Welcome to Slammin Salmon Fishing, your go-to source for salmon fishing adventures! Join me as I share my passion for chasing Chinook and Coho salmon around Washington State.
From gear tips and techniques to on-the-water action, whether you're a seasoned angler or just starting out, my channel aims to inspire, educate, and entertain.
I am not interested in showing off my catch. There are plenty of other channels that do that. My goal is to show you, my viewers, how to catch them with consistency and the gear I use to do it. I have a proven method for drifting corky's or beads, and I have helped many people along the way with just a few friendly words of advice that gave them a better understanding of what's happening under the water as their line drifts down the river. I'll also be using bobber and eggs on some rivers, lures and jigs on others.

ITS NEAR THE RV PARK
did you use a tampon as bait? red is good color.
when do you add a second float (corky)
I judge by the feel of my drift. Lowest water I'll run 1 corky and maybe some yarn or leave the tail on the hook when I tie it. In water a little higher, it'll be 2 corkys. Above that is 1 corky, then a large bead (8mm), medium bead (6mm), and finally in the deepest water use a small bead (4mm). Please keep in mind that this is all at the spot I'm fishing and is based on the current at that spot. The water is only 4ft or so at its highest. Just under 3ft at its lowest.
I was really hoping for an October run but nothing so far
I love this all the haters can go kick rocks!!!!!and that one chic callin her a pick me girl well here ya go jealous bitch!!! Keep it up you guys!!! Your the man scott!
"look at that, right in the mouth" Bro that fish was flossed, Try not using a 8ft leader and see how many fish you catch, try using eggs under a bobber or throw spinners like a real fisherman. The fact you have to say its in the mouth is so obvious you foul hook fish frequently.
@Fishing_503 I don't foul hook fish at all. Mine are almost always left corner of the mouth, as you'll see in my videos. Yes, I floss, and I'm ridiculously good at it. The day of this video, she had a corky covered in Fire Gel. She doesn't know how to floss yet. That's why she's struggled until now, and that's also why the fish ate it. Oh, and don't worry, I use bobber and eggs also. I'll be posting videos from other rivers as well. We're just getting started. The remarks I make in my videos are directed towards a few people who have made certain remarks regarding flossing.
@@SlamminSalmonFishing right on dude, I thought you were trying to say you didnt floss. Yes you are good at it. I see on those rivers you fish, the clarity is bad. Probably extremely hard to actually get them to bite...
@Fishing_503 indeed it is. The visibility in the Puyallup is at best a few inches. Most of the time, you can't see anything.
Is 1/2 oz cannon ball pretty much the max weight you use in western WA rivers? Wanna get the right rod with max lure weight of 1/2 or 3/4 oz to try drifting corkys and yarn.
In my experience, yarn sinks too slow in faster moving water unless you are using a short leader. By the time yarn gets to the right depth, you're already well into your drift and likely went past 90% of the fish you could've been in front of. I keep my leaders long and I'll only use yarn in slow water or extremely shallow water. I stay with 1/2 oz in the Puyallup because of its ability to stay out of the rocks. The 3/8 oz cannon ball falls between the rocks easier and doesn't come out. I lost quite a few trying to get it right. And 3/4 oz? No way. It would be way too slow where I fish. Your leader would be stretched out straight down river and pretty much pinned to the bottom from the current. That is not what you want. You need your whole setup to drift with the current, just above bottom. Your weight should glide along the rocks, moving at, or very near, the same speed as the water. You do not want it to drag at all. If your tip drops hard, you're too heavy. The only thing that should do that is a fish. And my rod is perfect for me.
@SlamminSalmonFishing is there a noticeable difference in number of hook ups with a long leader? I typically run 2-3 ft flouro for castability and reducing tangles
@stuartlemusic I don't get the same drift with the shorter leader. That extra length lightens my drift and helps keep my weight out of the rocks. Its a huge factor in my setup. Say the water goes up half an inch. More water in the river will pick my weight up. I might take off 6 inches of leader to reduce drag and get back to the bottom. And yes, in my opinion, I definitely hook up a lot more.
@stuartlemusic I also don't always use a long leader. I was running 4ft a few days ago at the Tilton. It all depends on the current. You can manipulate your drift in a lot of different ways.
@@SlamminSalmonFishing Ah I see. So the longer leader allows for more surface area for the current to move the hook and bead in the natural pathways of the river regardless of whether the weight is at the exact path. And it creates more buoyancy or drag to lift your weight through the run. Can't you just adjust weight instead of adjust what length ladder you use to achieve the same effect?

