I'm feeling petty this morning so I will make a complaint that few will agree with. That person in the audience who absolutely has to be the first one to clap while the final note is still bouncing off the walls and being absorbed by ears. With a piece like, or a better example, the end of Schubert's 'Unfinished', if I were a professional musician, having just completed such a piece, the highest paean I could be given is a second or two even of complete SILENCE. There is an emotional moment at the end of pieces such as this that is completely shattered by a bunch of monkeys reflexively banging their hands together because they are supposed to. Their is a time when SILENCE is the greatest respect one can pay. Just sayin'...
