Fantastic review 👏
El coche clásico que yo anhelo tener ese Mercedes🚘💪🇩🇪
Not powerful really!
why back seats dont have head rests?
My dream W116 would be one with an OM 606 big turbo swap and all the bells and whistles out of the 450 6.9.
i love my 87 300d
Está bien pendejo este güero, debió enbancar con barrotes o block la camioneta,en peligro le caiga encima, no hagan eso..está a punto de salir herido,
Watching this after your w123 videos. How do they compare? Cost of ownership ?
I tried to analyse over and over why I love so much the W123. I love fast cars, I hate Diesel, the 240d that I inherited from my grand father was a car I hated when I was a kid. But today, almost 35 years later I am obsessed by my W123. Despite the obvious, the build quality, I would say that the general balance of the car is almost perfect. The driving position, the choice of materials, the way everything is falling into place, the ride quality despite the noise, and the harmony of the body lines no matter from what angle you are looking at it. The W123 is a really special car, that works as an extension of yourself, to communicate with the road. Today's car don't communicate anymore. Adopt a W123
I saved all this money and can’t find a manual 240d not one it’s horrible
Update I just bought one and man I love it but it won’t go over 85 on the highway and it takes a couple business days to get up a hill or merge a highway 😂
When I found a 79 240D for 2k, I thought about it overnight and bought it in the morning. I've owned quite a few cars over my lifetime. My 250D ranks up there with the best of them. It's odd that the RUclipsr of this video has such a different experience with his 240D than I had. I had just the opposite experience in city driving and highway driving. In the city my car was okay. Excellent as an easy and comfortable drive. On the highway, once it got up to highway speeds. It just seemed to beg for more. It even felt at times the gas peddle would go down a bit on It's own. I loved this car and to this day I hate that I sold it. Later as I was in the process of purchasing a C230 Sport car. I asked the salesman if I would get the same experience driving the C230 as I had with my 240D. The salesman leaned back in his seat and said, "absolutely no"! He said that I'd never find a car that size with such a great ride ever again.
I am the 3rd care giver of a 1978 300SD car number 254. Motor number is 154. Have had the car for over 20 years. It get 25 mpg town 30 open road. It is a low milage car 733,000 miles. It is resting because the tranny messed up. Also have a 83 300D with 676,000 miles. It is my farm beater. Also have a 79 240D for many years. Few years back found a 70 220D I looked at new a low miles. The gal that had it did not check the oil. She ran it low killed the rid bearings. Plus also have a 1980 L1116 Benz truck. Used for hauling hay around my farm.
This cars are build to cruise , they go forever
Very helpful! Thanks.
“Just how small this car is” It is only a few inches shorter in length than a Ford Crown Victoria, also has the same roofline, and that is a full-size sedan… soooo
I am watching your w123 videos since I just got a 200D and you gotta get back to making those! Super informative :D
do you wanna sell it if you still have it?
Dude make more vids!!! I've had the notification bell on for like 3 years waiting
Aw really? 🥺 Thanks so much! That means a lot. Yeah my life got pretty weird during COVID and I've just now returned to a space of stability haha. There will be many more to come :)
@@takeiteasy_tv I hope so man. Still have the 300SD?
Good to see you back
Good to be back <3 thanks for the support!
The infamous W123 ??
Closing with the ticking clock was a really great touch.
Haha thanks for noticing :)
Underpowered with a 53Kw 137Nm naturally aspirated diesel. But they could easily do 1m km + if serviced properly
I ended up replacing the timing chain and helicoiling a spark plug, but the engine was just too worn out. I bought a 1973 in China Blue that's my current project!
Built to endure. NOT like today’s disposable vehicles with intentionally built-in obsolescence marketed to us as environmentally friendly. The large steering wheel like that on my W201 is deliberate to ensure steering control should the power steering fail. 👍🏻🏴🇺🇸 It’s major flaw is hidden rust.
Very helpful, thank you. So what MPG now?
Getting right about 32! Mixed highway and city. It just sips diesel :)
My 1980 240d manual runs good. 85 mph. Cranks even without glow plugs. But will NOT take off on a steep driveway. No clutch slip. Just won't take off. No power. New fuel tank. Filters. Or is it supposed to be this way?
Hmmm that's odd. Yeah, maybe just needs an even lower first gear. In general, it's a car that despises hills haha.
The rear cup holder pulls out to reveal the first aid kit behind it.
There’s a silver button just under the hazard lights button that opens the console and revels the CD changer. Most E55 owners don’t know about it.
Honestly I sold it after a year... it kept needing repair and has been the only car to leave me stranded (fuel pump relay). I'd like to make a video about it someday haha.
I’m sorry what did you say for the Main Vacuum pump why do you need to rotate the engine to install back on ?
It's hard to describe, but basically the vacuum pump is "gear" driven so you have to align the engine gear with the pump gear. You should be able to figure it out when you're looking at it.
