Giant almaco in Baja, spearfishing.

I spend 6 months per year in Baja and fish the sea of Cortez with my kayak. I get there when it’s very good, November, but then I spend 4 months fishing the hard stuff in colder water at ridiculous depts to catch the occasional fish. Seriously, don’t go to Baja in January or February thinking you will shoot a lot of fish. I usually leave about now, at the end of April. I must go back to work se...

Welcome to my latest tbar speargun prototype test! Yes a tbar, the sort of metal post used to hold small signs is used as the shaft. This one is a finished product that easily move, perfectly neutral and I think I got the power to mass right. Obviously this speargun h...

Speargun reel malfunction at 80 feet, what do you do?
Просмотров 849Год назад
Speargun reel malfunction is never fun, at 24 meters it can be catastrophic. I may have to chose between my gun and my life. So, I encounter the first school of yellowtail of the season. I’m at 24 meters, not an exceptional freediving dept, but then it depends what you have to do at 24 meters. My problem, one that can plagues all spearfishermen using reels, is that my reel line was tangled at t...

I spear and land an 80 pound almaco jack from my kayak, in baja The end of the winter is when I typically find large almaco jacks. I dove all over the place in very average visibility. Spearfishing at 18 to 24 meters of depth in the cold and not very lively water can be quite an ordeal but then the school of large almaco makes up for it. zıpkınla balık avı for sure

