Advice for those receiving SSI and invited to Amazon Vine (Don't get the food!)
This is insane! Of course we American people are being scammed, how else would this country be able to support wars in other countries. We are taxed 10 times on the same dollar
2024: im new to vine, but the basics are, you get invited. My invite said it was because my past reviews are marked helpful by shoppers. You can select up to 3 items per day. They ship, but not in the usual 2 or 3 days, it can be 5, 7 or as long as 20 days for something to arrive. To remain in the vine program, you must have 60% of items reviewed at any given time. To get access to the Gold status (and higher value items) you must request at least 100 items, and review 90% of items requested. All within the "review period". 30 days from time of request, a review period is Typically 3 months. Its not 40 hours a week, but does take some effort and time management. You can lose Vine status if you are not keeping up with reviews with in the 60% or 30 days limit. In some ways thats bogus, if it takes 10 days to get things, but you figure it out. She must be counting her browsing time, if it's taking 40 hours a week. Open the box , plug in whatever it is... it works Snap a photo... post the review. Generally, you can unboxing, assembly and posting in 15 minutes. The usage of an item is in your normal day, so i dont specifically count thay time. Sure, she's right , a few items to fix up your house will take longer for assembly. Welcome to home ownership.
IRS Auditors have recieved training on how to filter out emotion from the process cause many times they have people that just lost their family and job and they will soon be homeless with kids, Yet they have to get money from You. Dont wish for an audit, they will take your life apart. Your best bet is convincing them that the goods you receive are not worth the "New" value as per the contract and you cant resell the product for 6 months. So none of it is worth half the value. I believe if your not allowed to sell it, then you shouldnt be taxed
How did things turn out so far? Have you shifted your perspective on this at all since filing?
At least you have a toddler.
Here's another twist... the Vine agreement says that businesses can not participate in Vine. So does that mean you can't actually declare and deduct this as a "business" on your taxes??? That you cannot actually do this as a Schedule C??! Does that mean this is personal income only, or hobby income??!! Does this whole argument fall apart?? I think the actual solution is to have the IRS investigate this and declare that the strategy of Amazon passing on the tax burden to the Vine Member is actually a scam, and should not be allowed, since they are not the ones who actually own the products or give out the products. The products belong to the sellers, who are giving out the products, and Amazon is the warehousing and shipping middle man, and has no business sending out a tax form in their own name.
Our standard deduction, for 2023 was $29,200 for us as joint filed. That is way over the amount we even receive yearly. I received $13, 224 worth or products during that year. Now that brought our income down to 0. How can I be responsible for taxes with no income, according to the IRS 1040 form. Our taxes were done by a professional, not by me. You can understand my quandary.
As a former Vine Voice participant I was looking for some insight here. The rambling anecdotal asides, the superfluous commentary, the lack of focus and organized thought really negates any useful info contained within. Is there any? I had to quit watching after 18 minutes because the whole exercise is worthless. And who are you speaking to? Why not speak to the camera?
How the flying F did you get more in vine products than you make in a year? You either make literally nothing, or vine'd the entire store!
Everyone wants to ignore the fact that you signed a W9 form with Amazon to say that you were going to be a sole proprietor relationship with them. They are giving you free stuff in exchange for reviews. That is a relationship. It’s just that you guys don’t want to pay your taxes. What everyone needs to know is just because you can get $55,000 worth of stuff on the gold level doesn’t mean you should take it. You’ve gotta be smarter than a fifth grader. You will pay your tax rate on that and it’s going to be a lot. For 2024 it’ll be 25% I believe. But also when you’re a sole proprietor, that means you have a business and so you can deduct your office and the water, electric, gas, and trash collection portion of your house that you use in this office. Of course you won’t do anything else in that office except for Amazon…..
If you want someone to "steal" something out of the front yard, then put a sign on it that says $50. People will act on the perceived value. Works all the time for tires etc. Also, unrelated to Vine, I've sold a few office chairs pulled from hotel sale for $40 each pretty quick on FB marketplace. Mine didn't smell dank though lol.
