Personal commentary, wall of text warning. Okay, in all seriousness, it's actually physically painful for me to go back and listen to my old covers with Fukase because *everything* has aged. My tuning, lyric writing, mixing, and video editing all have improved, and I find it pretty interesting that I've written about getting better at them over the course of several videos too. Starting off with the vocals really fast, Fukase’s accent sounds really nice! I still use phoneme editing a lot, but a good chunk of it came from me learning how to use the Velocity and Openness/Mouth parameter effectively, and manipulating the Gen factor really helps out with formants. For mixing, I basically used the same workflow from Hunch Gray, using OTT as a Soundgoodizer alternative, but this time also using an extra plugin called Fresh Air to make Fukase sound breathier for this particular song. Making the video was also pretty interesting-I wanted the video to have a washi tape aesthetic like how the art for Miku's version sort of has, but also have a little more motion. Since Davinci Resolve’s particle engine won't let me use custom textures from as far as I know, I rendered the falling Xs using Blender and then brought it back to Resolve to composite and edit. Translyrics wise, my approach is pretty similar from Otome Kaibou where I just straight up had fun coming up with all of the rhymes. There are some prominent parts in each chorus where I had to really think hard on how to best portray the original meaning in a way that made sense and sounded nice, and I'll put a link to the subs if you want to compare them for yourself. I'll say this though; since uploading my first english covers, I've written translyrics for more songs than I could ever possibly make covers for, and if I've learned one thing I'd say that it's fine to be a little looser on syllable count and timing if it makes it more singable in english. Personal Commentary Wall of text warning like always! I was sort of experimenting around with Oliver in japanese and before I knew it I tuned a whole cover. After figuring out what phonemes to substitute, tuning in Japanese was pretty quick. I didn’t have to worry about word transitions and took the time to study realism and dynamics, so I hope you'll get to hear what I learned in future English covers ^^ I also want to add that my mixing ability peaked in this cover. I kept my promise from otome kaibou and was more light on adding color/harmonics this time around, and at long last I FINALLY figured out how to get a soundgoodizer-esque sound in logic using xfer’s ott compressor. End result is that these are probably the nicest my vocals have ever sounded. Timestamps: 0:00 - So I did something I haven't done since Carefree BF and Tomboyish GF, and that was to go into the vocaloid editor and make some custom breaths, the reason being that Oliver didn't have any gasps for rock music, and v5's auto breath feature clashed horribly with his voice. This time I did a better job at making them audible. I'd say 2/3 of the breaths you hear are 100% synthesized. 0:50 - I recently got the sonnox vocal doubler and thought this would be the perfect time to use it! Before, I was really struggling to double voices realistically with logic pro's stock plugins but sonnox simplifies it to the point where even the default setting sounds good. As it was just a test run, I mixed them rather softly even during the boran bit at the end;; 2:18 and beyond - If you think you heard growl, you heard it right. I kept them brief though because of the genre being light. If you wanna know how I did it, I did a mini tutorial thing on Twitter of which I'll link in the description. And once again, that concludes my notes for this cover. I'd love to tune another Japanese song one day, but I'm addicted to complexity so it's back to English for a while, haha. As for what Japanese vocaloid that Oliver sounds like, I’d say he (vaguely) sounds like a hybrid between Flower and Miku, but what do you think? I’ve said this so many time before on other channels and I say it again. Finding “English Vocaloid Cover” is so rare. I’ve seen Chinese and Vietnamese Cover that uses Vocaloid, but the majority of English Cover are from actual people, which is good but I would love more English Vocaloid Cover.

Personal Commentary Major wall of text warning. This time around I didn't feel the need for time stamps so I wrote 4.5 disjointed paragraphs instead. Going back to tuning Miku after tuning Rin was a little weird to say the least. I've gotten better at tuning Japanese English Vocaloids in general thanks to Rin, but I still had to re-learn some things because none of my JP EN vocas have a consistent base accent to work with. TvT Despite this, Miku does sound loads better than the first covers I did with her, so I'm excited to see how my use of her will improve in the future! Regarding the lyrics, Deco had a cool internal rhyme scheme for the original, so I tried to capture that and maybe went a little overboard adding more. The lyrics ended up being pretty frank in describing the speakers feelings, but it's not unfitting for the overall meaning of the song I think;;. I did however, alter my original draft based on Miku V4's ability to actually sing them, haha. A more benign example would be using "PK" instead of "shootout" because she sounded cuter, but there is the "br-" sound curiously missing from the lyrics... I tried following Mitchie M's blog tutorials when mixing the vocals this time around, and I must say, he knew what he was doing when he recommended using Logic's Studio VCA compressor, among other things. Overall, I ended up with a pretty clean sound, but I wonder if me deviating from the tutorial to add in extra harmonics at the end made it a little too harsh? I'll try to be more subtle in the future, but it's not bad considering that I mixed this in a single day. For being a still image, I also really love how much depth the lyric video ended up having! I used two separate noise generators to create a shifting light effect across the entire video, but the hair and flowers use a more turbulent one. If you speed up the video by 2x, you can see the difference in motion better. Also, sparkles. I managed to put all of this together in a single day, too! Though of course I spent a lot more time on the actual illustration;; In the end, there have just been general improvements all around for me, and I couldn't be happier with making this cover my birthday gift to Miku!