MERCI MON AMI
Hey what’s up buddy where are you ?
Akulivik (in the arctic)
I think rollers are highly overrated relative to a well set up traditional gun with a reverse mech. Even the results Rob allen got in his shaft velocity tests seem to agree imo. The juice isn’t worth the squeeze unless you really do want or like the no recoil, which is an advantage no doubt
Nice video. I subscribed! 🐟🐠🤿🔥💥
they aren't dying fool
Hell yeah!
Thank you for show and explain sir; 2 T up .
Great video. Do u tune your flopper on shaft? Also what length bands are u using, are they 14mm?
I never use slip tips (I have five from 4 differents manufacturers). The elastics are 16 mm Primeline at 350%.
how does this only have 8 likes I cant belive people nowin day don't have any poggers for the skill of shooting a fish underwater and the way you were able to get two of them was super impressive i just imagine bring these two fish home and sharing these with friends and family telling them how you got them
Problem with this is that you used a wooden roller. Among makers, Wooden roller are known for the difficultty to find the right configuration. Most of the time it ended up being underpower. One maker told me, that the key here is to find the best stretch and the best diameters for different types of shaft thickness and weight. The best one to start, he said, is 7.5 shft and 16 mm at 350%. Even with those setting, the shots mostly inconsistent. Wooden roller has become some short of litmus test for a speargun maker. Therefore it's very rare you see someone using wooden roller, most used multiple banded convent or a inverted roller. The rollers we see mostly used are barreled, carbon or alumunium. I have a twin banded RA 120 tuna, that i sometimes exchange the muzzle with a roller one, the difference is night and day.
59 HOURS???!! Well worth it... we missed your vids... Awesome!
LOL 18m -not very deep, It's all relative 😁. Lovely fish. Observationally, all fish shot in this place will tear themselves up - on the upside saves cleaning them LOL. I am speaking from a place of way to much experience shooting them in the gut 😁🤣😳. I might even be an expert in this subject LMAO! 😆😆. Oh well. Great video, nice to watch! Have a ripper week, cheers for sharing the laughs! Dive safe, have fun! 🍻🤿
how has it been diving the sea of cortez with the warmer waters this year?
All through january we had water at 22C - 21C, instead of 19 to 17C. So that's an insane difference. We've had more cabrillas than any other year, sadly very few yellowtails and mackerels. It's not good for fishing in general. I guess the fish will eventually adapt to these new conditions.
How much ground do you typically cover or how much time do you spend padding to and from the hunting grounds on a typical kayak outing down there?
This particular spot takes about 60 minutes to get to. Paddling time can range from 20 to 90 minutes (my favorites spots are all beyond 50 minutes). I guess you have to get away from the frey to find good spots.
I stay about 300 m from my kayak, mostly, and I'll change spots once or twice.
Rad. Need to get down there with my scupper pro sometime
360p ? wtf dude
it's 4k, you saw it before it got processed jajajaja sorry
LOL, it is what happens when you are too keen to watch a video LOL! 👍😁
Got to love this sport, always nature putting on a show for us! This was very cool, the baby whales playing were awesome. Thanks for sharing the video, Dive safe, have fun! 🐋🐳👍🤿🍻
Beautiful!
Let's go diving!
Big fan here Rene, two things. 1. What do you mean braid you to death? 2. 3 months spearfishing and droping 20+ meters, how do you train the rest of year?
abraid as in abrasion, those barnacles would probably take all the skin off your body if a whale felt on you.
Spearfishing deep is "safe" only if you spent the years practicing. I have to say that even after having stayed on land for a while, I get back to fishing deep without too much time. I don't really struggle with depth before I reach 25 meters, but past 32 meters is too deep for me unless I'm in warm water without a thick wetsuit... I can do it, but I doubt I'm safe past 30 meters.
Well done on the video, very enjoyable to watch. The excitement is hard to control when under water LOL. Thanks for sharing the video. Dive safe, have fun! 🙏👍🤗
can you please make a video on how to make the trigger mecanisem thanks
I should make one, but i may get in trouble if someone "fails". That said I should make one explaining the workings and the principles that make a mech, what you do with that info would then be on you jajajajaja
Why is there so much diversity and density in Baja and as far as I know the fishing regulations are very lax to non existent. And in California there are regs up the yin Yang and there are very few fish in my estimation. It’s probably impossible to compare the regions. Idk. Maybe because Baja is so much more rural?
Fish density in Baja is falling down at a very fast pace, the poaching is fantastically efficient and financed by the local institutions... In 10 years there will be nothing left, don't worry. Florida has a lot more fish than Baja now, because of the enforcement...
belle vidéo et jolis tirs
Moray eel did the cleaning...
Awesome! What area is this?
sueno mostly
How do you like to cook the different species you catch here?
How deep are you diving here?
most spots in that video were 'shalow', so like 70 feet.
Yeeeeaaahhh Buddy! Looking forward to watching this seasons batch of adventures
OK this is insane
Splendid!!
@Rene..do you have new vids of a properly powered roller vs trad?
I should, but I feel the time of the rollers is pretty much over lol. The good ones will continue to be used, but the almost religious beliefs in attributes that defied physics did not survive the test of actual use by a lot of people. We now know what to expect. BTW, that small gun was overpowered. It had a ratio of 3.7. It works better at 3.4, but no magic.
What is powerful speargun invert or standard
Thanks! I’m getting ready to buy a roller gun OR an inverted roller gun.
I'd go with an inverted. I see more of a difference with them. I only tested small sizes though.
@@potvinr the concept is brilliant and the mechanical advantage would make it easier to load. Thanks!
I see you always use floppers. How often do you lose fish? I guess not often or you wouldn't use them. I seem to lose too many fish on floppers - even when they are well tuned. So, I've moved to slip tips which takes me out of the game on some opportunities for fear of messing up my tips.
Yeah, havent lost anything because of the flopper in a long while, no yellowtail, no wahoo, it's all about shot placement ;)
@@potvinr Now you tell me 😂!!
seems obvious but really knowing where that shaft is going is rather important. Many guns are not super well balanced... Most Riffe's come to mind jajajaja The newer Riffes are ok but the older stuff, omg@@goyo2897
You can hold your breath along time. I'm heading down to LV for most of October, hope to try this. Thank you for sharing!
super hot in october, but the fish is there. also the water is warm enough to fish with minimal neoprene.
Hey I love watching your videos I wanted to ask what is the biggest barred pargo you have shot? Recently I went to la Paz off a shore dive I shot a pretty big monster not knowing how hard they are too shoot and not knowing what type of fish it was but sure enough after some research it was a really big barred pargo. Anyway I was curious to see what your personal best barred pargo was.
I shot a few over 20 pounds, i think my largest was 25
Oh wow that’s definitely big hahaha I didn’t weigh mine because I didn’t have a freaking scale :( but it was 26 inches and I got a few pics. Anyway thanks for responding I love your videos they make me wanna go back to la Paz.
I just took one of those big triggers the other day up at Isla San Jose. I wasn't paying attention when swimming it back to the boat and It bit me so bad on the stomach that completely broke the skin and left a huge bruise. Felt lucky it didn't bite me somewhere else...Those things don't mess around!! Really enjoying learning the waters here around La Paz. Thanks for your videos Rene.
When you get back next year let me know. I live in La Paz year round I just found your channel
For sure, november
"promosm" 💪
Incredible fish. Could you share your you like to prepare the fish? Maybe a catch and cook video? Thanks
Grab it by the tail! 😂
Works with sturgen fish! So why not?
I wonder if maybe some heat shrink tubing over the crimp would help. I noticed you don’t have a gasket on the scupper pro hatch opening. If you’re shoving fish like that in there regularly, not surprising at all hahaha
The scupper needs no tubing or straps jajajajaja, maybe for surf exits, which i dont often do...
You need a bigger boat!🤣⚓
Very difficult resisting the pull of Jaws
Cool video! I am in La Ventana near La Paz. What is the best way to contact you?
I'm in montreal now. I left last week. You can find me on facebook or here.
I think AJs are my favorite fish to hunt. They are strong, fight hard, and taste great! I'm headed to an "undisclosed location" in Baja on Monday and I hope to have a chance with one of those!
AJ as in almaco jack, the amberjacks are not that good and i really dont like worms jajajajaja fussy eater here
@@potvinr we only have almaco jack in the east pacific
Not a bad problem to have! Fit in the kayak like a glove 😂
Every year i tell myself to bring a larger kayak lol
Best spot. Best crew!
What's a good size gun for pargo and cabrilla. Thanks
In baja, cortez side, i'd say 130. No smaller that 120.
Nice shot! What type of gun and who made it.
I make my own guns and mecanisms. Here you see a padook 130 with two bands (16mm primeline at 350%) with a 7 mm Rob Allen shaft. You also see a 150 cm iroko speargun I made 15 years ago. It has three bands and a 7.5 mm spearmaster shaft.
@@potvinr beautiful work! Haven't down to baja in 12 yrs. Might be a good time to plan a trip. Thanks
@@ebadd3468 you will find a lot less fish than 12 years ago, the drop in 6 years has been monumental
Great Vid! Nice shooting!
Awesome video. Remind me my spearfishing adventures. Cheers !