You're an enneagram type 3, right? You really remind me of my daughter who is type 3.
7:11 "The item is a necessary business expense", no because you didn't buy it. It was given to you which means it's revenue. "you're not receiving any profit from it" right. Of course, this isn't special. If you give your mom a car worth $12000, he has to pay taxes on that. If you give your friend 1500 toys worth $5 each, he will have to pay taxes on that. 10:42 "Supposedly my income is increasing, but I don't have any more money than I did before to be able to pay for healthcare or to pay for food or to be able to pay taxes" Income taxes is supposed to be part of your income set aside for the government. Maybe you should send them your taxes in Amazon products because that's what the income is?
i would add the following: - many of the products i review are bad products. like you said, unsafe, false description, etc. so i'm being paid to identify and keep bad products from customers, saving amazon tons of money in returns and customer service issues, but i'm being paid in things that i cannot return that i'm leaving bad reviews for? mkkkkkay or this one - i'm being paid in products that may or may not have the value that they're being sold for. it is my job to use them in a real world environment. so where do i deduct my time? the space and environment i provide for use of said products? all the computer and camera equipment i use to keep track of my analysis and reviews of these products? again, many of these are bad products, with safety issues, yet my compensation is products that i'm given that i cannot sell or gift to anyone? i pay a mortgage for the place these items are stored in, is amazon going to reimburse me for storage costs? mmmmkay i definitely need to speak to a cpa instead of turbotaxing it this year, but i'm definitely going the business route. this is definitely a gray area, but until more clarification is provided, i'm not seeing how anyone can argue that these products are income just out of curiosity., did you set up an LLC with a tax id number or are you just filing it under your social?
Spent my whole career in the accounting space and it looks like Amazon has found another way to shift the tax liability onto someone else... the Vine Participants. There is no way to expense these items as they are gifts akin to winning sweepstakes/lottery. If the IRS is not sure how to deal with this kind of business yet, it means the little guy will get burned until it is figured out. The items are not free at all... instead a deduction/loss for the sellers you are reviewing. More like a scheme under the guise of getting reviews in return.
Sorry, i know its so offtopic but you have such a [by the bless of god] beautiful and kind face, showing so many emotions and expressions, that it was hard for me to focus on what you said. have to watch (listen!) it again. 😊
One thing to keep in mind which does support Heidi's strategy is that possession and use of the product is necessary to complete the reviewer service. It's not that people get a product in exchange for the review, it's that receipt, possession and use of the product is necessary to provide the review. The product is integral to providing the reviewer service and as such it's similar to a "working condition benefit" which is not considered income by the IRS. Also, keep in mind that Intuit suggested that a product reviewer who works for a product review company, pays for the product up front, then gets reimbursed and an additional fee for the review can deduct the original purchase price as a business expense which leaves only the additional fee received as income. This amounts to the same result as getting the product for free.
I would even be willing to pay the taxes on the items I receive because I technically don't HAVE to order anything, but the thing I hate most about vine is that it counts as income and affects everything like health insurance, medicaid, food stamps, etc. and can even move you up to the next tax bracket, depending how close you were to the line and how much ETV you rack up.
How silly all categories in Additional for Germany have gone now for good, leaving only view all as an option. I assume for the UK and maybe others as well, whilst in the mean time the US have not only all categories in additional showing, but a search function lol
I wonder if the 1099 OID would be useful in this situation? It's been many years since I last seen one, and will research the form's use after my shift, but if you used it or even considered it, please LMK, thanks. www.irs.gov/forms-pubs/about-form-1099-oid
I have PTSD and Bipolar 1. So I can relate to you.
In my opinion, the tax is simple. Amazon sends the items to you but you have to hold onto them for half a year, and use them. At the end of that time you can sell them. The depreciation rate for a used item can be assumed to be six months. In other words, during the 6 months the things you received became worthless. Depreciation of these used items reduced their value to zero. If you throw them away after 6 months, you owe no tax. If you sell them after 6 months on Ebay, you owe taxes on that income. But not the original estimated tax value. Because you cannot sell it during the six months, during that time its market value is also zero. So things that are being "aged" are also worthless. Unless you sell old used Vine items on Ebay or a yard sale, you OWE NO TAX.
