Restoring a 100-Year-Old Morakniv Hunting Knife
The project for today is an extremely old Jaktkniv, or hunting knife in English, which was created by Erik Frost sometime between 1910 and 1920.
At the time, this was the top model from the Mora factory. I have never seen a knife in such perfect condition. This knife, like all the others, required some effort to revive.
I was unable to do some things, such as delamination of the laminated steel. I had the option of grinding the blade back, but since it's a part of the knife's history, I decided to keep it.
Every task was done by hand using standard tools. Anyone can do it.
Follow the campaign to restore each and every vintage Mora knife, one at a time.

He speaks the truth on this, I don't always agree with his approach but he is definitely worth learning from.
Hello Morakniv man!How do you remove the sticki tape when you change the sandpaper?I try paint thiner-not doing much at all...Please answer! My bords are man made matirial like micarta.
If that blade is a pukko, it is indeed a specalized knife. In the way it is a tool and not a weapon. It has a specalized blade that performs many functions. I agree halfway stop talking out your ass.
Amazing job!
Awe yes the Ego Cody nailed it
1095 steel bk14 Escobar usually gets me where I need to go..
I fucking love Cody. Nobody doubts the man because he lives it. It's so refreshing to hear an expert who hasn't been bought and branded .
What?
I've used a Mora and a Case Stockman for years.
Didn't Cody lundin use a mora knife?. I'm just wondering and yes he's totally right about the skill of the user just like me I shop at Walmart and my survival knife a choice currently is a Ozark trail reaper ripoff knife I got the most recent one that has the micarta handle scales and the plastic sheath 0 which I come to find to be kind of an annoying she's because it rides way too high on the hip so I kind of prefer the original Ozark trail reaper rip off knife with the cherry wood handle scales I come to find the knife is the perfect size for a lot of bush crafting tasks as well as batoning medium firewood and it all comes down to the grind that Ozark trail put on the knife it stays sharp for a really long time and it's easy to sharpen up and it actually can get sharp enough to shave with quite easily because of the grind Ozark trail put on it I had to say it was the best $20 I've ever spent on a knife versus the buck reaper which cost me about $80 and yes the metal is really good steel but they chose to put a hollow grind on it which is terribly hard to keep Sharp and it gets dull pretty quick compared to the Ozark trail Ozark trail is actually way better. So any bushcrafters out there that are looking for a nice cheap survival knife that can stand up to many bushcrafting tasks go check out Walmart's Ozark trail reaper ripoff knife and buy it it's a good knife for 20 bucks not to mention if you ever needed a knife big enough to defend yourself with against an animal out in the bush this also gives you plenty of length to defend yourself with
I’ve never been in a situation where I thought to myself, if only I had spent another 350 dollars on another knife, I could have survived😂
Couldn't agree more. My grandma used to take her kitchen knife everywhere she needed. Gardening, camping, home improvements. At the end of the day its a sharpened piece of steel with a handle.
I am on board with this guy....i make knives all the time simple hidden tang that cost little. Due to cost of living american knife makers have to over charge just to live. ...i can make one for as little as 200 dollars by hand. Most of the cost is labor.
What will a $400 knife do that an esee wont?
lol quit hating on my benchmade
The only question i ask is how often do you think you will be using it? High use? Premium steel. Low use? Low tier budget blades/fastback 🤷🏻♂️
Found all the poor lesbians
The best knife I own is a $150 custom made tracker from DuffyKnives. He's the best bladesmith around, and extremely affordable. My knife will be passed down for generations.
I love carbon fixed blades that are simple so if u lose it which will happen if u are out there enough that's for sure. Of course there's nothing like receiving a very expensive bush craft knife !! 🔪 like a nice hand made blade just beautiful But a s cheap mora will do the trick
Is that a mora ?
Metallurgy has changed so much since that mindset had any credence.
Cody’s legit
Where ya been Bro?
Bro this guy is a staple in my childhood I love watching his videos with my dad
I use simple over the counter Buck knives. I've been using them since I was 10. I'm 56 years old now.
Love your book. Totally agree on knives . $20 Mora will do in 90% or more in just about any situation.
Glad to see you are still thriving Cody, if it wasn’t for you and Dave on dual survival I don’t think I’d be into bushcraft and the outdoors as much as I am today. Thank you.
I thought this was cody
Agreed
Wise words from a survivalist
This guy is no bullshit. Wealth of knowledge.
