    Design and engineering inadequacies creeping into all of these, so called off road vehicles. The point in case was the steep decent off Pats Peak, where all cars where on brakes, no retardation from gearing/transmission. High geared? Lack of sufficient low range gearing? No torque convertor lock up? How were they going to be driven home in the event of a brake failure? An over reliance on brakes, which BTY, all of the safety systems operate through the ABS. I'd put money on a series 1 Landrover driving down there without any brake input at all! Modern vehicles are losing the off-road cred. Or perhaps this rash of modern design engineers, do not know what off-road driving requires?

    Why does the Triton still have 2WD? 1. Fuel Economy 2. Drive Line Wear / Maintenance 3. Tyre Wear and less tyre rotations 4. It’s amazing how far you can go without needing 4H

    • @loaded4x4store82
      @loaded4x4store82 2 года назад

      2H v 4H there is hardly any difference in fuel economy, in my experience it's imperceptible, in Triton, Pajero and Pajero Sport. Driveline wear differences between the two would be negligible as the front driveshafts and part of the diff are still rotating, it's not like an old fashioned part time 4WD system with hub locks which isolate the driveshafts, diff and front prop. Tyre wear is no different between 2H and 4H at all in my experience, Mitsubishi's wheel alignment settings cause the only premature tyre wear issues. Get the alignment right and the tyres wear fine. 4H is safer for a few reasons but also removes an off-the-line drivetrain vibration that many MRs suffer from in 2H, most likely because less torque is pumped through the two piece rear tailshaft.

    Looking at that Milford tow bar, the towing plug isn't attached any better than OEM. A couple of little screws is worse than welding. Also as somebody who deals with stainless steel all the time, the end of that pin looks like it will bend really easily with it being reduced in diametre so much. Also I've never used the anti vibration screws, because I don't see why you'd leave the tongue in long term if it's not being used.

    • @davidwilson147
      @davidwilson147 2 года назад

      Thanks for your observations but a couple of points of difference. The tow plugs are more secure on the Milford1 towbar as they are located on either the RHS or LHS of the receiver tube BUT on the triangulation bracing plate where they won't get wiped out on the first exit when off-roading. They are protected. The genuine bar's flat tab is flimsy and easily bent out of shape. Regarding the securing pin, there is no way that the pin is going to get bent at the reduction point where the R-clip is installed, because there will never be a force imposed on it and changing direction. It'll only ever be installed running straight and true and can't get bent. There is plenty of meat there for the R-clip to rest on and I'd wager it'll still be intact, long after the vehicle it was attached to, has gone to the big auto scrapheap in the sky. Re the anti-rattle bolts. Yep, some folk are smart enough to remove their tow hitches entirely and only use them when towing, but the overwhelming majority (like 99%) are lazy and leave it in situ, where it seizes through corrosion. On that day when you want to remove the hitch the bolt shears and that'll be the gotcha moment!

    Sorry lads....the underlying problem remains unaddressed.... A vehicle with a GVM that is less than the ATM of the trailer (regardless of what band-aid measures are employed) is fundamentally UNSAFE. Much has been written and video'd in regard to this matter. If you tow a trailer that is big/heavy enough to require the use of WDH etc, you are skating on thin ice (in my opinion). As you may recall, I drive a Chevy with a GVM of almost 5,200kg and a GCM of over 11,000kg. I feel that the caravan I tow with its 3,500kg ATM, is about the limit for a pig trailer as far as ratios are concerned. I could never in all good conscience, recommend anybody tow a trailer that weighs more than about 75% of the gross weight of the tow vehicle. The results speak for themselves on the MANY MANY youtube videos showing rolled combinations on good quality, straight, sealed roads.