UnpredictableViolet, that brings up a good point. What you wrote got me to thinking, since a Vine participant has to hold onto products for six months before giving them away or selling them, how are we taxed on those products that were ordered during that six month wait. Say you ordered products, in November, before your evaluation, now you have to hold onto those products until next April. It's something to check into. What is Amazon's fiscal year? That is something else to consider.
Mochi is great for snapping back to reality because it's cold and has a strong flavor and texturally really weird and kind of difficult to eat so you have to concentrate. Most underrated grounding tool.
Just thought I'd throw this thought out here. I'm new to Vine, filing this coming tax season for the first time in regards to Vine, so take this thought with a grain of salt. But it seems to me that we should probably be filing this as Bartering Income. Heidi, it's really brave of you do try this out for everyone. You seem like a lovely person. I hope all is well. We're all guessing here.
I'm brand new to Vine, and I am super confused on the taxes. I wish there was a clear answer. Thank you so much for posting this. Please keep us posted. You are amazing for trying to figure this out for everyone. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
Hoping to hear back from you again in video format. A lot has changed over the year!
Thank you so much for sharing because I want to quit the program bc I didn’t want to pay taxes on anything over $6k 🎉
Might be kind of a weird comment given the context of this video but you are very attractive.
Heidi - I recently landed on your videos & love them! I'm curious how you're doing now & if you plan on releasing any new videos? :)
I often wake up soaking wet from what I'm doing in sleep moving etc often takes me an hour to settle
Well done I have had ptsd for over 20 years mostly Night terrors due to military service peace
What is the name of the FB group that tells how to get food on the Vine program? I'd like to join that group, because all I'm getting is cake toppers.
I'm new to Vine, less than 2 months. You do a nice job of explaining your position in this video. I appreciate your openness and candid way of explaining Vine taxes. The first point you raised is you are "contracted" by Amazon. But, do we have a contract with Amazon? We are required to meet the goals to remain a Vine member and to follow their rules. That's pretty much it. I'm skeptical meeting goals and following rules constitutes an actual contract, or a contractor relationship.
Thank you for sharing Heidi. Do you get the welling up sense of terror in your stomach?
How often do you have panic attacks?
I just had my first panic attack today, if was cannabis induced. My first time smoking weed and never again!! I literally thought I was going to die. I am in Canada on vacation and got two joints from a total stranger for free yesterday, I smoked one of them today and after about 30 minutes it felt like all the food and drink I had eaten were slowly rising back up my food pipe and that I was about to vomit. Meanwhile I was sweating like a mofo lying down in a puddle of sweat, my head was spinning, I couldn't breathe, and every time I drank a sip of water i felt like it was getting lodged in my pipe so that wasnt helping either. I started thinking the absolute worst - like I got this weed off a stranger for free, what if the weed was poisoned and I was about to vomit and suffocate to death! I was lying on the couch actually waiting for death to come. Then I fell asleep, woke up a couple hours later and I was fine, but omg it was scary.
Yeah definitely sounds like a panic attack. I think your first mistake was getting two joints from a complete stranger. Don’t trust things that you receive from people, as it could’ve been laced with something, or anything. I would recommend getting your weed from a trusted source, and rolling it into a joint on your own. Usually, it’s normal for your heart to beat faster while smoking weed. In some cases, you can experience a racing heart known as cannabis-induced tachycardia. It’s not a cause for concern. It may feel scary and uncomfortable, but it is not dangerous or life threatening. It also depends on what’s in your weed, that’s causing the panic attacks and the racing heart. THC is short for “Tetrahydrocannabinol”, and it is the main active ingredient in cannabis. As the cannabinoids found in cannabis - like THC and CBD - bind to cannabinoid receptors throughout the central nervous system, THC causes the blood vessels to expand and dilate, increasing blood flow and speeding up the heart, sometimes leading to a cannabis induced panic attack or tachycardia. So just remember, you’re not gonna die and you’re not in any danger. There have been no reported deaths from a cannabis overdose. You’re just high and you just consumed too much THC.