I love my mora I even made a cool custom sheath for it
To be honest with you I like to carry a fixed blade with a thick spine rounded edge versus a point but while I'm at work it's more practical for me to carry my Benchmade folder the only reason why I recommend them and I know they're expensive because if it breaks chips whatever they have a lifetime warranty and they are American made so something does happen to it you can send it back to the company and they will either replace it or fix the problem when you get your knife back very nice knives I've also taken cheaper knives and rounded the point down with a grinder 😂😂😂 into a sharp rounded blade I know it sounds stupid but I find it easier to cut through thicker stuff by getting rid of the point
lol I do like his comment but lets think for a minute ..... I totally agree so my question is 2000 years ago they did the same thing we are doing today and they used a sharp rock lol let that sink in for a minute
It's the barefoot Pocahontas. The survival expert is going to lose this feet
Well , actually the basic lineage design behind Mora knives are several hundred years old , so that a solid proven design and a big plus is they are very affordable.💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼
They used to make castles with chisels and hand tools common to their time. Hand a warrior and rock and it's application is limitless.
400$ knife is stupid Split grey rock knife $00.00
If my life depends on the knife, i want full tang in a good tough steel, it doesn't have to be magnacut, but i do want to have faith in a reputable manufacturer who knows how to heat treat the steel they use. Nothing against mora, but i prefer the higher end of their products. I'd say $75 to 200 seems to be a good price range.
I use the Becker ka bars or esee if I don’t wanna change the handle or sheath good starting point..
@samward9641 both are solid knives, but the bushcraft people usually like scandi ground knives. Tops, brothers of bushcraft, some joker knives, and plenty of others are available as scandi under the $200 price range.
An old teacher told me once here in Sweden if you were ever to unalive someone with a knife and it's not a mora you will not only be imprisoned for murder but also treason
Different knives have different grinds, edges, steels, handle materials etc... Theyre just not all built the same. For survival i would want a convex grind in something like cpm 3v or magnacut. Good luck finding that cheap. Just binge watch a little "Dutch bushcraft knives" and do your own research. This guy is no knife expert and does not test knives to failure. This statement is far to broad and only talks about price but there's nothing tangible to his comments. He really doesn't state anything about what you should be looking for in a knife. It's just for content. He knows survival but i dont like this take. Knives is personal choice in most cases but there is a lot to consider once you learn about them.
One needs decent quality steel, know how to sharpen and maintain properly, and know how to use the knife as a tool. The rest is up to your personal choice.
" Knowing how to sharpen " Key phrase ^ ^ right there. That's why many knives are bought these days. People don't know how to use a whetstone like has been used since we began making knives from steel. There's a good many people that should be buying and using these modern replaceable blade knives. They're pretty much tailor made for people that can't sharpen a regular knife and the shame is taken away
So true. I got kicked out of a bushcraft group when the admin kept insisting you need ateast 300$ knife or you're not a true bushcrafter - and I said I can do whatever he does with a Mora
Well said i had a similar experience i said I don’t need no 300$ blade because it doesn’t make a difference a 20$ mora does the same task and i dont have to worry if i loose it or if it has some super steel simple carbon mora for me
How did that work when man survived with flint knives ?
@ exactly 👍
@@StephenStocks-e1e obviously the price of flint was much higher back then ;)
Wow. Just subscribed
I’ll knock 400 dollar knives almost all day! It started with the Busse knives in the late 1990s/early 2000s where a 400 dollar knife was cheap in their catalogue and it has only gotten worse. The knives are tough, but a lot of manufacturers have caught up with them. Emerson is still using the same stuff they have used since the 80s and charging like their stuff is cutting edge when they haven’t had a meaningful production quality increase since the early 2000s. I fell into the trap of buying two 400+ dollar knives that were basically pocket fixed blades that weren’t all that amazing. For most people, they would be in the tacticool category. All it did for me was make me hate when they try to sell you something where the labor is way too much of the charge. Hype is ridiculous in the knife world sometimes. Currently, I carry a $61 Kizer Militaw Fixed in Nitro-V. It is one of the cheapest knives I own, but I’ll be darned if it hasn’t held an absolutely beautiful edge, resisted some hard work that would usually chip an edge, and been super easy to get right back to shaving sharp with about 3-5 minutes of work on cheap stones.
Gear does not make the man
He is 100% correct. I am a knife collector, and I grew up in the bush. Premium steels are nice, but not necessary.
Facts!
I love watching knife reviewers, but the thing is they get paid,or get knives given to them. Some probably get paid by companies also. Sometimes I get caught up in wanting more, then I have to ground myself. I'm grateful for all the knives I have and honestly my budget knives get the most use. Very grateful to have gotten a gerber prodigy before fine edge was discontinued. After watching these videos,I'm honestly going to grab another mora! I have the the mora basic already!
Knives with scandi grind are great.
For some users and uses
Love the handmaid sheath
Thanks.
@Oldmora handmade lol sorry haha
Ive done a lot wirh a $20 Mora..... I'm also not a fan of footwear.
