speed.
I have a sticker that says Yes, I’m bilingual. I speak fluent 🧶. [(ch 5. Sc in next ch sp) twice, ch 5, sk next dc, dc in next d( ch 1, sk next dc, (ch 1, sk next dc, dc in next dc) 6 times] twice.
Im not a knitter or a crocheter , but i do have disabilities that made both a struggle for me to learn from my mother and grandma, and never in my 55 years would i expect the world to spin solely for me. Betty Mcknit has a new subscriber now ❤ because her voice deserves to be heard just as it is . Im over people acting like poor us, trust me, us differently abled people can do incredible things when we choose to not limit ourselves. We just need to do things different or ask for more help!
i recently knit a new pattern, i knit btw. and the pattern was rated as a semi difficult one, and there were many spots that i was like "what are they saying" or "how did my count end up off" and a bunch of other things, i just googled the stuff i was unclear on or that was written in a way that assumes you had already made a sweater like that before. Which is fine, i jumped into a new pattern, written for people who had done yoked sweaters bottom up before. I just looked things up, and tin can knits helped a lot with both text, pictures, and videos showing and explaining how to do the things.
would LOVE to see a video with examples on how to use stitch markers to count if you get the chance!! thanks for this video I feel so seen :) ❤
I have no idea how i got here but super interesting vid, loved this nuanced critique!
Loved this

I never write comments, by my goodness, you are speaking as much for someone like me as you are for Betty McKnit. I'm a college teacher, 58, and as I was watching your video, I kept thinking, "Betty McKnit is probably about my age" and "some of the comments the angry crafters made are so much like things I sometimes I hear from my college students." Thank you for your careful analysis.
nicely reasoned! || I started crochet this year and it's been a lot of fun! It's really cool how much material there is on the internet to teach you things (I appreciate videos v much). I also take 'the amount of time it takes to do something' with a giant grain of salt because it's like following some recipe, in which the chef is giving the speed it takes them to do it w/ lots of practice and pre-diced/ready ingredients, and so I expect to take that time x2 or 3
I think we have also lost the art of learning through failure. Literally the best way to learn imo but there is such a low tolerance.
I have dyslexia and adhd and know that I can't really follow standard written patterns. I have in the past asked big companies if they are planning on making a video, and I've had a good response to that. But if I find something I can't follow I normally will go and find a video. I can't follow videos without verbal explanations too, so I just go find a different one. My pet peeve with crochet (which is just how it is) is with the English vs American terms 😱 but know that's just a weird crochet quirk
Sitting here knitting from a library book right now. 27:18
Do I knit or crochet? No, not at all. But I was intrigued about how a community that seems so chill could have tea. Did not disappoint. Nice job!
Wow that was an amazing video. Thank you for sharing ❤
You are so welcome ❤️🩹❤️🩹
The problem here is the reason it looks like it is from an old pattern book or magazine is because it IS from an old pattern book or magazine. Betty McKnit did NOT create this pattern. She copied it from an old pattern book or magazine and is passing it off as her own work. This particular pattern is one of the old ubiquitous ones as well. Betty might as well have published "How to make a Granny Square" and said that because she published it on her blog she owns granny squares for all the more that she owns the star blanket.
This literally isn’t true. The ripple stitch is taken from a dictionary of ripple stitches by Jan Eaton, credited in the pattern. Betty does not claim to have invented the ripple stitch. She does not claim to own star blankets. She owns this pattern - the six day star blanket. Stop spreading gossip and slander about someone in a livelihood-threatening way just because you’ve decided you don’t like them - there’s no need for it and it’s incredibly toxic. There also seems to be confusion here between stitches, types of object, and patterns. When I write a sweater pattern, for a drop shoulder wide rib sweater, I do not claim to have invented wide rib, or drop shoulder construction, or sweaters. I just own the pattern for *that particular sweater*, that I designed. JFC. Pinning bc I am tired of this particular rumour and it needs to stop.
