Добавлен 16 апр 2014
Come and join me N3PEM as I take my voyage through Amateur Radio and Radio as a hobby!
POTA Activation with Eric KD2HWD!
A August POTA activation I did with Eric KD2HWD at LBJ Memorial Grove in Washington DC. I tried, and failed, to get the ISS this time but hopefully we will get it again in the future.
Mostly using Eric's equipment in the video and it all worked pretty well!
If you wish to suppourt the channel you can in the links below. Thanks for watching, 73!

POTA Activation at the National Cherry Blossom Festival
A few times I’ve had police/park rangers/security, ask me what I was doing, it has never been an issue. Because you were operating from a national monument in Washington, DC I would guess that they’re hyper-cautious. I carry my license with me, but I’ve never had to show it to anyone. One time I had a police officer come up to me and ask “ham radio?”, I said yep, he said OK and walked away.
Wtf
Fun is not allowed sir. Licensed 20+ years that just bs, can I check your bag- No.
Hi Patraic! Thank’s for the QSO and the Video (I missed the livestream) 73 Juergen/George AH6UN/OE4JHW - POTA on!
Now I know how I sound on the other end HI! Thanks for the contact 73 and good DX - POTA on! Juergen (George) AH6UN / OE4JHW
you look like the ukraninan president.
100% a busy body reported you. In the 21st century, it is impossible to enjoy a hobby.
Clueless cops. It’s not illegal.
Somebody called, I had them show up at a hunting ground- park. The cop said someone called, could have been a passing car? Anyway the cop checked out my antenna, car, HF radio showed him my log, he said he was satisfied and left! Now I keep a laminated copy of the pota site where it explains the activity along with the free ARRL brochure for all those who inquire
“I’m not sure if it’s ok” Then GO AWAY! Holy balls.
The caption even be making contact unless what he sees XM think something illegal is going on. This guy didn’t even know if what you were doing was allowed so he should’ve kept his crap shut or maybe asked his supervisor first. So tired of government overreach
Great video, I am working towards my amateur license in Canada. The G90 is on my short list of my first HF transceiver. I agree with you that getting a good antenna with any setup, especially POTA is the best way to make the most contacts. In my experience buying gear for various hobbies is to buy the best you can afford. If you outgrown the gear, you can upgrade. At the same time, I am believer in the buy once, cry once mantra.
Hello from FN12 Watkins Glen, New York
I had a park ranger stop and watch me trying to get a arborist bag up in a tree. He finally walked over to me and asked if he could give a shot and nailed the tree limb on the first try. He told me he did POTA too. I asked if he wanted to make some contacts and told me his boss reviewed his log occasionally and it would not go well if he was activating on State time 😂😂😂 Hilarious.
In Australia you only are required to show your accreditation to ACMA (the radio overlords lol), no one else..
Way to go and be patient with the officer. I usual say I am part of a stat park sponsored program. The parks have to agree to be part of POTA so that statement is true. I rarely have an issue but always good to stay cool as you did and do your best to educate them
No warranty, no search. That’s only if you respect the constitution 🙄
In most places you need to show zem you papers. Wow, fascist much. Please look it up before you go cray.
This is the reason I don't typically operate from traditional public parks like the neighborhood park. I don't mind satisfying John or Jane Public's curiosity, but many people and antennas generally don't mix; and there's a contrast between what I'm doing and what other park users are doing -- which "raises concerns." "Concerns" attract police, and *their* curiosity is....not wanted or welcomed. In New York State, Parks can be run by local government, county government -- these typically don't feature on the POTA page. We also have State Parks (run by State Parks and Recreation), State Forests (run by the Department of Environmental Conservation), State Wildlife Management Areas (also run by DEC), and National Wildlife Refuges (run by the Federal government). A full fifth of the State (by land mass) is devoted to the Adirondack region, half of which is protected in the State Constitution as "forever wild." So...plenty of opportunities to operate that are well away from people, Karens, and police. So if I have a choice in the matter, I'll almost always activate from places that tend to not have people in them -- primarily State Forests -- because there doesn't exist that contrast between what other park users are doing, and what I'm doing. I'll typically hike in a little ways and start looking for places a bit off the trail to set up and operate. I'm not right on the trail -- so I'm not impeding anything -- and it would be enough of a hassle to get to me that I rarely see anyone -- much less the local police that have nothing better to do than question me about what I'm doing or citing fictitious "permit" concerns. Primitive camping is allowed by State Forests, so this is actually the best way to be left alone to play radio. ...because, as we should all know by now: there's no situation so bad, the cops can't make it worse.
I don’t know what you are doing and I’ll have to ask if it’s ok. Boy oh boy
This is why people love the police. Ummm, can I look the bag ummm, I not sure of this is ok. Got to be careful when they are in fishing mode. If you’d be committing a real crime he’d been busy with other traffic at the donut store.
I had a park ranger come up to me , and he was a ham and was just wondering, what kind of radio and antenna I was using
That would be a good encounter but I’d be very tempted to ask him what radio he was using to see if his claim was legit or if he was just making excuses check out my stuff
Where were you activating from? I see a big thing behind you. Just curious.
Wow! Well done keeping calm and educating the police officer. You never know, someone may have complained of a suspicious person, because they didn’t know or ask you what’s going on. That’s happened to me before. I always get into the ‘Emergency Preparedness’ line when people ask.

That cop had no business even making contact let alone violating his 4th amendment right.
I disagree on multiple levels. I'd much rather the officer do exactly as he did instead of lurking around in the background "watching".
He didn’t violate his 4 amendment. He asked and got consent
😮 I don’t even carry my FCC license. 🪪
I just happend to have it from traveling recently
i keep a copy in my wallet. its on the bottom of your permission slip.
"Do you have a permit? I have my FCC license." LOL... nice
Cops just being cops lol
73 ❤🎉
Hi
what frequency were you on?
Awesome video! Keep up the good work
Awesome
That was a fun day
how are you?
Dang, I want a ham radio, but, with thee money I have, I’ll have to decide if I want the Badger 2040 or the license and the actual radio. 😢
Great video but there was one problem you should had Krispy Kreme donuts instead of Dunkin's.😊
We don't really have it around here lol
Oh if only you can get an antenna on top of that!
a hole cops. trying to flex
I get them from time to time, and never an issue if you are respectful like you were...This is why I kind of stay away from the public areas as much as possible, if possible...I don't get those that fly flags, advertise they are doing POTA or anything to attract attention, mind boggling.
It's just a different way of doing it. Not really mind boggling at all. Most people are barely aware of the existence of Ham radio. If we want the hobby to continue and thrive, that needs to change. It's about being an ambassador. Will you get some unwanted attention? Possibly. It goes with the territory.
Greetings from Georgia! Ryan KJ4DRN 73
That was a very fun day. Thanks again .
Perfect, thanks for posting 73 s from Germany, Jürgen DM1JF
Pota is so much FUN! de W2CSI
Favorite is ic-705
I just got an MC-750 portable HF antenna. I haven't done POTA with it yet but I set it up in my backyard to test it - and I love it.
Intro music ran me off. I'd loose it dude.
