Peter Keegan is a professional artist living and working in Buckinghamshire, UK, specialising in portraiture. Trained at Cardiff School of Art and working in oils, Peter follows traditional techniques but uses them in a way to depict the people he meets in a modern and original style. Really useful and practical - thanks
There is absolutely nothing bad about using a blue oil paint.
Fascinating thankyou
What a fabulous lesson, thank you Peter
Portrait Artist of the Year? Have to done this?
Exxxxxcelent
Your work is extremly underrated - a really profound and thoughtful demonstration of painting the portrait. Nicely done Sir.
Perfect Painting!
Your tutorials are very helpful, thank you! I'm now getting serious about doing quality drawing and painting.
Wonderful workshop. Would it possible to download the photo to work from?
I'm very new to painting. Should I try the Zorn Pallete or is it more advanced?
What is the device that displays your photo and how is it attached to your drawing board?
Fabulous! On the beginning drawing is that done in charcoal and secured with a fixative?
Wonderful descriptive video, full of really helpful instruction. Could the nose be at a better angle? Maybe it would help the 3D of the portrait.
No blue?
groovy cool, I block in my portraits the same way on a toned canvas.
I worked with the Zorn ( adjusted) pallet for a year. It proved one thing to me. Artists don’t need the six shades of every color on their pallet. When I see an artist do this it tells me they were never trained in color mixing. Or are too lazy to mix colors. One can work with a” limited “ pallet and achieve many ( harmonious) shades and values. AND saves a fortune purchasing every color manufacturers want you to buy. The old adage - you can make most every color and shade from the basic primaries plus black and white is true. Bottom line, for me, is it is not the color hue but the value of the color. (Note: lead white is dangerous and shortened the lives of many an artist throughout history.) For fifty years of painting I have used what this called a “ bias” pallet which consists of : cool and warm of the primaries. ( titanium) White and Raw Umber. My red is Cad. Red light, Cad Yellow light, Ocher, Ultra Marine Blue, Viridian, ( sap green for outdoor landscapes) That is it. I have no trouble painting still life’s, portraits or landscapes. Thank you for your so generously share your knowledge, clear explanation and this serie step for step tutorials on oil portraits with Zorn Palette.
Love your work, but i think you are using to much gray color. The orginal pic has almost no gray at all.
Ótimo vídeo 😊
Hi Peter!!!
Thank you for this. I have learned a lot. Thank you, Paris
What brand are the white and the black charcoal you used, if I may ask please?
Very, very good! Thanks for your sharing (and sorry my English) your explanation is excellent: short and precise!
Wow, that's beautiful.
Thanks for a nice Time. 🙏🏼🙏🏼👌👌🧡🧡
WoW, WoW, Excellent and perfect Portrait Drawing, More Thanks. 🙏🏼🙏🏼👏👏👌👌😍😍♥♥
STUNNING
Simply Superb!
Thanks for the video. A bit strange though that you take your time for plotting out the height of the features of the face but then going straight to angles of the outsides of the face. Getting this somewhat accurate, especially with regards to the centre line is quite difficult for many (me included). It seems like your doing 2 thngs at once: determining the width of the face AND doing angles.
Glad to see you back on RUclips 👍
I must confess: I do have trouble taking the 'paint what you see not what you think' when the head in the painting is turned in a different angle than the reference. That said, I enjoy painting what I think …
Fantastic
A small correction, Peter; he did not use titanium white, as it was only developed in the 1910s and started being used only in the 1920s. He probably used lead white, for which zinc is a good replacement nowadays. Very neat video nonetheless!
I have another question. What kind of heavy oil do you use for blocking? The oils I have are flaxseed oil and gamsol.
Show, parabéns e muito obrigado pelos ensinamentos 😊
Mars Black has more blue in it. Mixed with White you get a beautiful Blue. You dont get it with other blacks
Absolutely beautiful. You have inspired me to paint loose.
you are No zorn
Very interesting.
Fantastic demo lot of information for me to practice with thank you .
Excellent
❤
Thanks a lot for the video and detailed explanation. From Russia with ❤
This is a wonderful demonstration. Thank you for the time and trouble you have gone to in order this information more understandable.
although I don't paint with oil, this was very informative. Thank you for making it so detailed, I really appreciate it. I will try something similar with gouache.
you're a great communicator and teacher. this is what you should focus on. more tutorial series
Remarkable. You are a great teacher.
great artist, but I would have added a different sweater to my composition, something that adds something to stand out from a dull picture.