@CinemaKnits OMIGOSH! Thank you! I think I found my "trademark" blanket pattern somewhere in that book (200 Ripple Stitch Patterns)... I haven't been able to find it anywhere. I'm going to go look for it at my local library and see if I'm right, and credit Ms. Eaton properly. 💕
I absolutely did not copy the 6-Day Star from any old pattern book or magazine. On my own, I worked out how to adapt a chevron stitch in the round and make it lie flat and make it repeatable. If you’re going to say I copied it from something else, produce the thing I supposedly copied. You can’t. Because it doesn’t exist. There are many versions of crochet star blankets. This one is unique, and I made it.
I can’t handle the assertion that you stole a pattern from people who don’t know the difference between stitches, types of object and patterns. Currently writing my first garment pattern and I use a 6 by 8 rib (inspired by a Scandinavian camisole design), a drop shoulder construction and the dimensions of an 80s adidas sweatshirt. It’s my pattern, I designed it and did all the maths and figured out how to create decreases in pattern so the rib looks neat and how to switch between back and forth and in the round whilst also increasing and decreasing and shaping the sweater, and figured out how to grade it from XS to 5XL smoothly. But with this argument being made about the star blanket, someone could just copy and paste my pattern then tell me it’s derivative because I didn’t invent sweaters or 6x8 rib? It’s just fundamentally not understanding what design is.
If I did copy it from a magazine, which I didn’t, does that then make it okay for Brie to copy it from me? Or is she also a scammer for copying someone else’s work? Is copying okay or not?
I think it's very entitled to think a pattern maker should think a 1000 different possibilities just to make a pattern "inclusive and accessible" because 1. they're human and they don't know every single disability or difficulty people have with written patterns, and 2. it's not really her problem to deal with. For example, I'm a new crocheter, started this year (my grandma is over the moon she'll have someone to pass down the knowledge), and I'm trying a bunch of different things, but mostly I use video tutorials because I'm more visual, I like to have a visual reference to guide me. That said, I wanted to make a bear purse to a friend of mine but I was simply not understanding the video because it was in a fast pace and the crocheter kinda turn the work in a way I couldn't visualize the pattern the way I wanted. So what I did? Did I complained in the video she was terrible, an old hag that's not inclusive to new crocheters? No. I simply google it, found a written pattern, and tried to understand what I was supposed to do, and google was indeed my best friend because I encountered many stitches I didn't know about and instead of complaining with the patter maker I made an EFFORT to understand it. Is accessibility and inclusive manners important in the craft communities? Absolutely! But also... Sometimes you don't have the resources and need to "fend" for yourself. And it's not the other person fault if you can't make something, unless it's really poorly written. You're not OWNED a pattern by NO ONE. And that's a problem I see with some generations in tiktok. Also, you're on POINT about ageism and misoginy. Also, I'm making myself my crochet book on canva, referencing the original pattern makers but adapting it to my own liking so I can crochet anywhere I go even if I don't have internet, and that's fine. Distributing another person work, which she PROFITS ON, it's just so wrong.
Proletarian yarn LOL 😅😅😅
Was so proud of that joke tbh, I am glad it is landing
I love these kinds of videos while I knit only please don't call it yapping, i don't know who started using this word and i see it more and more in the crochet community, I think a better word is storytelling or venting or sharing because its a real talent to speak in front of the camera with such good flow, with details, with charisma, with vulnerability... me and millions others like to listen because its a wonderful storytime and not yapping 😅
I love the word yapping, it makes me so happy! I choose my words with purpose and enthusiasm! Thank you for watching ❤️
What is it with people insisting that they are being discriminated against because they haven’t learned the standard vocabulary of the topic? Everyone would think it’s really strange if a novice guitarist claimed a piece of sheet music for Greensleeves is ableist for being written with staves and notes instead of being written in tab notation
This is a very thoughtful video that shows that you did your research on this controversy and offer some constructive ideas! Personally, I have struggled with the written 6-dat star blanket, so I haven't made it yet. You have inspired me to try and fail until I get it!
I like to look at patterns before I make them, and thought I might make this one to join in the trend. The ads did make it hard for me to follow because I have a brain injury (SBI- Left frontal Lobectomy). However I did add the video tutorial to my Crochet project playlist, because it was much easier. (Haven't made it yet, and may not, just cause I don't want to bring this drama over to my channel, and I think this pattern will bring it) I may just pay for the pattern too. A lot of those crochet patterns written in prose form strike me (this is just my opinion) as from people who don't understand how to read or write patterns in the classic way. As I am still learning that too, I'm finding I like patterns written in the classic way too. Just the opinion of someone who is in the disabled community. Edit: Your right though, I creator can't please all of the people all of the time. There's just no way.