Correct way to floss!!
Yes sir. Never set before the fish is there. Otherwise, it would be an attempt to snag. This is where a lot of people fail to see the difference between the two and why they get tickets.

where is this place on the puyallup im looking for spots on it that dont require waders
@BilalAbdulalim-z2l above 5th St. You'll need waders just about everywhere from here on. The water is gonna go up now. That whole area was under water today.
hey is there any way I could fish with you!? I have been trying the past two weeks at duwamish river with no luck!
@kando1452 yeah, for sure. No luck? Have you been using eggs, Foxes, and twitch jigs, etc? How have you been fishing? The Duwamish/Green isn't a river I'd use this technique in at all. It's too deep and slow in most places, but most of all, the water is clear. You have a lot of options in that river. I've been wanting to get up there and hit it with some of these eggs. The Puyallup is pretty fast water, and it's super muddy, so most of those things don't really work too well. It's all about getting it right in front of the fish in this river. They can't see at all. They run right into our legs. But they can still smell, so smelly jelly helps.
This video was very helpful thank you keep up the good work👍 where is this spot btw?
5ft leader? I’m new to drifting. Would like to try out the carbon drifting corkies.
I run anywhere from 8.5ft to 10ft of leader. Usually right about 9ft. But that's for the Puyallup. The Carbon is a little different. Maybe 6ft and run a 10mm bead. You'll need to get a feel for the water wherever you go. There are a lot of spots on the carbon and most of them are different speed and depths. You'll need to adapt to wherever you are. Just remember, the fish are right above the bottom and that's where you want to be. Find a way to get there without getting caught in the rocks. If you get caught up, make a longer leader. Add more mass to you hook (bead, corky, yarn etc). They all do different things. Beads are for deeper or faster water, they sink faster. Corky's more shallow water where you don't need to go down too fast. Yarn with a bead or corky for the shallowest waters. It sinks slow enough and has enough drag in the water that you won't catch bottom thru your shallow drift, but instead travel along right where you want to be.
One thing I don't do is change my weight. Find a weight that works for the current and stick with it. Adjust your leader and bait/lure to compensate for drift conditions.
@@SlamminSalmonFishing thank you for breaking it down! Hope to land a few with that technique!
Don't use 6,8 or 10 ft leaders in the Carbon. 3-4' will work all day long. I'm getting tired of rookies coming in and filling the holes with multiple 10 ft leaders making them unfishable. Keep that garbage on the lower Puyallup.
@@brianjohnston4207 nobody said they were going to use that long leaders their 😂 I see ppl on RUclips using long leaders maybe go talk to them
Looks like one of the beads i gave you. Fish on!
@robertjewell4741 yeah buddy. Thank you. I've got at lot of fish on those beads.
I was wondering if i would ever see any of the videos you take in that spot. Been fishing that hole for 10 or 11 years now. I do not believe you have ever shown me how to fish..lol. Good to see some familiar faces.
I have quite a few videos still to post and many more yet to take. I'm gonna be offering some tips regarding water levels and what to run in different conditions. I'm always offering tips to the whole group down there. Most just already know everything and don't wanna hear it. I try. Thats why everyone switched from beads to corky's last week. When is the last time, if ever, that you have seen JR or Daniel use a corky until last week? I'll see you there in the morning.