My 1980 240d manual runs great. Cranks in cold easily even without glow plugs activated. Leaks oil from a lot of gaskets. Must fix that. But....in a steep driveways or steep roads it will NOT start off. No clutch slippage. Just won't. But, on highway it will run at least 85 mph. Surely Mercedes didn't design a car with this limitation? I see super steep Alpine roads and driveways, parking lots etc... and as a taxi....how could this work in a steep mountain city? So...what's the deal? Any tips? Is this normal for a 240d manual? Thanks
Would you be interested in checking out my 240 DL? My friend is offering me one sitting since Pandemic. It was running well before that. We cannot get it to turn over.
Sure! As long as you're local to ABQ anyway. Shoot me a DM on Instagram :)
@@takeiteasy_tv awe.. PNW PDX ;)
That car is exactly like mine (U.S. Spec, 1979 240D, 4 speed manual, White with Bamboo interior). Mine has the rare factory rear seat headrests. My only piece of advice is to check the suspension bushings and rubber bits. After 40 years, they were gone on my car (as expected though).
Oh nice! Excellent choice haha. Good tip though. Mine seems to sag a bit in the rear, a problem I have yet to tackle.
@@takeiteasy_tv Thanks! The sag could be aging springs although I normally associate that with the W126 series.
Drove it 600 miles with head gasket blown pretty much I’m hoping the head is not cracked and messed up valve seals
Head gasket and rings is the only way to actually get it back to new compression feeling. But I have done a lot already but still my head gasket is causing flooding problems on all passages pretty much
Ducking amazing video. Thank you for this. You just gave me a list of things to. Oh wait... Did I just get homework from the internet... shit.............
No offense but the seats are mbttech and not leather.
Hmmm yeah, I knew that but guess I misspoke, thanks! :)
I love these W116 so much, but prefer a petrol version say a 280SE
they dont build them like they used to
Thank you for the great video. I want to purchase a W123 240D with a manual transmission. How is parts availability?
Parts are very easy to come by! Assuming you're in the US, I recommend AutohausAZ, Rockauto, and MercedesSource. Mercedes still fabricates many parts for their classic cars, which I really appreciate.
Consider buying the nicest and newest 240D you can find. I’m not sure about the W123, but it’s possible they switched steel suppliers in 1980. The Belgian steel tended to be prone to rust. True or folk legend… not sure. Also the newer cars had an external clutch slave. That can turn a day job into a five minute job.
I have '76 240D that I inherited from family. I will admit my knowledge of mechanics is amateur, but I'd love to be able to begin to work on the vehicle myself. OP or anyone else have a path of suggestion towards learning mechanics and learning to work on my 240D? I know there are countless amounts of resources out there, but its information overload out there too, and so it's good to have mentorship every once and awhile. Cheers everyone!
Nice! Congrats :) I got my start as a mechanic just reading forums and figuring it out as I go. Google is an amazing tool! Of course, start easy and don't do anything too complicated or dangerous (i.e. brakes). You might even take it to a local Mercedes shop and have them do a full inspection. This will give you a laundry list of fixes and they might offer you some advice too.
A couple of tips: *Sleeve the radiator. It can save many hundreds of $$, and the sleeve cost pennies. *Fabricate a drip shield that mounts over the drivers side engine mount. The lift (primer) pumps leak just a very tiny amount of diesel . That diesel drips onto the rubber engine mount. I’ve seen the mount deteriorate and have to be replaced in a matter of weeks. I have no idea what happens to the factory drip shield, but never seen a used model with the shield still in the car. Maybe I should begin to fabricate and sell drip shields, and soft polyurethane left side engine mounts.
3D print?
I have watched this video probably 5 times. It was a big help in adjusting the valves on my '82 240D today! Took most of the day, but I like to go slow and double/triple check things. Two of them were extremely tight and way out of adjustment. I took the glow plugs out and used the power steering pulley to turn the engine, it worked great and I got to check the condition of the flow plugs. Next, I will install new nozzles. It drove better and seemed to have more power after the valve adjustment. Thanks for the video!
Fantastic, great to hear :) Happy driving!
I watched it but I don't get it. I think I want to watch someone do it in person first.
My 1st car was a '79 240D. I had to double clutch into 2nd lol
How has reliability been for you so far? Im eyeing one with 220k km and the mileage is making me a bit hesitant
I've always favored the W126, but I had a 1980 300SD years ago. I have to say that I think the ride quality of the W116 was better than the W126. Both were great cars. I love them both.
Thanks for such a great video. I'm 46 years old, and I've been driving 80s Mercedes for 27 years. I've always favored the 300SD W126, but I've owned three 240Ds as well. One of the best cars I've ever owned in my life was a 1983 240D manual. My ex-wife totaled the car in bad weather years ago, but the car did its job; the car gave its life to save hers. I'm grateful for that. I have a 1980 240D manual and a 1981 240D automatic. As well as a couple of 300SDs. There will never be another car built, ever, like the 1980s Mercedes diesels. As you alluded to, the simplicity in design is one of the reasons that these 40+-year old cars are still going. Thanks again for the video. Really enjoyed it.

Hard to get a good one for a reasonable price…
This shit looked so hard in other videos 😂you nailed it fool
Can you change the color for the ambient lighting?
They do last for ever the diesels but as a daily the 230 is the most practical choice keeps up with modern traffic"mostly" and is frugal and pretty. I should know I have 3 a 200 petrol a 230 auto and a 300d. All great fun. enjoy yours.
