    I have a ton of ancestors in the old cemetery. The most recent being my aunt, who passed in 2009. We lived in several homes within a block or two and it was always scary to walk past at night. But great for hide and go seek during the day.

    My mom graduated from that high school in '60. I went to 9th grade there in the late seventies. You're right about the location of the old wood shop. I had a class in there.

    It was a lot nicer in the sixties and seventies, during my childhood. But there always extreme poverty. I'm a descendant of the Daire family, early town settlers. And Fontenot of course, but who isn't. LOL

    Great video guys. Wish yaw would make these more often. The first 1,000 subscribers is like pulling teeth, but you will eventually get there. LOL, I know yaw really wanted to remark about the "brother" that was stumbling all over the side of the road...please do next time.

    Keep up the good work and please keep plugging away at showing, hopefully, eventually, All the small towns in Louisiana. Bunkie is trying to make a comeback. i really hope this once nice quaint town (50 years ago, that is!) makes a full recovery. But, with all the "White Flight" that has happened and still happening, there's only so much a few caring townsfolk can do with their money. So far, just the Mainstreet is looking much better. With so many poor blacks now in the majority....this town might be doomed. These folks could not care any less about their town even if they hit the lottery. You have a perfect example of what "Some Types" of people who "couldn't care less" when you were driving through Mansura (Your black buddy parked right in the middle of the road just daring you to hit her car!)

    That school building used to be a high school. I know someone who graduated from there. They are supposed to renovate that building into a new school called École Saint-Landry.

    So many questions! I stayed in Mamou - for a short stay over at Savoy Medical. Waaay back in 1988 Do the apartments on Cherry Street - still exist? They had wooden staircases- I think- What was the name of the boudin shop ...kinda outside of town - possible towards Ville Platte. Maybe there was more than one. It so flat , no wonder my sister rode her bike all the time - while I was recovering! Thank you for making this video. I have a yearning to come back to Cajun country and live in Mamou. I live in NC but am originally from Suburban Maryland. Love Cajun music and food

    Hey Guys! Thank you for posting this video. I grew up in VP. I left in 1988 to attend LSU. I left LA for good in 1994 for a career in the Air Force. I visited VP about 1 1/2 years ago and can attest to all that you've demonstrated. It's a sad thing to see such decay and despair in the town where I grew up. Regarding the store that sold single cigarettes, I believe it was called Big Nose because of the guy I assume ran the place. He was a classmate of mine at Sacred Heart. We called him Big Nose because he was very muscular and played Nose Guard for the Trojans. His father owned the store before and it was called Dizzy Dean's after his nickname. I'd be happy to correspond separately if you are interested in more history, at least from my somewhat dimmed memory.

    • @louisianatravels
      @louisianatravels 3 месяца назад

      A few blocks from the elementary school. In fact I used to live about 1-2 streets in front of "the woods" and would frequently hear gunshots from my front porch at night. At least once it was fully automatic gunfire.

    I was born there in 1950 and left in 1969, I have fond memories of the place, people and culture of a once great small town. Dups lounge, Evangeline Club and plenty to do at that time. Sad to see what it has become where the people moved to the out skirts and it's now a welfare area with only lawyers & doctors....

    I grew up right outside Mamou in Vidrine and haven’t spent much time in 20 years now, but that took me back. My dad was older and grew up there and one of my brothers and sisters had a sausage kitchen there. So sad to see many of the houses in that state now. My thing was the video stores Mrs Rita’s family video, and neighbors and their family who originally owned Robbie’s and town and country.
