Samuel Hoskins, b. 2000, is a Florence Academy of Art Alumni fascinated by imagery as the most direct form of communication between our dreams, visions, hallucinations, and our monkey bodies. This channel acts as a visual journal (sounds better than a diary) of my explorations in painting as a way of trying to condense and solidify the myriad of ideas and imagery that escapes English.
Making a Color Study for a New Oil Painting
In this oil painting timelapse/vlog, I explore the merging of consciousness and the subconscious through an underwater scene where light and shadow blend. Inspired by thinkers like Terence McKenna and Carl Jung, the painting reflects the dissolution of duality, capturing a moment where the boundaries between the known and unknown fade away.

How I Prepare a Palette for Oil Painting
Просмотров 455Месяц назад
This is how I restore my wood palette back to its original condition. As much as I love the patina (the glassy-like surface that forms over time from rubbing walnut to cleaning the remaining paint off the palette over time), sometimes it is time to start fresh. I use gel paint thinner and walnut oil to remove the paint and then prepare the wood for another few years of painting. I got this pale...

In this video, I speculate on the future of art and technology, inspired by Terence McKenna's visionary ideas. I break down the evolution of art into five stages, from animating traditional oil paintings to creating fully immersive, interactive worlds through AI and brain-computer interfaces (BCI). We’ll look at 2D and 3D digital environments, VR, and ideas about the potential for artists to bu...

Very nice, I'm happy I found your channel. Hello from Holland
What is the safest way to sand some of the painting down if I'm using genuine vermillion and lead white? should I just do it outside and wear gloves and a respirator? love the content!
Yes, i would definitely wear a mask and make sure the dust doesn't get anywhere. I would just be very careful to try to avoid the dust spreading.
I liked this format and liked seeing where you are painting in Italy. Very interesting.
Glad to have caught this! Please do the LIVEs more! (Just please not on SUNdays at 10am PST when I do mine) I’d like to catch you live… 👍🏽 This is a lovely piece! 😍 What is this piece about (two-headed being)…
will do! thank you!
In the thumbnail the timer thing cuts of the T making it say making pain
Wonderful channel. Thank you for making such clear demonstrations for people.
Does Black Oil darken? I bought some from a maker and noticed a darkening effect , but I also mixed in a Copal varnish they make as well. This was 8 months after noticing my painting in the dark. Just nervous it will darken. I like to get my whites and colors as pure looking as possible, but I have to say I love the lead mediums and lead white. But not sure your experience noticing any darkening or if you know?
Oh wait, the medium I have is similar to Black oil, lead, manganese, and linseed oil. Maybe the manganese darkened?
where did you find that metal panel?
Hi Samuel, this was super helpful. Thank you. Could you explain what you do with your loose linen when you get home? Do you glue them flat to a panel or stretch them on stretcher bars? Or are they just for research and you don't prepare them for framing?
You are so amazing. I adore your style and your process. Though I don’t really understand philosophy, it’s interesting to hear. 🩷
That was cool, thanks.
paint and varnish stripper - this gel?

