This is without question the #1 episode. But I would not introduce this episode for someone who has never seen MITM. But instead have them warm up several episodes first, then have them watch this masterpiece. Or start them from the very beginning.

My favourite outta the trilogy. I watched the musicals in reverse order and it made me appreciate the earlier ones all the better. But black friday just holds a special place in my heart

Though like your idea of WHY he hates musicals, I despise the idea that that’s when he’s finally happy, I think one of the reasons he doesn’t really have a “want” is that he’s already happy, like he said, he likes hatchet field, he never wanted to leave, he’s content with his life, obviously he wants to get with Emma but, he doesn’t have some drive, he’s happy with his life, I also kinda head cannon that the reason the aliens act like the people and do stuff like that isn’t the people still being there and conscious, it’s just the aliens sorta taking their memories, and using that to manipulate those around them, and the reason they don’t do that with Paul during inevitable is because, they will overpower Emma, they’ve already won, she’s lost, and Pokotho/Pokey/The Alien hive mind, is just so gleeful that they finally gained control of him. This is an old video but one thing that I’ve never seen discussed is that the intruders that come in during “Show stopin’ number”from both sides where as Paul only comes in and leaves from one side. This caused a few people to say that Hidgens got this EXACT scenario because he saw it before and that “working boys” was about real friends and some real events. The real events could be that he has locked his dead alien friend in the basement hence the “you haven’t aged a day” comment. That’s my English Alevel at work

I still find the ending of the show incredibly sad. Even if there’s still parts of the people in there, the infected people aren’t really themselves in my opinion. They’re a hive mind and can never fully be individuals again. The thought of that inevitably happening to everyone on earth is awful! Great show though lol

I really love that you did this! Black Friday might be my least favorite HF entry, but that's not because it isn't good (it is really good, actually) but because the other entries were way more fleshed out. The fact that it was too ambitious is by no means the worst problem that it could have had. The fact that it didn't get the rewrite it desperately needed is sad actually but I like how it did what it did!

It's weird how even if Parappa doesn't have the deepest and darkest stories they still managed to be nuanced. Honestly thanks to Parappa 2's story specifically I now have the courage to get a job, do fandubs, go out on dates and most importantly BELIEVE IN MYSELF! Edit: I even started rapping, because of how Parappa influenced my life and this is special video to me❤

we find out in the 'nightmare time' episode 'watcher world' that alice does actually feel that way about bill but still wants to him to be in her life despite how poor of a father hed been to her before. their relationship is my roman empire i think about them way too often. 'queer kid with father issues' is a trope that speaks so much to me... also, during 'join us and die' charlotte also says "your own body is your front-row seat" basically just telling us that the person infected is fully conscious but is trapped n has no control over what they do or say

I don't like Black Friday. I like a lot of parts, but as a whole, it didn't really come together that well in my opinion. There were some great songs and also some incredibly boring ones. Honestly, in my opinion, it felt like they were doing too much at once with this one. It also felt to me, like it was a little pretentious? The whole materialism thing just kinda feels like making the whole thing about a kind of half-baked "message." Which is fine, if the message was as deep as they thought it was. Even the best songs had parts that kinda ruined them, and overall, its just one of my least favorites. I think in the development of this one, they were trying to intentionally manufacture a "magnum opus", and it really just doesn't have that same star kid feel, in my opinion. Also, am I the only one that wants the whole hatchet field thing to end already? I just want some new funny musicals that don't have all this interconnected lore and can just tell a nice story.

Lots of people keep saying that they are different universes. I disagree. In nightmare time we learn that when someone dies their clone replaces them. Also, when Ted got stuck in the past he only did so in one universe and one timeline. In other words, anything that shows or mentions the existence of homeless Ted is happening in the same timeline and universe.

I 100% headcanon Paul as autistic, with one of my reasons why actually being his hatred of musicals. As an autistic person with bad sensory issues related to sound, live musicals can be very overwhelming without being prepared. Paul doesn’t seem annoyed by the singing, but rather confused, frightened, and overwhelmed, things most introverted people with noise sensitivities would feel in that same situation. It’s like a pep rally at school, everyone shouting and cheering around you for nearly an hour is, like Paul said, my own personal hell. Of course, Paul’s reaction to the musical numbers isn’t my only reason to believe he’s on the spectrum. Things such as his bluntness, his lack of eye contact, his antisocialness, him copying others mannerisms, and even his nervous stimming (rubbing his fingers together when he’s next to Ted at the beginning). In conclusion, as an autistic person, I believe that Paul Matthew’s is autistic as well. Okay now I gotta get to class byeee

What a GREAT video! I didn't catch that the conflict over surveillance can be a metaphor for the closet when I first watched the musical. It seems so simple and yet it completely flew over my head. Thank you for the great work! Immediately subscribed!

So idk if this is relevant, but it is something I like to think about. We know from future shows that Pokey was behind the apotheosis, and in nerdy prudes must die, he is represented in a theatre mask and stereotypical “director” type outfit. I actually watched Black Friday and Nerdy prides must die before I ever watched tgwdlm and so I went in with a certain amount of spoilers and knowledge on what was happening and because of that, I noticed that at the beginning of the show, the aliens didn’t seem to actively want to infect Paul as much as they lead him to believe. The opener talks about all of the classic characteristics of a hero, which Paul doesn’t seem to have many of when we first meet him. Mr Davidson calls him into his office seemingly to put him through apotheosis, yet instead just sings at Paul about how he should find something to want for. Despite being part of the hive mind, he manages to get off track and Paul escapes, which you’d think the hive mind would be able to stop especially since it is so early on and Paul has no idea how to combat it or even that he has to. I mean the others told him that Mr. Davidson had started calling others into his office after Paul and every one of them came out singing, so Paul is apparently the only one who managed to escape? And again and again they seem to escape from these situations that seem like they shouldn’t as the people around Paul and Emma are picked off. So my theory is that Pokey knew that Hatchetfield was an easy target and he would have very little resistance, but that wasnt the epic story he wanted. He wanted something to fight against or else it would have just been boring, so he purposefully let Paul go multiple times and egged him into admitting his wants and becoming the “hero” of the story. I’ve also considered that it could also be a similar idea, but that the hive mind easier infects people who have wants to exploit as it gives them what they want in return for their bodies. However Paul has resigned himself to the fact that he will live and die in hatchetfield working a 9-5 office job and occasionally flirting with the barista in his coffee shop, and never having any further aspirations. So to combat that, the aliens have to get Paul to want something more than what he already has in order to overtake him.

awesome video!!! loved seeing that take on the final scene, i hadn't thought about the dichotomy between owen and curt pertatining to the intelligence technology before. would definitely recommend watching more of the TCB universe! they have so much cool stuff and it's all great.

Man, I remember really liking Spies Are Forever, and I still remember the big twists and listen to the soundtrack now and then, but I’d forgotten about a lot of the nuances! This is a great analysis. I haven’t watched every Tin Can Bros thing either, but I remember the Solve-It Squad being fun! If you though Joey Richter was breaking his back playing everyone in Trail to Oregon, then Brian Rosenthall is absolutely shattering his spine carrying the Solve-It Squad’s ensemble.