Thanks for sharing all of this, and your love of knitting and all it means to you. When we’re in a dark place, we sometimes just need the one little glimmer to grab onto, to guide us out. Knitting was like that for me these last few years, and I am so glad it is like that for you too: I had not quite formulated that for myself, and so your words and sharing has been like a mirror to show me how knitting has saved me too. It’s my north star. Here’s to taking chances and going minute by minute <3
✨❤️
Is it wrong to feel like a lot of the younger generation (I’m an 80s baby)…they either forgot or have never understood the concept of “ there is growth in struggle”…I do myself have a learning disability but growing up between the 80s-00s…I had to power through to become a functioning adult..I think playing the victim game isn’t helping you at all..
Currently continuing the main body, it's going pretty well! This is my first ever 'proper' knitting project (other than scarves) and I'm excited to see how it turns out :) I found picking up the stitches the hardest bit so far, really really fiddly... might be because my wool's a little thin? Thanks for such a great tutorial!!
@@oliviapayne3978 picking up stitches is really fiddly!! I am So glad you’re making it and please send me pics!!
Read her pattern. It's cool. It looks like the ones I grew up on. Of course, I could likely be the grandmother of many of her detractors.
In my brain, her pattern is just the way old patterns work. If you are not capable of deciphering that on the spot, simply take a pen and paper, decipher and write it down your own way so you can follow it that way. My point to all those who are complaining is, if YOU are unable to read it or make it work, that is YOUR problem. It's really nice that she's added all the disability things to her website. It's a cool thing for her to be available for you to ask her questions about her patterns. She didn't have to do any of those. Just like you can't just ask questions to the dead writer of a 200yo chrochet pattern or change the font in that book to be dyslexic friendly. If you really want to make the pattern, YOU make it work for YOU. 🤷🏼♀️🤷🏼♀️
I love the idea of the stitch markers for counting rows. Way back in the day I had a row counter, but also always forgot to push it. Right now, I literally just count my rows over and over, which works, but is time consuming. I think I’m going to try your method.
I do want a ball winder though. 😅 now that I have my mini minder I want everything in balls with holes in the middle.
Crafting cannot be frustration-free in my opinion and many crafters seem to avoid any frustration
She made a clear pattern, a free video tutorial AND offered an ad-free option and still got this? I've paid good money for patterns that it turned out aren't that well written but in my opinion working it out is part of the process. I think it's very weird to feel like you can get personal help from a pattern writer. I don't think we would expect book authors to answer all our questions about a book over dm, at least that seems like quite an entitled thing to expect even if you bought the book.
I was looking for something interesting to watch while knitting on my cable sweater and found your video, what a happy coincidence
I had to tap out halfway through just because this is reminding me way too much of all the storm-in-a-teacup drama I see in my own irl craft groups. Still, I felt the need to make an offering to the algorithm out of respect for your clear reasonable attitude. Will definitely have a look at your other videos that don't remind me too much of my own time being mediator between a dozen feuding needlecrafters all old enough to be my mother. Seems crochet drama is universal unfortunately.
Some of these complainers are giving me the same vibes as the people I see leaving super negative 1-star reviews on books of beginner friendly crochet patterns because they saw 'beginner friendly' and were expecting a step-by-step youtube tutorial that walks you through the entire process, and instead they got patterns that are fast, easy, and simple to do for people that aren't that skilled yet, but the book is still a pattern book and requires you to be able to read patterns.