Why show it, if you ain't going to show the finished product

@@samuel.s.hoskins Not good enough, damn it, not good enough!
@@chrisshabatowski4349I agree, not good enough gosh darn it. I’ve got places to go, people to see, money to make. 😂
Great voice
good tips. thanks
Thank you so much for the video! Very valuable information. I am a beginner. I subscribed to your channel.
I am glad it was helpful! Thank you!
Interesting to listen and a nice portrait of David! :)
Thank you!
That was really interesting.
So you use black oil to make paint, or in mediums or both? I saw a series of photos of a guy using black oil as a glaze medium on a painting in the maxfield parrish style. Pretty impressive. Next week I’m going to try the glazing with rublev’s black oil.
I love your videos! do have a reading list of the books you talk of. I would love to read futher about these techniques
Practical and economical method for grinding the glass surface on which to grind the colors. Práctico y económico método para esmerilar la superficie de vidrio en la que moler los colores. How long does the paint you make with linseed oil last without drying out inside the tube? ¿La pintura hecha por tí con aceite de linaza cuánto dura sin secarse dentro del tubo ? I apologize for not speaking English. I used Google Translate. Thank you for your work. Pido disculpas por no hablar inglés. He usado el traductor de GOOGLE. Gracias por tu trabajo.
Hi Samuel, a wonderful and informative video, thank you. Did you have any issues getting your art supplies through the TSA check points? I've heard accounts of art supplies; paints, mediums, brushes, etc., not allowed to board, and forced to be left behind for both international and domestic flights.
I pack everything except for the loose linen in my checked luggage and have not had any problems.
I have traveled both domestic and to several countries abroad (Rome, Portugal, Greece) with 40ml and smaller sized paint tubes, long handle brushes (many sizes and shapes), a small holbein palette knife, a tiny bit of oil and have never had anyone confiscate my materials. I print out a sheet that you can google for TSA that has info about vegetable-based artist colors (never call them paints) and their flashpoints. I take them as carry on (not checked in). I am travelling for the first time with my plein air gear to Paris and am more concerned about the weight limits on Air France which is 26.4 lbs total (suitcase and personal item) for economy seats. I've heard they're strict flying out of Paris.
Glad I met you at the Bellevue Art Fair today. 😊 I’ve worked w/ consciousness in various ways for years & knew I needed to connect after seeing your YT channel. I’ve known Ken Wilbur since I lived in Boulder in the early 2000’s and am now finishing my PhD at CIIS, which was founded by Haridas Chaudhry, a student of Sri Arubindo & the Mother, the first scholars of Integral Yoga. I studied w/ Alan Leslie Combs @ CIIS, a leading consciousness scholar. My thesis is in compassionate technology since I’ve worked w/ AGI in the past & am working to bring technology back to a humanistic basis. Glad to cross paths, definitely was led to connect.
It was great to meet you as well!
I had the box to transport the fresh pictures built by a carpenter.
Great project!
Fabulous video chocked full of tips!
One last thing, the horse dod doo... did you just get it in the field or did you treat it a certain way? I got half a 30 gallon bucket, do I fill it half full like you? what process? thank you for responding also..
did you use vinegar or actual acetic acid, I bought acetic acid.. also, howmuch did you treat the lead with acetone?
I used acetic acid and diluted it a bit with water. I have heard that vinegar works fine as well. For the acetone, I didn't measure. I just applied some to the rough end of a sponge and scrubbed it a bit and that seemed to work fine.
I do and use a cooked oil too but never tried with litharge, instead i use calcium sulfate and bone ash, but before mixed the minerals with the oil i crush them using a mortar and a pestle, the minerals need to be very fine almost like smoke, otherwise the resulting oil its not so satisfactory. You should try to get a mortar and a pestle to crush your pigments, there are a very cheap ones made of hard plastic, that can do the job.
I love it! Thanks for documenting your process! If I were you, I would invest in a much better mask, a true respirator. They’re only $15 for the p100 3m ones.
what kind of acid did you use?
acetic
@@samuel.s.hoskins ok well, I have run into a problem, I used Apple cider vinegar made from mother, meaning strong and Im gettign a gray flaking.. not sure if its because of the acetate I whiped it with or what but the horse poo is fresh and I ordered some pure strength 99.9% acetic acid and will begin again this weekend.. any suggestions would be nice...
Hello I watched the video of making black oil and I would appreciate it if you could tell me what the exact ratio of linseed oil and litharge. ☺ ️
Hi. I’m leaving a comment because I have a question. I’d like to know the ratio between linseed oil and litharge.
did you put the horse manure on the lead itself? inside the jars?
The manure is in the tubs and the jars are set partially in it so the lead itself isn't touching it.
I like to use vinegar to dissolve the lead white with no grinding. Then rinse with water till vinegar smell is gone. Then make put in a enamel pot and use a hot plate on low to dry the cake. Good video, good luck and happy painting.
That is very helpful! I wanted to try making Dutch stack lead white which is when the particles are all different sizes instead of all homogenous like when you dissolve in acetic acid or vinegar. I'll have to try that next time to compare!
I also stir once a day to help dissolve into finer particles.
Clever, I recently stumbled upon a good loose linen supplier and was wondering how to transport them safely. For panels I just use a simple wood frame with screws on the sides that act like a slider cutout.
That is a good idea!
Just want to say thank you for sharing your knowledge. I find these old alchemical recipes incredibly interesting. I've got a question regarding what you said, that this oil is as dark as its going to get and I've heard the same said about stand oil. So I was wondering if you've experienced making your own paint using stand oil instead of the regular options. I haven't been able to find much info about it online, but if oil is oil then I'd assume it would work just fine...right?
Thank you for watching! Stand oil is a thickened form of linseed oil. I usually add a bit in addition to the regular linseed oil when I am making lead white or ivory black. It helps the paint not sink in so much and helps it retain the brushstrokes more. I think if you only used stand oil it would be tough to work with and it would have a consistency similar to honey. I hope that helps!
So interesting! I'm excited that you're so far along in both your artistic development as well as your philosophical understanding. I am also a painter and a Christian and I struggled for so many years with doubts about how my artistic expression fit in with my idea that we are here to make a positive contribution to our neighbors (world). Finally after many years (and time away from focused art while raising our children), I was able to accept that God gave me the desire to create and to try and reflect back some of (His) glory which I see around me in the created world. My hope is that some of the paintings I make will be worthy of outliving me and adding beauty to the world. Your thoughts have given me a lot to think about and I admire your willingness to just put it out there. I look forward to watching many more of your videos.
Thank you! That is great to hear. It sounds like we have similar goals!
...I used yeast and sugar as my CO2 source....didnt want to get my hands dirty lol
Did you talk about brushes? Since you didn't buy the side tray, were you planning to hold the brushes in your hand? I know some people do that but curious if that's your plan or you have something else in mind. I have the same setup and I have one side tray. I don't think it's quite enough for all my brushes though. It's hard to dig through to find the brush I need without some falling off.
I usually use 4-6 brushes during a painting session and I prefer to hold them so I can switch between them fast. I have tried setting them down but I find them all back in my hand after a couple of minutes!
Canabua Wax it is more solid that usual bees wax......needs a highter temperature to melt ☝️ ...So, your colors painted on cavens will be more solid and less subject to becone soft or even to begign bleeding 😏
That is great to know! Thank you!
Yes, thank you for the tip. :)
It seems like you are relly in the Natural Pigments products 👏👏😊
Yes, I love their products!
Ai isn't the problem. It's the lack of human experience, emotional depth, the regression of humanity itself that's the problem. As long as humans remain emotional beings ai could never replace them. Now, it need be said, a great many "creators" will need to find a new means of income, but true artists will last forever. This whom understand beauty, divinity in any form, rhetoric, allegory will remain and thrive throughout time. Those splashing color around calling it art then selling prints of that, those ppl will need to advance of disappear.
Very True!
Are you talking to yourself here m8?
this is so lovely

Very informative content! But is the two weeks waiting for the retouch varnish or the finished deal? sorry if I have misunderstood it
At least two weeks for the retouch. The longer the better but the main goal it to have the painting dry enough so that the varnish doesnt bond into the painting but rather sits on top of it acting as protection. If I have to show a painting, often times I will use retouch varnish. It does the job and still allows some breathing room for the painting to continue to thoroughly dry.
