Modular Curiosity documents my journey of learning about the process of modular synthesis. I'm using the free software synth VCV Rack as my instrument. As I learn, I like sharing my experiences with you. Let's learn together shall we?
Build a patch With Marbles
The brilliant pianist Nahre Sol just released a video on "how to sound like Steve Reich".
ruclips.net/video/PsKP_dpNlxg/видео.html
I've been a fan of Reich, Glass, and other minimalist composers for years. The interplay between counterpoint lines in Reich's music made me think that two Marbles modules would be perfect to generate that type of music. So I start from scratch, and build out a complete patch using 2 Marbles to produce rhythmic interplay between 2 voices. When you then add in the Bernoulli gate aspect of Marbles and bring in additional voices, all of which are modifiable via the spread, bias, and Deja Vu knobs, you have an amazing machine and an amazing patch.
Enjoy...

Marbles, A.K.A. The Random Sampler
Просмотров 10 тыс.5 лет назад
The Audible Instrument's "Random Sampler" is a port of the Mutable Instruments "Marbles". This is an amazing module which you can think of as being 3 Turing Machines. But that's really just scratching the surface of what it can do. You can lock in patterns on the trigger side and/or voltage side independently. You can make drum patterns, you can create new melodies, you can modify the scales in...

Modular Deconstruction Episode 1
Просмотров 2,4 тыс.5 лет назад
Modular Deconstruction is a new series where we look at other artist's playing modular synthesizers and then deconstruct their patch and attempt to replicate it within VCV Rack. In our first episode we study episode 5 from the amazing Modular On The Roof Series. ruclips.net/video/DxREYrYK6SI/видео.html Nick Kwas runs Modular on the Roof and in this video it's Nick Himself with his modular rig b...

Erica Synths Pico Drums

I really like this module. Two drum sounds simultaneously from a library of 64. CV control of patch selection, pitch, volume and decay. There's a lot of possibilities here. I hope you enjoy it!
Erica Synths : Octosource Octo-LFO
Просмотров 1,8 тыс.5 лет назад
The Erica Synths Octosource is an LFO with 8 phase shifted wave sources, but it's so much more. You can choose the wave forms, you can modify the phase shift, it's just a tone of fun. You know I like cool LFOs and this may be my new favorite.
Season2, Ep 9 : The Cloud Generator module
Просмотров 2,3 тыс.5 лет назад
The Cloud generator is a single module with up to 8 oscillators which can be place slightly out of tune to each other for an amazing chorus type of effect. But there's more. You can also adjust the spread of the voices to create some really interesting chord like harmonies.
Season2 Ep8 : VCV Rack Version 1.0 is here!
Просмотров 2,1 тыс.5 лет назад
Version 1.0 is here! And the wait was worth it. We now have polyphonic modules, really useful MIDI continuous controller mapping, and some great quality of life upgrades. In this video we take you from installation through all the new features with sample patches as well. Stay Curious.
Season 2 Episode7 : Comparators
Просмотров 2 тыс.5 лет назад
The simple comparator module may become one of your new favorite tools. It seems simple: compare an input to a threshold and send a gate for as long as the signal is higher. But there's so much more.
Season 2, Episode 6 With Turing Machine to generate melodies

Season 2, Episode 5 : Portland Weather / Rainmaker
Просмотров 4,4 тыс.5 лет назад
Could a delay line become your favorite new module? If it's this module I think it could! The Portland Weather by Frozen Wastelands is the VCV Rack version of Intellijel's amazing Rainmaker delay. Pitch shifing, muting, delay stacking, rhythmic variation, and much much MUCH more is all available to you with this module.