I just turned 59 with a lifetime of being told I talk too much amongst other things. Then a few years ago even before 2020 I couldn't get up, didn't want to talk or socialise. I hit a hard wall at breakneck speed. I have since found out that it was ADHD burnout on top of trauma. 2 years ago I knew I needed to do something loving for myself more than just brush my teeth and have a shower. I'd been crocheting but had not knitted in a while. My first love was knitting which I learnt at 4 and then by around 19 it became something I did mostly for others. I realised I knit out of love and I really needed some. I love working with wool and decided to really get back into knitting, but for only for myself to help me get out of burnout. That led pretty quickly to joining an online knitting group and then another. I found my knitting bestie and a bunch of knitting friends. Joy has been working it's way back into my life one stitch at a time despite going through some of the harshest couple of years of my life since getting back into knitting. I have no plans to knit for anyone else, my knits are loving acts and right now they are taken up with loving me. I loved how much you shared in your video. Be you ALWAYS, there is nobody else who could ever do it better ❣ Anne🦘au

This felt like a hug and I really want to send one back to you 🤍
🤗
I’ve been thinking about starting a RUclips channel and telling myself all the things you said about why I shouldn’t. It’s so hard to get out of our own heads, isn’t it? Thanks for your honesty.
I agree that we should try to make instructions to crafts as accessible as a designer has access to. However, I think in addition to the instant gratification, the other large aspect is resiliency. I taught myself to crochet last year and it was a lot of frogging and understanding my mistakes. But it was also rewatching videos and googling things I didn’t understand. There is this lack of the ability to use critical thinking but also giving up when we are not instantly good at something.
My issue with the pattern was easily solved with a highlighter. I had to highlight the stitch types and where. On me.
I just love how you manage to articulate what you do and the knitting and everything!😊
Regarding ageism I think a lot of younger people describe older people as rude, short, and cold through online communication when it's really a generational difference. My mom responds to texts with "k" and in my generation (Millenial) that's passive aggressive but that's not how she means it. Economy of space was much more important in the past when communication was more limited. For instance telegrams (not the app) often used shorthand code and charged by the word, and early cell phones didn't have alphabet keyboards so typing a few letters was easier than a whole sentence. I'm not sure if younger generations don't know this or forget it but the odds are if an older person sounds rude they're probably not trying to be!
People have gotten impatient and then mad that it's not easy or fast or cheap; crafting takes time and effort and failure to a certain extent. You won't be good at first and need to practice, you may pick a slightly too hard project as a beginner and mess it up, you may waste money on a failed attempt; that's just the process and you gotta deal with it. I mainly sew/cosplay and embroider and I've noticed this attitude alot, and it makes me mad. Tik Tok has honestly been a big catalyst for these issues if you ask me. Crafting isn't meant to be some microtrend and it's super unhealthy to throw anything into the microtrend blender. It ruins everything and crafts is the last thing that needs that treatment; the beauty of crafting is the time it takes, the thoughtfulness of making something from scratch, the skills you learn through practicing to eventually make cool things, the years of being taught from others who volunteer their time and teaching yourself through resources you've found. I'm autistic and incredibly specific about what works for me, that's not a bad thing and it's also not anyone else's problem. Sometimes you gotta modify things yourself or find an alternative that works for you; only I understand my brain to the fullest extent and other than generally accepting helpful things (like that widget they added to their site), it's kinda unfair to immediately blame the other person for it not being a good fit for me. I think them adding the widget and agreeing to rewrite it shows that they care and want it to be accessible to as many as people as they can cater to within their means and it just seems unfair they got a bunch of Tik Tok drama about it.
where can i buy those wrist supports in the UK? any place thats not amazon? :o I would love to get some for when i work long hours on the PC as well! :D
On my latest video I have an affiliate link to them but it’s Amazon - you could always just reverse image search using the Amazon listing but the only other place I have found them when I was looking is AliExpress in bulk :(
Tbh the interest in them has been so high I wanna make my own now 😅
on so many occasions when i have bought or read a pattern, i have had to sit down and translate it into something I personally understand. Now, i put the details of the orginal pattern on the top of said page, and i dont share my book that i put it in, its for my personal use. because I do not expect people to write their stuff in something that i understand. Learning shuttle tatting, i have tried following written and drawn, and have found i mostly prefer drawn Pictures are great (at the end) to help me make sure i'm doing the right thing I mostly hate video format, I get a lot of information from my computer, I look at youtube and see a psudeo code of everything on its page, and how videos look to me is almost matrix like... Some people do a wonderful thing where the project is the only thing they are focusing on, and they will somehow write the pattern step they are on as well... some people talk and describe the how and why But mostly videos confuse the hecken out of me unless i already know what i'm doing and i'm just double checking.