2:35 Dude had me rolling
Yeah, that was pretty funny. That's Hunter. I've been fishing with him a lot lately. Cool dude. He usually does pretty good, but he was having a rough day. Its funnier when you know the whole back story. I show up and 3rd cast it a lot. Sometimes 5th cast, but I usually get my first fish pretty quick, and he'd been there the last few days that I'd done that. This video starts right after I caught my fourth fish of the day, and I believe Hunter had been there the whole time. Thats when Joe started talking to me.
Don’t do it Scott
Lol do what? Teach them how to get the advantage using the side drift?
Where this spot at plz!!
It's not the spot. I promise you it's a shitty spot. I could do at least an hour-long snag compilation every week. It's what keeps the people away. The only reason I fish there is because my friends are there. I lose at least $25 in gear a week. I could go to the Soccer Fields and do just as well, probably even better, and not lose hardly anything. I was down by Sportco where there was nobody. Still killin it. The fish are there. Go get them. Thinking it's the spot limits your ability to catch them. Find the right drift and the fish will be there.
can you show what's the setup?
I'm gonna do a video just on my full setup. It'll be up today or tomorrow.
You mentioned that if you just let it drift without pulling the rod/reeling in, the speed is too slow. How do you determine the right speed of drift? Why did you think in that situation the drift should be faster?
How I determine the speed is by making my first cast a feeling my weight. If it strikes the bottom too hard, I know my speed is too slow and my drift is too heavy. At this point, I have several options. I can add a corky or bead, I can put on a longer leader, I can reduce the size of my weight, or I can cast again and pull on my line to speed it up. All of those options will lighten my drift. If the tip of your pole is jerking down every time you hit a rock and you have to pull on it every 2 seconds to get out of a rock, you're too heavy. It should be steady like a slow vibration.
To add to my previous comment, the only time you should have to pull on your pole should be to get off of a known snag, or to set a fish that you feel on the line. If you're doing otherwise, your drift is too slow, or you are intentionally snagging. Hooking a fish after you jerk up is 100% snagging, and if you're doing it right, you should never have to do that. In all of my videos, you can see the drift vs the fish, before I set. I never just randomly pull on my line. You might have to slow it down in some videos. My reaction times are pretty fast.
@@SlamminSalmonFishing this is incredibly helpful!! Thank you so much for explaining.
@@alexeykor6528 you bet. Thanks for the feedback. It helps me know what I need to add to future videos like this.
Can you do a video of your setup? I’m still learning the waters here and never fished with corkys
Is that a hard or soft trout bead you're using?
Hard 8mm.
@@SlamminSalmonFishing thanks! Quick question, wouldn't that hard bead be detrimental to landing a big fish? I've heard hard beads that are near the hook could be used to leveragea fish off the hook.
@@joshuarogers4428 I do believe you might be right. I typically only lose fish when I'm using a bead on the loop. The corky does not have the same problem. However, there are certain times when the hard bead is the only thing that gets you where you need to be.

Does anyone get them on that river doing anything besides flossing?
@keeganm9701 once the water clears up, you can drift a bobber and eggs. Right now, it's too muddy.
It's snagging only
Since I moved to Washington I’m the only person I’ve seen hook a fish legally. Or is this shit legal here. Still to see fish and wildlife and it’s nuts man. I’m miss Oregon lol
@@ccarter0069 Its legal. The corky is in the mouth before I set. That is not snagging, and it is 100% legal. I have a great video coming out tomorrow that explains the technique I'm using in most of my videos... and I get into a fish as I'm explaining it. Stay tuned.
@@danm1319 I'm curious to know what you think about it isn't legal. The corky is in or on the mouth before I set the hook. I don't randomly rip on my pole like 90% of the people I see on the river (they are snagging). The only debatable issue is whether the fish took it willingly or got flossed. Since I have them hooked in the mouth, and not somewhere around the head, the assumption is they took the bait willingly and it's considered a legal catch. And in Washington, anything forward of the gill plate is considered legal. Mouth or not. I've had 2 fish all season that weren't directly in the mouth, but both were still legal.
Im looking to get the g loomis e6x but I am wonder what length and power I should get it in?

Do you use weight setup on the that or just the cork and hook?
@@hiro_26-r2r I tie the leader to a swivel and put a 1/2 Oz cannon ball on the swivel snap
@@SlamminSalmonFishing oh thanks and is it like Carolina setup?
@hiroshiruluked1566 it is not. I don't use any kind of slider. My weight is fixed at the swivel using the snap. If you look at a snap swivel, the snap will be on one end of the swivel. I tie my main line to that end of the swivel and leave the snap dangling. I tie my leader to the opposite end of the swivel. I attach a 1/2 Oz cannon ball to the snap, so it hangs below the swivel. If your weight gets snagged up in rocks, the snap will open, and your weight will break away, rather than losing everything.
good morning I am a subscriber and fan of your channel will you tell me limit of a day and how many can be in possession total. I am from california and like to do a fishing trip for 3 days thanks
For the Puyallup River, the daily limit for salmon is 6, only 2 of which can be adults (page 37 wdfw regs). Coho Adults are over 20", Chinook Adults are over 24" (page 18 wdfw regs). You are allowed 2 daily limits of fish in your possession. So, 12 salmon at most, but 8 of those would need to be juvenile. Other rivers may have different limits.

Looks like you’re on my boy Sean’s property
Definitely not, but if his property looks like that, lets go fishing.
They are mad they aren’t catching lol
Lol they were all sidelined by the high water, struggling to find a good drift. I dropped on that 3mm bead and killed it. Had 2 fish within 20 minutes.
I was down there a few weeks ago. Boy, watching you in action in person was demoralizing and inspiring at the same time. 😂 Keep dissecting that river!
Yessir. Thank you for the compliment. If you're down there again and you see me, feel free to come join me and let's get into some fish. I'm down there almost every day.
Can you please post some slow motion videos of what the tip of the pole looks like right before you set ?
Yes, I definitely will in all of my future videos.
how this happen to be by the 161 bridge
I just fish the river, I don't know how it got there 😉