Epic!
This is epic! I followed along!
Well done for this very comprehensive detailed review of this very useful module with infinite possibilities👍🏻
Nice
Nice explanation
came here to learn a little about vcv rack AND I SEE FACTORIO!!!
this is the best explanation so far ive found, thanks
Thank you very much. I'm glad you enjoyed it.
The best explanation
Fascinating! How he dreamed those sounds up is amazing to me.
Thanks a lot for the explanation!
Thanks for the great video, amazing! A few questions please as i would like to recreate this patch. what are the modules off screen , why can't i find the clock module in the video anywhere or the white version of portland weather for that matter? I have found blue version which i am hoping will function the same, i am new to vcv and would really appreciate it, thanks
This video was from so long ago that some of the modules are no longer available. But any clock should work. Even an LFO with a square wave will work as a clock. I like Simple Clock from JW Modules for a basic clock. Frozen Wasteland did an update of the Portland Weather with a black background and lots of memory management cleanup. So if you use the new one you probably won't have the crashes I had in the video. That's why you don't see the white version. Some of the features may have subtly changed but it should be pretty close. Have Fun!
@@modularcuriosity Hey thanks for the reply i really appreciate it , all the best!
Hey man, I started my journey with Omri's videos and yours, top 2 for sure for the OG's!! Thanks for the lessons. I hope all is well... and that you'll be back... I took a 3-year break, too!
ahahahha thank you
This may help people. I have ver 2.4.1 free and it took way too much Googling to find how to get sound to the output device. So here are the steps. When you first start VCVRack, on the top line of the racks look to the left for the MIDI + CV rack. Immediately under that is a black rectangle labeled MIDI driver in orange lettering. Click that and select Computer Keyboard. Click the next black rectangle under that, which is probably labelled MIDI device. Select QWERTY keyboard so the QWERTY and ZXCVB keys will make sounds. On the third black rectangle down, make sure it says All channels. Now if you hit the QWERTY keys on your keyboard, you should see some activity in the scope on the top right rack, but may not hear anything yet. Next, look to the the top right rack, labelled AUDIO. Immediately under that label is a black rectangle that likely says "No Device". Click that. That gives you an options menu to connect with Windows output devices. For me, what worked is WSAPI, my sound device Yours might be speakers/headphones, for example), 48 kHz., 256 block size. Now I could play stuff using the keyboard. Going back to the MIDI + CV rack, there are also options to set in each of the three rectangles for using a MIDI keyboard, if you prefer that.
5:00 I im not mistaken, you could have used A*B+C as the VCA here, right?
Nice explanation!
Such a handy video :D
Agree with the last comment, these lessons are amazing. I have just done Omri's Basic Modular course. It is very, very good! Ohh Yeah ;-)
Nifty track (:
This is actually very interesting, especially the east coast, west coast music thing. 👍
The first time I saw this video I was driving so I was just listening and those marbles in the beginning annoyed the hell out of me. After actually watching this it is the most useful video!!! Thank you.
Rampage is a great envelope/function generator. I don't see a lot of people.uaing Drunken Rampage (3rd party module with probability added).
Rings is a lot of fun especially with two of them
Too bad you did not run everything through the scope - sometimes thats all i do with modular, i need and enjoy the visual side of that.
This is so good your videos just opened up new ideas for me i m still a beginner in vcv
Thank you very much. I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Thanks for a great tutorial :) This module is now so much more approachable than at first glance!
Thank you so much. Glad you enjoyed it.
I love this channel. It’s so informative and thorough. You deserve all of the positivity
You sound a little like that guy on the Taofledermaus channel (if a bit younger 😄). He experiments with things too: the weirdest and gnarliest SHOTGUN SLUG designs ever known! 😆😆😊
Nice! I'll have to check him out. And thanks for thinking I'm the younger one ;-)
Might have to try this somehow. I’m a little new at this, but wondering if there’s a way to apply a Paulstretch effect on miRack, VCV Rack…I don’t want to have to run stuff through Audacity all the time! 😄😄
Really good tip about the waveform 💯🌟
Your tutorials are incredibly helpful. I received an ARP 2600 and by watching your channel I’m being able to explore my instrument with much more accuracy! Keep on the grate work!
Thank you so much!
this is excellent. thank you. I am new to modular, own tides, and had no idea what to do with it
love these videos! hope you are doing well.
Adam Sandler AKA Random Sampler
lol
Excellent tutorial! Relaxed pace, good choice of waveforms. Better than the manual😊
Thank you very much!
1:20 Chopin/Manilow ;-)
Yep. Chopin 🙂
Thanks for this. Now with VCV 2, the modules are a bit different. I'm a total newbie and still trying to figure out how to create a simple patch with midi keyboard input from scratch. I got it so that the keyboard works but there is constant sound, it starts before I play a key and continues after I rele4ase the key. Trying to find a tutorial that instructs how to properly set this up.
Holy shit, this is amazing, thank you!
Awesome Thank you!
Thank you for the demo! I had no idea that there was a metropolis copy on here. I have been looking for this particular sequencer for awhile, and finding it has given me the inspiration that I have been looking for all day. Thanks again! :)
Спасибо!
watching this at 2x is tough...
Thanks now I know how to actually use it
I'm glad it helped :-)
thnks mister. just how it should be for naps like me. slow enough and with explanation of all steps
Top content !
lol
Enjoying your videos.
What a great time to be alive!
Excellent.
There’s another way to do this, possibly easier, using VCV Bridge. Omri Cohen has a vid that describes it, and how to get a copy of vcv bridge. In Reaper, you have Bridge on one track, and you use Port 2 or beyond. Port 1 is weird. On a second track, you record the MIDI, and send it to the vcv bridge track via the routing controls. It works very well. I also use ReaControlMIDI to map parameters. Same deal, send MIDI to bridge track.