What was the email specifically? Just from amazon or did it say Vine in it? Thank you for all the details!!
That's not a panic attack. Weirdo faker
This is really good info- a lot of people don't know about the no-selling and how strict that is, and I can't say how but I do know multiple people who lost out being in the Vine program for selling items on other market places, and some were marked or variations that can be pointed out. Vine looks like a free-for-all because people don't take the "no selling" part seriously and are clueless about the tax liabilities they rack up, and all that before they even realize how time consuming leaving the reviews is. This is a really good and balanced explanation, Part 1 & Part 2 combined. This channel is great for anyone new to Vine, how it's fun, but also how you didn't really hit the Jackpot like it sounds, either. Subscribed in case you do any more Vine videos. 👍
I have been audited twice (not for Amazon - I was working out of state for damage assessments). There is no way to actually communicate with the IRS Auditor despite being on hold for hours only to be disconnected, a dozen times. They stonewall you and deny everything and you do NOT want to ever have to deal with IRS audits. Their vocabulary does not include the word "fair"
Not sure if you still have tax questions but if you can find yourself a seasoned IRS enrolled agent (vs. CPA). An IRS enrolled agent specializes in tax preparation only, and IRS enrolled agents are qualified to represent you in tax court if there is something the IRS pursues against the taxpayer and a seasoned IRS enrolled agents knows the intricacies of tax law better than many CPAs because CPAs have more broad practice outside of taxes. I hope you have figured most of this out but I would recommend you find a very seasoned IRS enrolled agent. I do know that you are required to report the value of things that many people are unaware of, such as those Mary Kay/Tupperware, etc. "parties" in which if you are the hostess - as those free products are considered income - and this is in the tax code so FYI ;-) -- also if you receive gifts or prize winnings you are required to report this; if your employer gifts you things like gift cards, game tickets, etc .(unless these "gifts" were awarded are for length of service and /or merit then these merit/length of service low value gifts would be exempt - so per IRS a very specialized exempt type of "gift" in that regard, and not to include high - value gifts). Good luck and great info you presented here ! And I hope you are not stressed out anymore about this - it is too bad you got so many conflicting opinions, even from the IRS office. Ridiculous isn't it? I am sure you learned a lot from this experience. I have also learned this life lesson, that so much depends on who we talk to and what do they really know?
I tried it but dropped out before I reached an amount I’d have to answer for. The whole thing is just wild & sketchy imho
You are a solider <3
I think it is starting to be understood that Amazon does this. This is important for everybody. Plus, If we could all understand that this Country is not going to stop Amazon, because of the jobs and the entire ecosystem they bring. Your Review has been very helpful. Thank You.
Yup, this is almost exactly what I look like, right down to banging into stuff, feeling nauseous. Just slightly different movements, and I like to pat my hands together to against my thighs or the ground. I don't really call it a panic attack, though. I've had one episode of what I think of as a panic attack and it felt like I was going to die. When I'm doing the stuff that you do it just feels like a huge adrenaline surge. There's not much emotion or negative self talk for me. It's just really annoying. I'm also intensely tired after if it was bad. I personally don't feel good after. Sometimes my muscles are quite weak.
I found this...... The IRS states $600. If you receive a 1099 from Amazon Vine then you will file. I went to the IRS website for this info. Read publication 535 "Not For Profit Activities" "If you're not an employee of the payer, and you're not in a self-employed trade or business, you should report the income on line 8i of Schedule 1 (Form 1040), Additional Income and Adjustments to Income PDF and any allowable expenses on Schedule A (Form 1040), Itemized Deductions. Refer to Not for Profit Activities in Chapter 1 of Publication 535, Business Expenses for allowable nonbusiness expenses" There is no reason to file a schedule C and SE to pay social security taxes unless you are dong this to make a profit.
Discord link doesn't work :(
Great video!
interesting
I let my panic attack just come and not try to stop it, because in my case the anxiety goes away way faster if i don´t try to control it in any way.
